As I spent more time with Edward, I realised that he would be the hardest thing I have to let go of when I returned back to Forks, 2013. I wondered when I would finally meet him in present time and how.
As promised, Rosalie visited us at our new home. She marvelled over how gorgeous the house was and smiled as she sat down on one of the chairs at the porch. I sat down together with her, putting the pot of hot tea and teacups on the table. I poured for her some tea and did the same for my cup.
"So how are you? I've missed you for the past few days." She said.
"I'm doing really great. Seriously, you need to get yourself a guy," I shook my head, laughing. "I've missed you too, darling."
She blushed. "Speaking of getting myself a man who will do forever with me, I think I've found him."
I raised my eyebrows. Was I going to meet Rosalie's other half in the present too? "Oh? When?"
She gave me a flustered smile. "Uh... during the party two weeks ago."
I rolled my eyes. "I don't think you need prompter questions. Go ahead and give me that sparkly-eyed look while you talk about him and how beautiful your babies will be."
He widened her eyes, slapping my arm. "Isabella!" she gasped.
I sighed. "You've done this to me for more than once, Rose. Just do it."
She frowned. "Really? When did I?"
I froze, then recovered. "Uhm... I guess you didn't, then."
She gave me a pointed look, but let it slide.
"So how old is he?" I prompted even when I didn't need to. "How does he look like? What's his name? Has he kissed you yet? Gave you a ring? Have you set a date yet? If you have, have you both discussed baby names?"
Rosalie looked mortified. "Isabella, are you always this straightforward?"
I shrugged. "You've known me for years; you should know this."
Her shoulders slumped, quirking her lips to the side. "Well, you have been like this."
"Should I repeat my questions?" I smirked.
She quickly shook her head. "Oh god no. His name is Emmett McCarty. He has the cutest dimples and blue eyes with the softest brown hair you will ever feel—"
"What, my hair not soft enough for you? I'm really hurt." I placed a hand over my chest and pretended to be hurt by her comment.
She huffed, rolling her eyes. "Isabella, please don't start on that."
I feigned innocence. "What do you mean?"
She scoffed, letting it slide. "He is so muscular and strong and he has a really cheeky smile. He's very flirtatious, but still chivalrous. He's a year older than me. Oh, I really think I'm in love with him," she gave me a sigh as she placed her hand on her heart.
"Well," I exclaimed sarcastically, "seems like someone managed to thaw that ice heart of yours!"
"Excuse me! I have not always been so heartless, okay?" She defended herself.
I took a sip of my tea. "Uhuh. Sure."
"Well now, how about you? How is Edward, and where is he?" she asked.
"He's doing fine. He went out to help his father out in the hospital. Why do you ask?"
She shook her head. "Just looking out. Have you heard about rise of deaths from the disease here in Chicago?" she sighed, continuing to shake her head. "It is getting deadly! I just hope no one we know has been struck by it."
I froze. "What disease?" I asked.
She raised her eyebrow. "The Spanish Influenza; how can you not know?"
I sucked in a deep breath. "Sp–Spanish Influenza?" I stuttered.
She huffed, rolling her eyes. "You cannot actually be totally clueless."
She was right. I learnt about this era a few years back; the Spanish Influenza was one of the most important events that happened other than World War I. It started in January 1918 and ended in 1920. It was also named the deadliest pandemic in the history of mankind. I couldn't remember the exact number of victims, but it was probably close to 100 million. I couldn't remember. I cursed, wishing that I was paying more attention in history class.
Rosalie frowned. "What was that, Isabella?"
I waved her off. "It's nothing. Shouldn't the government actually raise an alarm about this?"
"They should, but they choose not to. They think it is nothing serious and that we should continue going about our daily activities, but I think scaring the public and keeping them indoors from the flu is better than having delirious people walking around. Sometimes the government does not know better," she sighed, shaking her head. Glancing at her pocket watch, her lips turned into an 'O' and sheepishly smiled at me. "Oh Isabella, I have something on in fifteen minutes and—"
I stood up and she did the same. "That's alright. Go. If you need anything, call the landline."
She hugged me and I hugged her back before she walked down the porch and on the gravel path towards the iron gates. I picked up our half full teacups and put them in the sink of the kitchen, leaving them for the kitchen crew to clean up. Then, from the staircase I could hear horses padding across the pavement. I quickly ran out of the house and found Alice peeking out of the window of her carriage. She smiled and waved excitedly when she saw me.
The driver hopped off his seat to open the door for Alice and she came out, holding a baby in her arms. She bounced him on her arms lightly as she cooed, clearly adoring him. She looked up at me again and smiled. "Good afternoon, Isabella!" She greeted.
"Good afternoon, Alice," I replied. "Jasper isn't with you?"
She shook her head. "He decided to have some time with his newfound friends."
"Is that Peter?" I asked, curious.
She raised both her eyebrows. "Edward must have told you then."
I nodded and she continued walking towards me. She stood right in front of me, giving me an awkward one-arm hug. She let me go and we both looked down at the little angel between us.
"He's beautiful." I whispered, stroking his cheek with one finger. He grabbed it and stared up at me with wide brown eyes.
Alice nodded. "Yes he is," she agreed. "He's got his daddy's eyes."
Peter had hazel brown eyes and a sprinkle of soft brown baby hair sprouting out of his scalp. He was as cute as a button as he reached out for me curiously.
Alice looked at me. "Do you want to hold him?" I hesitated, but she shook her head, reassuring me. "You will not hurt him."
I sighed and Alice handed him over to me. He was pretty sturdy for a baby who was of three months. I rocked him in my arms and he smiled. "Ah." He spoke and my eyes widened. He studied my features as I stared at him.
"He started making sounds last week. It is amazing just how fast he is progressing." Alice sighed. "I'm here to ask you for a favour, Isabella."
"Anything," I said almost instantly.
"Take care of him today for me please. Jasper & I have an event to attend. We will be back by midnight and I know that you sleep earlier than that, so I will pick him up tomorrow morning. Do you have anything going on tomorrow?" She asked.
"I'm following Edward to the hospital to volunteer," I replied.
"Oh. Well then, I will be here first thing in the morning— half past eight, does that sound good to you?"
"Yeah. Anything else?" I asked.
She gave me a big paper bag that she was holding. "There is his change of clothes inside, his milk bottle and diapers. Have you taken care of any baby before?"
I nodded. "I used to do it all the time. There would always be neighbours who need my help."
She smiled. "Then I trust that Peter will be put in bed by eight at night?"
"Yes, Alice. You can trust me with anything." I told her.
She hummed. "I still have not figured out your little secret yet."
I shook my head. "Don't even think about it." I playfully narrowed my eyes at her and she laughed.
"Okay then. I will see you soon, Isabella." She said. She then kissed Peter's forehead and he squirmed. "Momma will pick you up tomorrow. Be good to Aunt Isabella. You may never know; she might be carrying your cousin!"
I gasped. "Alice!"
She waved me off. "You are going to provide him a cousin very soon. I found out that I was pregnant a month after Jasper & I got married. Goodbye!" She kissed my cheeks and Peter's for the last time before she got on her carriage and left the estate.
Holding the paper bag with my fingers and Peter in my arms, he sucked on his thumb as he stared up at me.
"Seems like it's just you and me, Peter," I muttered. "Let's see what time your Uncle Edward will be home."
Bella is left with her baby nephew to babysit! Well, what do you think will happen?
