Heart'sgem: *nervous laugh* It's been a while, hasn't it?
Saix: Yes it has. According to the number of cycles the moon has been through, it has been-
Heart'sgem: I don't even want to know. I'm sorry everyone! I will explain at the end of the chapter, I promise! It starts in Sora's P.O.V, then it goes to Roxas'. I do not own anything from Kingdom Hearts, and enjoy!
Kairi and I walked side by side in the darkness that was surrounding us. We had our keyblades out and they shone with a dull light which was supported with the light coming from above us. Our keyblades had not shone a few days ago, but it didn't take us long to realize that they did.
Shadows moved around in the darkness, but whenever I turned to see what it was, darkness coldly welcomed me. We looked ahead of us and ignored the shadows as we continued to walk forwards.
Walking kept our hopes up; our legs stretched towards a better place full of light, yet we never reach it, but we can always hope.
Kairi tensed up next to me and stopped walking, and I cautiously halted next to her as I tightened my grip on my keyblade. A figure was blocking my path, and I gazed at our opponent carefully. He was an average height, and he was wearing a casual white t-shirt with loose shorts that ended right below his knees. His long hair fell to the floor with a ponytail keeping the strands together. His bored blue eyes looked at me and my eyes widened. Sure, he looked a little different, but I knew him. "Who are you?" I demanded.
He smirked and carelessly flicked his hair back. "I'm just someone with a nobody's memories."
My eyes narrowed. "You mean that you are Demyx's somebody." I had only seen Demyx a few times, but I always remembered a person's face.
He grinned. "Well, you caught me, but I wasn't really hiding. I have been trying to get your attention for days, but you always ignored me, so I just chose the direct path of walking in your line of view."
"Wait," Kairi said curiously, "how can you tell how much time has passed?"
He shrugged and pulled out a common watch out of his pocket. "It's not rocket science, time flows at the same pace as the world above us."
"You don't seem like Demyx, and the only thing you have in common is your eyes," I said suspisiously. "Why should we trust you?"
His eyes narrowed and he stuffed the watch in his pocket. "Don't you learn anything from all those adventures you go on? I am Demyx's somebody, but that doesn't mean we are the same exact person. If you put two identical people in completely different situations, of course they are going to turn out differently. Demyx hasn't found peace within himself because he hasn't been allowed to, but I have, and that is what makes us different."
Kairi stepped in between us and looked at Demyx. "But why are you here? I thought that only people who died in a special way came here."
He turned to look at Kairi and scoffed. "I guess that you haven't learned much either. And I thought girls were more intellectual." He ran his hand through his hair that has crept back in front of his shoulders. "And I guess that you have to die before you can find all of the truths that man is constantly searching for. And I'm going to be kind enough to give you a couple."
Kairi looked at him curiously. "But shouldn't we wait before we learn whatever this information is?"
He smiled. "It's not that terrible of a secret, and besides, you guys are pretty much dead anyway."
Kairi sighed and sat down. I saw that she made her keyblade disappear, so I did as well, but I remained standing. Kairi looked up at me and pulled me down next to her. I didn't really trust this guy, but I knew that he wouldn't hurt us, and he would be able to give us information, so I didn't get up again.
"First off," he said, "I actually died in a special way, and that is why I am here."
"How did you die?" I asked.
He sighed. "I was hoping that you would figure out this secret by yourself, but I guess I will have to explain it to you. It doesn't really matter how I died, because no matter what happened, I would have died in a special way."
He paused a moment and allowed us to think about what he said. I figured out what he meant after a few seconds, but an obvious problem formed in my head.
"So if everyone dies in their own special way and ends up here," I said cautiously, "where is everyone?"
"I already told you that I have been trying to get your attention, so how easy would it be to have other people that don't want your attention? Besides, the only people that are still here are the people that are remembered by others.
"Now, here is another secret, but first I am going to let you try to figure it out. Do you know where we are?"
"We are behind a barrier," I said, "and we are somewhere similar to the realm of darkness." I looked at Kairi, and she nodded in agreement.
He sighed. "Well, we are on the other side of a barrier which happens to be breaking currently, but this is not similar to the realm of darkness. Where we are is actually quite an amazing place. The area we are in is a perfect reflection of the world above us."
"But wouldn't we have run into something by now? Like a building?"
"Well," he said, "the area you two have been walking around in actually happens to be a flatland, but in the area past me you will enter the area that is known as the World That Never Was."
Kairi and I silently digested the information, but he continued to talk.
"So, recently you have been trying to get your other selves to break the barrier above us, correct?"
We nodded and didn't bother to ask him how he had figured that information out.
"But," he continued, "Have you thought about the consequences that this action creates?"
We sat silently, unable to comprehend all this new information at once.
"Fortunately, I have come up with a solution, but you will have to be willing to leave your other selves out of it until the time comes."
I hesitated and looked at Kairi. She nodded, so I assumed that it was okay to trust him. My shoulder relaxed and I faced him calmly. "So, what do we have to do?"
…
Axel's glistening eyes looked at me playfully as he pulled out his chackrams. I made Oblivion disappear and stared at Demyx. Was this a joke? Axel was on our side, and there was no way that he would change his stubborn mind. But, he was captured, and the Organization would not just let a traitor off the hook.
"A-axel?" I stuttered.
His gaze became confused as he stared at me. "And how do you know my name?"
"I-" I chocked back a sob as I stared into my best friend's eyes. How could he forget me? After all we have been through? I fell on my knees and looked into his eyes. "It's me! Roxas."
He tilted his head to the side and rotated his chackrams in his hands. "I don't know what you are talking about, but I do know this: you are enemies to the Organization, and I cannot let you pass!" He encased his chackrams in fire and hurled it at me.
I could only stare into the flames coming towards me. How could fire be so passionate, and then suddenly turn so vicious? Aqua summoned another reflect spell encased with water which quenched the flame and returned the chackram to the Nobody's hand. Namine stood in front of me and put her hands on my shoulders. "Come on Roxas!" she said. "You have to at least defend yourself!"
I looked down and drew my hood over my face while I made Oblivion disappear. I could feel her gaze boring into me, but I was too broken to think about it. All I could think about were those dazzling green eyes…
"Hey!" Ven shouted. I turned my head towards his voice, but I kept my eyes down. "You have to pull it together," he continued. "You forgot your memories, but Axel stuck with you to the end! He told you all of your memories, and you can't just abandon him now just because he doesn't remember you at the moment!"
I looked up at his glistening eyes that seemed to look straight through me. I stood up and held Namine's hand as I summoned Oblivion in my other one. My head jerked back and revealed my golden spikes, and my eyes darted towards the portal appearing next to Axel.
"How touching," said a familiar voice. Xeninam pulled away her hood to reveal her glistening purple eyes as she smirked. "Sadly, you will have to be forced to actually tell him his memories, because I destroyed any memories where you were in his life."
Axel flinched and let his chackrams fall and turn into flames. He grasped his head and looked over at Xeninam. "What do you mean? I was never-"
"Of course not," she replied smoothly. "I am just entertaining our guest before we capture him and his group." She summoned her keyblade while Axel regained his posture and re-summoned his weapons.
So there was hope in rekindling his memories! I narrowed my gaze as I slowly walked towards her. I heard Aqua and Ven shifting their posistion on my left and felt Namine's left shoulder brushing up next to me. I tightened my grip on my keyblade as Xeninam got into a defensive position, and Namine left my side in order to assist Ven with fighting Axel.
Xeninam scoffed as she looked at me. "You really think you have any hope? Just surrender now and I will save you from the embarrassment of losing to a girl."
In response I struck Oblivion out towards her chest and she blocked it with her black keyblade. I heard the clash of weapons to the left, but I blocked it out and concentrated the sound of my breathing. Time seemed to slow down, but hey? It could have simply been a slow spell from Aqua, yet my conscious told me that it was not the case. I trusted that my friends would protect me from getting attacked by Axel or Demyx, and I concentrated all of my force into an uppercut. She stepped back and thrust her weapon towards my nonexistent heart, but I easily turned to the right and punched her in the side. She gasped and fell over, but I didn't waste time knocking her keyblade far away from her reach and placing a foot on her chest to stop her movement.
I calmly looked down at her and kept my weight pressed down on her, but she didn't struggle. "Tell me," I demanded, "How do I get his memories back?"
She smirked as she summoned a portal below her. I was tempted to follow her, but I did not want to abandon my friends. I faintly heard her whisper as the portal disintegrated. "You don't."
I shot my head angrily towards my left. I was angry at how she had destroyed his memories, but I was even angrier at myself for not being able to stop her from doing it. Aqua obviously had the better of Demyx, but Namine and Ven were struggling against Axel. I closed my eyes in concentration and opened them as I summoned wind and held my hand towards Axel. His chackrams flew out of reach, and when he tried to get them, Ven and Namine blocked him. He growled in annoyance and looked at me curiously as he summoned his portal and quickly left.
Demyx was on the ground and Aqua looked very un-Aqua-like with a smug on her face. They were both drenched in water, but they didn't seem to mind. Demyx started to form a portal, but it dwindled away since he didn't have enough energy to hold it. He glared up at us and sat upright even though Aqua's keyblade was right under his chin. "So what do you want?" he demanded. "Do you want to kill me now? You might as well, I was never anything more than a speck on these stupid worlds anyway."
Bargin with him. We need him on our side, and there is no point in causing useless death. Promise him that he can have his own heart if he joins us.
I turned away from Demyx and whispered, "How?"
Just trust me on this. It can happen, and if he dies now, he would never get the chance.
I looked at Demyx curiously. Was it really worth it to kill him? It wasn't really his fault that he joined the Organization. Sure he could have left, but he was not the kind of person to do that, even if he hated his job. "We're going to let you choose," I said.
Aqua looked at me oddly, but I just nodded to her and continued. "We could easily kill you now, or you can join us and help us. If you give your support, you will be rewarded."
"Rewarded?" He scoffed. "Please, what kind of reward would you give me that would give me a reason to live?"
"A heart."
Demyx looked stunned for a moment, but then he snapped out of it and laughed. "Did you really think that I would fall for that? I have been searching for a heart for my whole existence, but I still don't have one. How would you get me one?"
"I just will," I stated bluntly. "But if you would rather die regretting that you might have had an existence, that is your loss." I held up my keyblade and started to swing down.
"Wait!" he said quickly. I lowered my keyblade. "I-I accept your offer. I'll help you, but if I get any hint from you that you are messing with me, then I am ditching you guys."
"Deal," I said. I held out a hand to help him up, and he gladly took it. Once he was up he dusted his cloak and the water drenching him seemed to evaporate.
"So," he said. "Where are we headed?"
I relaxed and made my keyblade disappear. "Where do you think? Our next stop is the Castle That Never Was."
Heart'sgem: SOOOO... I was waiting for a friend to draw me a picture of Demyx's Somebody, but he/she wasn't able to, so you just have to use your imagination!
Sora: I HATE using my imagination!
Heart'sgem: Stop being a bad role model! So, this is going to probably be my last chapter story on FanFiction... I will be posting the rest of the chapters daily, since I have already written them. I might make another chapter story during the summer when I am bored, but I will make sure that the whole story is written before I post it next time. I hope to be able to write one-shots when I am able, but it is hard to keep up with a chapter story. I am sorry for the disappointment, and I hope you enjoy the rest of Breaking the Barrier!
