Title: Too Far
Rating: K+ (1 swear word or so?)
Summary: In an argument, Bunny takes it too far, much too far... Death isn't the only thing winter's good for.
It wasn't supposed to be anything like this, this stupid meeting. The five guardians stood in the previously cozy room, two of which practically at each others throats. There was an attempt to interrupt the steadily escalating argument, but they were in vain, and eventually North, Sandy, and Tooth just tried to distract themselves with other things.
For some reason, Jack and Bunny always clashed during their meetings, but always to different degrees of seriousness... Normally they were just playful and over frivolous things, but this fight... By this point, no one was even sure what had caused a snap in Bunny's sympathy for the winter spirit, and it was just like an eruption of rage. Perhaps it had been Jack dumping a load of snow right on the poor rabbit's head, or maybe the jabbing remarks? Either way, the acid in both of their words was astonishing to the guardians of childhood who remained on the sidelines.
Jack's eyes narrowed dangerously as Bunny snarled cruel words at him, his paws clenched and nails digging into the soft pads, "We didn't need another guardian, mate, and especially not one as lazy and irresponsible as you!" the oversized rabbit practically hissed at the boy, baring his teeth.
Jack had to force himself not to just full out freeze the stupid Easter guardian, his own fist white from squeezing his staff in an attempt to contain his rage. He was struggling to keep his emotions in check as he felt his self esteem slowly start to shatter more and more at each hurtful word and his temper shorten even more... Whoever made the axiom about the sticks and stones and words was full of shit because they certainly did hurt.
"I don't need you patronizing me, Kangaroo, I do my job, but you wouldn't know because it's not like you're a seasonal!" Jack started, hating how his voice was slightly shaky, but he forced himself to defend his pride, even though it was rather futile considering once Bunnymund got started, it was near impossible to make him stop before he was completely finished.
And yet despite the shakiness of Jack's voice, the slowly cracking mask of apatheticness, the pain that was showing through in his eyes, Bunnymund was more than happy to keep on shoving the envelope, his spring green eyes boring into Jack's as he said in a cold voice," Ah nah, Frostbite, I'm something much more important than a bloody seasonal; I'm the children's hope. I'm a symbol of spring; a time for new life, new hope! And you know what you are?" the guardian said with narrowed eyes, pleased to leave the open ended question.
"You're just a winter sprite who has no place here, or anywhere! All you do is kill things, Frostbite! You're winter, you just bring coldness, death, sickness! Humans can't handle your stupid snow all the time, and they die because of it!" Bunnymund proclaimed with just the hint of a cruel smile on his furry face.
SLAP.
Green eyes connected with darkened ice blue, and Bunny's face was an expression of shock as Jack panted heavily, tears finally falling in frozen hailstones as Bunny finally pushed him over the edge. Yes, Jack Frost had just slapped the Easter Bunny, and it was hard for anyone in the room to be surprised; the other three guardians finally zoning back into the conversation at Bunny's sudden sneers of death.
"You don't know anything about me! You don't know anything about my season, Rabbit!" Jack shouted, and the already chilled temperature seemed to plummet almost instantaneously. Frost began to creep over Bunny's cheek where Jack had struck it, coating the fur in a thick layer as ice spiderwebbed out from where Jack stood, his rage causing the snow outside to sharpen and harden, ice scratching and banging against the windows of Santoff Claussen as the Wind howled in harmony. How dare they?! To accuse its child of heinous crimes! Even if they were true, it was simply a cycle of life! It had to be done, and for Bunnymund to call its child a murderer?
Screams of a blizzard brewed outside as Jack snarled," You're an idiot if you think all my season does is kill! Of course people and animals die in my blizzards, you think I don't know that? But it's part of life, Bunny, and I can't help making storms, it's what HE created me to do!"
The winter spirit's eyes had darkened to a dangerous shade, his skin paling and extremities tinging an even darker shade of blue as the temperature further dropped, freezing any and all liquids in the room. Tooth's feathers ruffled as she shuffled closer to North for warmth, trying to call out, to tell Bunny to stop... Tell Jack to stop... But the wind drowned out hers and North's calls, Sandy's signs obviously going unnoticed.
"If you do not want me here, then fine, I'll go, but just an FYI, 'Roo, I'm not a winter sprite... I'm The Spirit of Winter." And jerking out of his stiff, offensive pose, Jack made for the large window. Tossing it open, he leaped out into the howling storm and was gone, leaving sharp, pure ice behind him, and a small pile of hailstone tears.
Bunny's eyes were wide with shock, as he was still processing the slap, the angry words, the tears, and oh God, what had he done? What had he just done? And-
His claws were suddenly grabbing the fur on his chest, and it felt like something had just been extinguished in him; a small flame of belief. And at that moment, Bunny realized that he had just crushed and hope that Jack had gained in them.
What had he done?
As the temperature began to rise again slowly from the small remains of the fire, North, Tooth, and Sandy slowly surrounded Bunny who was staring at his paws, staring and flexing them. He had just crushed what he was supposed to be protecting... what type of guardian was he?
A heavy hand clamped down on Bunnymund's shoulder as North said grimly," We have to find him."
"Oh Bunny, what have you done...?" Tooth sighed softly as she examined the pebbles of tears from their youngest member... the baby of their ragtag family.
This will probably be two part, but I haven't really decided yet; I'll eventually get out the 4th part to It's Nothing, and maybe even the 3rd part to the 'What If' arc... Not sure if I want to continue that yet or not!
