At about this time, Anna and Kristoff were just entering the village of Arendelle. They are bringing Grand Pabbie to see if he is able to help Kristian with his problem in dealing with Goran's curse. By the time they reach the palace the sun is setting and the guest have left the palace. As they come to a stop there is only one servant there to greet them.
"How is Kristian doing?" asks Anna.
"It has been unpleasant, your majesty," replies the servant. "But the queen has prevented the fire from consuming the palace, so far."
As Anna was speaking to the servant, Kristoff has gone to the back of the cart; and he has pulled his hand cart down. With the hand cart on the ground, Kristoff now works to pull Grand Pabbie off the back of the cart. Right now, Grand Pabbie is rolled up; and he looks like a boulder. As Kristoff struggles with Grand Pabbie, Anna comes to the back of the cart.
"Here, let me help you," says Anna as she then assists Kristoff in placing Grand Pabbie down on the handcart.
"Your majesty, don't you want me to get some assistance for you?" asks the servant as he watches Anna and Kristoff work.
"No that's OK," replies a slightly agitated Anna. Anna wants to try and keep the trolls secrets, if she can. So Anna does not want to tell the servant who they are. "Kristoff and I can handle these rocks on our own."
"But what are the rocks for?" asks the servant. "How are rocks going to help the queen's friend?
"There um… special rocks," replies an uneasy Anna. "They have magical abilities that might be able to solve Kristian's problem."
As Anna was talking to the servant, Kristoff was going to try and move the young troll onto the handcart as well. However, this young troll unrolled himself, and then he jumps down on top of Grand Pabbie and rolls himself up again.
With the trolls on board the handcart, Kristoff begins to pull the handcart towards the palace. As he does, he calls out to Anna. "Come on Anna, I've got everyone load. Let's get into the palace."
"How did you get it loaded so fast?" asks the servant in amazement.
"Um.., like Anna said. These are magic rocks," replies Kristoff. "The second one just loaded itself."
"Loaded itself," says the servant. This servant does not believe what Kristoff is telling him. "Next you are going to say that the rocks can talk too."
"If they want to," replies a smiling Kristoff. "But we don't have time to prove that to you. Kristian needs us right now."
With that said, Kristoff and Anna begin to pull the handcart with the trolls into the palace. As they leave the servant turns towards Sven and the cart. With the servant's back turned towards Anna and Kristoff, the young troll unrolls and waves to the servant. Then the young troll says, "Bye!"
The servant then quickly turns around to look for who spoke up, and he just glimpses the young troll just finishing up his roll. "Did… did that rock just speak," says the servant in disbelief, as he watches the hand cart disappear into the palace.
It doesn't take Anna and Kristoff long to pull the hand cart to the cell that is Kristian's bedroom. As they enter the room, Anna and Kristoff see Elsa sitting on the edge of the stone slab with her hands lying on her lap. Meanwhile, Kristian was lying on the stone slab with his hands lying across his chest. At this time, both Elsa and Kristian were trying to avoid physical contact.
As Anna and Kristoff enter, Olaf is the first one to speak. "You're here!" exclaims Olaf as he comes trotting up to the pair. "We were wondering when you were going to show up!"
"We moved as fast as we could," replies Kristoff.
"Yes, but it seems we didn't need to rush," adds Anna. "I see that Kristian is feeling better."
"For the moment, but my current condition won't last," replies Kristian.
Just then the young troll unrolls and jumps down onto the floor. "Hiya!" exclaims the young troll as he gives a wave to Elsa and Kristian.
"Hello," replies Elsa. "I see that Grand Pabbie didn't come alone."
"Nope, he didn't!" exclaims the young troll. "I wanted to have an adventure, and I thought that checking out how you humans lived would be a good place to start."
Maybe we could show you around the palace later, but right now we need Grand Pabbie's help," replies Elsa. Then Elsa looks over at Grand Pabbie who is still rolled up. "Grand Pabbie?" asks a puzzled Elsa. She is wondering why Grand Pabbie hasn't unrolled yet.
"Oh Grand Pabbie has just fallen asleep again," replies the young troll. So the young troll walks over to Grand Pabbie. Then the young troll yells, "Hey Pabbie! Wake up!"
In response, Grand Pabbie unrolls and he rubs his ear because of the loud shout from the young troll. "Child, you do not need to shout so loud," says Grand Pabbie. "My hearing has not gone yet."
"Sorry Pabbie, but sometimes it can be difficult to get you up," replies the young troll. "I think that it is better to go all out, than to tiptoe around."
"There is such a thing as subtlety, young one," says Grand Pabbie. Then Grand Pabbie turns towards Elsa and Kristian and says, "Your majesty. I came as soon as I was told of the circumstances."
"Thank you for coming quickly, Grand Pabbie," replies Elsa.
"And this must be Kristian, then," continues Grand Pabbie.
"Um, hello," replies Kristian as he is uncertain about the help that Elsa has sent for.
Ah yes, I see that what Anna and Kristoff have told me is true. Your magic abilities have been accelerated," says Grand Pabbie as he sees the black lines on Kristian's face. "Now the question is what would have caused this undesirable reaction."
"It is happening because Kristian took the fire demon's curse of Goran's from him," replies Elsa.
The man who came here to do away with you, your majesty?" asks Grand Pabbie.
"Yes, he had the magic power over fire; and he wanted to destroy me. Goran wanted to absorb some of my magic to increase his own magic abilities," replies Elsa.
"I needed to take his magic in order to stop Goran," adds Kristian.
"It was fortunate for Elsa that you did," says Grand Pabbie. "However, by doing that you also took his need for destroying magical beings with the energy over the cold."
"I don't get it. Why would Goran and now Kristian need to destroy such people?" asks Anna.
"It is the nature of those that are cursed. They cannot coexist with those that are the opposite of themselves," replies Grand Pabbie.
Ya, but Elsa and Kristian have been getting along just fine with each other for a couple of months," objects Olaf. "Why hasn't he needed to do anything before?"
"Like Elsa, Kristian was born with his magic. Thus both of them are a part of the natural order of things," replies Grand Pabbie. "Even though nature can be violent and destructive at times, it will always go to a point of balance. As long as Elsa and Kristian can maintain that balance, the magical energies of fire and ice can peacefully coexist with each other. It is also possible for these magical forces to combine in new and unusual ways."
"However, with those that are cursed, their magic comes from going against the natural order of things. Thus, magical energy that is counter to their own is a grave threat to them. So for the cursed to continue to exist, they must continually extinguish the magic that is opposite to their own. If not, the curse will consume them," says Grand Pabbie.
"So what does this mean?" asks Elsa. "Kristian is now both born and cursed. How are we going to be able to help him?"
"Kristian own powers should have been able to keep the curse in check for a long time," replies Grand Pabbie. "The question becomes, what external force has now over activated this curse?"
"It was a living fire that took the crude shape of a man," replies Kristian. "I ran into it when I returned to my mountain home in the Wilderness."
"A living fire?" questions Grand Pabbie. "What you saw was not the real person behind the intelligence. It was simply a magical projection."
"A projection?" inquires Elsa. "You mean that it was a magical recreation of the person."
"Yes, but this recreation can only be made at a point where the creator's magic is already at," replies Grand Pabbie. "In this case, this point was most likely created by Goran. Since his curse would be the same magical energy as the creator of the curse. However, knowing this only gets us so far. We need to know which of the Fire Demons is responsible for this particular curse."
"Well the fire said that its name was Tollak," responds Kristian to the question.
"Tollak!" exclaims Grand Pabbie. "This is not good news."
"You know who this Tollak is, Grand Pabbie?" asks Kristoff.
"Yes, I am afraid that I do. Tollak is one of the oldest of the Fire Demons," replies Grand Pabbie. "It is said that Tollak's magic is almost unlimited. However, his physical form did not have the same advantage. You see, Tollak managed to use his magic to make himself immortal; but not without a cost. With all magical beings, their magic has the ability to continually grow. So for Tollak to make himself immortal, he had to push his magic abilities past the tolerances of his own mortal body. The consequences for this act caused his own magic to overwhelm his body."
"You mean what is happening to Kristian now, is what is happening to Tollak?" asks Anna.
"Yes; and while Tollak's magic may prevent him from dying, it cannot stop what is happening to his body. It is for this reason that he must seek out the magical energies over the cold."
"So what do we do now?" asks Elsa. "How can we help Kristian?"
"It is possible to slow down the progression of the curse, but not to reverse it," replies Grand Pabbie. "The only person who can stop the curse will be the one who created it."
"So we will go and talk with Tollak to remove it then," states Elsa with determination.
"That is a very dangerous task that you have set before yourself," replies Grand Pabbie. "The journey to Tollak's home is long, for he lives far north in the area of the Fire Glacier."
"How can this glacier be made out of fire?" asks Olaf. "I thought that glaciers were made of ice."
"The glacier is not made of fire," replies Grand Pabbie. "The glacier is named this because of the volcano that sits alongside the glacier. It is this volcano that is the home to Tollak. Few people have made the journey to this volcano, and almost no one leaves the volcano without being harmed."
"My magic will be able to protect me," says Elsa.
"It is your magic that Tollak wants," objects Anna. "If you go there, you will only be giving yourself to him."
"Elsa you cannot do this for me," adds Kristian. "You are the Queen of Arendelle. The people here depend on you. I am a nobody, compared to you."
"You are somebody to me, Kristian," replies Elsa with a gentle tone. "You are my friend and my savior. So you are just as important as anyone else in this room, and I think it is well worth the risk to help you."
Before Kristian can object again, Olaf says, "Kristian, you can't give up! The only other option is something that no one here wants to do. Allow Elsa to try and reason with Tollak. That way you will at least be given a chance."
Then with a tired sigh, Kristian says, "Elsa, I don't want you to take any unnecessary risks on my account. I will give my life if it means that you will be safe."
"She will be safe, because I will not allow Elsa to go alone. Because I will be going with her," states Anna as she steps up alongside of Elsa.
"Anna, no," replies Elsa as she looks over to her sister. "You don't need to take this risk as well."
"If you can take the risk, then so can I," replies Anna. "Kristian is my friend too."
Before Elsa can object, Kristoff interjects, "Since Anna is going with you, then I will accompany her."
"But…, begins to say Elsa.
However, before Elsa can finish with what she was going to say, Kristoff interrupts. "Elsa, you are going to be traveling to a place that is most likely going to be covered in snow and ice," says Kristoff. "You are going to need someone who knows how to travel in those conditions. My business is ice, and I spend a lot of time working in the winter. You could use someone like me; and with Sven's help, we can quickly get you to where you want to go."
"But who is going to stay and take care of Kristian?" asks Elsa in objection.
"Elsa, there are many people working at the palace that would be capable of taking care of Kristian," replies Anna. "You could leave orders with the palace staff, for his care."
"I will stay here as well," adds Grand Pabbie. "With my understanding of magic, I will be able to help control the magical surges that will arise."
"Hooray!" shouts the young troll. "This will be an adventure! If Grand Pabbie stays, then so do I!"
"But you will need help Grand Pabbie," interjects Elsa. "Most people would be wary of your presence here in the palace."
"That's OK Elsa. I will stay here, so that I can help my buddy Kristian," chirps Olaf. "He will need a friendly face that he can relate too."
"But Olaf, I don't think that you should do it all on your own," objects Elsa politely.
Before Olaf has the opportunity to reply, Kristian speaks up. "Elsa, if you are going to go on this mission, it would be best if you took someone along that you can trust. There are few people who would go to such extreme lengths to help you, and Anna is one of those individuals. "I would feel better if you did take Anna and Kristoff with you. Besides, Olaf will be able to assist me on his own."
"Will you be alright with just Olaf's help?" asks Elsa.
"I will be fine, even if I get driven a little crazy" replies Kristian with a smile.
Don't worry; I will keep all the weirdoes away from you," chirps Olaf. "It will just be you and me all day long. Every day until Elsa returns."
"And the mental anguish begins," says Kristian with a smile.
With this remark; Elsa, Anna, and Kristoff begin to laugh. Then after a moment, Elsa says, "Very well, I will accept Anna's and Kristoff's help. Now if everyone will excuse me, I need to make preparations for our departure tomorrow morning."
With this said, Elsa graciously takes her leave of everyone in the room. This is because Elsa needs to inform her council of her departure, and she also needs to notify the captain of her fastest ship of her mission. If Elsa can get going quickly, then she will be able to help Kristian as early as possible.
