I saw the morning sun rising and I looked over at Chauvelin. This was the morning that the plan was to go into action. I saw Elton and Farleigh in their guard uniforms, waiting for us. They chained us and led us out like any of the guards so nobody suspected a thing and were carted to the town square. I saw then that those on the scaffold were not the regular guards but the league and my father was in the executioner's cloak.
Chauvelin and I were forced up to the scaffold and then forced to our knees to wait. The citizens were angrily shouting "Death to the Regime!" One of the bounders, Hal, disguised as a priest carried out his part, asking if we had any last confessions. He and I held hands as best as we could and bowed our heads for our final prayer. As we were bowing our heads; a voice shouted "Halt this execution!"
A guard I recognized to be Armand dragged a bound and gagged Robespierre to the scaffold. A masked man accompanied him and I knew instantly that it was Percy. He finally calmed the citizens and asked "Will all of you accept the head of Robespierre? He is the real reason all innocent nobility are dead. He persuaded all in the tribunal to turn dark. He took those in the tribunal away from their families. Can you really ask now for the death of one who was now trying to negotiate peace and for his wife to die as well?"
There was muttering among the citizens and we were told to rise. The Pimpernel turned to Chauvelin and asked "Do you denounce Citizen Robespierre?" "I do, prepare him for the guillotine" Chauvelin answered as he was unchained. I was unchained as well and stood by my husband, watching the action unfold.
The other bounders placed Robespierre in the guillotine and I saw he wasn't resisting. "Is he already dead" I whispered to Percy. "No; we dosed him with sleeping powder earlier" he replied. With that; there was a gunshot before the blade fell for the last time and Robespierre's head fell to the scaffold. At last; the Pimpernel announced "This is the end of regime. I believe Citizen Chauvelin has some last words."
Chauvelin's P.O.V
I hadn't been able to speak until I denounced Robespierre. It was finally sinking in that I was free from corruption and I could now make amends. I finally stepped forward and made this announcement "Citizens; I beg your forgiveness. I was corrupted by power and that was not the best way to live. I have reason though to change, my wife. She and I have not been married long and now with this freedom, new life can begin." I paused a moment and turned to Cassidy, offering her my hand and I led her forward.
I finally continued "I also announce that I am leaving France for good to begin this new life. Also my dear wife is no ordinary woman. Before the regime fell; I married Cassidy for peace but through the time; she made me see what a monster I had become. Ladies and gentlemen; I present the woman who changed me for the better and who I am grateful to share my last name with. I present her royal highness; Cassidy Elizabeth Chauvelin, Princess of Wales." There was much talk then as the citizens looked at Cassidy and either began bowing or curtsying. I finally said my last words to the citizens and those were "Citizens, disperse for good. No longer will innocent heads fall!" The other bounders destroyed the guillotine once and for all and now peace and healing could come.
When all was done; Cassidy and I followed the others back to Michelon. We got on 'The Daydream' and I went below deck to check on Cassidy. Hal and Elton had carried down to one of the cabins after she had passed out in exhaustion before we reached the docks. Her father was sitting in a chair by the bed and I carefully approached the bed. "How is she doing your majesty" I asked. "She should feel better after a nice rest. I can't begin to imagine what you two have been through these last few days" her father answered, looking down at her.
I took another chair and sat at Cassidy's other side and her father asked "Would you explain why she is scarred on her side?" I was silent a moment before replying "Cassidy was going to the market and I had offered to go with her. She had said she would be alright and gave me a return time. I got worried when that time came and she hadn't returned."
Pausing a moment; I shuddered at the memory of that day, finding Cassidy surrounded by her crimson blood and I continued "I took off at once to find her and I found out my soldiers had accused her of being a tart and a rebel and had stabbed her. They had not found out about the marriage until that moment. They were the ones though who warned us about the mob and they begged Cassidy for her forgiveness; which she granted."
"I am thankful she is still alive and you were there to save her" her father replied. "I am grateful she is alive too. I had feared she would be upset with me for not protecting her; for dishonoring my vow to her" I answered. "Did she ever accept your love toward her" her dad asked. "We were working on that when we were told to flee. She did finally call me husband after I calmed her from the attack. Now I pray she and I will have a proper chance to be happy" I answered. "I commend you for finally opening her heart. I need to leave now for awhile. You should stay here with her" her father said, getting up and leaving the cabin.
I stayed by Cassidy's side every minute that day, relieved to have my freedom from being a corrupt officer and to finally have a new start with Cassidy. I didn't count on one thing though; her finding out the truth and my attempts at having to convince her that I love her again.
