She had been nervous about going to elementary school. Her mother had always told her how she would make new friends and have fun to calm her worries, but now that her mother was gone, all the worries and fear had come back. As she fidgeted with the end of one of her braids in her seat, she heard a very familiar laugh from behind her. She didn't dare turn around to look, she didn't need to. There was no way she could forget that laugh. It was him. The Boy.
At recess, she walked around the playground, looking for him. She was so focused on finding the boy, that when someone had pulled on one of her braids and ruined her concentration, not to mention the braids were done by her grandmother, she immediately spun around and sent an angry kick to their shins. She was surprised to find the victim of what her dad called "Katie's Killer Kick" the boy she had been searching for all along. She quickly apologized, full of embarrassment and regret. As she accompanied him to the nurse's office, she told him that the braids had been done by her grandmother and were very special, leaving out the fact that she had been searching for him. He smiled the same bright smile that had warmed her heart over the summer and said he had been trying to get her attention, sending her in a fluster that made her cheeks go pink. She couldn't believe he had been looking for her as well! Her happiness made her decide to hum her mother's song while the nurse had gone to go get the boy an ice pack. When she finished, she turned to him and asked what he thought of it. To her shock and dismay, he snapped at her, telling her that she was a lousy singer. Hurt and tears filling her eyes, she kicked his other shin, and ran off, heart broken by her first love. Was this the same boy she had seen at the forest that summer? She didn't want to believe it.
