The knocking on the hotel room door finally drew Lexi from the comfort of sleep. With a groan she glanced at the alarm clock. The red numbers glowed six-thirty. She felt as if she'd just fallen asleep. With a wry smile, she realized that was the truth. She'd been in bed only a few hours. In a rush the reason for her lack of sleep came to her. It was impossible not to smile. Spending time with Adam was worth losing a couple hours of sleep.
When the knocking didn't stop, she forced herself to get up. She shuffled to the door and looked out of the peep hole. Surprise moved through her as she opened the door. A hotel employee stood beside a heavily laden cart. The tantalizing scent of breakfast drifted to her. She stepped back to allow him entrance.
"Morning, ma'am." He greeted as he wheeled past her. He stopped near the window and turned to face her. He held out a small, cream colored card.
As if she needed the missive to know who it was from. Only one person would do something so thoughtful. However, she took the card and handed him a tip. With a small wave he left the room. Lexi studied the vase of yellow flowers on the cart as she thoughtfully tapped the card against her palm. This was entirely too much. But, a huge part of her was thrilled. No one had ever done something so nice before.
Lexi crossed to the bed and sat on the edge. With a fingernail, she opened the card.
Breakfast is the most important meal of the day. After the night you had, you'll need it. Enjoy.
With a smile Lexi reached for her phone. She quickly pulled up Adam's number and sent a text.
Thank you for breakfast! I will definitely enjoy it.
After she hit send, she stroked her thumb over the glossy screen. She felt like a giddy teenager. Romance was something she'd sorely lacked in her life. Most of the guys she'd dated had been one hit wonders. They rarely lasted more than a year. Once they showed their true colors, things quickly fell apart.
That had definitely been the case with the last Mr. Right. Danny Richards had waltzed into her life when she had given up on dating. He was everything she wanted; calm, suave, and carefully controlled. He'd made her feel safe and appreciated at first. It wasn't until she'd moved in that she realized Mr. Perfect was so not what she had thought. Danny had a dark side that she couldn't begin to uncover. He'd had an entire harem at his disposal. And he expected Lexi to join in the festivities as often as he demanded. When she had refused, it had disintegrated into a fight of epic proportions. He had hurled a myriad of insults at her. He'd even gone so far as to say her weight was the main reason he wanted to fuck other women. That wound had cut deeper than she would ever admit. She hated to admit that one person's opinion had affected her so deeply. But what woman could hear those words and not be hurt? Because of that, she was incredibly hesitant to commit to a relationship.
With a sigh she looked down at the card she still held. She hoped Adam was a different story. She wanted him to be different. She wanted to take him at face value and not worry that something sinister lurked beneath the surface. He was charming and witty and made her feel all kind of things she hadn't felt in a while. Deep down, she thought she could really fall for him. The thought of falling head over heels in love again petrified her. Setting the card down on the bed, she admitted that it was still too soon to tell. While she wasn't ready for a serious commitment, there was no reason why they couldn't see where things went. If a relationship blossomed, she would face it head on. Until then, she was going to let nature take it's course.
Forcing herself from her thoughts, she crossed the room to the cart. She lifted the sterling lid and sighed deeply. Scrambled eggs, bacon, and toast were neatly arranged on the white plate. It looked absolutely delicious. So did the bowl of fresh fruit salad. Pulling up a chair, she picked up the fork and enjoyed her breakfast.
Lexi was impatient to arrive at the arena. She hadn't received a response to her thank-you text. She resisted the temptation to play What If. There had to be a perfectly logical reason why he hadn't answered her text. There was absolutely no reason for her to doubt Adam. He had been nothing but genuine from the start.
She found a parking spot near the side entrance that had been secured for them. She quickly pulled her bags from the trunk and made a beeline to the building. Her eyes darted across the bustling hallway as she moved. With a sigh, she realized there was no sign of Adam. Glancing at her watch, she saw she didn't have long to look for him. She had to be ready to start work in less than thirty minutes.
She stopped by her station long enough to drop off her heavy cases. Scanning the crowded area, she decided to stop by catering first. More than likely that was where she would find him. She followed the throng of people, returning greetings as she went. She waved to Nattie as she passed. When she arrived at catering, she felt herself deflate. Adam was nowhere in sight. A frustrated sigh escaped her as she looked around the room again. Cursing her luck, she crossed her arms over her chest.
"Well, look what the cat drug in." Seth's voice was close behind her.
She glanced at him over her shoulder. "You look worse than I do."
His laughter was contagious. Lexi looked at her friend, her lips quirking into a smile.
"I get beat up for a living. What's your excuse?" Seth asked as he leaned his shoulder against hers.
Seth was glad to see Lexi in such a good mood. It wasn't often she allowed herself to be so relaxed. Something must be very right in her world.
"I was up half the night." Lexi said.
"Did you eat the sushi in catering again? I told you that stuff is poison." Seth joked.
"No way, Rollins. I learned my lesson the hard way."
"So, wanna tell me what kept you up?" Seth asked even though he had a sneaking suspicion of the cause.
The tell-tale blush was more than an answer for him. However, he wasn't about to let the subject drop so easily. He nudged her with his shoulder.
"You and Rose seeing a lot of each other?"
Lexi couldn't hide the blush that flooded her cheeks. Just the thought of Adam made her feel giddy. She glanced at Seth.
"Something like that."
Seth wrapped an arm around her shoulders and gave her a squeeze. "I'm glad, Lexi. You deserve to be happy."
Lexi found herself leaning into his embrace. She had no doubt that Seth meant every word. He had been her biggest supporter since the beginning. He was always there to cheer her on. His approval meant more to Lexi than she cared to admit.
"Thanks, Seth." Lexi murmured as he pulled away. He reached out and affectionately ruffled her hair.
"I'm just happy you found an asshole you can tolerate." Seth grunted softly as Lexi's elbow landed in his stomach.
"Adam is not an asshole." Lexi said emphatically. "In fact, he's very sweet."
Seth batted his eyes at Lexi and started blowing kisses. "Lexi and Adam sitting in a tree, K-I-S-S-I-N-G..."
Lexi punched harder than Seth would have thought. She smacked him soundly on the shoulder. If he hadn't known her so well, he would have thought she was angry. But the blush on her cheeks and the sparkle in her eyes told a different story. Lexi was absolutely enamored with Adam Rose.
"As long as Lexi doesn't come home with a baby carriage, it's all good." Seth said as he rubbed his shoulder.
"That's none of your business!" Lexi sputtered as she looked at her friend.
She loved Seth to pieces but his teasing was hitting a little too close to home. She would die of embarrassment if Seth found out she indeed had intimate thoughts about Adam. It was something she could barely admit to herself, much less anyone else.
"Now you know how babies are made, right?" Seth winked at Lexi as he patted her hand.
"I am not about to have this conversation with you!" Lexi bit her lip in an attempt to hold back the laughter.
She loved this silly side of Seth. He always had a way of easing her fears and making any situation seem manageable.
"Just remember not to hold hands or drink after him." Seth gave Lexi a completely serious look but his eyes danced with merriment. "We don't want the stork coming to visit in nine months."
A mischievous gleam lit Lexi's eyes as she wrapped her arm around Seth's waist. "You're probably going to greet the stork before I will. In case you've gotten, you're getting married in a couple of months."
Seth couldn't stop the wide grin that split his face. "Three months, two weeks and four days to be exact."
It was no surprise that Seth knew the wedding date down to the minute. It was all he could think about. He wanted to marry Thea more than anything. Nothing was going to stand in his way.
"Speaking of my beautiful fiance, she's meeting us in Chicago." The happiness in Seth's voice was contagious.
She hugged Seth's waist then leaned against him. "How long will she be with you?"
"Just a couple of days." Seth sighed heavily.
He loved having Thea with him and hated when she returned to their little apartment in Florida. He consoled himself with the fact that it was only a little longer until the wedding. He could make it. He didn't have much of a choice.
Lexi patted Seth's hip. "It will do you some good to spend time with her."
Seth's brows wiggled suggestively. "If that's what you wanna call it."
Lexi's nose wrinkled as she realized Seth's mind was already in the gutter. When it came to Thea, it didn't take long for that to happen.
"Gross, Rollins! I don't need to know what you're planning on doing with my friend."
"Your friend, my almost wife." Seth winked at Lexi as his arm fell away from her.
"So what do you say to a double date? Thea said she wants to meet your new man."
Lexi felt the blush go all the way to her toes. She knew she couldn't keep Adam a secret. For one thing, Seth couldn't keep a secret to save his life. For another, she was giddy with excitement. Getting to share her new found happiness with Thea was just icing on the cake.
"Sounds great. I'll talk to Adam." Lexi said. She glanced at her phone, realizing she was more than a few minutes behind schedule.
Seth ruffled her hair again before turning on his heel. Lexi watched him disappear into the crowd. With a shake of her head, she once again realized how lucky she was to count Seth and Thea among her friends. With a smile, she shoved her phone into her pocket and set her mind on the work ahead.
It was almost midnight before Lexi caught up to Adam. She sat on the hood of her rental, watching the arena door swing open. Hope flared each time the heavy door was pushed. A sigh of relief left her as she watched Adam exit the building. She slipped from her seat and stood beside the car. His gaze locked on her almost instantly. She saw the slow smile that crossed his face and felt her blood heat. He bid a quick good-bye to Sami Zayne and started toward her. When he reached her, he pulled her into his embrace.
"Where have you been hiding?" Adam's deep voice sent a shiver of pleasure down her spine. "I've missed you terribly."
Lexi smiled slightly as she lifted her face for a kiss. He brushed his lips across hers before tucking her against his side.
"I texted you this morning and I never heard back."
Adam frowned slightly as he looked at her. "I never got a text from you."
Lexi chewed on her bottom lip thoughtfully. Surely, there had to be a logical explanation as to why he hadn't received it. Technology was not a perfect thing. Perhaps her message was still floating in space somewhere. Not that it mattered. Adam was with her now, that was the important thing. She forced the thought from her mind as she looked up at him. His eyes glimmered in the low light. It was hard to concentrate on the conversation with his eyes watching her so intently.
"Let's forget about the text. I wanted to thank you in person, anyway." Lexi murmured as she reached up to lightly grasp the lapels of his coat. She tugged him closer, her eyes going straight to his lips.
Adam arched a brow as he looked at her. While he had no idea what she was going on about, he wanted to kiss her again. He leaned down, lightly drawing his lips across hers. He couldn't stop the sigh that escaped as he drew her flavor deep. Nothing made him feel like this. Being with Lexi made him feel things a man waited a life time for. She was sweet and sassy and made him think about the future. He wanted nothing more than to spend every possible moment with her. He had the distinct feeling that if he allowed himself, he would quickly fall head over heels in love with her.
He reluctantly pulled away and leaned his forehead against hers. "Now what was that for?"
"You know what you did." She murmured as she ran her hands down his sinewy arms. She looked up at him from under lowered lashes.
"Care to give me a clue, love?" Adam asked as he drew his thumb across her check.
Confusion crept into her expression. "This morning? Room service?"
The feeling of warm contentment was giving way to concern. Something about the conversation gave her an uneasy feeling.
Adam kept his voice low as the Usos walked past them. "Darling, I promise if room service is involved I would remember."
The heat in his words brought on a new rush of sensation. However, it didn't last long as realization dawned. He had no idea what she was talking about. Fear crept along her spine. If it wasn't Adam, then who was it? What mysterious stranger would be brazen enough to do something like that?
Lexi shook her head as the rush of possibilities. Seth? She quickly discounted the idea. He would have been quick to admit he had done it. So, who then? She didn't like the alternative. Someone was spending too much attention on her. She made the decision to call the hotel and see if they would tell her anything. She hoped that they would. More than likely, it was completely innocent, but she didn't want to take any chances.
She forced a smile as she looked at him, "Never mind. So are you ready to leave?"
His lips quirked up into a smile. He was not going to miss the opportunity to spend a few hours alone with Lexi. He had no problem driving to the next show with her. In fact, he was greatly looking forward to having her all to himself.
