SEASON 1 BEFORE STORYBROOKE

The whole time August was away Emma waited eagerly for his return. She hoped that he would learn to love her, and maybe not feel the need to be some responsible hero. Soon she begins to notice feeling different and then she missed her time of the month. Emma panicked and headed down to the small jail store where she was able to pick up a pregnancy test. She already knew what it would say but when it confirmed her fears she didn't know what to do. At that moment a guard walked in to give her mail. After reading the letter from Emma's court appointed lawyer aloud, the female guard saw the pregnancy test. She didn't seem to notice the worry radiating off of the inmate because a grin broke out across the guards face and she congratulated Emma. Emma just grimaced in response.

The guard left while ignoring the grimace. Meanwhile, August had been moved to another cell block and he was unable to visit Emma as much as he had hoped to. Nancy, the female prison guard, was in the little camera room talking to another guard and August happened to be manning the cameras. The woman in block thirteen, I think her name is Emma Swan," August began to pay attention to the story when he heard Emma's name, "well turns out someone got her knocked up before she got herself locked up." The guard chuckled at what she saw as a poor criminal's misfortune but August just turned back to the computer screen, his mouth hanging open. Was it possible that he was going to be a father? That night he snuck to Emma's cell to find her with tears in her eyes.

"Hey August," she said and attempted to wipe away the tears.

"Emma what's wrong?" He asked deciding that it would be better if she told him instead of relying on his previous information.

"Nothing," she said faking a smile.

He came and sat next to her, gently putting his arm around her and for a moment nothing felt romantic, they were just them Emma and August and he would always take care of her and that's all that he needed to know. "Emma you can't lie to me, trust me I know a lot about lying,"

Emma didn't seem to believe it, "August I haven't ever seen you lie."

"Not to you but I haven't told you much about me before we met." He said sadly.

"You were seven how much could there be to tell?" She asked with a small laugh through her persistent tears.

"Emma Ruby before I picked you up in the woods I had a father, his name was Gep…" August stalled realizing that the name Gepetto wouldn't seem believable with the story that he was about to tell. "Yeah his name was Gep and anyway I never had a mom so try as he might to raise me to be a good honest kid, I lied…. A lot. It often got me into trouble. One time I lied to my father and told him that I would go to school but instead I went to the neighborhood near my house," he mentally thought which just happened to be an ogre cave, "and I thought it would be funny to watch this giant, hair, smelly neighbor that I had. Unfortunately he caught me and instead of just taking me home, he tied me up," planning to make soup out of me he added silently.

"That's crazy didn't your father call the cops?" Emma asked wondering what the point of this story was other than to prove that August had always been quite unlucky.

"Not exactly… I got away and returned home and my dad was thrilled to have me back," August said laughing.

Emma laughed as well and then she got the point, the point was to make her smile; it didn't matter if the story was crazy at least she had forgotten about her problems for a moment. "Not fair," she said, "you can't make me smile I was all depressed." She said but somehow with him there she felt as if everything was going to be alright. Then she stopped that thought, it was what got her into this mess in the first place.

"So what's the deal?" He asked.

"Well August you see…" She couldn't bring herself to finish the statement.

He scooted closer to her, "You don't have to say it Emma I know."

"You do?" She asked.

"One of the other guards let it slip." He said.

Emma was crying again, "It was that darn Nancy wasn't it!" Emma giggled and August laughed before looking at Emma and his rush of feeling returned but most strongly he felt the love that he had spent years trying to ignore.

"What do you think Auggy?" Emma said leaning on him and her childhood nickname felt natural despite the fact that they were both adults now and she was pregnant.

He wrapped his arm around her and with the other hand he wiped the tears from her eyes. "I honestly don't see why you're crying," he said and a smile broke out across his face.

Emma was shocked. "W-what?" She stuttered.

"Well Emma, I'm thrilled I mean, we always wanted a family and now we will have one. You are going to be an amazing mother and we can do this Emma. This baby will be lucky to have us and we will be lucky to have her… or him." August said holding Emma's hand

Emma pulled her hand away in shock and standing up she tried to distance herself from August, it was all happening too fast. She couldn't be someone's mom and this thing with August it wasn't like what she had with Neal. This was serious he loved her in a marriage, spend the rest of his life with her kind of way, and that scared her. "No we aren't doing this," she said the tears returning.

August moved to step towards her. "Emma, why not?" He asked.

"Because August, because this isn't going to work out, because I'm not ready, because it's not your baby." The last one slipped out before she could stop it.

August's face fell and she could tell how much she was hurting him. "That doesn't matter," he said.

Emma couldn't do this anymore, have him pity her and take care of her, she had to learn how to be okay on her own so she frowned. "August I love Neal, I never really loved you, I'm sorry." She said. "It is probably best if you just go."

August nodded deciding he had never been great at giving Emma personal space but now was a good time to start. "Emma, if you ever need me, I will be there."

She knew she shouldn't be able to ask anything of him after what she had just said but she needed to hear him say it. "What if I move?" She asked.

He was no longer facing her but he smirked because he knew what she wanted and it wouldn't matter so much if she really didn't love him. For a moment he thought he now had the power and he was tempted to say something else, anything else. He knew he couldn't do that to her. "Emma I will follow you anywhere," he said before walking out but he couldn't look at her or else he wouldn't be able to leave.

As he walked out Emma cried and she cursed herself for being so emotional. She regretted all the lies that she had told him, he thought he knew so much about lies but he had changed drastically from that little boy who lied to become a man with a kind and honest heart. If really could tell when Emma lied, then he would know that she loved him, and he would know that she was going to have his baby.

Will August ever find out? Will he return in time to meet the baby? Will the baby still end up with Regina?
