Chapter Thirteen

May smiled at her orange juice as Mrs. Scoggins talked about who knows what.

Merlin looked at her and didn't hide the dorky grin on his face.

May looked up at him and blushed, but didn't stop smiling.

"May?"

May's head snapped back to Mrs. Scoggins, her eyes wide. "Yes?" she answered.

"You're a bit distracted this morning, aren't you?" Mrs. Scoggins commented and glanced over at Merlin.

May shrugged and avoided eye contact as she drank her orange juice.

Mrs. Scoggins raised her eyebrows and lifted up her coffee cup. "Well, as I was saying," she continued. "A young lady called yesterday asking for you."

May sat up straight. "What?" she asked.

Mrs. Scoggins nodded and set her coffee cup down. "A Nancy," she replied.

"Nancy!" May exclaimed.

When she'd arrived in Texas, Merlin had let her use the house phone to call Nancy and tell her how she was doing.

"Who is she?" Mrs. Scoggins asked.

May opened her mouth.

"If I'm allowed to ask," Mrs. Scoggins added quickly.

May couldn't help smiling at her. "Nancy is my sister," she answered. "I called her when I first got here so that must be how she has the number."

Mrs. Scoggins lifted her coffee cup to take a sip. "Well, she seemed very excited," she commented.

May frowned. "Excited?" she repeated.

Mrs. Scoggins nodded.

What could she be excited about? May wondered.

"I think you should call her," Mrs. Scoggins told her.

"Right now?" May asked a bit uneasily.

"I don't think you should make her wait for any longer," Mrs. Scoggins replied.

May had a sick feeling in her stomach.

"Okay," she said.

"Don't worry, we'll give you some privacy, sweetheart," Mrs. Scoggins told her and stood up.

"We will?" Merlin asked and glanced up at his mother.

"Merlin!" Mrs. Scoggins gently smacked her son's shoulder.

Merlin grinned at her. "Alright, Mama," he answered and stood up.

May stood up too and slowly headed over towards where the wall phone was.

"Take as long as you like," Mrs. Scoggins told her.

May managed a smile and nodded.

Merlin looked at her, a bit concerned.

May glanced away from him.

"Hey," Merlin quickly strode over to her and lowered his voice, "are you okay?"

May nodded. "I'm just not sure what to expect," she answered.

But May thought that she did. Nancy had told her that she and Eric had been talking about having a baby. Nancy had been very excited about the idea. So why else would she call so suddenly, full of so much excitement?

Merlin nodded, not looking very convinced. "Come find me after," he told her.

May nodded again.

Merlin's fingers brushed over her arm before he quickly left the kitchen with his mother.

May stared at the telephone, willing her fingers to type in the number she could do in her sleep.

It wasn't that she wasn't happy that there would be a baby in the family. A niece or nephew to love and spoil. But May always thought she'd be married with children before Nancy. And as much as she didn't want to admit it, she hated Nancy for getting all of those things before her.

You're getting ahead of yourself, May thought. What if she's excited for some different reason? What if it's not a baby?

May finally typed in the number and brought it to her ear.

It rang three times before being answered.

"May?!"

"Nancy!" May answered, her heart swelling with happiness at the sound of her little sister's voice despite how she'd felt only a couple of seconds before.

"May, I'm so glad you called!" Nancy exclaimed.

May smiled. "Well, I'm glad you called," she replied. "I miss you."

"I miss you too," Nancy responded. "But apparently someone misses you more."

May frowned. "What?" she asked.

"Someone missed you so much, they ditched their dream to come find you."

May's heart began to pound wildly. "Nancy, what are you talking about?" she asked, trying to keep her voice even.

"Someone came home yesterday morning and immediately came here, looking for you," Nancy continued.

"Jonas."

May didn't know how long it had been since she'd said his name out loud.

"He came back for you, May."

May couldn't stop herself from tearing up as she clutched the phone tightly to her ear. "He did?" she whispered.

"May, he said leaving you was the worst mistake he ever made," Nancy answered.

"Jonas," May said his name again and leaned against the wall.

She could see his chocolate brown eyes and his dimpled smile. She could feel his arms around her. She could hear his laugh.

Everything. May hadn't forgotten a single thing about him.

"You have to come home, May," Nancy said.

May stood up straight.

Home.

May looked around.

I thought I was home.

"There's no point in going to California now if Jonas isn't there," Nancy pointed out.

May couldn't get any words out of her mouth.

"And don't even lie and say you were going to California for music," Nancy told her. "Everyone knew you were going after Jonas."

"I don't know if I can come home," May finally got out.

"What?!" Nancy cried out. "You have to, May! You can't lose Jonas again!"

"I was gonna stay here, Nancy," May admitted.

"May..."

Nancy knew who she was staying with. She'd known that there was something between May and Merlin before May had told her.

"I know it's stupid but he convinced me..." May stared at her feet, "that maybe this was forever."

"Oh, May..."

May shut her eyes tightly.

"But you still love Jonas," Nancy said.

May opened her eyes. "Of course I do," she answered. "I always will."

"But what about Merlin?"

"I just met him," May responded.

"Do you love him, May?"

May stared straight across from her and didn't answer.

Nancy didn't say a word, awaiting her response.

"I have to leave him," May finally whispered.

"If that's your choice, May," Nancy answered quietly.

May nodded even though she couldn't see her. "It's my choice," she agreed.

Nancy didn't say anything.

Tears slowly slid down May's cheeks.

I have Jonas now, she thought. Just like I've always wanted.

May slid down the wall, still clutching the phone to her ear.

But now I'm going to lose Merlin.

"When are you coming home?" Nancy asked.

May closed her eyes. "Whenever the next bus to Maine leaves."
