Chapter Thirteen

Katherine woke up slowly and it took her a minute to realize that she was sleeping on an empty bed. More importantly Klaus' empty bed. A lazy smile appeared on her face and she remembered last night. That incredible, magical night.

Katherine was still a bit confused herself. How had they ended up from hating each other to kissing to having sex? Though, Katherine had no desire to answer that question.

She wasn't even sure what she felt for Klaus, she was sure it wasn't hatred anymore, but it wasn't love either. She bit her lip, she had just slept with a man who had made her life a living hell for the past 500 years. Talk about ironic.

Katherine felt a whole bunch of emotions right now and her thoughts seemed to be zipping all over her brain. That was the thing about being human. Her emotions didn't seem to take a break.

Except where was Klaus?

Katherine went into her own room and took a shower. She dressed in a pair of dark jeans, a purple blouse, and dark high heel boots, taking more time on her makeup. She went downstairs and found Klaus sitting in the parrot drinking whisky.

"Isn't a little early for whisky?" she asked trying to take the bottle from him, but Klaus pulled it away.

"It is for humans."

Katherine rolled her eyes as she uncomfortably crossed her arms over her chest. "We need to talk about last night."

"What about it?"

She raised an eyebrow. "Well, for starters, what was it all about? I mean first you're planning my death and then you're kissing me out of nowhere."

Klaus raised his glance. "It didn't mean anything, sweetheart. Spur of the moment. Fireworks. Fireworks are over now. We were both bored and had nothing to do. Not a big deal."

Hurt. Betrayal. Humiliation. Those were all of the things that Katherine felt at that precise moment. She wanted to hit herself for even a second enjoying this. For the first time she didn't have something to say the only thing that came out was "Um."

"Anything else? I have other important things to be doing."

"No." she replied coldly as she turned around. "Believe it or not, I think I preferred it when you were trying to kill me."

Klaus had been staring at the empty canvas for over five minutes. Usually he had ideas popping all over his head, but this time had had nothing. He couldn't get the conversation he had, had with Katherine out of his head.

She had looked so angry, but also humiliated and Klaus had detected a bit of sadness. The different expressions on her face had seemed weird, the one that she usually wore was that of a coy smile.

Katherine would never admit it, but Klaus had hurt her. Bad.

Tatia, the name popped into his head almost unexpectedly. The last time she had thought of her had been in 1492 when he had meet Katherine and saw that she was her doppelganger. But even though Katherine and Tatia had the same physical resemblance they couldn't be more different.

Tatia had been sweeter though she had also been manipulative she had covered it up with fake sweetness while Katherine had the ability to be blunter, colder, and didn't really hide who she was through a wall of fake sweetness.

Ironically, Katherine and Klaus had more in common than Tatia and human Klaus ever did.

Tatia had been quieter, though Katherine couldn't seem to sit down for five seconds. Klaus dipped his paint brush in the dark paint. "She's a ball of energy that one." He murmured as he started drawing the beginning lines on the canvas.

He knew exactly what he was going to paint now. His Katerina.

Klaus stepped into Katherine's bedroom, the two of them hadn't spoken since this morning and Katherine had been too busy pouting and glaring at him to actually have a real conversation. Katherine was curled up on her bed, Klaus couldn't help but smile, even when she was sleeping she looked mad.

Klaus had decided to go out and look around the city, maybe buy her something to make up for being so insensitive earlier. Not that he would actually apologize. He had come to ask if she wanted to come along, but she was deeply sleeping.

Klaus pushed back a few stray curls from her forehead and kissed her forehead. Katherine squirmed a little bit, but didn't wake up. "I'll be back soon, love."

Something wet was touching her cheek.

Her eyes opened and she realized it was just Darla's wet snout touching her cheek. A smile spread on her lips, it seemed that the only one who deserves her smiles lately was the piglet. This was the reason that Katherine liked animals-they didn't judge you.

"Hey." She said as she picked her up. "At least someone is happy. Your Daddy is a jerk you know that."

Darla oinked.

Katherine stared at the clock-6PM. She was done moping, the house was too quiet, but that usually meant that Klaus was painting. She stood up and grabbed Darla and headed downstairs. It took Katherine a few minutes to realize that for the first time in weeks she was truly alone without Klaus breathing down her neck.

Katherine fought the urge to jump around in happiness. She was free, free!

Katherine put down Darla and grabbed her purse. It had been the first time she was truly alone and she was planning on enjoying it. She had never gone to this city before and she wanted to explore it. With or without Klaus.
