Chapter Twelve
ONE MONTH EARLIER
She was in the bathroom cleaning herself. She didn't like the idea of going out of town and leave her Kate alone, but she had to do it. They've been in this city for too long; it was time for them to get ready to move.
She got out of the bathroom and saw that her girl was awake. She's so beautiful… she never thought she'd be so lucky to have someone like her Kate.
"Hey there, sweetie. Are you okay?" She asked, while her girl opened her eyes and looked at her.
"Yeah… fine. Why are you up so early? It's Saturday…" Kate asked, sitting up slowly. She ran to her side to help her, while answered.
"I wanted to talk to you about something, my life. I was going to say it yesterday, but you were tired, so…" She answered, and then continued: "I have to go out of town for a few days, as of today, but don't worry, I bought everything you need, you have painkillers for the whole month, I bought food, everything… is that ok?"
"Yeah, sure" Kate answered.
"So I'm leaving right now… get some rest. Bye babe, never forget that I love you" she said.
"Good bye" was the reply she got. Just a 'good bye'. Never an 'I love you too'. But this would change, eventually. Kate would love her the way she loved Kate. And they would be together.
She was sitting in a restaurant in Seattle with a man named Paul. At least that was he told her; she doubted it was true. In his line of work, truthfulness wasn't exactly a good idea.
He was now looking intently at the pictures he held in his hand. One picture of herself and another of Kate.
"So, what do you want again?" he asked, eyeing her suspiciously.
"Two new IDs, passports, everything. One in the name of Alison Porter, which would be me" she said, pointing at her picture. "And another in the name of… Carolin Chambers-Porter. That would be her, of course"
"Hm, I see…" he looked again at the pictures and then back at her. "And she would be Alison's wife, am I right?"
"Yes"
"So I assume we're gonna need a wedding certificate also"
"You assume right"
He ran his hands through his beard.
"That wouldn't be easy to do. Nor cheap"
"I am aware of that" she said, handing him an envelope.
He looked inside the envelope and nodded. Then, he finished his drink.
"Consider it done. You know how to contact me"
He got up and left, leaving her with her thoughts. And the check.
"Asshole"
Fortunately, she had just one more thing to do.
NOW
She parked her car at a gas station and filled the tank. Then, she headed to the convenience store to buy some stuff. She didn't even know the name of this city she was in, she didn't care. The only important thing is that she was closer and closer to her final destination.
THE NIGHT BEFORE
Madalin was mad. Really mad. This was so out of control, this wasn't the way things were supposed to happen. But she was sure that Kate was starting to get suspicious and then that cellphone… fuck! Fucking Luke!
She finished grabbing all the things she needed and was about to go back to her car when she realized that she'd forgotten her purse. She went back to grab it and then got out.
When she arrived at the car, she froze. Then, she looked around frenetically, until she stopped and punched her car. Kate was nowhere to be seen.
"FUUUCK! Fuck damnit! I'll kill her! I'll find her and I'll kill her!"
She got in her car quickly and drove around for about 20 minutes hoping that she would find her Kate and that this would all be a misunderstanding and they could fix this shit. Because she loved her. They were meant to be together.
When she couldn't find her, she drove to the one possible place Kate could be in this damn town. She went to Luke's home.
But he wasn't there. At least his car wasn't. She walked around the house and tried the door. It was open. She chuckled. At least this was working.
She walked into the house and looked around; she was in the kitchen. She walked to the kitchen tabled and grabbed a knife. Better safe than sorry, right?
She easily found Luke's bedroom and started to comb through his things. Then, she found something; a drawing of the Capitol. She eyed it for a few seconds and then moved on.
Realizing that his computer was on, she decided to take a look at it. As soon as the screen lit up, she cursed. There it was, the warning from the FBI on Kate. Her Kate!
She was getting ready to leave when she heard a voice calling her.
"Who are you?"
She looked at the woman on the door. Luke's mother, probably.
"I'm a… Luke called me, asked to grab something for him" she said the first thing that popped to her mind.
Esther eyed the woman suspiciously. Of course she knew who that woman was; she'd read the file. That's why she didn't want to startle her, she could be dangerous.
"Why don't you get the hell out of my house?"
Madalin nodded and walked past her.
Esther sighed in relief. Then, she looked at the computer and also saw the warning on the screen. But her mind barely had time to register what she saw when she felt a sharp pain on her back and felt her mouth instantly fill with blood.
"I'm sorry, it's nothing personal" Madalin whispered, as she pulled the knife from her back and push it further again.
NOW
Madalin grabbed everything she needed and was counting the money when she heard something on the TV.
"… and the FBI have just released a press statement saying they found the missing FBI agent Jennifer Jareau. She was found almost ten months after she disappeared while working a case in Washington DC. The FBI also said that they are looking for Madalin Davis, anyone who sees this woman from the picture should call the number appearing on your screen."
The cashier handed her the change.
"Here's the change, Miss…?"
"Alison"
"Thank you for buying with us, Ms. Alison"
She walked out of the store and smiled.
They had no idea.
