Chapter 14
The Five

Buffy and Willow sat in the Grill, they had been in classes all day and had gone for food. Buffy had promised to fill Willow in on all the details since she had moved to Mystic Falls.

"I don't really know where to start." Buffy smiled at her friend.
"What's happening with you and Riley? Are you going to see him again?" Willow asked.
"I don't know, I really liked him when I thought he was this nice normal guy, but now...its different..." Buffy sighed.
"Isn't it a good thing he knows your secret and he kind of shares it."
"He's does it for a job though, for fun. If he stayed with me, it would be to dangerous, he'd end up hurt, and I don't want to lose anyone else." Buffy argued her point.
"Okay, so minus the boy drama, tell me about the vampire drama." Willow asked curious.
"Right vampires." Buffy sighed. "I kinda made friends with some vampires, there kinda good, i think." Buffy said trying to convince herself.
"Theres Elena, who was recently turned into a vampire she's having a hard time adjusting she dates another vampire Stefan who has a brother Damon, then there's Caroline also a vampire who dates a hybrid Tyler, and then there's Bonnie who's a witch, as far as i know they all drink from blood bags and have day light rings." Buffy spoke quickly.
"Okay that's a lot to take in, but first what do you mean by hybrid?" Willow asked.
"Right, you'll probarly find this intersting." Buffy raised her eyebrows.
"Ever heard of the original vampires?" Buffy asked.
"No." Willow was intrigued.
"The first ever vampires, all vampires come from them. They've been alive over a thousand years, there a family the mother was the original witch, it was her who cast the spell to turn them into vampires. There's Elijah, Klaus, Finn, Kol and Rebekah, i met them all here. They strong and nearly impossible to kill, there only weakness is a stake made from an old white oak tree, which doesn't exist anymore, there is a dagger that can be dipped into the white oak ash but it doesnt kill them only puts them into like a hibernating state. Anyway the second oldest Klaus he turned out to be half vampire half werewolf, with his blood he was able to turn other werewolves into a hybrid." Buffy finished trying to make it brief.
"A new breed, that's amazing." Willow looked shocked. "But not from your point of view i guess." Willow added.
"Right, a little harder to kill but i can manage." Buffy nodded.
"What about the originals, have you tried to take them down?" Willow asked.
"Yeah, but it got complicated we managed to take Finn down but when we did we found it kills the originals entire blood line, after that most of them left town, there's just Klaus and Rebekah left here. Klaus turns out to be the blood line of Elena, and the rest of them. It wasnt from lack of trying to get rid of him, things just got so complicated." Buffy finished.

Buffy had filled Willow in on most of the details about everything that had happened, she left a lot out about Klaus she trusted Willow and wanted to tell her, but she wasnt sure herself what she felt or what was going on. She was outside the Grill waiting for Stefan he had called her and wanted her to back him up on a trip over to Klaus's house, he figured he might be more inclined to tell them information about the new hunter if she was around, Buffy sighed she really wanted to avoid being around Klaus.

"Buffy." Rileys voice came from behind her, and she spun round to face him.
"What do you want Riley?" Buffy asked already fed up with this conversation.
"I just wanted to tell you i...this its stupid. No I mean you're stupid. I mean... I didn't mean that, know I think maybe I do." Riley spluttered out.
"Wow with sweet talk like that, you'll definitely melt my reservations."
"Im Serious, you have this twisted way of looking at things, this doom and gloom mentality, you keep thinking like that and things will probably turn out just the way you expect. Why can't we be?"
"Because ive tried it, okay? And everytime it just fell apart, and then i get sucked right back into the über evil." Buffy said frustrated.
"Welcome to the story of the world, things fall apart Buffy, and evil it comes and it goes, but the way people manage is they don't do it alone, they pull each other through, if you weren't so self involved you would see that."
"You have no idea what you're talking about, you barely know me." Buffy was getting angry, she didn't need this right now.
"Buffy please can we just start this over?" Riley pleaded with her.
"Riley no... I can't, and I don't want to. Please just leave this alone." Buffy nodded and walked away, making her way to the car park where Stefan was waiting for her.

Stefan didn't wait for an invite into Klaus's house, he made they way through and came to a stop in front of Klaus in his main living room. Buffy waited outside for a few moments giving Stefan a few minutes alone to see if Klaus was around and what kind of mood he was in. After five minutes Buffy took a deep breath and followed in Stefan's Path.

Buffy came to a step behind Stefan and looked up to see Klaus standing in front of him, he gave her his dashing smile.
"So whats with the home invasion?" Klaus asked.
"Damon said you know something about this guy, the five. Now I should have figured out that you were up to something when you healed Elena without asking for anything in return." Stefan spoke.
"I was feeling benevolent." Klaus said still smiling.
"You're never benevolent, who is this guy? Whats the five?" Stefan asked.
"So many questions." Klaus raised his eyebrows.
"Its a good thing i have nothing to do today." Stefan said taking a seat.
"Fine, the brotherhood of the five was a group of highly skilled vampire hunters, we crossed paths with them in the 12th century, in Italy. "
"So these hunters have been around for nine hundred years?" Buffy asked a little astonished.
"Apparently, though our friend in the other room is the first ive seen since then, kind of make you wonder what they've been up to all these years." Klaus smiled.
"What friend?" Buffy asked.
"He has Connor in the other room." Stefan answered her, and Buffy gave a Klaus a look .
"You were telling us about the hunters." Stefan chimed in again.
"Right, and my dear sister happened to fall in love with one, he told her all his secrets, which i will gladly share with you provided you do one thing for me." Klaus smiled.
"And whats that?" Stefan asked.
"Get Rebekah here, she being stubborn and hateful, I need to make peace with her, i want her to give up some very important information about the hunter which she wont do, unless she believes we've made up."
"And whats in it for me?" Stefan stood up.
"Just get her here and i'll tell you, Oh and Stefan trust me when i say this that hunter holds all the answers to your prayers." Klaus smiled again.

Stefan and Buffy soon returned with Rebekah and sat down at the dinner table with Klaus to discuss the hunters.

"I could kiss the Council for burning up all the vervain in town. They made my life so much easier. Rebekah, love, eat your veggies." Klaus said in all seriousness.
" I'm not eating until you apologize." Rebekah said stubbornly.
"For which indiscretion? There have been so many." Klaus laughed a little
"You broke my neck." Rebekah shouted getting angry.
"You threw away Elena's blood so I can't make any more hybrids."
"Because you took me for granted."
"That's what big brothers do, sweetheart!"
"Let me just name the million other people I'd rather be having dinner with right now." Stefan said bored and Buffy laughed with him.
"Alright, fine. I'm sorry. I often forget how delicate you are. Forgive me?" Klaus offered to his sister.
"I'll take it under consideration."
"Okay, good. Moving on, tell us about Rebekah's hunter?" Buffy asked.
"Right, Alexander. Nice chap foregoing the obvious issues. He claimed to have the greatest weapon in which no vampire could survive." Klaus answered.
"So this is about a weapon?" Buffy asked.
"Not just any weapon." Rebekah snapped.
"Rebekah, love, don't get ahead of the story." Klaus issued his warning.
"How is a weapon the answer to all my prayers?" Stefan rolled his eyes.

Rebekah and Klaus both looked at one another, obvious tension between them.
"Okay. Why don't we just skip with the theatrics and get right to the point?" Stefan said annoyed.
"Not quite yet, because in order to find this weapon, we need to solve the puzzle. Which seems to have disappeared." Klaus looked towards Rebekah.
"What puzzle? The tattoo. What is it?" Stefan asked.
"A map. Leading us to its treasure." Klaus said with entusium.
"Fat lot of good a tattoo's gonna do, if we can't see it." Rebekha grunted.
"We can't, but someone else can. Bring him in." Klaus motioned to a hybrid.

The hybrid walked back in to the room. He had Jeremy in his grasp. Stefan super speed out of his chair towards Jeremy. Klaus rushed past Stefan and stood between him and Jeremy, Buffy immediately stood up and prepared herself.

"Lucky for us, young Jeremy here, is a bit of an artist." Klaus smiled.
"I'm not helping you with anything." Jeremy Shouted.

The hybrid grabbed Jeremy's hand and took his ring off. He then tossed it to Klaus who caught it and held it up for Jeremy to see.

"Oh, I'm afraid you are." Klaus smiled back at him.

Klaus pushed Jeremy forward and the hybrid followed still with his tight grip on him, Buffy walked forward and stopped in front of Klaus.
"Let him go." Buffy warned.
"Dont worry Love, he's just here to help with the map, i promise no harm will come to him." Klaus promised her looking her straight in the eye, Buffy sighed she didn't trust him but she believed he wouldn't hurt Jeremy.

"So, tell us about this tattoo?" Stefan asked.
"My sisters suitor was unwilling to tell us anything. Rebekah however was more than willing to investigate, go ahead Rebekah tell them, tell them what the hunter told you the tattoo leads to, what is this great weapon that could bring about the end of all vampires." Klaus said in frustration.
"A cure. He said there was a cure." Rebekah sighed.
"There is no cure for vampirism." Stefan stated.
"Its the truth." Rebekah nodded.
"Then why would'nt you have searched for it, found it?" Stefan shouted.
"Because when the hunters drew their last breath that night, the marks disappeared from their body, the map was gone, the brotherhood of the Five extinct. For nine hundred years, there was not a whisper of another hunter, until our friend in there showed up in town." Klaus spoke calmly.
"Well, now we have the map, what do we do next?" Buffy asked.
"We don't do anything. You can't be trusted, little sister. You'll be blabbing this secret to the first boy who calls you pretty. I mean, its pathetic, really, isn't it? How she continues to hand her heart to any man who shows her a hint of affection. You'd think she would have learned by now from the endless cycle of disappointment and deception." Klaus started in on his sister.
"But, I haven't, instead I stayed with you and let you leech every moment of happiness from my life! You know, at least I fared better than Finn, Klaus left him daggered because he was tired of his judgment." Rebekah begin to shout at Klaus.
"No, Finn was a dullard. He was more interesting lying in a box." Klaus smiled.
"You want the cure for Elena, don't you? So you can go back to mass producing your hybrids. That's why you brought Stefan here, because you knew that he'd help you even though he hates your guts! You know what? You can shove your cure." Rebekah shouted at Klaus and with that she left the house.

"Well, I hope you got what you wanted out of her before you chased her off." Stefan sighed.
"She never would have told me what I needed to know. But she'll tell you." Klaus smiled.
"What do you need me to find out?"
"The map is useless without the tool to decipher it."
"The sword."
"She knows where it is. And you're gonna get her to tell you. You have a chance to save Elena from the very thing that is going to destroy her. You can call it a deal with the devil, if you like. But you know you won't walk away from it."

Buffy and Stefan had gone back to the Salvatore house and had been waiting on Rebekah to show up, Stefan had rung her and told her to come over so they could take about the cure.

"I got your message. I'm sorry. I know you wanted my help; he just makes me so angry." Rebeakh made her way towards them still looking frustrated.
" No one deserves to be treated that way." Buffy offered her a smile.
"I wanted it back then. The cure. I was willing to leave behind my family for it." Rebekah smiled back towards Buffy and then looked to Stefan.
"Would you take it if you had the chance? Or is it just for Elena?"
"A part of me wishes that she and I could have an eternity together. But Damon's right, there's not a single vampire who hasn't killed a human. Elena will kill and then there will be the pain, the guilt, and then…" Stefan trailed off.
"The humanity switch." Rebekah finished for him and Stefan nodded.
"But Elena, she's driven by love; by compassion. If she turns off her humanity, then I don't think we'll ever get her back. So, I'd do anything to save her."
"I envy that. You and Elena. I envy the love you have. I really did believe Alex when he said he loved me. He promised we'd be married. We even picked out a church. San Vittore in Brienno. I know you want my help, Stefan. But I just can't do anything that lets my brother get what he wants."

Rebekah turned and began to leave when Stefan spoke again.
"I never did answer your question."
"If it meant that I got to be with her, have children, grow old with her. If it meant that we'd die together, be buried together, then yes. I'd take the cure." Stefan spoke softly.
"I buried him. Even after everything. I laid him to rest in the place where we were to be married. What kind of hopeless fool does that? (Rebekah realizes what she said.) Oh, but that's what you wanted to know, isn't it? Because I buried him with his sword." Rebekah had begun to tear up now.

Klaus had then entered behind her, and made himself known."I'm sorry, little sister, but you're right."

Rebekah spun round to face her brother and saw he held a silver dagger and some white oak ash in his hand. Buffy had looked to Rebekah whose eyes had begun to fill with tears.

"You really are a hopeless fool." Klaus sounded like he was upset himself.

Klaus began to sip the dagger into the ash, and as he did Rebekah attempted to rush past him, but Stefan sped in front of her to stop her.

"Stefan, what are you doing?" Buffy shouted she was not happy with this plan, but Stefan ignored her and looked to Rebekah.

"I'm sorry, Rebekah."

Rebekah let the tears fall from her eyes and turned to face her brother feeling upset and betrayed.
"Go right ahead. Laugh at the girl who loved too easily. But I would rather have lived my life than yours, Nik. No one will ever sit around a table telling stories about a man who couldn't love. Do it. Look me in the eye and do it, you coward!"

Buffy looked to Klaus, not sure if he would go thorough with daggering her, he looked upset and avoided looking at both her and his sister.
"Do it!" Rebekah shouted at him.

Klaus then lent forward and daggered Rebekah, Buffy saw his eyes well up as she started to desiccate. For a moment she felt sorry for Klaus she could tell in his eyes he didn't want to hurt her, he looked pained, and Buffy couldnt understand why he had to do this to his family.

Stefan covered Rebekah's body, with a blanket as Klaus stood behind him, pulling himself together.

"I'll get the sword. My hybrids will keep an eye on Connor. You put Rebekah somewhere where no one will find her and make sure Jeremy forgets everything he heard today." Klaus barked his demands towards Stefan who nodded in return.
"I'll take care of it."
"No one must know about the cure, do you understand? Not Damon. Not Elena. Nobody. If this gets out, it could mean all our deaths. So, if you tell anyone, I'll erase each and every memory from the lot of you…" Klaus almost shouted at the both of them.
"I won't say anything." Stefan nodded and Klaus looked towards Buffy waiting for confirmation.

Buffy shook her head and looked at Klaus, how could he be so cold. His sister lay on the floor, she didn't understand how he could do this to his family and act like nothing was wrong. She was angry and wanted nothing more to so with this monster.
"I want nothing more to do with any of this." Buffy spat at Klaus and marched past him and out of the house.

Buffy was still so angry she made her way through the cemetery doing a quick patrol, maybe she could take her anger out on some vampire. She was in luck when she spotted a vampire lurking ahead of her, she approached slowly and sent a flying kick into the guys back sending him to the floor, the power rushing through her, she felt good.

""You know its none of my business but i just gotta ask..." Buffy stated when the vampire attacked her but she sent a backhand straight into his face making him stumble backwards.
"Did you smell this bad when you were alive?" Buffy asked mocking him.

He charged again, but she kicked him back into a headstone.
"Cause if it's a post mortem thing, then boy is my face red." Buffy laughed and pulled a stake from her boot, pushing the vampire backwards, he stumbled backwards over the headstone and Buffy rolled her eyes, this guy was not much of a fighter. She did a somersault over the headstone and raised her stake ready to strike, but the vampire seized her arm as she made her landing and he spun her round and plunged her own stake into her abdomen. Buffy's eyes went wide with shock and pain as she looked down at the stake protruding from her body. She looked up in time to see the vampire send her punch to her face sending her to the floor, Buffy yelped a little in pain and gripped the end of the stake pulling it out, she gasped in pain and looked down at her hands soaked in blood.

For the first time in a long time, Buffy felt fear. She turned and begin to flee, trying to escape the vampire. The hunter had become the hunted. Her wound was slowing her down, she cast a terrified glance over her , the vampire leapt in front of her and she stopped with a gasp, looking around desperately for an escape route.

"You're going? But you were having so much fun a minute ago!" The vampire mocked her this time.

Buffy brung the stake up but the creature easily knocked it from her grasp and tossed her against a nearby crypt. She doubled over in pain as the vampire picked up her stake and approached with a predatory grin. Buffy felt helpless. She realized that this is the moment she's been dreading but always knew would come. She's going to die.

As the vampire raised the stake for the killing blow, he's was suddenly tackled to the ground and Buffy could no longer fight the pain, everything turned to black.
