Arrest
Natalie placed the receiver on the desk as she tried to not to think about the man in the cells below the police station. She hated to think what would be going through Kate's mind.
"We have enough to charge him." Ronnie stated. "The interview should be a technicality. Let me and Matty in there for ten minutes."
"No. I'm going to interview him."
"Ok Guv. Who with?"
"You." Natalie stated. "I sent Sam to the hospital to tell Joe what's appening. Matt is too close to this. It's got to be dragging up memories."
"Not just for Matt. I can't help thinking about Alesha's attack. I still feel we failed the girl. We should have got a guilty verdict the first round." Ronnie watched as Natalie nodded.
"Right, are you sure you aren't going to start blaming yourself for the weather at this rate? We took Edith and her dog to her brother's. We have a suspect in the cells. Ron, we are getting somewhere."
"Sorry."
"Stop saying that!" Natalie snapped. Ronnie smirked before whispering 'sorry' just loud enough for her to hear. Natalie rolled her eyes as he sat down, ready to discuss the interview.

"What is it with those two?" Angie sighed as she shrugged on her jacket. The outer office of miu had been deserted apart from her and Matt for most of the evening. Now a man was in the cells it seemed that she would finally be able to go home.
"Who?" Matt looked up.
"Ronnie and the Guv."
"They've always been close." Matt smirked as Angie raised an eyebrow.
"No really? I hadn't noticed." Matt laughed at the sarcasm. "Just lately they seem different. I wonder if something has happened."
"No idea."
"You're his best friend."
"Yeah. So?" Angie shook her head.
"See you later." She laughed as Matt stared at the office, clearly clueless as to what had gone on.

"An arrest." Kate ran a hand over her face. Jake nodded once. The flat seemed smaller somehow, as if the news of the arrest had shrunk the world around him.
"Yeah. Freeman is in custody." Kate nodded, trying to comprehend the words. "Kate. Oh Kate." He pulled her into his arms as she shook. Tears of relief soaked his shirt as he let her cry, remembering Matt's advice to let her be as she was. He kissed her hair, whispering soothing nonsense until she finally settled in his arms.
"I'll have to go to court."
"Yeah. Unless he pleads guilty."
"Never gonna happen. Oh Jake." She shook her head. "I."
"I'll be with you. You know that. So will Alesha and Matt and the others. You aren't on your own. Not this time." Kate nodded before stepping onto her tiptoes to kiss his cheek. Jake froze for a moment as Kate sighed. Smiling Kate touched his cheek.
"I'm battered and bruised physically snd mentally but I am still me. He's not broken me and I won't let him." She paused, her forehead touching his. Jake closed his eyes.
"Unbreakable." He smiled. "You and me."
"Of course." Kate smiled. "After everything we've been through." Jake smiled back, holding her hand gently. She was right they had been through enough to end most couples. "I'll give evidence. His defence will rip me apart."
"They won't. Some snarky, po faced defence barrister can't stop you. I'll be there. So will James and Alesha. George will rip him to shreds. I only wish I could." Kate closed her eyes for a moment. She had the feeling her nightmare had only just begun.
