Arc: The Traveling
Days Given: 18 days
"Silverwing"
It took a whole day just for Hiccup and the other teenage vikings to gather their bearings. Hiccup decided that they should do some inventory check to see if some of their supplies or equipment went overboard last night.
Astrid, on the other hand, had other plans.
SLAM
"Oof! Hey, what was that for?! That hurts you know!" Snotlout grunted as Astrid slammed him against the wall. Ruffnut was there with them incase it got ugly.
They were currently below deck, out of prying eyes. Astrid and Ruffnut approached Snotlout as Hiccup finished his instructions. Astrid asked Snotlout to go with her below deck so they can a little bit of talk about their future. Snotlout wholeheartedly agreed, thinking that Astrid was finally starting seeing the true light. That he was, and always will be,better than Useless.
Without saying anything, Astrid grabbed Snotlout by the hem of his tunic and then punched him on the face so hard that blood was coming out from his nose.
"Hey!" Snotlout glared at her and had to spit out a tooth. "I'm warning you Astrid, just because I love you doesn't mean I'm going to pull punches." he warned threateningly, but they both knew that he was just bluffing. No matter how strong Snotlout thought he was, Astrid was a more experienced fighter and, whether he admitted it or not, was stronger than him.
Astrid still kept quiet as she calmly walked towards him. Astrid had enough of him. She has forgiven him for everything he had done. She even let him join their mission to help him make amends with Hiccup.
Enough was enough. She was going to make him regret for every setting foot on this ship.
Snotlout was about to try and talk his way out again when Astrid pulled out a dagger from her spiked skirt. His eyes widened at the revelation on what she was about to do to him. He backed away in fright, now fearing for his life. He knew he messed up big time but he never expected Astrid, of all people, would kill him for it.
"A-astrid?! W-what are you going to do with that?!" Snotlout stuttered as he continued backing away from the knife-wielding viking.
In a flash, Astrid slashed the dagger towards Snotlout's face. Snotlout was just quick enough to lean back a little so that the dagger was only able to slice him on the cheek. He fell down on his rear and yelped in pain.
"A-astrid! B-be careful with that! You almost hit my eye!" He squeaked as he starting crawling back in fright.
Astrid still had an impassive look on her face as she continued to advance on him.
Snotlout kept backing up until his back hit a wall where he just stared up in horror to the female he had a crush on. Correction, once had a crush on.
Astrid was already on top of him when she finally spoke. "You know Snotlout, this would be a lot easier if you stop moving. Permanently."
On any other day, Snotlout would probably think of this as a dream come true. Astrid on top of him with him pinned to the wall.
But this was no dream, with Astrid almost straddling him with a dagger pointed down at his chest, it was more like a nightmare coming true.
This was it. Was he actually going to die? On the hands of the girl she liked, no less.
Astrid was about to stab him when a hand grabbed her wrist and stopped her. Astrid didn't even object to it before she stood up and stalked away.
Snotlout released the breath he was holding as he looked up at his savior, Ruffnut.
"Hey, thanks..." Snotlout sighed as he shakily stood up. "I thought I was gonna die ba-" he was cut off as Ruffnut punched him on the face, and kick him on the gut making him fall once again. Ruffnut spat on his downed form before following Astrid's lead.
As Astrid climbed the stairs back to the deck, Hiccup was there leaning on the wall with his arms crossed, face impassive.
Astrid sighed as she approached her husband and stopped in front of him. "You know, I was surprised that you would let me do it."
Hiccup snorted as he pushed himself off the wall and stood next to her. "Well, I knew that the only way it would stick to his head that you were not interested in him was for you to show him that you are serious."
Astrid laughed bitterly as she took hold of his hand, the right one, and started pulling him up the stairs with her. Sometimes she wondered what would her life would be without Hiccup.
Astrid didn't have to say anything as Hiccup already understood what Astrid was going through, and not just because her hand was shaking violently. She almost killed another person, let alone one of theirs. It didn't matter whether she hated Snotlout or not, it was the fact that she knew him since they were children. Killing a viking from another village? She could take. Killing a viking, no matter how rude or obnoxious they were, from her own village? That was a different story.
Hiccup decided that Astrid should probably rest in bed for the remainder of day. It didn't matter to him that she hadn't done any of the chores he instructed her earlier, all he wanted was for her to be back to her former self again.
His musings were cut short as Fishlegs approached them. "Hiccup, I have good news." Fishlegs smiled as he shuffled through his notes. "As if of some miracle, we didn't lose any of our food supplies last night. I know we should be grateful but that seems impossible."
Hiccup laughed at Fishleg's face of confusion. "Impossible or not, I'm just glad that we can relax knowing that we still have enough food to last us for months. In fact, let's celebrate tonight! It's been awhile since we just laid back and have fun, don't you agree?"
Fishlegs just saluted before he went his way to check on the other supplies.
As Hiccup and Astrid arrived back to their room, Hiccup could just make out some clattering sounds inside. Hiccup furrowed before he looked back to Astrid and they both shared confused looks. Just then, the sound of glass shattering made both of them jumped.
"Stand back Astrid, I'll take a look inside." Hiccup said as he positioned her behind him, and he slowly opened the door. When he peered inside, he noticed that the room was left untouched, except for Astrid's viewing glass, broken, on the floor. Hiccup motioned for Astrid to stay put while he went inside and closed the door behind him.
"Who"
Hiccup snapped his neck to the side, dagger on the ready, but found no one.
"Who"
Hiccup jumped back as the sound came from behind him this time.
"Show yourself." Hiccup said in a determined voice as he tried to look cautiously around the room. Fluttering could be heard but Hiccup couldn't determine where it came from. Suddenly, Hiccup felt some weight on his shoulder. He stiffened as he slowly turned his eyes towards the new weight on his left shoulder, only to blink in surprise when he saw a silver bird-like creature with huge dewy eyes and a yellow beak.
"Who" it said in the same tone the voice Hiccup heard earlier.
"What the-" Hiccup didn't even know how to react to this... thing...
"Uhh... Astrid? You might want to see this"
"What is it?" Astrid's muffled voice could be heard just outside.
"Just. Just come in. I don't think I can explain this even if I tried."
It scooted closer to Hiccup's face and then rubbed it's little head on his cheek, making cooing noises. The bird-like creature was as big as his fist.
Astrid opened the door slowly and peered her head inside, trying to see what Hiccup was talking about. When she saw the little creature on Hiccup's shoulder though, her eyes widened, she threw caution out the window and rushed towards Hiccup.
"Awww..." Astrid cooed as she held a finger in front of it. "Are you just the cutest little thing!" When the bird nipped her finger, Astrid squealed and held her hand out where the bird hopped on to. Hiccup just blinked at the display and got even more confused. What the hell just happened?
"Hiccup, where did this little guy came from?" She asked as she patted the bird on the head, which made it close its eyes in bliss. "Did he stow away in our ship this morning?"
Hiccup furrowed his eyebrows at this. "I don't know Astrid. The door was closed the whole time and I don't think there are any holes here that it can fit in through."
"He, Hiccup" Astrid corrected firmly. "He's not an it. He's a he."
Hiccup just raised an eyebrow at her. "Does it really matter?"
Astrid glared at him before slapping a hand on his arm. "Jerk." she muttered before sitting down on their bed and looked at the bird all over.
"Hey! That hurts!" Hiccup whined as he looked around, trying to find an explanation in where it... he came from. When he saw the cracked remains of the egg he took from the island full of giant birds, his eyes widened even more when he snapped his neck back to the little bird on Astrid's arm.
"Astrid, remember the egg I took from the island?" When Astrid nodded at him he continued. "Cause I think that bird came from it."
Astrid's eyes widened in realization, looking back at the little fluff that was trying to curl itself on her neck. "Wait, are you telling me that this cute little thing will grow into one of those huge giant carnivorous birds?!" she asked in astonishment before a smile broke on her face. "Awesome! You are going to look so cool when you grow up!" she said as she rubbed it's head.
Hiccup just rolled his eyes as he sat next to Astrid and wrapped an arm around her waist. "Yeah, that sounds good and all but aren't you afraid of him eating us?"
Astrid scoffed as she leaned against Hiccup's chest with the little bird hopping back to Hiccup's shoulder and rubbing it's little face on his cheek again. "Unless we train him to only eat fish."
"You do have a good point."
Astrid smiled playfully as she took his other arm and wrapped it round her. "I'm your wife, I'm supposed to be always right"
Hiccup couldn't help but agree to that. He then turned his head as he looked at the little bird. "So, what are we going to call you?"
Astrid also looked at the bird and now noticed it's silver wings.
Then a thought struck her.
"Hey, how about Silverwing?" The bird chirped happily at that and fluttered his wings in confirmation.
Hiccup smiled at 'Silverwing' and rubbed his head. "You like that, little guy? Then it's official, from now on, you shall be called Silverwing."
