Deesh seemed to have a rather unusual calm about her during combat, even when she roared like a beast to lure opponents toward her. She blocked the shield of the Revenant with her sword and held its blade back with her shield. This had left the spirit open for an attack by Sten who sliced the corpse in two.
With the last of the corpses cleared out of the chapel it would seem that the first floor was secured. When everything was finished, Neria pointed her staff at Deesh, "What are you?"
Deesh slowly turned to the elven woman, "You better be prepared to use that, child…"
"And I ask you a question. What are you?"
"Neria!"
Wynne tried to stop her, but then Theron gently stopped the elder mage. "She has to trust her, otherwise we might not be able to get through the higher floors as effortlessly."
"So you noticed when I threw an extra fireball along with yours. You think you're clever."
Neria pointed to Morrigan, "I know she is an apostate just by her ragged dress and unusual spells. You, not only were you capable of completing an incantation without the notice of the others you wield a sword and burden yourself in heavy armor. Are you here to help, or something the templars have been secretly training to kill us?"
Deesh finally let her tail drop below her cloak, startling the three mages, "Now," pulling back a bit of her hood to reveal her muzzle, "why would humans allow such a 'monster' amid their ranks? Even if I was a 'pet project' they wouldn't allow such a tool to go around so vagrantly without a handler or three. And this isn't heavy armor, heavy as it may look." Deesh could see the shock in Neria's eyes. Deesh grabbed the staff, "Will we continue to have any more trouble or would you rather discuss this dispute in a more brutish fashion?"
Neria lowered her grip on the staff, something that Deesh could feel as she released it. Daylen looked to Wynne, "I know Neria is an adept mage, but she was pushing it just now."
"Only a little," Kallian smirked. "She may not look pretty, but she is willing to help. Usually." Deesh had already fixed her hood and hid her tail once more, moving up the stairs without them.
Sanguine smiled, though he wasn't all that happy, "It seems this little spitfire just fizzled out."
"It's always the quiet ones you gotta watch out for. They stay all bottled up and then…BAM! Explosions and gravy everywhere!"
"She's certainly smarter than most mortals. Is this why you wanted our little champion to come to this world Mora? Skewer a mage or two and brain drain their knowledge?"
"Only when knowledge is passed by word of mouth do I need to gather information through that crud method. There are more than enough books here that can sate my needs, for now."
Sheogorath started to shush them, "Quiet, quiet! They just killed seven blood mages, a ton of skeletons and armful of demons. I hope they find another chicken for the stony one to squash."
Deesh eventually found the stairs to the next floor, though she stopped at a door nearby. Just as she was about to open, Neria stopped her. "That's First Enchanter Irving's quarters! What are you doing?"
Deesh turned to the stairs, "If you believe nothing of value has been taken, then by all means let us continue on and slaughter the rest of your fellow corrupt mages and possessed templars."
While the rest of the group continued on up the stairs, Morrigan managed to get Theron to sneak into the First Enchanter's quarters. "Now, let us see if we can find mother's grimoire."
Theron looked back to the door, "What should we say when we get up there and the others notice we're missing?"
Morrigan rubbed her hand against Theron's face, "Then let us say that mayhaps we simply wished for some alone time, just the two of us…" she leaned in as though she was going to kiss him, but quickly pulled away. "Though none of that will matter if we cannot find the grimoire."
They carefully went through the room, going through the shelves and desk. Theron found an unusual painted box that didn't seem to belong in a circle tower. As he took a closer look at the small box, he caught a glimpse of a chest stashed away in a corner. There didn't seem to be any sort of trick mechanism, lock or magic seal that Theron could tell, slowly opening the chest to take a look.
Inside was a black leather book with the emblem of a tree on it. This tree however reminded Theron of some of the symbols he had seen used to represent the Elven god Mythal. He turned around with the book in hand, "Morrigan…"
"What?" She nearly dropped the book she was holding when she saw it, "You found Flemeth's grimoire?" She was hesitant to take it from Theron, "When I spoke of it to you, I did not truly hope…ah, but this is most fortuitous event!" Morrigan finally managed to gather the strength to grab it, feel it, and now open it, "You have my thanks. I will begin study of the tome immediately."
"What? Don't I even get a kiss?" Theron jokingly denoted.
Morrigan closed the book, stashing it away in her bag, "Oh, I don't know," walking up to him again, "That seems like a steep reward to ask for."
"I think I deserve it."
"You could be right. Let us test the theory." Morrigan gently guided Theron closer to her until their lips locked. It was a passionate few seconds, though just as it started Morrigan ended it, "There. Compensation requested and provided. I do not intend to squander this opportunity to learn more than Flemeth wished me to know. This should be…interesting."
A knock came to the door, then Deesh poked inside. "I thought I might find you two here. Hurry along, we're already made progress through the next floor. And don't assume I'm oblivious to what you two were up to." She just shook her head, "Mammals. Can't you two think of a better time to get aroused, like back at camp?"
Theron wasn't sure if she was toy with them or if that's all she suspected, "R-right… So shall we continue?"
Deesh wasn't a fool, she knew Morrigan undoubtedly used Theron to help her search for a magical artifact of some kind. The only question remained was what it did, and if she should be concerned about it.
She walked back through the hall where they just slayed the reanimated corpses. The others had continued on ahead after Deesh went back to find Morrigan and Theron. The next room had quite a few dead abominations and a trail of ashes on the floor, left by one of the fire demons probably.
It didn't take long to find the others as they finished up a group of templars being manipulated by a demon. Alistair turned to her, "So, you're going to tell us you had a charm or spell that could have broken the hold the demon had over these men?"
"I don't. Even if I had, would you have believed or trusted me?" Deesh stopped herself, turning to the door leading to the central chamber. "Three of those Tranquil creatures are inside, surrounded by demons."
Daylen was about to charge in, "Well what are we waiting for?"
Deesh managed to keep the door closed for now. "Because at this moment they don't seem to be in any immediate danger." She leaned onto the floor to look through the crack between the door and the floor, "There's a mess in there, but from what I can see they are being held in place by a spell. We rush in, we might get them killed."
Wynne didn't want to leave more people dead then need. "What do you propose we do to save them?"
Morrigan had a thought, "We let our unique companion go in first, kill the hostile spell caster and we finish the rest."
Deesh continue to smell the air. "That might not be so easy. This spell caster seems to be one of those mangled abominations." Deesh turned to Wynne, "The tower here wouldn't happen to have knowledge or use invisibility spell by chance?" Just by the look on Wynne's face gave Deesh her answer, "Thought not…" She turned to Morrigan, "How verse are you in casting spells in one of your bestial forms?"
"It would be difficult, but it may be possible for me to cast a spell immediately after changing back. Why do you ask?"
"It's a bit risky, but I'd rather have two of us in there than just me."
The abomination had been preparing these Tranquil to finally have some use in their meaningless existence. The door slowly creaked open and his skeleton warriors prepared for the intruder. The intruder as it turned out to simply be a lost cat wandering about.
The cat managed to avoid the skeleton, climbing onto a bookcase, away from the monsters. The abomination returned to his casting, getting the first Tranquil ready for the transformation. Before the incantation could be finished he was stopped in mid movement. There was nothing physically holding him back, he was trapped in a paralysis spell. Before the spell's charm could wear off two blades ran clear through the abomination's chest before the head was swiftly decapitated.
The one who killed the abomination slowly reappeared, standing over the corpse as if the room was cleared. The skeletons prepared to attack the unmoving target, however it was they who were about to be finished.
Three arrows found their mark in one of the skeletons, the first hit the shoulder, disarming it as the second and third aimed for the neck and skull respectfully. Three magic bolts from the door and one from above disintegrated the second skeleton. The intruder turned, blocking the sword with a shield just as a stone golem came from behind, crushing the walking pile of bones with a mighty crash.
The spell binding the three Tranquil was broken, slowly leaving the pedestal as though nothing had happened. "Senior Enchanter," greeting Wynne as she approached them, "We were not expecting anyone to still be on this floor."
"The path down stairs is clear. Owain is at the stockroom on the second floor." Calmly the three Tranquil moved toward the stairs, leaving them to continue on to the fourth floor.
Continuing to the fourth floor the decorum continue to be festered with grotesque flesh covering the walls and statues. "Ugh…I'm going to have nightmares after this…"
Deesh didn't seem fazed though she was invited to a dining cave full of cannibals back in Skyrim, of whom she promptly slaughtered when she delivered the 'main course'. Deesh did look around the store houses for any extra supplies they could be used. When the group continued down the hall they heard a woman and a man talking about children, though peering inside it was revealed to be nothing more than a demon's lies to a templar.
The demonic temptress caressed the face of the templar, "Everything is just as you wanted, my knight. Our love and our family is more than you hoped for."
Deesh was more than willing to let this all slid, however Neria and Daylen could not. "What in Andraste's name is going on here?"
"I'd say this demon was ready to possess him."
"Do you hear something, love?" The templar seemed to be oblivious to everything but the illusion the demon created for him.
"It is nothing, my darling. Just the door. I will get it. The children have finished supper. Tuck them into bed while I see who it is."
"Don't be too long, the children will want to kiss you goodnight."
"I will be but a moment, my pet."
Shale could only find humor at the scene, "Oh, how precious."
The temptress now had her full attention on them, "You are intruding upon a loving, intimate moment and I dislike disruptions."
Kallian seemed just as disgusted as Neria and Daylen, "There's nothing loving or intimate going on here."
The demon started to pet her templar 'companion', "I have given him what he always wanted. Where is the harm in that?"
Kallian yelled, "His happiness is an illusion, a cruel lie."
"All emotion is intangible. You cannot see it, cannot grasp it," clenching her fist in the air to emphasis.
Wynne couldn't agree with her, "But it is normally caused by something real—real events, real people. What you've done to him is…is abhorrent."
To which the demon moved behind her 'love', stroking his back, "I saw his loneliness and longing for a family that loved him."
"And used them to enslave the fool! And he accepts it willingly?!" Shale seemed stupefied by the stupidity of this human.
Deesh understood the relationship now. "So you are a parasite, leeching onto him as an anchor while draining his lifeforce. Quite an unusual predator…"
Morrigan seemed to find some humor in this, "Apparently you can get your desire and still suffer horribly. 'Tis truly a lesson for all who consider marriage." Theron didn't seem sure if those were her true feelings on the matter or just Morrigan being spiteful about most things.
Alistair just seemed confused by the illusion, "A family where the wife and children are in reality the same person…thing. That there…that defines creepy."
Wynne was still disgusted by this monster, "How long will you keep him in this stupor? Will he know it when his body fails and death claims him?"
The demon was quick to counter her, "A short, blissful existence is preferable to an interminable one of misery. No one else would have known his heart. He did not know it himself," carefully leaning her fiery head against him as she wrapped her arms around his chest.
Neria shouted, "You've made him into your slave!"
"I fulfill his dreams…I grant him all his desires. Is he my slave, or am I his? We are partners. I give him what no one else can, and through him, I experience what it is to be mortal."
Theron was about to say something to Kallian, but then Neria shouted back, "He deserves to be free from you, to find his own happiness."
Just as she was about to raise her staff to attack Sten stopped her. "Freedom cannot be given. The templar must choose it for himself."
Neria tried to convince the Qunari otherwise, "He's not going to find it with her hanging over him."
"If you help this man, what does he learn? Nothing."
"I have to agree with Sten," Deesh turned away, "This is a cage made by his deepest wishes he denied himself." She glanced to the demon, "However, I doubt she would be so willing to part with such a vessel. Or rather she could not, even if she wanted…"
"Rather observant, for one not of these realms…" the demon could see she was not speaking with simply another follower of Andraste, and she could see Deesh's true desires as well. Yet as tempting as Deesh's desires were, she could not fulfil them, not enough to create such an elaborate illusion as on the templar. The demon carefully held the templar's head, "Our thoughts and spirits are melded. If one perishes, so does the other. Though much of my strength is spent maintaining this link, I am his wife, and his children, he will defend me to the death if need be. I want nothing from you. I have what I need. All I ask is that you leave us alone."
Daylen pointed out, "The templars will hunt you down, and they won't stop until you're dead."
She seemed fully aware of the consequences should the templars find out about this, "Perhaps we will escape. Perhaps we will not."
Many were ready to raise their arms to attack, though Deesh, Morrigan and Sten did not. "Tell me, is killing this man to remove this demon truly worth it?"
Kallian seemed confused by her question. "But he can't be freed without someone's help…"
"As Sten said, this is a cage developed from his own devices. If we aid him from it, he learns nothing. And if we attack now, we kill them both. Can you truly say that is saving him?" Deesh could see the resolve behind most of their companions slowly dwindling.
However Wynne and Neria weren't faltering. "We let them leave, then the demon will be free to find a new host and start this unholy cycle all over again."
"So to ensure everyone's safety, we must kill the templar? Perhaps the demon isn't doing this for the templar. Perhaps the demon has set this up for the mages."
"What are you talking about?"
Deesh was holding out a copy of Brother Genitivi's books, In Pursuit of Knowledge: The Travels of a Chantry Scholar. She opened it up, "Very good read. The Harrowing; a test all mages must undergo to become a full member of the Circle of Magi. An apprentice mage may opt out of this mystery test to become a Tranquil. Rumors abound, but from what I've seen of the templars they might as well be true, they kill any apprentice who fails this test. How many mages are slain following this practices? To have one of these men caught up in a fantasy world where even helping this man ends with his death, why do such a thing when there were mages that would be far more susceptible and suitable hosts? She wins either way."
Neria didn't seem like she wanted to admit it, but everything Deesh was saying made an unusual amount of sense. "So, what do you suggest we do?"
Deesh looked to the demon, "For now, we let them go. No promises on if we meet again. If you so desire, hunt this demon down later, but we do have greater concerns."
The demon bowed to Deesh, "You have my thanks, if that means anything to you. You will not see us again." She caressed her templar, "Come my pet, we are going for a walk. The children want you to show them all the stars in the night sky."
The demon and templar disappeared in a cloud of smoke leaving no trace of their presence. Deesh turned away, "Let us continue with the task at hand. We've been distracted enough as is."
A/N: Deesh really didn't care if the templar lived or died, she knows the more pressing matter at hand.
