"Isabella...why...what did they do to you?"

"They opened my eyes."

My eyes snapped open and I slapped her hand away. I scrambled to my feet and ran.

"Oh? Where are you going, big sister?" The voice echoed around me. I couldn't think. The only thing I could do was run. I was running as fast as I could, but I tripped over something and fell to the ground. I looked back frantically to see what it was.

It was Edward.

His body wasn't moving and he was covered all over in dirt and blood, but I heard shallow breathing. I froze again, staring at him. I suddenly remembered the piece of metal in my hand. A shock went through my body.

"Whoever did this."

The words rang in my head. The promise. But I could never hurt Isabella.

"Hm? I thought this is what you wanted, for all these stupid alchemist to suffer. Remember, the promise you broke? Us against the world?"

Another promise.

How many of these promises was I going to break?

~Flashback~

"Mom! Dad!" I shouted. They turned around and smiled.

"Sarah, what is it?" my dad asked. I ran up to my parents and held up a small cake, smiling.

"Isabella and I made it for you! Isn't it pretty?" I asked them happily. Isabella ran up to me.

"Big sis! You said I could show them it!" She said. I laughed and gave my dad the cake.

"Alright, I'll make it up to you. Watch this!" I said excitedly and drew a transmutation circle on the ground. I pressed my hand s down on it and some sparks flew as I made a tiny doll. I picked it up and handed it to Isabella smiling.

"Do you like it?" I asked her. She stared wide-eyed at the toy.

"I LOVE IT!" She exclaimed and tackled me to the ground in a hug. "I'M GONNA KEEP IT FOREVER!"

I laughed. "You better!"

My parents looked down at us smiling. But the smile wouldn't last.

~A month later~

Rain poured down from the sky, landing in a puddles all around the two tombstone that Isabella and I stood over. Isabella was crying into my shirt, but I stood there motionless, a shadow over my eyes as I read the tombstones of my parents. I didn't get very far because my eyes were overflowing with tears. I remembered the night that it happened...the death of my parents...caused by those awful, horrible, terrible alchemist. They robbed us of everything precious to us and even my parent's lives when they tried to protect us. Something was growing inside me.

Hatred.

Hatred for those thieves, using my favorite thing in the world to kill the ones I loved. Rage consumed me and I punched the tombstone, barely noticing the blood dripping down my clenched fist. Isabella flinched and took a step back. I stood there, catching my breath, and then finally pulled my fist away.

"Isabella..." I said. She stepped toward me cautiously.

"Yes, big sis?" She said.

"...promise... I promise those people will suffer for taking mom and dad away...I promise on my life that they will suffer like we did...and I will never let any stupid alchemist hurt you too."

~Flashback ends~

I collapsed on the ground. I had broke my promise to Isabella. The promise I had staked my life on. The only thing that was...no...had kept me go on living in this world. I closed my eyes.

Well...I guess it was a good life...I thought to myself. I was ready.

Ready to die.

I laid there as I heard Isabella's footsteps coming closer. Suddenly, I stood up.

What am I doing? I was going to die...

My body started to move on its own. It turned around and I was staring right at Edward's barely alive body on the ground. My eyes glazed over him.

Why is my body moving? Why is it making me look at something I don't want to?

I heard Isabella coming closer, but it sounded so distant. The only thing I could think of is Edward. He was here, right in front of me. He was alive. Suddenly something in my head clicked. All of the pieces fell together.

Oh...my body is moving...because he's alive...Edward's alive...I'm moving because I have to protect him...

Images filled my head. On the train where he was sitting on the bench with me. In the hospital when he was looking at with so much concern in his eyes. In Izumi's house as we sat around the table. In Roy's office when he was laughing at my disguise. Him walking into my room when I was changing. Him asking about my auto-mail. All of this filled my head so fast I felt it was going to explode. My feet started to move. I clenched the piece of metal so hard it drew blood. I turned to face Isabella, my sister...the sister I loved so much.

I have to chose...Edward or Isabella...and I can't break another promise.

My eyes snapped open and I charged at Isabella. She looked shocked that I was attacking her, which slowed her attack down. I clapped my hands and skimmed them on the ground as I charged at Isabella, a gigantic sword forming in my hands. I blocked her attack and thrust my sword at her. It plunged straight through her heart. Her eyes were wide with shock and she looked down at the sword lounged in her chest. She looked back up at me.

"But...you're too weak to attack me...you would never hurt me...Father told me...why did you attack me?" She questioned.

"Because..." I grit my teeth and tighten my grip on the sword.

"...because no matter how much you avoid it, and how much you hate it, there are things and people you can only protect by letting go of the past and moving on."
