This is inspired by the song: When I was Your Man- Bruno Mars
Klaus took a deep breath.
Another deep breath.
Another…
Another…
Then, he slowly turned the door handle and opened the doors— the double doors mind you— and took in the sight before him.
Everyone was here, even his own family and his already broken heart just re-shattered in his chest and turned to dust before it hit the bottom of his stomach.
He was standing there, in the Lockwood Mansion, and it was the absolute last place he wanted to be in right now.
He would like to take off the constricting suit and shoes, put on a sweatpants or no pants and go into bed. He wanted to hide away from the world and never return. He wanted to die in bed in hopes of his never ending pain to finally do have an end.
But alas, she wanted him to suffer.
And he should. Rightfully so.
He broke her heart. He was impulsive and he regretted it the moment it ended. Not a second later.
He broke her heart and in response, she broke his by breaking up with him. He saw it coming, he really did but he had every right to be a little baffled by the entire scene in front of his eyes that day.
Her eyes were red, her entire body screamed frustration, anger, pain and tiredness. Her mascara was running down her cheek, her lipstick was slightly smudged and her hair was a total mess, but she still looked stunning in his eyes.
He told her it was a mistake.
He told her that he wasn't thinking.
He apologized to her countless times.
She wasn't having it because in both of their eyes, he had done the worst thing he could have done to her. She was right, if she had done the same to him, death would have been less painful.
He remembered her last words to him before she left through those giant double doors of his and out of his life. Since then…well…let's just say that he hit rock bottom.
Hard.
Five years later, he finally show his face to the many people in town all to attend the one event he NEVER wished to attend in his entire life.
Her engagement party.
There were countless arguments about his presence at the event with his family that ultimately led him here.
"Niklaus, she wants you there. If you love her, you can be there for her. No matter what"- Elijah
He growled at Elijah in response and returned to his safe haven of his bed.
"Nik, come on. Stop being such a baby and get up. You should be practicing. Don't screw this up for her"- Rebekah
He glared at Rebekah and she merely huffed and walked out the room like she won the war. He would have smirked or smiled at her strength but he was far too depressed to try.
"Nik stop being such a sourpuss. She has an open bar there so you can drink all you want before your performance and after. Maybe we can find you a pick-me-up there too"- Kol
If he wasn't so…well…sad he would have smirked at his words or scold him for being so childish but he wasn't having anyone's words about the subject.
"Niklaus, I know it hurts. It hurts so much and now you're either wondering what to do with your life now that she's gone or you're still in shock after so much years of the breakup but you need to put aside your anger and sadness for her. If you ever loved her or if you still love her…do this to make her happy."- Esther
He didn't have the energy to respond to his mother because she was as closest to the truth than any of his siblings. There were days he wondered what he should do now that she was gone. Should he keep playing and hope for love to find him again? Should he fight for her until his last dying breath? Does she want him to fight for him? Obviously not if she's getting married.
To a Lockwood no less.
At one point, he had decided that he didn't want to go, they can't make him go and he couldn't care less.
But his mother's words stuck like super glue to his ears.
"Do this to make her happy"
And he sighed because he knew…in the end…he'd do ANYTHING to make her happy. Regardless of whether she was in his life or not.
So he cleaned himself up and gathered the song that was chosen by the groom.
When I was your man- Bruno Mars.
Usually, he always had a problem with modern music and it's tasteless lyrics but this song was unique. The lyrics and the melody was amazing for a modern song. It was like a breath of fresh air from the music he usually listens to…meaning old music.
He sat on his piano and for days…he played the song. He never how much it related to him until just after his second try at playing the melody.
His mother had walked in on him playing the melody and applauded him on how well he played it. It was no surprise. His mother was proud of his profession as a famous and well known pianist. She knew how much he loved art…in every form. Music is what he did for a living. Painting was a hobby for him.
Now as he walked in the large home and took in all the shocked faces and some even pleased faces at his presence. He just hoped he didn't have to see her.
It was stupid of him to think so, considering this was her engagement party but he had every right to dream.
He greeted his mother with a hug who thanked him for coming, his siblings gave him sad sympathetic smiles that he didn't want. He never wanted their pity before and he did not want it now.
His friend Stefan waved at him and he nodded in his direction and he headed straight to the open bar for a start on the drinking he was promised by Kol.
It was almost the end of the party. It was time for him to play the melody as the couple dance to celebrate their engagement and as if fate was on his side tonight…he neither had to speak to Tyler nor Caroline since his arrival. He didn't bother to question it…he was just grateful.
When Tyler called him…even had the ball— yes the balls— to call him friend to come play the song they chose— he chose— and that's when he saw from the corner of his eyes that Caroline had finally rest her eyes on him.
What he saw however did confuse him.
He was something that oddly resembled the look he gave the mirror in his private bathroom where there is currently a picture of them together on his bed. That look of longing…
He sat in front of the piano that sat in the middle of the floor and introduced himself. He thanked Tyler and Caroline for inviting him here even though in his mind he wanted to choke Tyler for inviting him.
He wished them a happy engagement and a wonderful married life but if anyone knew him well, very well, then they'd knew he was lying through his teeth.
His fingers hit the keys and the melody flowed through the entire mansion like a gust of wind hitting everyone to their core.
Never in that moment did it occur to him how much the song had touched Caroline.
Same bed but it feels just a little bit bigger now
Our song on the radio but it don't sound the same
When our friends talk about you, all it does is just tear me down
'Cause my heart breaks a little when I hear your name
Those lyrics really did hit him harder than it should have or it did because the hidden passion behind his fingers was currently in the room dancing with another man.
It all just sounds like oooooh…
Mmm, too young, too dumb to realize
That I should've bought you flowers
And held your hand
Should've gave you all my hours
When I had the chance
Take you to every party
'Cause all you wanted to do was dance
Now my baby's dancing
But she's dancing with another man
It was like the guy who sang this song knew what was going to happen between him and Caroline and wrote it just for them.
Well not completely accurate.
For one thing, he always brought her flowers. In fact, she always yelled at him when he bought flowers for her. He was accused of buying too much. Yes he littered his entire living room area with flowers so she'd come home to a surprise and he'd do it again in less than a heartbeat.
He never initiated holding her hands. She always did and he went with it. It was one of his regrets in that very moment. Willingly holding her hand just to feel her.
He remembered when his mother playfully accused her of being a distraction in his life because he had stopped playing piano almost altogether. He did it in the comfort of his home but rarely for a profit. He gave her most of his time and he'd do it again if he ever had the chance.
Caroline is a dancer. Professionally. She's well taught in all styles but she makes her income through ballet. He always loved watching her dance. She always reminded him of a swan. Graceful, Elegant, Beautiful.
He never really went to parties. He'd much rather stay home and curl up with her but she loved to party and she loved to dance. Tyler seemed like the kind of guy to party till the world ends. Another thing he's beginning to regret.
Now she's dancing with another man.
He wouldn't really know because his eyes are closed but his main reason for being here was to basically play music for them to dance to.
My pride, my ego, my needs, and my selfish ways It all just sounds like oooooh…
Caused a good strong woman like you to walk out my life
Now I never, never get to clean up the mess I made, ohh…
And it haunts me every time I close my eyes
Mmm, too young, too dumb to realize
That I should've bought you flowers
And held your hand
Should've gave you all my hours
When I had the chance
Take you to every party
'Cause all you wanted to do was dance
Now my baby's dancing
But she's dancing with another man
His pride and his ego was the reason he and Caroline hot into an argument which resulted in the impulsive act of sleeping with another woman out of anger.
One of the women in his past Caroline hates of them all no less.
Genevieve
Although it hurts
I'll be the first to say that I was wrong
Oh, I know I'm probably much too late
To try and apologize for my mistakes
But I just want you to know
He had realized during his drive here that if he really did love her. Regardless of whether she was with him or not…he wants her to be happy. If she found that happiness in someone else…then he'll be happy for her.
He seriously hoped that Tyler can truly keep her happy for the rest of his life as he had promised himself so many times.
I hope he buys you flowers
I hope he holds your hand
Give you all his hours
When he has the chance
Take you to every party
'Cause I remember how much you loved to dance
Do all the things I should have done
When I was your man
Do all the things I should have done
When I was your man
He wondered if Tyler had done the things he regrets not doing for her and the things he has done. She deserves them all and then some.
When he was done. He was expecting applause. Every time he played he received them. However when he opened his eyes…no one was dancing. Everyone was standing around him…staring at him as he played.
His mother and sister was in tears. Silly women.
Stefan had that pity look on his face that he hated.
When he got up and turned around to thank everyone…he was not expecting Caroline's watering eyes staring at him.
"Thank you, everyone…really" he said to everyone as he shook hands and recieved hugs.
When he finally was able to get more than 6 footsteps before someone stops him, he headed for the door. Wanting to be out of the mansion as soon as possible but Caroline caught up to him.
He turned around to find the tears running down her chest and he hushed her,
"You don't want anyone to get curious now do you?" he scolded her lightly.
"Klaus…I…" he cut her off.
"Caroline. I want you to be happy. If it's not with me then I'll accept that. As long as you're happy. I still love you and I always will. I can tell from your tears that some part of you still loves me and I'm content with that" Liar "I do wish you both a wonderful life together filled with the happiness you deserve. However, asking me to standing in this mansion and watch you with another man is asking too much of me" he raised her hand to his lips and pecked the back of it so lightly but he heard her deep inhale of breath and he wanted to smirk at how much he still affected her.
"If however he does not make you happy and gives you all that you deserve…he's a dead man"
With that, he took one final look of her before walking out of the double doors and out of her life for good.
It's been almost three months and today he was in a terribly foul mood.
Why?
Well it's simple really. Today is the day Caroline truly breaks him.
Today, is her wedding.
He knew when everything was happening. Rebekah sends him updates regardless of his many attempts of telling her that he didn't want or need them.
By the time he was alerted that she was walking down the isle towards Tyler, he shut his phone off and shut off every electric device in his house and curled up in his bed.
There was no lights on.
No computers…no alarms…nothing.
Almost an hour past before someone was banging his door down in a desperate attempt to get inside of his house.
He slowly made his way to the doors and unlocked them, revealing a disheveled Rebekah with wide eyes directed at him.
"Why are you not answering your bloody phone Nik?!" she shrieked at him as she stormed past him and into his house.
"Please come in Rebekah" he mumbled sarcastically as he shut the door and turned to meet her panicked filled eyes.
Those eyes are never good.
"What happened?"
"What happened?!" she screamed at him "Oh my god Nik what was the last text you got from me?"
"The one of Caroline walking down the isle before I shut my phone off"
She slapped his arm hard "You stupid ass. Caroline walked up to Tyler and threw the flowers in his face before running out on him"
You could have heard a pin drop in that moment but Klaus's heavy breathing would have blocked out said pin.
"No one knows where she is or where'd she go. She's been gone for three hours now and her mother is really worried" Rebekah explained to him who understood the moment she had told him what happened.
He turned around and headed out the door before she could say anything.
He knew exactly where she was.
He walked to the back of his house to where the tree house he built for Henrik stood and sure enough…there was a white trail hanging from the door way.
He climbed up and noticed that she knew he was up there but didn't say anything.
He said nothing for a while, just stayed with her.
"He slept with Hayley on the night of his bachelor party and everyone knew about it but me" she finally said.
He nodded and pulled her to him where she buried her face into his chest and he sighed "He's a dead man"
