Chapter 13 Concern
I watched as the two rolled away. "Well, I guess I am going to make sure my engine running properly." I walked away leaving El Chu watching after me. My mind was back on last night's event. Why did the helicopter lead me into a dream state? Why was it this mysterious voice that helped me? The event was running through my mind multiple times. I was doing my best to think of what it meant. Usually, if I see beings I have not met yet, it means I will meet them. My mind kept me busy and I bumped into someone. I fell back with a thud. I looked up to see the group from Radiator Springs. I jumped up with joy.
"It's Silver!" Called Flo.
"Hey, guys." I smiled. I can't believe I get to talk with them again.
"How is the race?" Sheriff asked. "It is your first time, after all."
"Tougher than I thought." I chuckled.
"Now you know how I feel." Lightning smiled as if he was saying 'I told you so' with his eyes.
"How is Radiator Springs?" I asked.
"It is different without my second cop." Sheriff chuckled.
"And my mechanic in training." Ramone smiled.
"What happened to Holley and Finn?" I looked around expecting the see the two English cars.
"They had a mission." Sheriff answered. "They said they will be back on the final leg of the race."
"Sounds good to me." I nervously smiled.
"Oh, Ramone," I looked to the low rider. "Can you help me with my engine? I have been having problems with it. Something keeps popping so it stalls or shuts off."
"Why not." Ramone agreed. "Show me the engine. I will have a look."
I led Ramone to the hanger. I always locked it because I did not want anyone sabotaging my engine. As I unlocked the hanger, I pressed the button to open it. We went inside to a covered object. I pulled the cover back to reveal the engine. Ramone looked at it shocked. "Dude, it looks old."
"I know." I admitted. "Is there any way we can fix it to work better?"
"I can do what I can but there is no promise." Ramone replied. He had a look as if he had nowhere to start.
"Thank you. Do your best. I need to get ready for the race." I turned away ready to head out.
"Uh, Silver?" Ramone called; I looked over to him. "I don't think this engine will last long. It could last the rest of the races but it could fail before you finish."
"I understand." I sighed. So… I could be falling out of the sky because of engine failure. I walked out.
"Is there something wrong?" Flo asked.
I looked to the rest of the town's folk. All having concerned expressions. "Uh…" I could not lie to them. I thought of them as family. "Ramone says the engine may not last through the rest of the race." I saw them look at one another. "But, I can glide, so I will keep going."
"You can't." Sally spoke up. "Won't you crash?"
"The engine may fail but I can glide, remember, Sally?" I reminded her.
"You will me an idiot to continue." Lightning hissed.
"Never stopped you." I glared; McQueen looked taken aback. I grinned before turning to the folk. "I will be fine. If not, I would only have a few bruises." I felt nervous in my stomach. I did not feel as positive as I was saying but I did not want them to worry. "I need to think." I said as I began to walk away. I heard someone following. I looked behind to see Sheriff. He wasn't pleased. I ignored his expression and continued to walk. "What do you want?" I did not even glance at Sheriff when I asked the question.
"To try and talk you out of continuing the race of yours." Sheriff replied.
"There is no way you can stop me." I kept on walking.
"What's going on?" A familiar voice asked; we both turned to see Bulldog. I thought it was Dusty for a moment but the voice did not match.
"Nothing is wrong. We are just talking." I answered.
"Then why did he tell you that you can't continue the race?" Bulldog asked.
I looked to Sheriff. "I can still race."
"No you can't." Sheriff growled.
"What does he mean you can't?" Bulldog looked to me.
"I don't want to worry anyone." I said.
"Then don't race." Sheriff hissed.
I did not want to speak of this anymore. I turned away and began walking away. Anger surging through me. Why can't he understand that I must continue the race?
"Why can't she race?" Bulldog urged Sheriff.
"Her engine may not last the whole race." Sheriff admitted.
I growled under my breath. Can't he not tell everyone? I noticed Rod looking at me. Obviously not happy.
"I heard." Rod said.
"Heard what?" I asked, pretending to not know what he was speaking about.
"Your engine." Rod said. "What do you think you are doing? Are you planning to get hurt?"
I stopped in shock. I looked at him. "No. I know what I am doing. Don't you remember the vision? Someone is going to drown and I want to make sure it won't happen."
"I know." Rod lightened his mood for a moment before switching subject. "Why did you fly without the engine? You disobeyed my order."
"I had no choice." I looked taken aback.
"What was this choice that made you fly?" Rod growled.
"I had a vision." I wanted to hide. Rod was quite angry with me.
"Tell me this vision." Rod looked as if he was saying 'try and amuse me'.
"I followed this helicopter. He led me to the runway. He took flight and I followed. Since I did not have my engine, I flew with my own two wings. For some reason, the helicopter knew. I followed but was led into a storm. The helicopter disappeared and I was left in the raging storm. I was hit by a wave. I fell into the water doing my best to keep my head above water. Another wave hit me then I went under, drowning. When I was drowning, I felt myself falling. Something spoke next to my ear asking what I was doing. It told me to flip. I then realized that I was falling. That is when you saw the rest, except I saw the red helicopter again. He disappeared again. I did not have a good glimpse of what he looked like." I explained. I noticed Rod was wide eyed.
"When will these visions stop?" He muttered then spoke more clearly. "These visions are going to get us killed one day."
"I wish I could stop it but I can't." I said. I needed to get away from this conversation. I noticed Dusty and Ishani coming in for a landing. They were back faster than I thought. I took this as an opportunity. "I need to talk to Dusty." I said.
"You two aren't friends anymore." Rod reminded.
"I will see if I can change that." I reassured as I ran off.
I just caught up to Dusty when the two had just landed. "Dusty!" I called with a smile.
"I see your friend came to greet you." Ishani smiled.
"She isn't my friend anymore." Dusty reminded.
"What do you mean?" Ishani looked shocked. "Even if she isn't on your team, you still can be friends."
"She broke a promise." Dusty said.
"I broke no promise." I said as I crossed my arms.
"You did to." Dusty growled.
Ishani sighed. "When will you two make up? Become friends again and the trouble will pass."
"I won't be friends with someone who goes to a different team." Dusty glared at me.
"For your information, I quit his team." I growled. "That bossy hunk of metal thinks he can position me anywhere he likes. Well, he got that wrong." I snorted.
"You quit?" Dusty looked dumbfounded.
"Yes." I hissed.
Dusty was about to say something when the announcements started for the racers to go to the starting line.
"We need to get to the track." I said.
"Silver." I hear a familiar voice call me.
I stopped and let Dusty and Ishani head to the race by themselves. I looked behind me to see Zed rolling up to me with a guilty look. "What is wrong?" I looked concerned.
"Ripslinger said you can't unjoin." Zed kept his gaze away from mine.
"What!?" I was so shocked that I could not believe it. "I don't want to join that idiot." I screeched.
"I know, I know." Zed replied. "I can't help you there. The only way off the team is if you quit. Or die."
"I am not quitting the race and I am not planning to die." I hissed almost to myself.
"I am sorry. He wants to see you on the track." Zed started to roll away, leaving me alone in a daze.
My head swirled of what just happened. How am I going to explain this to Dusty? He won't trust me. I shook the thought as I was about to head out. How can I meet Ripslinger on the track if I came in ninth place and he came in first? The ones in charge of this race won't allow it. I shook the thought away then decided to head to the track. I am not going to take orders from a bossy plane. I will stay where I should be. And most likely, I am going to follow Dusty. I headed to my hanger first to get my engine. Your engine may not last the whole race. Ramone's words relayed in my head. You can't race. That was Sally then Sheriff. I shook it away. I transformed and strapped the engine onto my back. I walked out of the hanger and onto the runway. Dusty was ready to fly when I got there. Just in time too. I stood next to him as the timer counted down. We took off with ease and into the air. I saw a glimpse of something and I looked but it was gone.
"Hey!" I hear Dusty call out to me. "Watch where you fly."
"Sorry." I shook my head.
"Why are you distracted so easily?" Dusty asked as we flew low but leveled.
I did not want to lie about this. I had to tell him. "I get visions." I watched as Dusty looked like he did not believe me. "Before you say that you don't believe me…"
"I don't." He was being honest.
"The visions I see come true." I said.
"I still don't believe you." Dusty looked at me with disbelief.
"Okay. I see a racer drowning in the ocean." I said. "See if that comes true." I flew a bit back so we were out of ear shot.
