Recap: Lily and James were walking to the Great Hall when the marauders begin the prank. Lily thinks James was in on it and is very angry at him. That night, Lily sees movement out on the grounds and goes to investigate. She is attacked by Lupin in his wolf form but James (as a stag) rescues her and transforms. Later, as Lily tends to James' wounds she figures out that all the marauders are animagi. James assures her that the Marauders will trust her not to tell and that he will tell them she knows.
Chapter 14
Lily arrived alone in the Great Hall the following morning. She had slept in, which was hardly surprising after the antics of the previous night, and everyone was already eating breakfast, or in Sirius' case, shovelling it down their throats at fifty miles an hour. Running around after a werewolf was obviously hungry work and smiling to herself, surprised at how relaxed she felt and Lily took a seat between James and Sirius.
"Morning," she said cheerfully. The two boys turned towards her, mildly surprised by her appearance next to them. James' face was bruised and badly cut, but it lit up when Lily gave him a small smile. Sirius, on the other hand, had dark rings under his eyes and only grunted in acknowledgement of her presence. "Where're Remus and Peter?" Lily asked, noticing their absence and worrying.
James cast a wary glance around before muttering quietly, "Wormy's with Remus in the hospital wing."
Lily nodded in understanding.
"Hi Lily!" Mary called from a few places down. She sat with Alice and Frank; Marlene, yet again, was missing.
"Oh hi Mary, hi Alice, I didn't see you!" She called back, giving a wave. The girls exchanged glances and Alice winked suggestively at Lily.
"Oh we know!" Alice said while Mary looked extremely pleased about something. Lily would have to inquire about it later. She felt a tap on the shoulder and turned back to find Sirius on a break from his excessive consuming of breakfast foods.
"I have to say, I didn't think you'd take this so well," he whispered, raising his eyebrows.
"Well, I sort of figured it out myself," she said, shrugging. "Doesn't mean I completely approve though."
"Oh, of course not," Sirius said in mock seriousness, grinning at her. "Old Prongsie thought you'd be angry at him and that you'd end up back where you started."
Lily shrugged again. "I was angry," she said, "What if something had happened to all of you in your Animagus form and nobody would ever know? I mean, James hurt his shoulder pretty badly last night."
Sirius smirked and looked at her. "Oh Lilsy, you do realise we always have it under control and nobody has ever been dangerously hurt because-"
"Yes, yes, I know" Lily interrupted, smiling, "You're fantastic and brilliant and way too handsome to die."
"Exactly!" Sirius grinned, reaching for the plate of bacon. "Now, if you'll excuse me, I have important business to get back to." And with that, he grabbed four pieces of bacon and shoved them all into his mouth at once.
"Lily, me and Alice are going to the library to do that Herbology essay, would you like to come?" Mary said upon entering the Head's common room.
Lily looked up from her desk and then glanced across at James who was lounging on one of the sofas, supposedly studying Transfiguration, when in reality he had spent much of the evening gazing at Lily scribbling furiously on rolls of parchment. "I can't, we've a prefect meeting soon."
"Oh, please? I'll be stuck with Frank and Alice the entire time and you know what they're like!"
Lily rolled her eyes. "You have my deepest sympathy. C'mon James, we'll be late." The Head Boy snapped his book shut immediately and bounced off the couch, landing beside his female counterpart.
"Oh, I see. I'll just leave you two alone then..." Mary said slyly, drifting out of the room.
"Oh, those girls!" Lily sighed as she and James followed Mary exiting the room and began the trek through the innumerable corridors and staircases. "How's Remus doing?"
James just shrugged. "I only popped in once after lunch. He's worn out, but nothing serious."
"I'm glad," Lily replied thoughtfully. "When do you next have Quidditch practice?"
"Tomorrow, why?" James said, puzzled at her sudden interest. "Does it interfere with our patrol?"
"No, I just thought I might run down for half an hour to watch." James stopped, a look of incredulity and happiness forming on his face. "I haven't spoken to Marlene in a while, see, so I thought it might be a good chance - What?" Lily asked, confused by James' quickly changing expression.
"It's just...Oh, nothing."
Lily would have persisted, but at that moment they arrived outside the room buzzing with prefects.
"Ready?" James asked, pushing the door open, his good mood evidently recovered.
"All set." Lily winked, grinning.
