Tyler led Burt to the front door. He did not know the password. "Hey-ugh Burt, we're home. I can't get you in, unless you punch the password." Tyler looked at the frozen Burt who was still trying to cycle through the information he was just given. "BURT!" Tyler almost yelled into his ear.
Burt flinched. He stared at Tyler wide eyed before taking in his surroundings. He was amazed how he ended up back at his home.
"Finally," Tyler sighed in relief. "Look, I know this might be a lot to take in, but you have to keep going. If I wasn't there, you could be El Blanco's next meal or worse. Let's just wait until we hear something. We can ask Twitchell if he has any news. Everything will turn out for the better."
Burt opened his mouth but then closed it. He had wanted to say several things but also didn't want to say anything. He let a breath out through his nostrils before nodding his head. Tyler patted him on the back before leaving him. Burt punched his password into the keypad dragging his fingers as he dragged his feet through the threshold when he opened the door. He vaguely remembered Tyler saying something about the two of them keeping this secret for the time being.
Burt plopped onto his desk chair in front of his computer. He stared at the screen for a few moments. A soft sound letting him know that he had mail from his dating site. Burt blinked at the little blurb. It took him a few more minutes before grasping for the wireless mouse. He moved his cursor over to the blurb. It opened showing him a new message from desertflower78.
"How was your day?" He read the message out loud. Burt looked upwards trying to keep the tears from forming. He took a deep breath before he regained his composure. He typed a message back.
Nancy was sketching out a new idea for her ceramics when she heard the same noise coming from her computer. She set down her work to see what her new interest wrote. "It became a terrible day. I always just my instinct and I am afraid that it will turn to be true. There were a few chances where I was wrong. All I ever wanted was just a nice and quiet life but somehow, I have just ended up as a tumbleweed being blown around by the winds not knowing what trouble I will end up next. Huh. Poor guy." She typed away hoping to cheer him up as much as she could.
Burt opened the new message. "I hope that things will turn out for the better. Life isn't always fair but we hope that the outcome of our obstacles is. It may seem that you have fallen down the rabbit's hole and see as there is no way out, but there is always a way. You may have to change yourself for a bit to escape but soon you can recover to the same person as you were before. I am always here to listen without prejudice. I hope in turn that I can trust in you." He smirked a bit before typing back.
Nancy's heart was fluttering a bit when she sent that message. She didn't know if she was being too cheeky. A new message appeared. The two kept at it again into the early morning. They kept at it for a few more days. Rose was still working on the lab. She had to go back into the lab to finish her report. She took pictures of where the incident happened. She continued with her plan of finishing the hallway. Tyler had gotten his parts and was rearranging his shop. Jodi and Larry were going over the shop's website and how it needed to be changed to draw in more customers.
At headquarters, Wes's condition was getting better. He was hooked up to an IV drip. His infusion pump distilled certain drugs at certain times. His fluid line would change colors. Doctors and nurses examined him, took samples, and kept monitoring him. The section that oversaw the failed Project Mixmaster creatures did not leak any information but the section that was involved with military affairs did. Wes's emergency contact was his mom, Heather Gummer. A phone call and a detailed letter informing her of his state of health arrived the day he was finished with his surgery.
She thanked the person on the phone as she had the letter in her hand. Heather read the letter with such anticipation her hand shook. She placed her other hand on the paper to stabilize. She kept rereading her son's name, Perfection, and near fatal injury. She let the paper slip through her fingers before turning around with such swiftness the paper was still drifting down. She grabbed part of her belongings for a short trip along with some guns before heading back to Perfection, Nevada.
The town of Perfection was bustling with its few visitors that day. As the last of the tourists headed out of the parking area in front of Chang's, an old muscle car came pulling in. Out stepped a man in black skinny jeans, leather boots, a tank top with a plunging neckline that showed his aged tattoos and torso that had aged muscles. He wore a cotton suit jacket with the sleeves scrunched up to his elbows. He wore a few rings and studded bracelets. His hair was feathery and styled to look tousled and natural. He viewed the surrounding area behind dark aviator sunglasses. He was an aged rock musician. He closed his car door.
It was a different place for him. He was searching for his first love. This musician had found out that he had a child from her. He had contacted his child, Mindy, when she was off in college. He couldn't believe that the fairy hippy, Nancy, became a suburban mother living out in the middle of who knows where raising his child. After rocky relationships with his past partners, this musician was ready to settle down for good and he was hoping it would be with the one person who always saw the good in him, especially when he deemed himself undeserving. He headed off towards Chang's Market to get something to drink before getting his courage up to face her one more time.
Larry and Jodi were next to the coffee bar. Larry had concocted new drinks for Jodi and was having her taste test.
"I call this one The Graboid Attack," he pointed to the golden drink that had red on the top in front of her. Jodi tried the drink. "We can use this as our base then add to it. I was thinking of using the pink and green umbrellas for some of Earl's and Grady's drinks when they were in Mexico."
Jodi was surprised how great it tasted. Not that it tasted bad but she thought it was going to be heavy but it was light and refreshing. She liked the idea of the cocktails and mixers. Larry even had recipes for non-alcoholic versions. She was had a meeting with him to go over ways of competing with popular food and drink chains. They caught the musician from the corners of their eyes. Jodi and Larry greeted him. The musician asked them questions about this place. He was curious about the lifestyle.
An hour later, a JEEP parked next to the muscle car. Both doors opened at the same time. "Well, it was nice talking to you again, Mindy, you sure have grown up into a beautiful young lady," Heather commented.
"Thanks, Heather, I hope everything turns out okay," Mindy smiled. The two of them got out of the vehicle.
Tyler, Rosalita, and Roger were enjoying a nice conversation when they saw Heather and Mindy. The three stopped on the wooden side walk as they saw Burt's vehicle was coming to park at Chang's.
"Is that who I think it is with Mindy?" Roger whispered.
"Yeah, that's Burt's wife, Heather," Rosalita nodded. She didn't want to take her eyes off the situation.
Tyler gulped. He forgot about Heather. She must know something about Wes and is here find out more information. Another vehicle just pulled in. It was Twitchell's. This situation was getting worse and worse by the minute. Nancy had a box of new items of the store she was bringing over. She saw the three standing there. It confused her. Next, she saw Heather and Mindy, this brought a smile to her face. She kept looking on and saw Burt and Twitchell. Her smile faded and now fear came in. Something familiar caught her eye. She looked back to an old muscle car she was all too familiar with.
Mindy spotted her mom. "Oh mom! How are you?"
Nancy brought herself to walk again towards her daughter. She kept stealing glances at the nostalgic car that was bringing back fleeting memories.
Burt spotted Heather. Heather spotted him. The two were staring at each other, waiting for the other to make a move. Twitchell was about to ask Burt something when he saw the standoff. He backed away from Burt, not wanting to get into the mix of things.
Jodi, Larry, and the musician could see that there was something happening outside. The three all decided to take a look.
