"She had been given a wonderful gift: life. Sometimes it was cruelly taken away too soon, but it's what you did with it that counted, not how long it lasted."
P.S I love you –Cecelia Ahern-
.
The wind rustled trough the trees, the sun shined brightly and warmed her skin. Her dark hair was sprawled on the grass as she laid there with her closed eyes. The feeling of contentment ran through her whole body and she sighed softly. Sometimes she couldn't believe how someone could be this happy.
A voice shrieked in the distance and she smiled, she could hear the footsteps approaching. "Mamma" The voice said, closer now. Her eyes opened and she sat up with her arms open to receive the little dark haired boy than ran towards her.
"Aren't you a beautiful little boy?" She cooed while the kid arms went around her neck. She lifted her eyes and saw her husband walking towards her. His light brown hair was disheveled and his clothes dirty. He had been working all day and there was nothing that made her happier that the sight of him returning home.
The little one snuggled closer to her, his little head resting against her chest as she petted his hair softly. "How was your day?" She asked with a smile. "Did you two had fun?"
"We had lots of fun, didn't we little Ted?" He asked to his son.
"Yes we did momma. And uncle Enzo was with us too, he let me drive his car." The kid said excitedly, his blue eyes shining while looking at her. She looked at him with a smile and then stared at her husband with a quirked eyebrow.
"Not literally." He answered and smiled at her.
Theodore was entertaining himself by playing with the ribbon on his mother dress so he took the opportunity to say what he had been dreading all morning. "I think he found us."
Her eyes that had been fixated on her son looked at him immediately; the fear in them was overwhelming. "Why do you think that?"
"Enzo, he saw him two days ago."
"But that doesn't mean he knows where we are…maybe it was a coincidence." Her frightened voice made his heart ache. "Maybe my brother was confused and-"
"Mary you know that nothing is a coincidence with him and Enzo was not confused." He said with resignation all over his face. The tears started to well up in her eyes and she cradle the child closer to her. "He wouldn't have said anything if he wasn't sure."
"We can't stay here any longer Sebastian." She said while looking at her husband. "We can't."
"I know. Enzo is arranging everything right at this moment, darling." He leaned towards her and stroked her cheek. "We'll be leaving tomorrow night."
"Perfect, that's just perfect." She said trying to smile but the fear was still evident on her face.
"I'm so sorry Mary." He said shaking his head and looking down.
"You have nothing to be sorry about." She placed a hand on his cheek and he stared back at her. His blue eyes looking at her with pain.
"Momma, hungry." The little boy said and she smiled back at him. Forgetting for a minute about the darkness that was coming towards them. As long as she had her two men with her, nothing else in the world mattered.
"Then we better give you some food." She smiled and discretely wiped the tears off her face.
"Come on Ted." Sebastian said, the boy left his mother's lap and took the hand that his dad was offering.
They walked together towards the house, Sebastian had Ted's left hand while Mary had his right. She looked up to see her husband and smiled briefly at him. "I could never regret any of this."
Elena's eyes opened slowly and she was immediately disorientated. Was that another memory? Her hand instantly went to her stomach, the action causing a big amount of pain on her arm. She felt pain all over her body. She looked around the room and frowned, she wasn't with Klaus anymore, she was in some kind of hospital. She looked at her body expecting to see the bloodied marks on her but found nothing. She was wearing a clean hospital gown and it seemed that someone had washed all the dirt off her body. What had happened? She remembered being with Katherine in the hallway and then nothing.
She felt like crap, every part of her body was in pain and her eyes were heavy, she felt so tired. Her eyes were closing again when she heard a noise coming from the door and minutes later Damon walked in.
Her heart started beating furiously as tears welled up in her eyes. "Damon!" She cried and he rushed towards her immediately. "You found me, you found me!"
Damon kissed her softly, his tears mixing with hers. "I will always find you Elena, always." He kissed her forehead and touched her face lightly. "I can't believe you're awake, I was so scared."
"What happened Damon? Tell me." She asked, confusion was all over her face.
He brought her hands to his lips and kissed them gently. Elena closed her eyes softly, enjoying the sensation. She thought she would never see him again, she had been so scared.
"We went to get you. Sheila received help from some witches and we thought we could be strong enough to defeat Klaus." Damon shook his head and looked down, Elena could see the dark circles under his eyes and lines of tiredness on his face. He looked way older than his twenty five years.
"Thought? Does that mean that he's still-"
"Yes, he's still alive." Damon answered and Elena closed her eyes, for a minute she dared to hope that this was all over.
"Damon, how's the baby?" Elena asked while taking her hand to her stomach once again. Damon closed his eyes as he fought the tears that were gathering in them. "Damon?"
"Elena…I-"He took a deep breath, his blue eyes were full of sorrow while staring at her. "Elena, we lost the baby."
"What?" Her voice was trembling, she stared at him in disbelief. "No, it can't be." Then she remembered the blood, it had been so much blood. "Damon, no!" She cried. "No, no, no!" Her eyes looked around the room frantically, looking for something, something that told her this was a dream. That her baby was still alive and safe inside her.
"I'm so sorry. I'm so sorry." Damon dropped his head into the bed, next to her body and sobbed like a little boy. "We should have ran away, I never should have let that happen."
Elena couldn't answer, couldn't form a word. It was like her throat was closed, she couldn't do anything but feel the pain that was eating her up. The baby had been a surprise, she had been so scared of being a pregnant teenager but she had loved him since the minute she knew he was inside her.
"Damon!" She cried, the tears were falling unchecked down her cheeks "Why? Why is this happening to us" He lifted his head, his blue eyes were full of tears and her heart broke even more at the sight of him.
"I-I don't know." He answered. "We have to go Lena, we have to start running." His tone was desperate.
"No." She answered. "I won't leave, I won't let that bastard- I won't let him- we have to kill him!" The anger in her voice startled him for a minute.
"Elena, we may not have a chance against him."
"I don't care, I have to make him pay for this- for everything." She said between sobs while remembering the face of the little blue eyed boy she had held in her memory a few moments ago. "We can't let him win again."
"I'll do whatever you ask me to do." He answered before kissing her cheek softly. "I'm so sorry." He said and she broke down in tears once again. She had never felt this way before, never. Nothing ever felt like this, she didn't know if she could stand it.
"He took our baby Damon." She sobbed. He pressed their foreheads together as he let the grief overtake his body. Their cries echoed in the small hospital room.
Elena felt numb. She couldn't understand why everything was happening to them. How Klaus could be so cruel, so evil. She never hated anyone before, never. Not even the people that made fun of her back home. But now, now Klaus had killed a part of her, and she hated him. She hated him and won't stop until he was in the ground.
Moments later the door opened again and a young doctor walked in. Damon was still holding Elena tightly even though the tears had stopped a few minutes ago. "Meredith." Damon softly and released Elena so he was able to sit upright.
"How are you feeling Elena?" The young doctor questioned softly.
Elena stared at her for a minute; her eyes vacant. "Everything hurts." Meredith's eyes showed sympathy. "Can I get something to sleep?" The brunette girl requested softly.
"Of course, you're pretty beaten up so it will be really uncomfortable for a few days. But don't worry I'll give you something for the pain." She smiled softly and walked closer to where Damon was now standing.
"Was there anything- could I have done something?" Her eyes looked at the doctor and Meredith felt a great sadness for her. No one should experience something like this, especially not some as young as Elena.
"No, Elena. These things happen and sometimes we don't know why." The doctor walked closer to her and held her hand tightly. "There was nothing you could have done." Elena nodded while tears started to fall from her eyes once again. "You'll be okay, I promise." Meredith stroked her hair softly like a mother comforting a child. Damon had to look away; he hated seeing her in so much pain.
"We can't have her here any longer Damon." Meredith said in a hushed tone a few minutes later "People will start asking questions."
"I understand, thank you for everything." He said sincerely.
Meredith was Alaric's girlfriend. Therefore she was just as weird as his best friend. She had always been interested in the whole supernatural thing and she had figured out his secret a long time ago, something of what he was very grateful right now. Meredith saved Elena's life and he could never thank her enough for that.
"I'll give you some pain medications and something that will help her sleep." She said softly. "I'll go check on her when my shift is over and Alaric already moved some of the hospital things she may need to the house."
"Thank you Meredith, really, you have no idea how much."
"It's okay Damon." She placed a hand on his arm and squeezed softly. "I'm so sorry." Damon nodded and looked down. He didn't want to start crying again. At least not in front of Meredith "Here Elena, this will help you sleep." She said softly before walking away from Damon and injecting something in Elena's IV.
"Thanks." Elena murmured.
"I'll be outside." Meredith whispered before giving one last look to Damon and leaving the room.
"Damon?" Elena's voice said and he turned his head to stare into her brown eyes. "Can you please come here?" Damon gave her a small smile and walked towards the bed again. She looked so tiny there, so scared, she was just an eighteen year old girl. This shouldn't be happening to her. "Can you hold me, please?"
"You don't even have to ask." He whispered before kissing her forehead and climbing into the bed next to her.
"Don't leave me again, please." She said and her voice broke down "Please, don't ever leave!"
He closed his eyes while he held her close to his body. "I promise you, I won't ever leave you again." Elena sobbed a little bit more before the tiredness started to invade her body, her eyes closing softly while she listened to Damon's heartbeat.
The house was partially dark. The only light came from the back room; he walked towards it and stood in the doorframe. The light of the candles flickering in the darkness, he stood there for a minute, listening to the soft sound of her voice as she sang to the baby in her arms.
"I don't think I ever saw something more beautiful than this." He murmured and she lifted her head to look at him. A small smile appearing on her face immediately. "Is she asleep?" He asked gesturing to the baby in his wife's arms.
"No." She shook her head lightly with a smile still on her face. "I think she was waiting for you."
He smiled back at her and walked closer towards the rocking chair she was sitting in. "Is that right?" He kneeled next to them and stroked the baby's head softly. "My little Isabella, where you waiting for me?" The baby's brown eyes stared at him before smiling softly. "I think every day she looks more like you" He said softly before placing a kiss on the baby's forehead.
"Oh, we both know that she does not look like me." She said with a half laugh and leaned to place a kiss on his husband forehead. "I missed you."
"I missed you too." He answered.
"I was so scared." She admitted.
"Why?"
"I was afraid you'd never come back."
He looked at her with soft eyes and placed a hand on her chin, forcing her to look at him. "I would never leave you. I'll always be here for you, until the end of time."
"I love you Damon."
"I love you too Elena." He placed a chaste kiss to her lips before taking his attention back to the child in her arms. "I think someone is asleep." He said with a smile while contemplating the gentle rise and fall of his daughter chest.
"I told you she was only waiting for you."
Elena woke up startled. Her heart felt like she had been running a marathon and a faint layer of sweat covered her forehead. Another memory. An overwhelming pain invaded her body once again as she remembered everything that had happened.
"Are you okay?"A voice said from across the room and she lifted her head to see Caroline sitting on a chair next to the window. She realized then than she was in a different bedroom than the one she first woke up in. The room around her was extremely familiar…she was back at Sheila's house.
"Been better." Elena answered sardonically
"We're so sorry Elena." Stefan said from the other side of the room, he was standing next to the door; a grim look was on his face.
Elena nodded and smiled softly at them. Somehow them being there with her made her feel a little bit better already.
"This is my fault." Caroline said before breaking into sobs. Elena and Stefan both stared at her in shock, not really knowing what to say. "I should have taken care of you, I shouldn't have let him take you-"
"Caroline this isn't your fault." Stefan said and walked towards the blonde girl.
"You couldn't have known he was coming." Elena said softly while sitting on the bed. "And there was nothing you could have done against him." She leaned her back against the headboard. Her body was still throbbing with pain so she wondered briefly if her friends would have some of the pain medication the doctor talked about.
"But I-it's just I can't believe this is happening." The blonde girl whined as Stefan held her close to his body.
"I know, I never thought someone as evil as him could exist." Elena said softly, her voice carried a hatred that she didn't even know was there. "Which Is why I hope Sheila can find a way to kill him, soon." Her friends looked at each other and then stared back at her. Elena could see that something was wrong from the painful look they both had. "What is it?"
"Sheila, she-" Stefan took a deep breath. "Klaus killed her."
"What?" All the air left Elena's lungs, she hadn't been expecting that. "It can't be…oh my God!" She covered her mouth with her hand in shock.
"You really didn't needed to say that to her." Caroline gave Stefan a hard look and got up from the chair in order to sit with Elena in the bed.
"Oh God, how's Bonnie?" Elena asked, new tears were forming in her eyes.
"She's-she's a mess." Caroline answered sincerely.
"Oh no, this is all my fault." Elena said while closing her eyes.
"None of this is your fault Lena." Stefan answered. "This is Klaus fault, he's a monster, this is all his doing."
"You guys can't stay here any longer." Elena said while looking at her two best friends. "I can't have you two risking your lives for me."
"What are you talking about?" Caroline said with a frown.
"You're both in danger if you stay here with me, when we decided to come together to New York we never expecting any of this. We all know that if you stay here any longer your life is in danger, you need to go back to Mystic Falls." She stared at them with determination on her eyes. The three of them had been inseparable since the moment they met and she could never forgive herself if something bad happened to them because of her.
"Are you insane?" Stefan almost shouted and for a minute Elena was startled to see him lose his always so calm demeanor. "We're not going anywhere without you!"
"Yeah, we're you're best friends. We're with you in the good ones and in the bad ones and you have no right to choose for us." The blonde girl said in a clipped tone.
"I think that best friends never really think that will be involved in crazy stuff like this." Elena said with a small smile. "Evil psycho God with an equal evil psycho sister? I don't think that's in the friendship manifest we did when we were ten."
"No it isn't, you just like to make things more interesting." Stefan answered with a smirk and Elena couldn't help but smile at him.
"You know you'll do the same thing for us." Caroline said with a smile. "And we'll do anything for you."
"Yeah I'll even sell my kidney for you." Stefan said and the three of them couldn't help but laugh at his words. There was no doubt that her friends always found the way of making her feel better.
"I love you guys so much." She said with emotion on her voice.
"And we love you." Caroline answered.
A knock on the door was heard and three of them looked at door to see Damon walk in. "Am I interrupting?" He said while staring at the three teenagers in the bed.
"Yes you are." Caroline stated. "But since you are oh so hot we forgive you." She said with a smile while Stefan rolled his eyes at her.
"And I think this is our time to leave." Stefan said before dragging Caroline out of the room with him.
Damon watched with a small smile as the two of Elena's friend left the room then he turned around and walked towards the bed she was lying in.
"How are you feeling?" He asked, concern was all over his face.
"I guess there's no use in lying to you." Her brown eyes stared at him, the pain in them made him flinch. He hated to see her like this.
He climbed into the bed next to her and puller her towards her body. "I had a dream." She said in a whisper.
"About what?" He asked while stroking her hair lightly, her head was now against his chest and he was holding her almost to the point of being painful. But she didn't cared. She needed to feel close to him.
"More than a dream, it was a memory…I saw Ted and Isabella." She closed her eyes as the tears started to well up in them again. "I held them both." Her voice broke down and he felt his heart being ripped open. "And I couldn't help but wonder, how can you do it Damon?"
"Excuse me?" He asked, uncertain of what she meant.
"How do you wake up every morning…remembering…everything that we have lost?" Her hands clutched his shirt tightly. "I would have crumbled down a long time ago." She was sobbing again. "I wish I could be as strong as you."
"I'm not that strong."
"Yes you are."
Damon held her more tightly against him. "I keep going because I know you're by my side." He pressed a kiss to her forehead and for a minute she felt all her worries fading away.
"God Damon, I never thought I could find someone like you." She said softly. "I spent my childhood thinking you were a dream, thinking I was insane. But you spent your whole life knowing you were going to find me." She kissed his neck softly. "I love you, so much."
"I love you too."
"Till the end of times?" She lifted her head to look at him and saw recognition appear on his face.
"Till the end of times." He smiled at her and kissed her lips softly.
"And you couldn't have thought of a better thing to say to her?" Caroline shrieked at Stefan who was sitting in the couch in front of the fireplace.
"What do you want me to say to her? I can't exactly tell her what's happening here." Stefan said exasperated. He hated when Caroline started to yell at him.
"What's going on?" Alaric in queried while entering the living room.
"Stefan's mom called." She huffed. "You know you could try not answering next time."
"Yeah and let her believe something bad happened to us." He said rolling his eyes.
"What did you tell her?" Alaric said while plopping down on the couch next to the boy.
"I said that we will be delaying a bit more but that there was no trouble, I asked her to try calming down Elena's mom." Stefan said and rubbed his forehead. He swore he had aged ten years in the last ten days. "But she knows something is up."
"Of course she knows. No one will believe that we stayed here for this long as tourists." She snorted and her blue eyes looked at him with annoyance. "Which is why the next time she calls, don't answer!"
"Can you please just-"
"Oh God! when are you two going to finally have sex so we can't stop hearing this?" Katherine said while walking into the room. Alaric tried to suppress his laughter while the teenagers looked at the model with their mouths hanging open.
"What?" Caroline stuttered.
"Yeah, the sexual tension here is so thick that even Ric is a bit flushed." The elder girl said and Alaric couldn't help but laugh out loud while Caroline and Stefan looked nervously around the room.
"I don't know what you're talking about." Stefan said while looking down. Katherine smirked and sat down in one of the arm chairs. She had taken a bath and Caroline had given her some clothes so now she looked more like her old self.
"Yeah right."
Caroline and Stefan still didn't know how to react so Alaric decided to put them both out of their misery. "So Kat, are you leaving again?" The blonde man said.
"Nope, I'm staying this time."
"Why?" Caroline asked, suddenly interested in the conversation again. "I mean no offense, but I think that if I were you I'll be out of the door a long time ago."
"And yet you're still here." The model answered with a smile. "I can't leave, not this time."
"You do know you don't owe me anything anymore, right? You never did Kat." Damon said while entering the room. Katherine looked at him with sympathy. He looked way older than his age and she felt sad for him.
"I do Damon, I'll always be in debt to you." She said while staring deeply at him. "But I'm staying because I owe this to myself." Damon nodded and sat in the couch with Stefan and Ric. "If there is one thing in this world I want to witness, it's Klaus fall down."
"If we can make it." Stefan muttered.
"Just have a little faith kid." Katherine answered. "Not even Klaus can be so lucky."
"I wouldn't be so sure." Damon snorted and looked at Stefan. "For the first time, I agree with you in something." He shook his head and stared at the fireplace. "I really don't know what to do now. Elena doesn't want to run away."
"Of course she doesn't. I'm surprised you do." Katherine said.
"I'm scared for her, I don't want to see her suffering anymore." He closed his eyes and leaned his head back on the couch.
"You're underestimating her Damon, she's stronger thank you think." Caroline said softly.
"Exactly, no more running Damon." Katherine said while staring deeply at her friend. "I won't stop until that beast is dead. I'm so tired of running."
"You really do hate him right?" Stefan asked from the couch.
"You have no idea." The elder girl said. "Sometimes I still get nightmares…because of all the things he did-" She closed her eyes for a moment, trying to compose herself. "There's not one thing I wouldn't do to kill that son of a bitch."
The silence reigned in the living room for a moment. The only sound that could be heard was the fire crackling in the fire place. They were all lost in their thoughts, in things they needed to do, in what they needed to protect, in the danger that was coming towards them. So when the bell ran they were all a little scared for a moment. It was as if now they needed to pay attention to every little thing that was unexpected because they didn't know when the evil could strike.
"I'll get it." Katherine said once she realized no one was planning on opening the door.
"Wait!" Ric said "It could be a trap."
"Yes, because Klaus is going to ring the bell." She said rolling her eyes. "Trust me he's not that polite."
Katherine walked towards the door and when she opened she found something she hadn't expected. A man was standing there, he was incredible handsome, he was wearing dressing pants and a jacket and he had the most beautiful eyes she's ever seen. She stood there just staring at him for a few seconds and a blush crept to her face when she realized how stupid she must look.
"I'm sorry, can I help you?" She asked.
"Actually, I'm here to help you." He said in a low voice.
"What?" She asked confused.
"To defeat Klaus, I heard that you could use some help."
"Who are you?" She said with a frown.
"My name is Elijah."
