Chapter 14
The following weeks were hectic with the coming preparations. Leonore's ascension was finally underway. Sonora found herself once again in the open tower of the Cathedral. The very one she once spent her time in as a princess. The one where their love was let known to each other. Coming to ponder and think alone. Spending her morning answering questions of what was to come of the Order. Honestly she didn't know, all she knew was that without demons, they would no longer be a reason for them to exist. They were created to defend humanity after all. For now she would speak with the Clave's Elders, the demon threat wasn't simply gone now that Naberius was. Between the Order and the Clave they could keep the chaos to a minimum and still live.
The past few days she mauled over the details. Sending Barachel and Levi as representatives for The Order. Letting them handle the negotiations and preparations for new patrols.
She sighed as she stepped closer to the open ledge of the tower. Looking over the slightly brighter city, it looked different, felt different. Transforming for the first time in what seemed like months, feeling the breeze. Stretching her wings, feeling its chill against her stone physique. Hearing the door close behind her, she gently shifted to the side, lowering her wings, once again turning to flesh. Standing near the door, her mother stood there, arms crossed, and it was obvious her anger was flaring.
"Why are you up here?"
"Trying to clear my head."
"What could be possibly be clouding your mind at a time like this?" Leonore arched a brow.
"And what kind of time is this?"
"A time for celebration of course."
"No offense mother, but its never really been a time or cause for celebration." rolling her eyes slightly before she continued. "If you haven't cared to notice."
"Well I see your not exactly happy that I'm ascending. I would have thought you would be ecstatic."
"Part of me maybe. There are other things going on around here, you know."
" Are things not going well with your motions with the Clave?"
"That's going rather well, Gideon is handling the schedule for patrols on our end."
"I see. Is everything alright with your little relationship?" She asked, her tone almost sounded as if she was hopeful the answer would be, no.
"For the hundredth time, mother, its none of you business." Her anger starting to flare in her voice.
"Your my business, from the very day you were born." Seeing Sonora's hand bawl into fists, Leonore took a step back.
"As my mother you should want to see me happy. No matter who its with or what my title is or what will be..."
Leonore arched a brow at the last bit of Sonora's comment. "Oh I see, you plan on marring him, is that it? Plan on giving your secret a way out of damnation?" Her sneer was as harsh as the meaning behind her words.
"Marrying him in my business mother, he gains no new title nor does he wish for one."
"And?"
"What damnable secret are you talking about?"
"Maybe you truly don't know, least not yet, but soon my dear daughter."
"You can't sit there and spout craziness and expect me to follow along. The only secret I bare is the one you've hidden from me."
"Is that so? Then tell me, don't stand there and claim to know, what secrets my heart hides."
Turning away from her, Sonora peered back out at the city. "Did you love him? Care for him?" Her words echoed softly in the breezy air of the tower.
Leonore's smirk fell, leaving her face as pale as her stone form. "You mean your father?"
"Yes, my father. Did you care for him? Love him even? Was he just a sad pawn in all this?"
"You shouldn't speak ill of the dead. I don't need to explain myself to you."
"Speak ill of the dead? Mother your still here, now tell me the truth. Not the fairy tale you've told my whole life."
"It wasn't a fairy tale. He is my secret to bare, not yours."
Once the sound of Leonore's steps, completely faded away, she shifted back into her stone form. Letting out a roar of frustration and anger as reality began to sink in.
The truth was, she still hadn't told Gideon about her conversation with Terra. It wasn't a topic she knew anything about, and since she wasn't sure. The stress of everything was overwhelming, how could she plop the 'baby' possibility on his plate. Now her mother's refusal to even tell her about her own father. Did he know her mother was pregnant? Did he have any say in what happened in the life of his daughter? Would he be proud of her? A million possibilities and the one person who knows the truth would soon be locked in heaven for the rest of eternity.
Retreating to her room, she was not in the mood to go another round with her mother. Hearing the shower through the bathroom door, she locked the bedroom door behind her. Plopping down across the middle of her bed, kicking her shoes off. Almost half asleep, she didn't hear the water shut off or even when he ca,me back into the room. Barefoot in nothing but a towel loosely draped around his waist. Placing his hand on her side, snapped her out of her exhausted murkiness. Sitting up, her eyes swam in the site of him.
"Are you alright?"
"I'm more then alright these days." Giving him a small smile, taking his hands in hers. He noticed when her smile fell. "Just most days, I just wish she'd leave me be."
"Still trying discourage you from being with me or has she found something else to irritate you with?"
"More or less, her latest bit of secrecy just might be working my last nerve."
She tried not to laugh at his mock look of surprise that he ended in a slight pout.
"Oh stop, don't look at me like that. You know how she is." Shifting her eyes away from his, thanking the fact he was still very much only wearing a towel gave her distraction.
"I do, but what could she say now that could be bothering you so much?"
"Well the secret as to why she won't tell me who my father is or was, for one."
"Why?"
"I don't know, but I think she thinks that I have a secret she is trying to exploit."
"The visions, maybe?"
"But why wait until now."
"Well is there another secret I don't know about? Maybe its just because she is leaving, and wants to torture you with it."
"Its possible, I wouldn't put it past her." Averting her eyes to the tiny droplets of water gliding down his chest before disappearing into the towel. Her concentration fading into soft oblivion. Biting her bottom lip in attempt to focus on the conversation. Using the crook of his finger he tilted her face so he could meet her eyes.
"Oh? Is that all she said?" Her eyes darting slowly between the droplets on his chest, sounding less then smooth about his comment.
Pulling her to her feet, he held her hands in his. "I'm sorry we haven't really spent any alone time together since that night." Letting out a heavy sigh, releasing one of his hands to scratch the back of his head.
"We've been busy. We haven't had time other then to sleep and work to do much else."
"We haven't even had a chance to celebrate the world's new freedom." The playful smirk on his lips, was one of the things about him that turned her on and that fact wasn't slipping her mind anytime soon.
Cupping the side of her face, he leaned down to kiss her. Hands trailing down her arms, pulling her to him. She bit her lip, tilting her head, as he left fiery kisses down her neck. Letting out a gasp as he gently bit the base of her neck. Letting the towel fall, her eyes gleamed with arousal that masked his own. Taking his hard member into her hand she stroked him, he let out a husky growl, that left goosebumps down her body. His hands glided over her body like hot melted butter. Grabbing hold of the straps of her dress, the soft material gently ripped from her body. Leaving her bare and fully exposed, all at the mercy of his touch. Grabbing her wrist, he quickly slammed his lips to hers. They'd be distant long enough, he wanted to take his time.
Moving his hands around her waist, sliding his fingers across her ass, scooping her up. Her legs wrapped around his waist, as he leaned her back against the bed. Hanging her legs just over the side, he knelt in from of her entrance. Sitting up on her elbows, she peered down at him. Not sure what he was going to do, as he caressed her thighs.
"Wha...?" Her question silenced as he slide his fingers over her slick wet folds. Any thoughts lost to the growing moans as he slide in his fingers. Feeling her grow wetter, as she squirmed in pleasure. Draping one of her legs over his shoulder, giving him better access. Placing his mouth over her hidden lips, pushing her to the edge of sanity with his tongue. She clawed at his shoulders. When he knew she was close to stepping off the edge, he withdrew his fingers, rubbing the outside of her thighs. Kissing her inner thighs, as she pouted.
Standing between her knees, he looked at her. Sweat gleaming off her forehead. Scooting further back on the bed. He crawled over her tiny silhouette, positioning himself at her tight sensitive gate. It had been days since they had been together this close. He wanted to take his time, spending every minute of their time alone together. Kissing her, as he leaned up, and settled onto his knees. Pulling her legs up so he knees hooked into the crook of his elbows. Never slowing his pace. Thrusting in her, moans of pleasure escaping her lips. He loved to watch her writhe at his touch, the way her face twisted with each thrust of pleasure. Gripping her thighs tighter to him as he drove deeper into her.
She watched him, hard muscles contracting with each movement, the sweat that made his skin glow, the beautiful sea of blue that were his eyes. He slowed his pace, lowering her legs slightly as he leaned over her again. She clawed his back, receiving a hiss in response. He picked up his pace again as he felt her walls clamp down around his cock. Hot ribbons filled her as they rocked the waves of each others orgasm. Both trying to catch their breath, as he pulled the covers over them. She settled into his side, laying her head on his chest. He brushed sweaty strands of hair off her forehead. Kissing her head, before gently stroking her back.
"I love you."
"I love you too."
"Gideon?"
"Hhmm?"
"Do you think we'd make good parents?"
"I think we'd make great parents someday."
Sitting up to lean on her shoulder to look at him, still draping her other arm over his chest. The smile that no one had seen in decades seemed now permanently etched into his face. The site of it made her heart flutter like the very first time she had seen him.
"Are you happy?
"How could I not be? I'm with the love of my life."
"And your mine." Smiling, she gave him a quick kiss on the lips. Why was telling him so hard? She took a deep breath, trying to calm her nerves as well as the billion possibilities that could play out running full speed through her mind.
"What are you thinking about?"
Before she could catch herself, the words flew from her mouth, Gideon quickly sat up to take it all in. Her anticipation, doubts, fears all spilling out like a flood of words. His eyes widened. The news wasn't something he had expected, but it was good news none-the-less. She paused as she took in his silence, the gears clearly turning in his mind. His stone like expression slowly cracked away as a huge smile crossed his face. Brushing the hair from her face and he cupped her face.
With that he lightly brushed his lips with hers at first, then kissing her with a brightness she didn't recognize. As if she were kissing him for the first time in the tower all over again. She pulled back slightly for, kissing his cheeks to his lips, only to find herself snuggled into the curve of his side.
"Terra will let me know for sure tomorrow. She's running tests."
"I'd be lying if I said I wasn't happy...I could very well be the happiest man alive."
"Stop fidgeting Keziah, you look fine."
"I may feel fine, it's just, do I really have to wear this dress?"
Keziah tugged the sweetheart neckline a tad bit higher. Tilting her head to the side as if the new angle would change anything. Sighing to herself yet out-loud at the that fabric did little to cover her newly acquired scars. Normally she'd be more then happy to show them, out in the open like a metal of honor.
"No, I just figured that you would be down for something that wasn't sweats or your armor."
"Yeah, it is nice to dress up every once in a while."
"I think you should be my new adviser."
"What? Seriously? Isn't that part of Gideon's title?"
"Yes, but when he becomes my husband, he loses that title in a way."
"Does he know this?"
"I decide who I want as my adviser. I don't need his permission, though I doubt he would disagree with me."
"Okay, but only because I'm your best friend."
Knowing she couldn't argue that fact. She settled for fidgeting with the fabric of her dress' hem line. Sending a playful glare in the queen's direction, only to receive one equally opposing eye roll. The loose dark curls cascading softly over her shoulders. Letting out a sigh as she rubbed her eyes, groaning at the now smudged eye makeup.
"Have you slept at all? Or is Gideon keeping you up all night?"
"As a matter of fact, I have slept just not well. With everything going on, you know, we've been to busy." Slightly pouting at herself in the mirror, gently cleaning up the smudges of the rose gold eye shadow.
"Please tell me you two will take a break from the chaos after the wedding."
"That's the plan. A short one but still one well deserved break."
"Has you mother come around?"
"No, she's tolerated my relationship, but she is far from ever approving."
"Is that why its currently happening after she leaves?"
"Yeah, but I don't know if I want to wait til then."
"Aren't you afraid she'll cause a scene?"
"When doesn't she make a scene, I'm half hoping that she'll be more open once I tell her the news."
"Its no secret that your marring Gideon. What miracle news could possibly her come around...wait, are you?"
"Am I...um possibly pregnant?"
"Oh my God ! That's wonderful news! Have you told Gideon yet or am I the first...There is some much..." Be fore going full on rambling she quickly shut up at the not so certain look on Sonora. Taking a seat next to her, keeping quiet to let her friend speak.
"Lets not start knitting little winged sweaters and booties ,I'm not 100% sure just yet."
"When do you find out?"
"Terra is helping me with that. She's running tests, and she should be meeting us here shortly."
"She seems to be settling in well around here."
"Yeah, like most of us, she's been through a lot."
"Do you think she'll stick around."
"I don't think so, and I don't think she should."
"Adam has never been one to stay in one place for long."
"Exactly."
Sharing a knowing laugh between them, before long Sonora's long awaited news, Terra had arrived. Letting her in, she looked tired but not out of sorts. Setting down the books from the Cathedral's library she borrowed on the vanity. Helping herself to a glass of water as she sat down to join the conversation.
"Okay so I'm just going to just say it, please forgive me. I never did have much of a bed-side manner."
"Did you find out?"
"I had to do a little research because I was not aware just how different you all are from me."
"Gargoyle wise?"
"Exactly, even the simplest of differences were no where close to simple."
"Mortal women are pregnant for nine months, give or take a few weeks. Gargoyles on the other hand." Weighing her hands in front of her, trying to explain the huge difference between them. Both girls quietly nodding in understanding. "As for Gargoyles... I don't have much to go on."
"Have you checked the records? Surely someone other then Leonore has been pregnant."
"We can't ask my mother, she'd never tell, not even if it meant helping me."
"I'm sorry your mother is such a beast."
"I wonder how many of us were secret babies..." Keziah let her voice drop as she pondered the possibilities.
"So you can't tell me how long I would be pregnant for...or any of us for that matter."
"Not to mention, there really is no comparison for how slowly or how quickly you all age."
"Surprisingly enough neither have I. So what can you tell me?
Terra looked back and forth beyond the other two women. Not sure if telling Sonora her answer in front of Keziah. The last time they had spoken about it, Sonora had made it clear she didn't want anyone else to know.
"That was actually the easy part. The one thing I have figured out so far that was the same."
"What exactly?"
"That we basically reproduce the same way. We give birth to our children the same way. Other then the obvious Gargoyle difference, the gestation factor and aging whats complicated."
"And?"
"I may not be able to tell you what you'll be having, but I can confirm that you are."
"What do you mean by what?" The question was more of a statement. Keziah took it as an offensive term. Sonora quickly grabbed onto Keziah's wrist before she could stand. Terra clearly taking the hint.
"oh...OH! No, no I didn't mean like that. I meant if its going to be a boy or a girl. Clearly the baby will be a Gargoyle."
"Sorry Terra. I didn't understand." Looking slightly defeated, she leaned back.
"It's okay."
"Well shouldn't you two be congratulating me or something?"
After a few quick hugs, and after a few more questions. Terra made her promise that she'd be allowed to monitor her as long as time permitted. It would be a learning experience for both of them. She would also keep to the best of her ability notes and logs. She was surely not the first and she would not be the last. When the news is shared with the rest of the Order, shed have to make note that it isn't a secret they'd have to hide. She quietly pondered what the future might hold for her child.
Finding herself heading towards her mother's room, for the last time. She slid her hand down the wall as she walked, feeling the cool coarse stone under her fingers. Remembering all the times she walked these halls before her mother sent her away.
'If she stayed, would she still be with Gideon?'
'Would she be friends with Keziah?'
'Would she be different?'
'Could she have helped Adam?"
'Would the war still be in full force if she never returned?'
Hours ago she contemplated just what to say to her mother. Imagining storming in there and demanding answers. 'even a quick guilty feeling of using the news of her baby as leverage. She prayed it wouldn't come to that. Then again her mother has always been irritating and frustrating enough to cause even the most sinful thoughts. Mentally preparing herself for a fight, she knocked on her mother's door. Instead of waiting for an invite to come in, she let herself in. Instead of finding her mother getting ready for her ascension, she was welcomed with an empty room. In a split second, she found herself sitting at her mother's vanity. Not sure when her mother would return so she quickly looked around. Finding nothing in the vanity of any interest she headed for the bed side table. Finding nothing but her mother's bible she slammed the drawer shut. Muffled and almost unnoticed the sound of something falling to the floor. A small leather bound book, the leather worn to perfect softness. A delicate mark of the Order pressed into its cover. She surrendered to the curiosity of the secrets inside. Sitting on the edge of the bed, she cracked open the vault of her mother's deepest even darkest secrets.
–
'He wasn't part of the Order but I loved him. He gave his life for my secret, our secret. We were but children in this world. Teenagers at best. He was set to marry another, and I'm set to be queen. I had recently discovered my pregnancy, and even I couldn't tell him. If I told him I was carrying his child, he would have wanted to run away with me. We could raise our child away from the rules, away from the judging eyes of both our worlds. I couldn't. I couldn't run. I had a duty to my people and he to his. But God and the Angels only knew how much I loved him. How much he argued with me not too. I cried myself to sleep for months, even more so now as I can feel our baby grow and move inside me. I heard rumor that he married another. Less than a month after I turned him away. He died. He'll never know our baby. I will keep this secret til far after my own passing. Its just not my own secret to bear, it's his. I couldn't bear to hear details of how it happened. A demon wearing the shell of his own father-in law took his life from this world. From me.
–
Oh my Dear Rup. We have a daughter, she has your hair. Hair so dark it's little wisps of shadow. She is beautiful and so tiny. Her eyes like gray blue stone. I named her Sonora. Oh how I wish you could see her. She will do great things for our people. Her people. I received word that your wife, had given birth only months after we lost you. I heard it was a son. He was born early so he isn't much older then Sonora. I think it had something to do with what his mother witnessed.
–
With a heavy heart I had to send her away. I couldn't bare to face her any longer. I love her but this is what is best. She is still very young, so very adamant on staying but its not possible. Not now, not when she's far from ready to face this world. She's more and more like you every day. Willful, strong, and stubborn. She will return when its closer to her coronation. Our little Princess Sonora.
–
Skipping over pages, she read the passage Leonore wrote of the loss of her Adviser. Anaita. With each entry regarding her seemed to be harder to read. As if she could feel the pain of her mother's losses with each swirl of the ink.
–
We had a nasty attack on the cathedral tonight. How the demons manage to get in, so close I'll never know. Our numbers fell tonight. Taking Anaita down with it. Her poor boy. He'd never know his mother was the one who helped me bring my daughter into this world. The only person who knew my secret. I will look after her son, Gideon. Having lost both his parents at such a young age has left him angry at the world. I don't blame him. His mother was my truest friend. He has her eyes, even her hair color. By the Angel I miss her. I miss her voice, her voice of reason.
–
Gideon has shown great promise in his training. Showing far more potential then any of the others his age. I recently appointed him as my Adviser. Not because I trust him but so I can keep an eye on him. I just...I fear his anger may be his fuel. When it comes to demons he is vicious. I pray for him and I know his parents watch over him from heaven. He isn't much older then my own daughter. But part of me is relieved she isn't around.
–
Frankenstein's creature was brought in by one of the Patrols. I have given him the name of Adam. His maker was not God but he still walks this earth. He has promised to keep the secret of his world and ours from the humans. I pray I have not made a mistake. Gideon would be far to happy to see the creature destroyed.
–
I heard word that the half brother to my daughter had died. Why I'm just now hearing about it so many years later, I don't know. They said he was very weak and ill from birth. His mother so intent on bringing him back she refused to mourn, has even sought out dark magic in hopes of bringing him back... My heart breaks for her. I can't imagine that pain. The pain of losing a child is one I wish to never feel. He was sixteen, but rumors have also gone around that his mother some how succeeded in bringing him back. He married and had kids of his own before passing again.
–
Sonora is returning soon. I have missed so much of her growing up, but I know she was taken care of. The Order members from London have announced she'll be arriving soon. They have groomed her well. Trained her in fighting as well as preparing her for her coronation. If history dares to repeat itself after I'm gone, I'm happy she will be able to defend herself. If she is anything like myself and her father, she will not go down without a fight.
–
I can't believe her. She went a messed with the laws of the Order. Laws I worked hard to uphold. So much I gave up for one little girl just to have her destroy it. Laws that have protected us for millennium. How did she discover the Clave? I hope its the only secret she has discovered. But why?
It has to be because of him. He has been distracted recently, even more so now with the demons increasing there numbers. I pray that my own daughter won't be the end of us all.
–
He locked her in the vault and came after me anyways. I didn't correct the demon for a reason. To protect my daughter. She is the spiritual leader, a role I no longer carry. If them killing me kept her safe then so be it. I would have ascended with no regrets. Now they have that damned journal, what have they done...
–
Gideon and Adam came back victorious. Descending Naberius back to hell where he belongs. Yet the creature and his now human lover still remain among these walls. Ever so helpful. But what do they gain from remaining here.
–
She plans to marry him. Probably wait til after I'm gone. Their relationship infuriates my very soul to no end. I like how he wants to protect her but this has gone to far. I can't even think of when it started. I don't think I can even pray for their souls any longer. They broke laws. Changed or not. I told him to do his job. To protect her and only that. Not fall for her. Has even bestowed her with the only thing he has left of his mother. She wears it constantly. The sight of it pains me, and add in my daughter's attitude it angers me.
–
Unable to read anymore she dropped the book to the floor. Tears streaked her face as she stood to collect the book. In came her mother. Frozen in place by the site of her tear streaked face of her daughter. Holding the very book she hoped would never be read while she was around to walk this earth.
"What are you doing in here?"
"Why mother, why didn't you tell me?"
"I couldn't. Any regret in keeping it from you died with your father."
"You never even told me I had a brother, some connection to my father."
"How do you think it would have played out if I had shown up in the middle of the night to show you to his wife?"
"I don't know. Maybe she would have understood if you just explained."
"Yes, I should have explained to a unstable woman. Oh by the dear I had a daughter by your husband. But don't worry it was before you two were ever together."
"Unstable?"
"She witnessed what her father did to your father. Her father killed him. Then her son was born sickly."
"I'm sorry, I guess your right. Can you at least tell me his name?"
"Can you promise to let the dead rest in peace?" All Sonora could do was nod. "His name was Rupert Blackthorn. He was a member of the Clave. This is our secret, one we must keep."
"He was a shadow-hunter? So what does that make me? A freak of hybrid nature?"
"He was, and he was good man. More angel then any other. It makes you very special."
"Why didn't you tell me about Gideon's mother?"
"Because you ask to many questions. She is not a subject I wish to discuss. She was my friend, my best friend."
"If you two were best friends. Why do you see me being with Gideon so wrong."
"Because love can get you killed."
"Or it can save me. Why can't you just be happy for me?"
"You can't blame me for being angry. You went behind my back. You both did."
"It's not like you've ever been the easiest to talk too, since ever."
"With as much as I've been through, can you really blame me."
"But I'm your daughter. I was gone for years and you haven't even tried to act like my mother since I've been back."
"I am sorry I haven't been the best mother. I only sent you away to protect you, and to free myself of the fact you remind me so much of your father."
"Why not let him live through me mother. Your going to be reunited with him soon, and I don't wish the time I have left with you to be like it has been."
"I can't make any promises."
"Can you at least try? If not for me then for my..."
Leonore's eyes grew to the size of saucers as she saw her daughter's hand resting over her stomach. Wiping tears with the other as she tried to put on a smile.
"I don't know what to say about this. That is my grandchild and I realized I'm in a battle I'll never win."
"I may never understand why you disapprove of me and him. I hope, no, I pray, you get over yourself. Your ascension is tonight."
With everything in order, Leonore's ascension went off without a single word from Leonore. Barely a whisper from her as she hugged her daughter good-bye. Barely a nod from Gideon, even after she whispered to him. "You better take care of them. Or all the gates and Angels in heaven will not be able to stop me."
Standing before the alter and the entire Order, she transformed for the last time and spread her wings. Like a praying angel of blinding light, she ascended. Leaving nothing but her scapular behind. Collecting the light blue and silver scapular, she gently folded it and handed it to Keziah. It would hang in remembrance next to all the member they've lost over the years.
With their wedding set for the next day. Sonora dove into the details about the last conversation with her mother. Gently squeezing Gideon's hand as it rested over her soon to be swelling belly. He kissed her forehead, then her cheek before lightly brushing his lips to hers.
"So what do you think we should name her?"
"How do you know it's a girl?"
"I just do." The playful smirk played on her lips and she ran her fingers through his hair.
"Wait that little girl you mentioned, the one from that last vision. Is ours?"
"I couldn't place her before, but her eyes. Almost glowing blue like yours."
He couldn't help the growing smile on his face, so he kissed her. Pulling her closer.
"I think we should call her, Omira."
"Well I think it's perfect."
A/N: Sorry but its a huge relief that I finally finished this. I can now bless you all with my Divergent eric/OC I have been working on. I hope to post that soon.
