Chapter 13: Round 1 part 2

"Bellsprout use Vine Whip," the blonde haired girl called.

Bellsprout was a Pokémon with a large yellow bell shaped head and a thin brown stalk and roots for a body and legs/feet. Halfway down its body were a pair of large green leaves. Bellsprout lifted one of its feet and two green vines shot out of the roots and lashed at a large blue Pokémon that resembled a Nidorino.

"Nidorina, the Poison Pin Pokémon and the evolved form of Nidoran. Nidorina is a pure Poison type Pokémon with the ability Poison Point. The female has a gentler temperament. IT emits ultrasonic cries that have the power to befuddle foes. When feeding its young it first chews the food into a paste then spits it out for the offspring."

Nidorina jumped backwards away from the lashing vines before launching a barrage of purple needles from the spines on its body. Bellsprout blocked the needles by releasing a swarm of leaves from the two on its body. Both Pokémon stood opposite each other panting, the battle had been going for quite a while with neither one getting more than the odd glancing blow against the other, it was clear if something didn't change the battle would be decided by which one had the greater stamina.

"Nidorina hit it with Hidden Power," Diana called.

Nidorina glowed and a ring of light blue balls of energy appeared spinning around Nidorina. Nidorina reared back and stamped its front paws on the ground causing the orbs to fly towards Bellsprout. Bellsprout tried to use its thin flexible body to dodge the orbs that flew at it but the orbs connected releasing small ice crystals into the air causing Bellsprout to cringe heavily.

"Hmm seems Nidorina's Hidden Power is Ice typed making it super effective against Bellsprout's Grass/Poison typing," Brett said as he watched from the sidelines running a hand along Nidoran 's, who he'd released to watch what her evolved form could do, back. "Jennifer's going to need to pull something big out of the bag to prevent Diana from winning. I don't think Bellsprout will survive another super effective attack."

"Sunny Day Bellsprout," Jennifer called.

Bellsprout's leaves began to glow yellow before a stream of light fired into the air from each leaf. High above the stadium the two beams merged and formed a ball of energy which began to glow bright as the sun.

"Well this is interesting," Arthur said. "Why would she call for Sunny Day? I mean sure Bellsprout's Chlorophyll ability will increase its speed in intense sunlight but what other benefit will it get, it can't use Fire type moves and she'll need more than extra speed to win this battle."

"I can think of one thing but surely it can't use it," Brett replied lightly stopping his petting of Nidoran.

"Now Growth," Jennifer called.

Bellsprout glowed with green energy and visibly grew in size becoming noticeably larger and stronger.

"This won't end well for Diana," Brett muttered pulling his sunglasses down his nose and watching over the top of them.

"Now Bellsprout finish this," Jennifer called.

Bellsprout reared its bell-shaped head back and a shining yellow ball of light formed in front of Bellsprout's mouth. Bellsprout threw its head forward and a large beam of sunlight erupted out of the ball of light and flew towards Nidorina.

"What the hell is that?" Peter exclaimed.

"Solar Beam, one of the most powerful Grass type moves, few are more powerful," Brett replied. "Normally it takes a while to charge but with Sunny Day in effect it can fire instantaneously. Add in Growth increasing its special attack, the boost of which was itself increased by Sunny Day even with Nidorina resisting the attack due to being a Poison type this will probably end the battle unless Diana can do something."

"I hope this works," Diana muttered as she watched the attack approach Nidorina knowing there was no way Nidorina would be able to dodge. "Nidorina use Protect!"

A glowing turquoise spherical force field appeared around Nidorina just in time for the Solar Beam to hit it. The two attacks clashed causing sparks to fly before the force field was swallowed up by the beam, completely blocking it from view.

The crowd and the other competitors were on the edge of its seats waiting for the beam to dissipate and see if the shield had held.

The beam cleared and the stars from the brightness of the attack left the spectators eyes it was to see Nidorina and Bellsprout standing opposite each other breathing hard. After a few seconds Nidorina dropped to its front left knee while Bellsprout dropped down partially onto its stem. Suddenly Bellsprout collapsed to the ground, a cloud of dust rising around it.

"Bellsprout is unable to battle; Nidorina is the winner, the battle goes to Diana from Pallet Town," the referee called.

Seeing its opponent defeated Nidorina smiled before collapsing to the ground.

"Well done Nidorina, take a well-earned rest," Diana said calling it back to its Pokéball before turning to Jennifer. "Good battle."

"You too," Jennifer replied. "Nice work with that Protect."

"That was pure luck actually," Diana replied. "We hadn't been able to get Protect to stay up yet in training. I figured Nidorina would be knocked out anyway so if Protect collapsed it wasn't that big a deal"

The two girls returned to their seats at the side of the stadium where Diana was congratulated by her friends. The four watched the rest of the day's battles intently, keeping an eye on who would cause the biggest challenge in future rounds and future tournaments.

The second day of the tournament opened with Arthur standing at one end if the battlefield facing his opponent a very short girl with long black hair called Rachael.

"The battle between Arthur from Pallet town and Rachael from Cinnabar Island will now begin," the referee called. "Trainers call out your Pokémon."

"Tauros you're up," Rachael called.

Out popped a tall bull with light brown fur and large grey horns. At the base of its neck was a dark brown mane and it had three tails with a tuft of black fur at the end.

"Tauros the Wild Bull Pokémon a pure Normal Type Pokémon with the ability Intimidate. When it is about to tackle, it whips its body repeatedly with its three long tails then charges at full speed. Once it takes aim at its foe it makes a headlong charge. It is famous for its violent nature. Tauros is one of the few known Pokémon to consist purely of males. The Intimidate ability lowers the opponents Attack when the Pokémon enters battle."

"Go Wartortle," Arthur called.

Out popped a dark blue tortoise the same size as Beedrill appeared, it had a large tail and ears covered in bluish white fur.

"Wartortle the Turtle Pokémon and the evolved form of Squirtle. Wartortle is a pure Water type Pokémon with the ability Torrent. When attacked this Pokémon will pull in its head but its tail will still stick out a little bit. It is said to live for 10,000 years. Its furry tail is popular as a symbol of longevity."

"Not quite the cute little turtle it once was," Diana commented making Brett and Peter smile in amusement.

"Tauros verses Wartortle; Begin!" the referee called.

"Wartortle use Water Pulse," Arthur called.

A blue sphere of energy appeared between Wartortle's hands which Wartortle then threw the sphere towards Tauros. Part way towards Tauros it exploded becoming a large wave of water which continued towards Tauros.

Tauros tried to dodge but the wave was too high and too wide for the bull Pokémon to avoid leaving it very wet but mostly unharmed.

"Tauros use Rage," Rachael called.

Tauros snorted then began to glow red and charged at Wartortle.

"Wartortle use withdraw," Arthur called in response.

Wartortle pulled its head and legs into its shell which glowed before Tauros rammed it at speed causing the shell to go flying backwards before crashing into the walls of the stadium. Once the shell hit the ground Wartortle popped back out looking none the worse for wear.

"Wartortle Water Gun," Arthur called.

Wartortle spat a high pressure stream of water from its mouth which hit Tauros before it could dodge. After being hit Tauros glowed red for a few seconds before returning to normal.

"What just happened? Why did Tauros glow red like it did before it used Rage?" Peter asked.

"When a Pokémon has used Rage and is hit by a move its attack is increased," Brett replied. "It was a good move for Rachael to start with, almost all of Tauros' moves are physical attacks which means any attacks Arthur scores on Tauros are going to strengthen the attacks Wartortle receives in turn."

"Not good," Arthur muttered having realised the same thing Brett had. "Wartortle use Rollout."

Wartortle pulled its head and limbs into its shell and its shell began to roll along the edge between the top and bottom halves of the shell. Wartortle rolled quickly towards Tauros who dropped his head, his horns glowing and charged at the incoming Wartortle. The two Pokémon clashed head on and flew backwards, with Tauros glowing red once more, before charging towards each other once more. The two Pokémon clashed twice more before stopping and simply standing opposite one another staring at each other.

"Wartortle and Tauros stare each other down like worthy rivals preparing to make the next move."

"Wartortle use Tackle," Arthur called.

"Tauros use Tackle as well," Rachael called.

"Tauros will win this contest," Brett commented as the two Pokémon charged at each other.

"How do you know?" Diana asked.

"Tauros is taller, about four times heavier physically stronger and higher attack stat," Brett replied. "Those alone would lead it to win a head to head charge like this add in the attack boosts given by Rage and it's even stronger."

"Good point, I hope Wartortle can stand this," Diana said.

The two Pokémon clashed and as Brett had predicted while both Pokémon were thrown backwards Wartortle was thrown much further back, sliding to a stop just in front of Arthur.

"Try Water Gun Wartortle," Arthur said.

Wartortle spat a stream of water which Tauros managed to sidestep but was then hit by it as Wartortle simply turned his head redirecting the stream.

"That was stupid," Rachael muttered. "Tauros use Shock Wave."

Tauros reared up on its hind legs and a yellow ball of electricity crackled to life between Tauros' horns before it slammed its feet on the ground and two arcs shot out of the ball and honed in on Wartortle who tried to use a Water Gun aimed at the ground to dodge the attack but the two arcs followed it into the air. The two arcs struck Wartortle who cringed harshly as he was electrocuted. Wartortle landed on the ground and hunched over in exhaustion, the Shock Wave had dealt a lot of damage and he couldn't last much longer.

"Wartortle use Water Pulse followed by Water Gun," Arthur instructed.

Wartortle threw another blue sphere which was quickly struck from behind by a blast of water and accelerated towards Tauros at high speed where the sphere exploded in Tauros' face before the wave that came out of the sphere washed Tauros backwards and knocked it onto its side. Arthur took the chance to have Wartortle hit Tauros with Rollout several times before Tauros was able to get back to its feet.

Both Pokémon showed their exhaustion as they stared each other down while panting heavily but determined to win. Both trainers stared hard at the Pokémon both just as determined to win as their Pokémon.

"Use Tackle," both trainers called out.

The two Pokémon ran towards each other as fast as they could before launching themselves head first towards the other. The two Pokémon clashed and were thrown backwards, both sliding along the ground before coming to a stop. The two stared at each other before both collapsed to the ground. The whole crowd leant forward in their seat to see which Pokémon would be declared the winner.

"The result is too close to call," The referee announced. "Video footage will have to be analysed to determine the winner."

Both trainers returned their Pokémon and congratulated each other and returned to the sidelines as the next battle started. A Mankey and a Pikachu battled it out with the Mankey taking an easy win. Soon it was the final match of the day and a tall black haired boy called Nathan was battling with a Nidorino against a blonde girl and her Onix. The battle ended quickly as the Nidorino knocked out the Onix in only a few hits before Nathan returned it and walked out with a smug look on his face. Brett narrowed his eyes as he watched Nathan leave the stadium.

Brett recognised the arrogance in the look in Nathan's eyes. He'd seen it a number of times in the eyes of Paul one of the trainers that had left Pallet Town the year before. Paul was a highly arrogant person who believed he was better at everything than he really was. He was always angered that Brett repeatedly proved himself to be better than Paul at things despite being younger than him. Brett was sure Paul's arrogance would only have increased since he won the previous Indigo League Championship and had made it an impressive way through the Kanto Elite Four only being beaten by the leader and Kanto regional Champion Lance. Brett was also sure though that the only reason Paul had been able to win the tournament was that Mitchell hadn't competed for some reason. As Nathan left the stadium Brett made a silent promise that he'd knock that smug smile off his face.

Two days later the final battle of the first round was about to take place and Peter stood opposite a very short boy with short cut blonde hair called Sam. Both trainers held Pokeball in their hands and were waiting for the referee to begin the battle.

On the sidelines Arthur sat nervously next to his friends, it had been two days and there had still been no announcement on who had won his match against Rachael. His friends told him he shouldn't worry, he and Wartortle had done the best they could and that was all that should matter but he couldn't help but feel he'd have let his partner down if it turned out they lost. He was snapped out of his thoughts when the referee started the match and Peter and his opponent threw their Pokeball.

"Beedrill you're up," Peter called.

"Clefairy go," Sam called.

The two Pokémon appeared and the referee began the battle. Peter had Beedrill start with a Poison Sting attack which was blocked by a multitude of glowing green leaves which intercepted it.

"And Beedrill's Poison Sting is neatly intercepted by Clefairy's Magical Leaf attack. Nice counter there by Sam."

"Double Slap Clefairy," Sam called out.

Clefairy jumped at Beedrill in an attempt to slap it but Beedrill simply used its wings to evade the attack before launching another Poison Sting which wasn't blocked this time. The Poison Sting attack forced Clefairy backwards before it jumped into the air again and launched a Magical Leaf attack which Beedrill was unable to dodge. Beedrill launched a few more Poison Sting attacks which Clefairy easily dodged by jumping about.

"Alright we need to slow this thing down," Peter muttered to himself. "Beedrill use String Shot."

Beedrill shot a line of silk out of its mouth trying to hit Clefairy and tangle it up but Clefairy managed to get out of the way of the sting as Sam smiled.

"Clefairy use Encore," Sam called.

Clefairy raised its hands and a white orb of energy formed between them which Clefairy then threw at Beedrill. When the orb hit Beedrill it exploded and Beedrill's body began to sparkle white.

"Beedrill use Aerial Ace," Peter called confused as to what the last attack had done.

Beedrill responded to the attack by spitting out another stream of silk which was once more dodged.

"Clefairy's Encore is currently preventing Beedrill from using any move but the one that was used just before it was hit by the Encore. It looks like Peter is going to have to wait a while before he can attack again."

"We'll see about that," Peter said to himself. "Beedrill fly to the right then use String Shot."

Beedrill fired another shot of silk which went nowhere near Clefairy which confused Sam but made Peter smile. This repeated for a number of minutes as Beedrill continued to fire String Shot attacks which landed nowhere near Clefairy while dodging return attacks some of which managed to hit. Finally the sparkles on Beedrill's body disappeared signalling that Encore's effect had ended. Seeing this Peter smiled and his eye's darted to the field before turning back to Beedrill.

"String Shot, one last time Beedrill," Peter called watching as Beedrill fired the string which once more missed, this time hitting one of the previous shot's fired. "Now pull!"

Beedrill pulled back on the shot it had just fired causing the string it had hit to be pulled up as well setting off a chain reaction. Before Sam or Clefairy could react the String Shot's had formed into a large sticky net trapping Clefairy in place with very little room to move inside.

"Hey what do you know, that actually worked," Peter said in surprise causing his friends to slump in their seats having heard. "Beedrill hit it with Aerial Ace."

Beedrill dived at Clefairy sending it and the web net it was in flying, the minute hairs on Beedrill's body preventing it from being stuck to its own webbing. After being hit for a second time Clefairy made an attempt to dodge the third Aerial Ace Beedrill launched and was able to make Beedrill pull out of the attack by using Sing to try to put Beedrill to sleep. This made Sam realise that while limited Clefairy's options weren't non-existent. Sam had Clefairy dodge the next few attacks using the same tactic while occasionally using a Pound attack to deal some damage to Beedrill while trying to come up with a plan. Peter knew that he needed to end the battle before Sam could come up with a way to break out of the net.

"Beedrill use Double Team," Peter called. "Then use Aerial Ace."

Beedrill's body glowed white before multiple clones appeared surrounding Clefairy and its web prison. The clones all dived at Clefairy at once causing the little fairy Pokémon to spin around trying to work out which was the real Beedrill and which ones were the intangible copies. The first few Beedrill passed through Clefairy harmlessly and flickered out of existence before the real one struck Clefairy from behind sending Clefairy tumbling across the field. After waiting to see if Clefairy would be able to continue battling the referee called the battle over and awarded Peter the win. Both trainers returned their Pokémon and shook hands congratulating each other.

Once the two trainers had returned to the sides of the battlefield Bob and Jeff announced that the 32 remaining trainers would be paired up at random for their second round matches the next day before the round started. After this announcement the trainers headed out of the stadium, some to return to the Pokémon Center, some to the routes out of town to train for the next round or to continue their journey's. Brett returned to his room in the Pokémon Center to run through his Pokémon on his Pokédex and decide which two Pokémon he'd use in the next round. A quarter of an hour later Brett made a quick switch with Professor Oak Brett walked out to the battle arena behind the Pokémon Center with two Poké Balls ready to train for the next round.

There we have it the latest chapter.

And before anyone complains, yes i know the end of Arthur's battle was an arse pull but i honestly couldn't decide whether he should win or not and this gave me more time to decide, though i am leaning towards him winning this one.

Once more i hoped you enjoyed it. Shadow out.
