Putting the Pieces Together
Ever since they overheard what Wes said to Kurt the evening of Jeff and Brittany's reception, it had them thinking quite a bit. While it clearly opened up the lines of communication more between them, Blaine couldn't stop wondering how Wes put everything together. He'd replayed so many of the conversations he'd ever had with Wes, yet still didn't know what he said for him to figure it out. After a week of watching Blaine rack his brain over it, Sebastian told him to call Wes to see if it was possible for them to talk in person. At first Blaine questioned why it needed to be in person, but Sebastian told him that something of this nature needed to be done face to face. With Wes being so busy, it was agreed upon that Blaine and Sebastian would head to Boston the following weekend.
When Wes came home from the hospital on Friday night, he wasn't surprised to find Hailey in the guest room putting fresh sheets on the bed. "You know, they wouldn't have thought twice about the lavender sheets since they fit the room." Wes said to her as he leaned against the door frame, looking exhausted after a long shift.
"For your information, I hadn't put new ones on since your brother left as I'd been so busy." Hailey replied while reaching for a pillowcase. "You know me, I rotate them constantly."
"I know, I was only teasing you." Wes told her as he crossed his arms over his chest. "Remember, you don't have to make a fuss over them coming tomorrow, they wouldn't want that."
"I'm not fussing, honest." Hailey said in response before placing the pillows on the bed. "I only want them to be comfortable while they're here." While she spoke, he ran his fingers through his hair before crossing his arms once again. "Wes, what's going on?" When he leaned his head against the frame, she slowly walked towards him.
"Remember how I told you that I had a few choice words with Kurt during Jeff and Brittany's reception?" Hailey nodded. "Well, I happened to say something that Blaine and Sebastian overheard and it wasn't something I ever meant for them to hear."
"Are you going to tell me what you said or do I have to persuade you to confide in me?" The way she responded brought a smile to Wes's face as she placed a hand over his arms.
"I'll tell you, but you know I'd never object to your personal form of persuasion." Hailey smiled up at him before moving her hand to one of his and guiding him towards their bedroom knowing he wanted to change. After he pulled the top of his scrubs off and tossed it into the hamper, Hailey sat down on their bed. "Not going to help?"
"I was considering joining you in the shower after we talked. Do you mind?"
"You know I don't." Wes replied before he finished changing and slipped into a pair of sweats before joining Hailey on the bed. "What I'm going to tell you needs to stay between us, alright?" Hailey nodded as she turned so they were face to face. Once he began to talk, he took ahold of her hands as he could see how shocked she was hearing what he was telling him. By the time he finished, Hailey could only blink her eyes. "Now you know why I never planned on them hearing."
"Are you sure you're correct, I mean, while all the facts fit, I…"
"Yes, as Kurt confirmed it." Wes said to her. "Now you know why I never planned on letting Blaine know what I believed."
"Yea, no one wants to believe their first time happened for the wrong reasons." Hailey replied. "Then once you factor in how much of a romantic Blaine is, I would've done the same thing. Do you know how he and Sebastian took the news?"
"Blaine really hasn't gotten into detail about it, but considering the kiss I saw shortly afterwards and how they behaved, they're okay." Wes told her. "Hell, Kurt freaked out with the way they were kissing."
"They were rather affectionate with one another that evening."
"That they were, and I have a feeling part of it stemmed from what they heard. Yet, until I talk with them, it's purely conjecture." It wasn't long after that did Wes stand and Hailey was swift to follow as with the crazy hours that he'd been working, they made the most of the time they had together.
Knowing they had approximately a five hour drive ahead of them, Blaine and Sebastian were up and on the road before the sun came up so they could maximize their time with Wes and Hailey. With as early as they left, Blaine decided to call Wes when they were about an hour out to make sure he and Hailey were up. "So, was he up?" Sebastian asked as he looked over at Blaine once he set his phone down.
"Yes, he's up as is Hailey as I could hear her in the background." Blaine replied. "By the way, we're not going to stop again as Hailey is making breakfast."
"She didn't need to do that."
"I know that, as did Wes but she said what was the point of simply cooking for the two of them when we'd be arriving shortly." Blaine told him. "Not to mention, it would give the four of us time to talk before things shift and we get into the reason for our visit."
"That means he got your text last night, which he didn't respond to about when we were planning to leave." Sebastian said before a smirk crept to his face and a laugh escaped him. "I have a feeling my guess as to why was correct."
"I'd say you're right since he rarely doesn't get back to someone." Blaine replied before placing his hand over Sebastian's which was resting on the gear shift. "Considering the crazy shifts he's been working, it's not surprising. Plus, it's not as though they've been shy about wanting a family."
"Exactly! It's not only pleasurable, but there's a purpose behind it." Sebastian stated before glancing at Blaine and smiling. "Are you ready to get your answers B?"
"I am. I mean, I'd always had a feeling in the back of my mind that he had other reasons behind changing his mind. Yet at that point, I really didn't care." Blaine told him. "Now though, I wish I hadn't ignored them and questioned him more. While I was happy it had happened, it wasn't exactly what I imagined nor did it get much better. It certainly changed my perspective in a way about what I thought it was supposed to be like."
"And then, we got together and everything you thought, changed."
"It most certainly did." Blaine said in response. "The difference being, what happened between us happened for the right reasons and went beyond carnal desire." Those words brought a smile to Sebastian's face as he still remembered their first time rather vividly. Up until their first time together, Sebastian had always believed those that waxed poetically over their first time were over exaggerating. Yet, his first time together with Blaine put things into perspective for him and how special being with the one you love is.
Once they pulled into the driveway, Sebastian wasn't surprised in the slightest to see the two of them sitting on the front porch waiting for them. After grabbing their bags, they made their way towards the door and were met on the way by Wes and Hailey. "Not quite the circumstances we imagined your next visit." Wes said to Blaine as they made their way inside, following just behind Sebastian and Hailey. "But we're happy to see you regardless."
"We're glad you were able to see us." Blaine replied. "Like the two of you, Bas and I wish it was under other circumstances as well. I keep playing that whole night over in my head, and I can't make heads or tails of it."
"Well, after we eat we can talk all about it." Wes told him. "Hailey made me promise that the conversation wait till after we eat. Last thing any of us need is to be upset or frustrated before doing so."
"Bas mentioned something similar once I told him Hailey was cooking. Told me there is no reason to start this visit off discussing you know who and what he did." Once he spoke, Wes laughed which didn't surprise Blaine in the slightest. "Could you tell me one thing though?"
"Sure, depending on what it is?"
"That it took more than our conversations for you to deduce what you did."
"It did." The words were leaving Wes's mouth when they rounded into the kitchen where Sebastian was already pouring cups for coffee for them. From that moment, the tone of the visit changed a bit and the four began to catch up. Needless to say, all of their lives were crazy with everything they had going on along with what was going to be happening in a matter of months. And there was no way Hailey wasn't going to let their visit go by without trying to get some information out of them about their upcoming nuptials. Plus talking about their wedding, was a good distraction from the actually reason behind their visit.
Once breakfast was done, Sebastian told Hailey he'd help her clean-up from breakfast as he knew Blaine needed to start this conversation with Wes with no one else around. After the two stepped outside onto the deck, Hailey took ahold of Sebastian's hand as he watched. "Wes told me what's going on; it's going to be okay Seb." Her words brought his attention off of Blaine and down to her. "You know Wes, he has a way of wording things to take the sting out of a situation."
"I know, but a part of me hates that I was the reason behind it."
"Seb, his insecurities fueled it, not you." Hailey reassured him. "Sure, from what I've been told you flirted relentlessly with Blaine, not that I blame you." The soft smile she met him with, brought a smile to his face. "He should've been secure in what Blaine felt for him, to trust what he said."
"Clearly he didn't."
"That's not on you Seb, that's all on him. You do know Wes; wishes the two of you hadn't overheard him."
"We do, yet according to B, hearing him say it reaffirmed doubts he had back then about him changing his mind. He feels stupid Hailey, and I hate that."
"I know you do, but I have a feeling once they're done talking, Blaine won't feel that way anymore. In that moment, Blaine never would've believed Kurt would've used such a moment to hang onto him. It's not until one's able to look back that they are able to see things more clearly."
"Ain't that the truth?" After he spoke, Hailey pressed a kiss to Sebastian's bicep which had him close his eyes. "I love him so much Hailey."
"I know that, as does Blaine. Once he gets answers from Wes, the two of you can truly put that moment behind you and look to the future."
While the two of them were finishing up their conversation indoors, Wes and Blaine were sitting out on the deck. "Before we get started, I want you to know that you finding out the way you did is the last thing I wanted." Wes said to him as he looked across at him. "Though, the reaction from your ex was worth it as he was utterly disgusted to see you and Seb kissing the way you did afterwards." A faint blush crept to Blaine's cheeks as he remembered that kiss all too well.
"That kiss almost didn't happen as Bas was mortified by what he heard." Blaine told him. "He almost walked away from me. It's not too often things strike a chord with him like that, yet he felt as though is pursuit of me cheated me of something special."
"Care to tell me how you remedied that?"
"I told him that he wasn't to blame." Blaine replied. "And that while he wasn't my metaphorical first, it was the first that matters the most to me. While I'm clearly simplifying it right now, what I said spurred that kiss. Now it's your turn to tell me how you figured it all out."
"Well, you're well aware that I spoke with David and Thad quite a bit after I graduated." Blaine nodded his head in response. "Those conversations covered everything from running the council to keeping me up to date on the goings on around school. Needless to say, the day you came to invite them all to your show was a memorable one."
"It was for me as well, for numerous reasons."
"Put it this way Blaine, everyone in that room noticed your reaction to Seb." His words caused Blaine to blush once again. "There is nothing wrong with being attracted to someone."
"I know, I guess I didn't realize it was obvious."
"It was. You also made Seb's day as he'd been so eager to meet you given everything the guys had told him about you." Wes said to him. "From that moment, any little moment between the two of you got back to me. More than a few of the guys hoped that Seb would be able to get you away from Kurt, as they hoped it would get you back to Dalton, and them."
"I never meant to hurt them Wes."
"I know that as do they. Just as while they wanted you happy, but didn't really see that when you were with Kurt. David commented numerous times that you seemed to have lost that spark, yet if Seb was around it reared it's head. So while it was self-serving on their part, they hoped you'd succumb to Seb's charm."
"He is quite charming, isn't he?"
"He is, and knows how to use it." Wes told him in a non-judgmental way. "The first time you spoke about him, I could tell you he'd stirred something inside of you. Yet, it wasn't enough at that point for you to end things with Kurt. While Seb never denied his interest in you, you let him know where you stood and forged a friendship with him."
"A friendship that Kurt hated."
"Blaine, I told you numerous times back then that simply because you were in a relationship, it didn't give Kurt the right to tell you who you could be friends with. The only reason he didn't want Seb around you, is he was intimidated by him. Seb is a confident, alpha male who also happens to be gay."
"Essentially, Kurt's worst nightmare."
"Yes, and he also had set his sights on you. Knowing Seb was confident in who he was, and what you'd said about the lack of movement in your relationship, Seb's mere presence was an issue for Kurt. Even though you'd reassured him you were okay with waiting, clearly he didn't believe you."
"No kidding." Blaine told him. "Did I ever tell you about the way he reacted when I mentioned masturbation to him?"
"You said he looked as though he was going to be sick."
"Yep, yet only a short time afterwards he was okay with sex. How did I not see it?"
"Because you choose to see the best in people Blaine, so you never imagined he'd use something so special against you. Think, seeing the best is what allowed you to be friends with Seb, you saw passed his pursuit of you."
"While the flirting never stopped, and I've got to admit, I didn't mind." Blaine told him. "We truly developed one hell of a friendship."
"I know, just as Kurt was aware of it and it frightened him. Nothing you could say at that point, would've change that."
"Fair enough, as that's something I'm aware of, but how did you put it all together?"
"It was lots of little pieces from different conversations." Wes replied. "I was well aware that the Warblers were in the audience that evening. Just as I know Seb didn't go backstage to see you as he didn't want to ruin your moment." That caused Blaine to tilt his head to the side. "Thad and Nick each told me they tried to get him to come back, but he refused. In that moment, they could see that you meant more to him that a simple conquest. The guys said you were practically beaming backstage, yet..." Wes paused and proceeded to get up and lean against the deck railing. "They couldn't shake the feeling that they were getting stared at by Kurt, that he was…looking beyond them in a sense."
"He was looking for Bas."
"That's my belief, yes as he saw him sitting in the audience with the others. Having him there, supporting you on your big night was too much for him to take."
"Yet he didn't even tell me he was there."
"It didn't matter at that point Blaine. Looking back, it's so clear that I wish I had figured it out sooner. If I had, I probably would've said something to you. I didn't truly put it all together till after you and Seb were together. The way Kurt got so possessive; it put his behavior in a new perspective."
"And he felt that by giving me something he knew I wanted would stop me from leaving." Blaine said before running a hand through his curls. "I wouldn't have left over that."
"I know that, but clearly he didn't. He didn't know you Blaine, regardless of what he said. He believed that you'd get frustrated and it would send you into Seb's waiting arms." Wes told him. "While this all seems like a lot, hell it was only a theory until Kurt admitted my thoughts were correct."
"You were simply trying to provoke him, weren't you?"
"I was, as I was sick and tired of his behavior towards you and Seb." Wes said to him. "Little did I expect such a response. My heart honestly sank Blaine as I know; you believed it happened for the right reason."
"Hard to believe a guy actually wanted to wait to have sex for the right reason."
"It's not, hell, I still remember my first time and would've been pissed if it happened as a way to manipulate me. It speaks to the type of person he was to use something he knew meant something to you."
"If you had told me then, everything I know now about him I wouldn't have believed it."
"None of us would believe it Blaine considering the person we first met. Little would we imagine he'd become such a manipulator."
"Such, he was one." Blaine stated and the frustration was evident in his voice. "He was everything he judged others for being. How did I not freaking see it?"
"You were young, and in love."
"Or so I thought I was." By this point, Blaine had gotten up and was beginning to pace the deck. "How could I have been so naïve Wes?"
"You weren't being naïve Blaine."
"Wes, I was as I didn't see what was happening right in front of me."
"Blaine, when we're directly involved, we rarely see what's right before us. Plus with you seeing the best in people…"
"It's easy to pull one over on me." Blaine said, interrupting him.
"It would happen to anyone as we trust those close to us. I'd never expect anyone close to me to do something like that, so why should you?" Blaine merely looked out into the yard after Wes spoke, causing Wes to come up behind him and place a hand on his back. "Don't beat yourself up over this Blaine; none of this was your fault."
"That's easy for you to say."
"It's easy to say, because it's the truth. Getting upset or frustrated isn't going to change the fact that it happened." Wes told him. "Was it the way you wished it happened, of course not, but it did and you can't change it. What you need to focus on Blaine, is what you have now and what you share with Seb. With everything I ever heard about him, I wasn't sure what to expect when I met him the first time." Those words caused Blaine to laugh a bit. "It's true. Did he live up to everything I heard, yes, he did. The one thing I didn't expect is the person he is around you. God Blaine, he loves you so much and there isn't anything he wouldn't do for you."
"I know. While he's clearly mellowed, he's still very much him and I'd never want for that to change." Blaine said to him. "I hate that he feels bad about this."
"He feels bad, because he loves you and can't bear the thought that his presence in your life robbed you of something special."
"I don't blame him, I told him that."
"Yet we always want to protect the ones we love. You're no different Blaine as you'd be feeling the same way he is if the roles were reversed. Call it a hunch, but I have a feeling you'll be able to make him feel better."
"You did not just say that." Blaine said as he turned to look at him.
"I did, though the extent of making him feel better is up to you." Once Blaine bit his lower lip, Wes laughed. "Come now, it's rare I get a chance to tease you since the others are so quick to jump in."
"They do get quite the joy out of it, don't they?"
"They do." Wes told him with a smile. "Now, how about we go save that fiancé of yours from my wife who is probably talking his ear off?"
"That sounds like a good idea, though I doubt Bas is complaining as he likes spending time with Hailey."
"She likes spending time with him too, as well as you. It's rare that the four of us get to spend time together without anyone else."
"True, we're going to have to get better about that."
"We will. I have a feeling once everything settles down around us, it'll get easier. Next time we do so, hopefully it's for a better reason."
"Agreed." After Blaine responded, the two turned around and headed inside so that the four of them could enjoy the rest of their weekend together.
