I jerked back in surprise and his eyes widened.
"I'm sorry, now's not the time for that," he said softly.
"You have no idea how much I needed that," I murmured.
"Why?"
"Jacob, you're blind," I said a little harshly.
He looked like I'd hurt him as he backed up.
"Why?" he repeated.
"Ever since I met you, I've felt something for you, over time I've grown to love you," I explained.
"But Paul-"
"I liked Paul, a lot, but I never fell in love with him, he and I were using each other," I said, "I was using him to feel wanted, because I couldn't have you. I don't know, it's hard to explain."
"So you went to him why?"
"Because you were going after Bella, I came into the situation where you were in love with her," I replied, "So I stayed back, pursued my own prospect, afraid that I'd never have you."
"I should never have ignored the imprint," he said, "It's sad that it took you being hurt for me to realize how important you were to me."
"Yeah, you shouldn't have," I said, teasing slightly.
He gave me a half smile and I reached out, His hands grasped mine and felt a little bit of the sadness going away. I was still devastated about my baby, but at least I knew I had a good support system.
"Jacob, this is the second baby I've lost due to him," I whispered.
"What?" he asked.
I looked up at him and realized he was only ever told half of the story.
"When I was with him, he raped me, got me pregnant, and killed the baby," I explained.
Anger crossed his features and I squeezed his hands to calm him down.
"I want him dead, can we do that?"
"Yes, but it might be hard, there were five other vampires with him, and we don't know how many more he has," he said.
"I'm ready, I'll fight to give my babies peace, know they got vengeance," I whispered.
"You won't fight," he said sternly.
"Yes, I will, Jacob, I'm not pregnant any longer, and I'll be one more pair of helping hands," I explained.
"No," another voice said.
I looked up and saw Paul. I knew pain was readable in my features by the regret on his face.
"I'm sorry Nai," he whispered.
I nodded and swallowed thickly. The need to cry crawled up my throat again as he stepped forward.
"Where's Rachel?"
"At Jake's," he replied.
"Why aren't you with her?"
I may have sounded harsh but I was honestly curious. My understanding was nothing came before the imprint when you accepted it.
"You were hurt," he said, "Our baby was-"
He cut off and I saw his eyes glistening. I guess he really was a softie when he wanted to be. I motioned him over and he sat by me and Jacob.
"Nai, I'm so sorry I let you go," he said softly, "If I could go back and change it, I would."
"No you wouldn't, because then you wouldn't have your imprint," I said.
"To save our baby, I would delay the imprint," he barked.
I flinched but nodded.
"Okay, I believe you," I whispered.
"You have no idea how bad it's tearing me up inside Nai."
I let out a sigh.
"I know how you feel."
"I know," he replied.
Jacob's phone rang and he answered it, leaving the room in silence again.
"I'm sorry, I didn't want to hurt you," he said.
"You can't control imprinting," I responded, "I honestly wondered if it would happen."
"It's supposed to be rare."
"Doesn't seem like it," I snorted.
He nodded in agreement.
"It's become less rare with our generation."
"Maybe you all are moer accepting of it," I murmured.
"At least I didn't leave you empty handed, one good thing came of this."
"And what's that?" I asked.
"Jake and you," he replied, "You have a chance now, I know you loved him all along."
I winced.
"Yeah, I thought I hid it well."
"Not to me," he said.
There was a comfortable silence and I looked up to meet his beautiful eyes.
"Does this mean we can't be friends?"
"Of course not!" he said.
"Really? Because I'd miss your cockiness and your smart ass," I said with a soft chuckle.
"We're still friends, if you want."
"I do," I replied.
I looked back down at my hands as I thought about how much had happened since I had moved here a few short months ago. Then it hit me.
"Whoa."
"What?" Paul asked.
"I turn seventeen tomorrow," I said.
He looked surprised.
"You forgot your birthday?"
"With everything going on, I kind of got swept up in the new baby and everything, and then today happened, so it's not really been on the forefront of my mind."
"Well, when you're ready, we'll have a party, I bet Emily would love to make a cake for you," he said.
"Thanks, it might be a while," I hesitated, "Paul, when should we move my stuff out?"
"When you're ready," he said softly, "I just want you to be okay before we do anything major."
Suddenly a doctor entered.
"Hello Mrs. Swan, I'm Dr. Tidas," he said.
I shook his hand and he gave me a sad look.
"I'm sorry to report you lost the baby," he said, "The only good news is that you were early in the pregnancy so chances are it will be like a really heavy and painful period."
I nodded absentmindedly and put my hand to my belly. Another baby gone, due to Nicholas. When would he leave me alone?
When he's dead, a voice said in the back of my mind.
"Mrs. Swan?"
"Sorry, I'm kind of tired, what did you say?"
He gave me a sad smile.
"We will keep you for a few more hours due to the trauma to your stomach but if everything looks good you will go home then," he said.
"Thanks."
He gave a quick nod and left the room. Suddenly I was engulfed in arms.
"I wish I could change things," he whispered.
"Thank you Paul," I said, "But as I always say, things happen for a reason, right? It just wasn't meant to be."
He said nothing but held me tighter.
"Nai?" Bella called.
I jerked away and saw her face. She walked over and took my hand as Paul got up.
"How are you feeling?"
"I hurt, from everything."
She nodded.
"I'm here if you need to talk, or just cry," she whispered.
"Thank you."
Jacob re-entered the room and looked at Paul.
"Rachel wants you."
"I'm busy," Paul replied.
"You will not ignore my sister," Jacob said roughly, "I've got Nai, go see Rachel."
Paul gave me a look and I nodded. I had Jacob and my family, I would be fine, they were all I needed.

I let out a blood-curdling scream and shot up.
"Shh, shh, it's okay," Bella whispered.
I panted and stared at her, fearful for my life.
"He's here," I whispered.
"No, he's not, remember, the pack is patroling?" she asked.
I hesitated but nodded. I instantly felt bad for waking her up with my stupid dreams again. This was the third week in a row and we were all losing sleep from it.
"Go back to sleep," she murmured, slowly drifting off herself.
I heard a lonely howl from outside and softly got out of bed, as not to wake Bella again. I headed to the window and saw the russet wolf pacing outside.
"Jacob, I'm coming down," I whisper-yelled.
I grabbed a small blanket and hurried silently down the stairs, slipping out the front door just to see him standing there in his cut offs.
"Hey," he said softly.
I gave him a weak smile and ran to him, tackling him in a hug.
"Another nightmare?" he asked.
I nodded and he held me tighter.
"It'll go away soon," he whispered.
"Not until he's dead," I replied.
"Which will be soon," he promised.
"Can we talk about something else?" I asked.
He nodded and we walked to the hammock swing in the back yard. I sat down and pulled him with. The blanket was placed over both of us as I cuddled into his side. It was crazy how easily we had become comfortable with each other, as if it was meant to be. Which I suppose it was, due to the imprint.
"What's your favorite season?" I asked.
"Fall," he replied.
"Mine too!" I said happily.
There was a comfortable silence as his hand began rubbing my hair.
"Do you ever think the dreams will stop?" I whispered.
"Yes," he replied.
"Good, because I need my beauty sleep," I murmured.
His hand kept playing with my hair so softly I was soon falling asleep. I snuggled closer to him and laid my head on his chest. He was so warm in this cold air.
"Good night Nai," he whispered.
I tried to reply but sleep took over me.
