Chapter 14

Tris

My head is pounding when I see the sun, it's too bright. My head falls back to the source where it laid before. My pillow is hard, not soft like it usually is. My head turns to see what's wrong and I notice bare skin and black ink.

Tobias's rock hard abs worked as my pillow, and I sit up, but quickly hide back in the covers realizing that I am not wearing a top. Or pants for that matter. I squeak nervously as to how I am going to play this off.

He starts to move around, and I put my head under the covers. A bad mistake that was. "What did I do?" He mumbles to himself and my head pops out of the covers. He starts to move out of bed. "Ah damn, my head hurts." He starts to shake me, "Tris what happened last night?"

"Ah... shit Tobias." He stands in front of me, his eyes closed rubbing his face. "Pants, sir, you need pants."

He looks down, alarmed, and grabs the top sheet, he wraps it around his waist.

"Tris what did we do last night?" He hisses more urgent than before.

"I don't know, I don't remember." I hiss back, sitting up pulling the sheet up to cover myself. "All I remember is us talking, me telling you my secret."

"Did I tell you- nah. Did we use a condom-"

"It won't matter if we didn't."

"Yeah, right. I guess..." He rubs the back of his neck.

"Can you...uhh.. please get me a shirt?" I ask and he throws me his shirt that was lying on the floor. I sneak under covers and slip it on. Dammit I need underwear now and I'm not asking him to get that for me. I look on my side, nothing. Then I shift over to his side and find them at his feet.

I quickly grab them and go back under the covers. By the time that I come back up, he now has a pair of boxers on. "Okay we have to act like it didn't happen." I say slipping out to find more of my clothes.

"Agreed, we have bigger things to worry about other than last night, or this morning, or whenever that happened. Like we have to tell the kids about-"

"Dammit." I mumble, already knowing what he is going to say. I'm supposed to be pregnant. What am I going to do? I search around the room and find a pillow that will do the job for now. Until we can figure out what will work, and there's some duct tape on top of the dresser. Perfect.

We work quickly to clean up and get dressed, we don't want the kids coming in here at a time like this. Tobias hops in the shower and I had downstairs to eat something and take some Advil. Granger comes in and sits down on the stool in front of me. "Your up early."

"Mom it's 11 o'clock already. Of course I'm up, the day had already began. Aaralynn is over at Uriah's talking to Cassie."

"Oh."

His eyebrows scrunch together. "Christina want to go out to lunch with you. Apparently you two need to talk."

Oh great Christina probably heard about last night. "Did she says specifically what about?"

"No, but she looked kind of pissed off."

"Great." I mumble. "She's going to kill me."

I start to rub my forehead, because my headache is pounding harder than ever. "What happened last night Mom? I've never seen you that drunk. You both looked like you- never mind, you were just..."

"I had a drink Granger, sometimes when you are an adult you need one to cope with other adults."

"Well it looked like you and Dad were doing pretty well together." He hisses at me.

"Granger." I hiss back at him.

"What? You are going to end up doing that thing where you think you like him and right when someone talks about a commitment, you run like hell. Then you go and find someone who doesn't treat you well. I'm tired of seeing that happen to you."

"We are just friends Granger. We have to be friends now. There is not going to be a commitment between us."

"That's what you have always said, then commitment happens. Bam, we run like hell. I don't want things to be awkward between my father and I. We just started to finally get along."

"That's why nothing is going to get past the friend-zone." Starting now.

"Better not."

"If you wanted to know why I was drinking last night, it was because someone was bashing a person who can no longer have children-"

"And you felt insulted? Fair enough, I bet it's hard. I was lonely without Aaralynn for a while, but maybe when you find someone who will respect that side of you, then maybe you won't be lonely anymore."

I raise my eyebrows to that statement. "You think I am lonely?"

"Well yeah kind of. Whenever someone talks about having children and getting married, you find a wine bottle to make you feel better."

"Granger, I am not lonely, just sensitive to certain subjects. You are enough for me."

"Mom I graduate in two years, you won't have me forever."

"Then I'll have Uriah."

"Not if he finally decides to settle down."

I hate the times like this, right when he puts me in a corner and process me wrong. He's gotten good at it too. Both Uriah and his father do it. It's a heavy Dauntless trait that haunts the best of us. "Fine you win."

"Thank you."

Aaralynn comes into the house through the back door and sits in front of me. "What's going to be for lunch? I'm hungry."

"Whatever your father decides to make because I am going to go out with Christina."

"Like that?" She says. "No offense, but you are rocking that hangover look well."

"No I am waiting for my turn in the shower, but first we need to tell you guys something."

"Uhh oh." Aaralynn says.

"Didn't kids with normal families warn us about there's conversations?"

"Yeah those conversations that start off with. 'Kids we need to talk.' I've hoped that I won't ever encounter one of those."

I roll my eyes. It's kind of cute though. Acting like brother and sister, putting their heads together like twins.

"Well we aren't normal parents and this actually had something to do with being undercover." Tobias says coming into the room.

"Fine, what is it?" They say at the same time.

"Well..." I begin. "As of last night, thanks to the wind and a bunch of drunk women, I am fake pregnant."

They stare at me blankly, both Tobias and I stare back. "Wow, this is even better than what they warned us about." Granger states sarcastically, Aaralynn punches his arm.

"What? This is weird coming from you. Something I thought that I never hear. Too bad it's not real."

"Your right it's not." I cross my arms and angrily sigh.

"Mom, I'm sorry. It's just that-"

"Granger let it go."

"I have to get ready to go. Tobias can you please explain the rest?" I run of upstairs to go get ready to talk to Christina.

Tobias

Tris runs upstairs and Granger lays his head down on the counter. "That wasn't very nice to say." I say coldly to him.

"Yeah I know." He rubs his face. "I've gone almost my whole life wanting to hear something like that, and when I do it's not real. I know that you know that's a sensitive topic for her, buts it's also sensitive to me. So I am sorry that I didn't react well to that." He gets up and runs into the living room, stomping up the steps.

"Granger-"

"Not interested in talking to you." He calls back.

"What is that all about?" Aaralynn asks.

I look at her and sigh. I need a break, this is more stressful than work. "I might as well tell you. Aaralynn, your mother cannot have children anymore."

"Why not?"

"You know that story she told us the other day?" She nods. "Well she was also affected by that serum. It's a very sensitive topic with her and Granger, I guess."

"Oh I see."

I sigh as I start to find something for dinner, Aaralynn says that she's hungry but she's too lazy to make anything. I find some hamburger and decide to make hamburgers. It's pretty easy and I know how to grill.

At 12 Tris comes running downstairs with one of the pillows from upstairs tapped to her stomach. She tries to the tape to rip, but is struggling. She ends up turning in circles cause of it. "Here." I rip the tape, and hand her the roll.

"Thanks." She puts the scissors away in the drawer besides me, filling my nose with her sweet green apple scent. "There how do I look?"

"Like your supposed to be pregnant." And she does as soon as she puts her shirt down.

"Good. I'm going to take the truck and go meet Christina."

"And what's wrong with the car that they left here for us?"

"It's out of gas." She stars flatly.

"Fine," I hand her the keys. "Oh there is still some boxes in the back seat that I'll get out for you."

"Thanks." We walk out to the drive way where my baby is parked. Man she is a beautiful 4-door Chevy truck. The smooth chrome surface does her plenty of justice.

Bear comes up and hops on me. "Down Bear." He wags his tail and hops down. He brushes against Tris's leg and does circles around her.

"Hey Bear." She kneels in front of him and starts to pet him. She coo's at the dog, and then gets up scratching the back of his ears.

"Lucky dog, you get treated better than me." I say teasingly.

"Hey you got a treat yesterday that he does not get."

Valid point, but I ignore it and grab the box. "Okay you are ready to go." The box is heavy, and it's Aaralynn's.

"Geez that's a big box."

"Yep." I set it down, and she walks around it and wraps her arms around my neck. The hairs on it start to stand up, that's how much electricity is going through us.

"Okay we are going to sit here for a second and act like we are having a flirtatious conversation for a bit, then you are going to kiss me goodbye, because you, my husband, are supposed to love me."

Supposed to? I'm pretty sure that I never stopped loving her, and I admitted that to her yesterday. "I have to kiss you?" I ask teasingly.

"Yes."

"Is this a flirtatious enough conversation for you?"

"It will do."

"Okay." I sweep my head down and kiss her. The electricity is sparks and it hurts to pull away.

Wait? When did I start thinking that way? Tris was just the mother of our children last week to me. Yesterday changed that. Right when she asked me to help her with that damn dress, I couldn't stop thinking of that feeling I got from her. She's contagious. Geez Eaton, what happened?

Tris

The address that Christina sends me is five blocks from our neighborhood, but knowing her she'll want to go shopping to try to catch up. She sits by a window in a booth. "Just what I thought." She says as I sit down in front of her.

"I figured, that you heard."

"So how did it start?"

I shrug, "As most fake pregnancies start, with drunk women not judging the wind that's blowing."

The waiter sets water in front of both of us, we thank him and Christina pounces like a cat on the next subject.

"So you drank last night? Uriah says you only drink at the mention of something that happened to you a long time ago. He didn't tell me what that was, he said it was very personal."

"Yeah, I don't want to talk about it here. It's not a place to discuss it."

"Fair enough."

Christina grips her cup of water and stares at the table. "Now I wanted to have lunch to talk to you about Uriah."

"Uriah?" I raise an eyebrow and stare back at her.

"Well yeah...um had he been with anyone...in a serious relationship...since..."

"Well not really...no. He's dated a few times, been flirted with a lot but no one had ever been very serious. Uriah spends a lot of time alone, or with Granger at the ice rink."

"He's filled the role as Dad basically?"

"Yeah." I say softly.

"Have you two ever gone out?"

"No, we've acted as a married couple on a few cases...but...there was nothing between us so we're better off friends. What is this about?"

She shrugs and I squeal a bit. "Oh Chris do you like him?"

She kind of bangs her hands on the table, causing others to look at us. "Okay yes, I kind of do. He's changed since we were kids. He's changed a lot and so have I. I think that might really like him."

"Ah Christina! My little girl is growing up!"

"Shut up. You can't judge."

"I'm not."

"What's going on with you and Tobias? I see those looks that you give each when the other isn't looking. You two should work on being less obvious. Oh and those kisses that you give each other in the driveway. I can obviously see something is beginning between you two."

I feel my face get red. "Christina we are just friends, friends who are doing a really good job of being a married couple. Damn what did I do?"

"What did you do?" She asks curious.

"I don't want to say. It's bad." I shake my head.

"What did you do?" Her face lights up and she smiles evily. "You two slept together didn't you? Last night?"

I rest my head on the table. "Yes." The table muffels my words and hopefully she doesn't hear them.

"Oh my gosh you are sleeping with the father of your children and you aren't even married. Well your fake married. Now that's messed up."

I'm about to retort when she interrupts. "How was it?"

"Excuse me?"

"You heard me. I'm curious, I've heard Tory Tanners say it was the best sex of her life."

I don't want to answer that question, but she's looking at me. He eyes are boring into my soul. "Okay fine, it was good. Really good. Some of the best I had in a while."

She stars to laugh uncontrollably and she motions for me to get out of the booth. "Where are we going?" I hiss at her.

"We are going to go shopping. I'm not hungry and I need to pick up some clothes and maybe we can find you an actual fake stomach other than the pillow and duct tape you are using."

I check around myself, feeling exposed. "How can you tell?"

"Hey I figured. Was I right?"

"Yes."

"Perfect."

She pulls me into her car. Technically it's my car that Uriah and I share but she's driving it around. "Ugh what is that smell?"

"That's the smell of a clean vehicle, maybe if you clean yours you will experience it more often."

She pulls up in front of the mall and we get out in front of a maternity store. "A maternity store?"

"You are going to need clothes because you won't be able to where jeans forever and they probably have pretty of fake bellies that we can steal."

"Really to we have to but this stuff? It will never be used again."

"Donate it to a store when you get done. I'll even buy half if it makes you feel better."

"Fine." I huff and she drags me in.

Pregnant women, pregnant women everywhere. The store is hopping. Christina drags in the back and we search around. "Hello is there anything that I can get for you?" An old store worker says to us.

"Um...no thank you." I say.

"How far along?"

"Twenty-seven weeks."

"Ah the good ole days. You may want to go check out our third trimester section over there." She points over to the area next to this one and I feel my face get red.

"Thanks."

Christina and I head over there and stay to look around. "Okay, I got an idea." She whispers at me and sneaks around the rack of clothes. "You just act like an innocent bystander shopping for clothes. Here's 30 bucks, I said I would pay half. Go find something nice. I while act like the store CEO making sure everything is in working condition. We'll meet by the car."

I go to find some clothes, acting completely innocent. Christina walks up to the front desk to a perky blonde who probably had no clue what's going on. "Excuse me, I'm the CEO of this company and I am here for a routine check."

"As in you are Vanessa Williams? From Chicago?"

"Yes, now I'd like to see your stock pile to see how everything is doing."

"Right away ma'am."

The perky blonde leads her to the storage roomwhere they spend some time. While she's gone I find a pair of pants, a black dress, and a gray top. The next thing ik know I hear Christina yelling. "No these should no longer be used! I'll take these and have new ones sent to you as soon as possible."

She runs out of the room with a carry full of fake bellies and runs out of the store. I take that as my cue to get the hell out of here. "What was that all about?" I ask the cashier as I set the clothes down.

"Boss, boss wasn't happy so she took some stuff with her. Nothing to big just a routine check we get them every year."

"Oh I see."

"Your total today is going to be $63.78." I hand her the money and she hands me the clothes.

I thank her and walk fast out of the store. When I get to the car I find Chris searching through the thing of fake bellies. "Let's get out of here."

"Agreed, go through those, they go by week. Then you can use that."

"Thanks." I start going through everything in the back seat. I find the one labeled 27 weeks on it and take it. "Geez either I am really pale or these are the right skin tone. What did you do too get these anyway?"

She shrugs and I start to rip the duct tape of my side to undo the pillow. "It wasn't too hard. I just went through the inventory list with her and when we got to these I freaked at took the whole thing. They were marked with a 3 and they looked about your skin tone so I took them."

"You my friend, are an evil genius."

"Hey what a good friend of mine once taught me. To be a good liar you have to first believe in the lie."

"She sounds like a philosopher." I say with a laugh because that friend was me.

"Far from it." She says with a laugh. I push her a bit and she jerks the car. "Hey do you want your car wrecked?"

"No." I start playing with the Velcro. These things are heavy. "I want to be driving it."

"You do have a nice car. The drive is smooth."

I place the stomach on and Velcro it around my waist. Then adjust it so it's not on there crooked. "I know that's why I got it. We've had it since Granger was little. It was the only thing that got him to sleep. Car rides still knock him out."

"Ah that's cute."

"Ugh this thing is so heavy, it's like the stomach is made for the actual weight." I say uncomfortably.

"I know it took a little effort to push them out of the store." She pulls into the parking lot where the truck is at. "Tobias let you drive his truck?"

"Yeah."

"I can't believe it. He must really trust you too let you behind the wheel of his baby."

"We have that bond."

"Obviously, you slept with each other."

"Hey shut up. We were both drunk and were having issues."

"Yeah, yeah, yeah that's what they all say. Just wait bad ju-ju will happen to you in your future."

I roll my eyes at Christina's dumb beliefs and start putting things in the truck. "Well dearie I hope we have another day like this in the near future. I do enjoy our days off tricking people and stealing things that are completely ridiculous." I say turning around only to find out the car is gone. "Well I do enjoy talking to myself. Don't others?"

I hop in the truck and head home, ready for bed because today has been a long day.
