A/N: I guess apologizing for taking so long on this final chapter is pretty pointless. I had a rough couple months after the first of the year and lost inspiration for all of my stories thanks to a stupid guy breaking my heart. I've finally recovered and am so over it! Here's the long overdue final chapter :)
Day 8: The Final Day
Enjoy!
Lyle let out a groan and grimaced at the light flooding into the bathroom. He was splayed out on the hard tile floor where he had passed out sometime in the night. He vaguely remembered Setsuna coming into the bathroom while he was throwing up and the rest of his memories after that were dark. The older meister pulled himself up slowly and winced at how stiff and sore his body was from spending the night on the ground.
"Damn it all," he whispered with a scowl as he looked at his reflection in the bathroom mirror.
The sniper turned the faucet on and splashed cold water on his face. He sighed and opened the bathroom door. Lyle walked out slowly to see inky black hair on Feldt's pillow and he frowned.
"Setsuna, get up," Lyle said loudly.
The Krugis meister didn't stir and Lyle grabbed a box of tissues nearby; chucking it at Setsuna's head. It hit its target and the young meister shot up quickly with sharp eyes.
"Easy now," Lyle said as he grabbed his duffle bag and started digging through it.
"Lockon?" Setsuna asked.
"Someone was sleeping well," Lyle said sarcastically and then asked, "Where's Feldt?"
The sniper watched Setsuna's eyes suddenly become wide. The dark haired meister looked down and lifted the sheets with a small frown.
"Adorable…" Lyle mumbled as he turned so he wasn't facing them.
"Feldt, wake up," Setsuna said in a quiet voice and shook the girl next to him gently.
She was nestled up next to him and opened her green eyes slowly. The engineer looked up to see brown eyes watching her and she smiled.
"Good morning."
Lyle glanced over his shoulder to see the pink haired girl sit up next to Setsuna and he let out a light huff. He had no right to be jealous but he couldn't help himself. Apparently he had fallen for Feldt more than he had initially thought. Lyle had told himself after Anew died that she would be the only woman to ever have his heart and now the sniper wasn't so sure that that was the case. He turned slightly to see how bright Feldt's green eyes were looking up at Setsuna and he couldn't deny that she loved his comrade.
"Lyle?"
The sniper paused and turned to face the couple with raised eyebrows. Feldt stared back at him with an innocent face and his features instantly softened.
"How are you feeling this morning?" she asked him in a quiet voice.
Lyle gave her a grin and a wink, "I'm just fine."
Setsuna narrowed his eyes as he saw right through the older meister's façade. He looked down at Feldt who seemed satisfied with the answer and sighed.
"You two should get ready, we need to head to Youghal to get picked up," Lyle told them as he turned and started digging through his bag once again.
"I can't believe this trip is over…" Feldt trailed off, "But I think I'm ready to get back to work."
"We all are," Setsuna stated.
Lyle finally found what he was looking for and made his way back to the bathroom where he changed his clothes quickly.
"I feel like hell," he grumbled as he stared at the dark circles under his eyes in the mirror.
"Lockon."
Lyle glanced over his shoulder slowly to see Setsuna leaning into the bathroom with narrowed eyes.
"What?"
"Are you going to be okay to drive us?" the black haired meister asked.
Lyle gave a small toss of his head, "I'll be fine, don't worry about it."
"You spent the entire night vomiting and then blacked out on the floor… I don't know if that qualifies as being alright to drive," Setsuna said dryly.
"I'm fine," Lyle stated shortly with a scowl.
"Maybe you should take a shower to wake up."
"Feldt?!" Lyle took a step back as she opened the bathroom door all the way.
"She knows how sick you were. She's the one who came to my room last night because she was worried about you," Setsuna said.
Lyle made eye contact with the pink haired girl and instantly looked away. He gritted his teeth and forcefully ran his fingers through his brown hair. The pair in front of him backed up and closed the door so he was alone again. Lyle grabbed the knob in the shower and turned it on with a tired sigh.
"I need a cigarette… This is too much."
…
"Is he going to be okay?" Feldt asked Setsuna quietly as she packed her things into her suitcase.
Setsuna was leaning against the wall with his arms crossed and narrowed his eyes, "He'll be fine."
Feldt's expression fell and she wasn't sure if she agreed with the dark haired meister next to her. Setsuna noticed the engineer's frown and reached for her; wrapping his arm around her shoulders. He gently pulled her close to him and Feldt looked up into chestnut eyes.
"He'll be fine," Setsuna repeated in a quiet voice.
The pair stood in silence for a few moments before Feldt started to pull away.
"I'll just finish packing…" she trailed off.
Setsuna nodded and walked toward the door, "I need to get my things from my room. I'll see you downstairs."
Feldt watched him leave and sighed when the door closed. All she could hear was the shower running and a nervous feeling welled in her stomach. The pink haired girl felt like a horrible person. Lyle was miserable and it was all her fault. Their relationship had been a rollercoaster ride. When they first met and he had forced himself on her Feldt never imagined that they would eventually become friends. She still couldn't believe how they had become friends and then gone beyond that. He had been the first man she had slept with and was still the only one. Lyle was important to her and she didn't want to lose him.
The shower stopped and Feldt's eyes widened as she realized that quite a bit of time had gone by while she was thinking. She looked down quickly and began grabbing her belongings to pack them away in her suitcase. The engineer gulped when she realized she still had a few things in the bathroom that she needed to pack up. Feldt sat down on the foot of her bed and waited with a small frown on her lips. Several minutes passed and the bathroom door slowly opened. Lyle emerged dressed with damp brown hair. He glanced up at Feldt and knitted his brow.
"What are you still doing here?"
"I have a few things left in the bathroom that need packed up," Feldt replied quietly.
Lyle let out a sigh and crossed his arms, "Alright, what's wrong?"
Feldt's head shot up and her eyes were wide, "What do you mean?"
"You're acting funny," Lyle told her with skeptical eyes.
"I'm sorry!" Feldt blurted out, tears forming in the corners of her eyes.
"Sorry? For what?" Lyle asked with a bizarre expression.
Feldt's eyes went to the floor, "For everything. You're miserable and it's because of me."
Lyle blinked his blue eyes, "Feldt… what are you talking about? I'm not miserable."
The engineer shook her head vigorously, "You are! What I did to you wasn't fair!"
"What you did to me?"
"Quit acting like you don't know what I'm talking about…" Feldt trailed off and then continued, "I'm so glad we became friends after how we first met. You've become one of my closest friends now and I think we understand each other."
Lyle froze at the engineer's choice of words. Anew had always talked about how they understood each other. Now Feldt was standing in front of him saying the same thing.
"I feel like I led you on… we went beyond what friends do and we can never take that back," Feldt continued to speak.
"Do you want to take it back?" Lyle questioned.
"No!" Feldt spoke immediately.
A small smile crossed the sniper's lips, "That's good to know you don't regret it."
"I regret what I've done to you though. I liked Setsuna but still made the choice to sleep with you among other things. I should have been stronger and controlled myself to only be friends with you."
Lyle shook his head and Feldt continued to speak, "It's terrible… Setsuna didn't want to be with me so I went to you. As soon as he was open to having a relationship with me I left you high and dry."
The sniper gave her a crooked smile, "I'm not going to deny you played both sides of the fence… but I'm not going to hold some kind of grudge against you."
Feldt clenched her fists, "I don't know what to say. I don't deserve to be friends with you after what I've done."
Lyle reached out and put his hand on top of the pink haired girl's head. Her green eyes popped open at the familiar gesture of comfort from the older meister.
"It's alright Feldt… We're friends and I'm glad you're happy. Don't worry about me. I enjoyed what we had for the short time we had it. I knew it wouldn't last and that's alright," Lyle said softly.
"Why wouldn't it have lasted?" Feldt asked.
"I could tell from the start that you were in love with Setsuna. Your heart was taken," Lyle answered.
"What about your heart though? What about Anew?"
The sniper let out a sigh, "I loved Anew with all of my heart and I still do."
"So your heart was taken too," Feldt stated.
Lyle shook his head, "I said Anew was the only woman I'd ever love. I firmly believed that until I met you. Somehow you weaseled your way into my heart and before I knew it I loved you too."
"Oh Lyle…" Feldt trailed off with a downcast expression.
"Don't give me that look. I told you not to worry about me and don't feel bad. Anew is gone and never coming back. At least I still have you in my life," Lyle spoke.
Feldt's bottom lip quivered as she tried not to cry.
"Cheer up, no need to be down. We're still best friends aren't we? And if Setsuna doesn't work out…" he trailed off with a wink.
"Lyle!"
"I'm kidding!" he laughed.
Feldt sighed and wrapped her arms around the Irishman. She hugged him tightly and he ruffled her pink hair with his gloved hand.
"Let's get our stuff and go downstairs," Lyle said, "Time to go back to work."
…
The group arrived in Youghal and Feldt found herself standing on the same dock that the Ptolemy had dropped her off on a week ago. She looked down at the suitcase in her hand and then to her side where Setsuna was standing. The Krugis meister looked at her with dark chestnut eyes and gave her a small smile. Feldt took a deep breath as she saw the Ptolemy surface in the distance.
"There it is!" Lyle said with a grin.
"You sound eager to get back to work," Tieria remarked.
Lyle shrugged, "I'm ready. I got my fill of bar hopping and partying."
"It was a really nice trip," Marie said.
Allelujah nodded in agreement, "Thanks Lockon, you did a great job."
Lyle let out a small laugh, "Not a problem."
The Ptolemy stopped just in front of the group and the door opened to reveal Sumeragi waiting for them with a satisfied smile.
"You all look well," she said as they boarded the craft.
Feldt waited until the others had boarded before she did. She turned to see that Setsuna was still next to her.
"Feldt…" he trailed off.
She smiled warmly at him, "Are you ready to get back to work?"
"I am," the black haired meister nodded.
"I'm glad we went on this trip. I want you to know that I'm here for you even though we're going back to Celestial Being," Feldt told him.
Setsuna nodded slowly, "I want to try and make this work. I can't promise it will be easy or that I'll be able to give you everything you need."
Feldt dropped her suitcase and flung her arms around him, "As long as you try I'll be happy."
Sumeragi watched with a smile playing across her lips, "It's about time those two realized how they felt about each other."
