Bella POV
In a world without sleep, two days felt like two eternities. Carlisle was correct about Liza. Her accelerated healing started to kick in once we got back to the old Cullen house. She sounded like she was going through the transformation from human to vampire, but that wasn't the case. I felt so horrible that I couldn't do anything to take away her pain. I knew if I could cry that I would be bawling. Xavier was healed by the time the second day rolled around. He was back to his usual self. It also pained him to watch his sister go through her recovery. It was the morning of our third day in Forks when Liza finally woke up.
"Mom?" She called out, her voice raspy. I was by her side in an instant. The scratches and bruises on her body were gone. It was like they never existed.
"How are you feeling, sweetie?" I asked, stroking her hair. She stretched and stood up.
"I feel fine." She smiled. "I don't remember everything that happened, but I remember enough to know why I was in so much pain. Thank you guys for saving me." She rushed to Carlisle and hugged him tightly. His smile was bright as he held her close.
"I'd do anything for my Granddaughter." Liza laughed and hugged him again.
"So, where are we at?" She asked, looking around the old Cullen mansion. Edward smiled, coming in to hug her.
"We're at our old house. It's where my family lived when I met your Mom." Liza smiled as she looked around the house still. Everything was basically the same as when they left.
"We have a surprise for you guys." I beamed. Xavier and Liza sat next to each other on the couch after exchanging a long, heartfelt hug.
"What's the surprise?" Xavier's eyes were gleaming with excitement. It's like they had never been hurt. It's like nothing happened to them from the happiness and smiles they were emitting.
"You get to meet your Grandpa from your Mother's side." Edward said, coming and wrapping his arms around my waist. Both of their faces lit up with joy.
"Grandpa Charlie?" Liza squealed. "I've wanted to meet him forever!"
"I thought we weren't allowed to tell humans about vampires?" X asked confusion evident in his voice.
"Since the Volturi no longer exists, I figured that we could make our own rules. Of course, we won't get out of hand, but you deserve to meet him. I'm sure he would also like to see Bella again." Carlisle stated with a smile. Xavier and Liza smiled even bigger.
"Can we go now?" Liza exclaimed, jumping to her feet. I couldn't help but laugh. If only she saw how much of a mess she was.
"Why don't you go clean up and then we'll go?" I suggested, pointing towards her. She blushed and let out a giggle before running upstairs. She was back downstairs in ten minutes looking clean. I smiled and pulled her in for a hug. I don't know how I ever would have been able to live without her or Xavier. We piled into the car and headed down the familiar drive to Charlie's house. I felt the nervousness come over me. What if he wasn't accepting of us? What if he hated me for hurting him? My mind raced with the uncontrollable thoughts. Edward grabbed my hand, sensing my nerves. I gave him a small smile. Carlisle parked outside of Charlie's house. It looked just like I remembered it. It was the same two bedroom house that he had bought when he married Renee.
"Maybe it's best if Carlisle and I go first?" Edward suggested. I nodded silently as they got out of the car and headed for the door. Charlie's police cruiser was parked where it always was. Xavier grabbed my hand when Edward got out and I smiled at him thankfully.
"Does he think you're dead?" Liza asked quietly. I sighed and nodded. "He'll be really excited to find out that you aren't!" She said with a hopeful smile. I love my children more than anything. How lucky was I to have such amazing kids? Carlisle rapped lightly on the door. I could hear Charlie's heart beating. It was a healthy heart beat. I knew he was into his 50's already, but at least he was healthy. I could hear the sound of his feet shuffling across the floor. The door opened and his heart beat accelerated. I could hear the blood rush to his face and flow through his veins.
"Hello Charlie." Carlisle said charismatically. I looked over and saw that he looked just like he did twelve years ago, just with some grey hair and laugh lines. The emotion rushed to me and I realized just then how much I truly missed him. Charlie and I were always awkward, but that didn't change how much I loved him. Charlie cleared his throat.
"Carlisle…Edward. I never thought I'd see you two again. You look exactly the same. It's pretty weird." He let out a nervous laugh. "Would you guys like to come in?" His tone was nervous.
"Actually, we came because we have to talk to you about something. There is a reason why we look exactly like we did twelve years ago. The entire concept may be scary and slightly weird, but we wanted to tell you so we can let someone back in your life." Edward said, his velvet voice completely calm. Charlie cleared his throat again and shifted anxiously.
"Okay, go on with it." He mumbled, looking everywhere but directly at them. Carlisle gave a small smile before he continued.
"We aren't human, to start off with. We could never truly reveal ourselves to you in the past because of an ancient coven that had set strict rules when it came to interacting with humans." Charlie's heart was beating very quickly and I could see the sweat on his forehead from inside the car.
"What are you then if you aren't human? Don't tell me you guys are wolves too?" He let out another nervous laugh while twiddling his thumbs. Carlisle's laugh sounded like musical bells.
"We aren't wolves, Charlie. We're vampires." Charlie's eyes went wide and his heart increased even more. "Don't worry, we don't hunt humans. We feed off of animals, which is how we get golden eyes."
"Vampires?" He asked incredulously. "Does everything in fairytales exist?" He laughed. Edward shook his head with a low chuckle.
"Not exactly. I'm glad to see that you are taking this well." Carlisle mused. Charlie shrugged his shoulders.
"I've gotten used to weird things around here in the last years. Would you guys like to come inside now?" He said with his gruff voice.
"Actually, there is more to our visit. Someone very special is with us." Edward motioned to the car and I ducked my head. "Please, come over." He murmured. We all got out of the car and headed towards the door. I stayed out of sight as best that I could. "Maybe we should go inside and sit down before we introduce everyone?" Charlie turned and headed inside the house. I was the last to enter. Everything looked exactly how it did when I left. The small kitchen was still the same as was the living room. Charlie sat down on the couch with Edward and Carlisle. The kids and I sat on the loveseat. I let my hair cover my face.
"Okay. This is getting weird. Please, tell me what's going on. You guys are vampires and these are important people. Who are they?" Charlie was getting anxious. I lifted my head and looked at him. His eyes nearly came out of his head before tears started welling up inside of them.
"Hi Daddy." I whispered. Charlie had tears streaming down his face as we both stood to hug each other. I was gentle as ever when I hugged him. He was so warm and smelled just like he did before. He was squeezing me tightly for a human. We finally let go of each other.
"How?" He asked. "I thought you were dead." His voice was shaky with his emotion.
"I was supposed to die. I was leaving Forks when I hit another vampire. She changed me and I have been living with her for the last twelve years. There's even more to the story than that…" His eyes were wide; awaiting the next part. "I had left Forks because I found out that I was pregnant with Edward's baby. I didn't even know it was possible. Dad, these two lovely children are your grandkids."
Charlie looked like he was about to pass out. I couldn't tell if it was from shock or joy, but either way, seeing him made my dead heart blissful. He stood up again, this time I could visibly see him shaking. He got on his knees in front of Liza and Xavier. He reached out and touched both of their faces. The kids were smiling. I couldn't believe this moment was real. My children actually get to meet their grandfather. I never thought it could be possible. He pulled them towards him with a hug. They both squeezed him tightly, but gentle enough not to hurt him.
"I'm in shock. I can't believe any of this. It almost feels like a damn dream. They're so beautiful, Bells." Charlie smiled at me happily. I couldn't help but to smile back. "I'm unable to even be upset at Edward." That brought a laugh out of everyone.
We spent the next few hours catching up and swapping stories of the last twelve years. Liza and Xavier already loved Charlie. They were amazed at all his stories from being on the police force. I felt the happiest that I have ever been at this moment. Edward broke the comfortable silence that we had fallen into. "Charlie, I need to ask you a question." My attention went directly to Edward. He hadn't discussed anything with me so I wonder what he's up to.
"Shoot."
"May I marry your daughter?" A gasp left my mouth as a smile came across Charlie's face.
"I don't see why not. You already got her pregnant and had kids." Charlie laughed and it brought a smile to everyone's faces. Edward shook hands with Charlie before coming over to me. He got down on one knee and I felt a smile creep onto my face. I couldn't believe he was actually doing this.
"Bella, I love you more than all the words could describe. You bring light to my existence and my life would have no meaning without you. We never had the wedding we were supposed to have, but let me make that up to you. I want to spend the rest of forever with you by my side. Will you marry me?" He pulled out a ring that was beautiful. It was a band of small diamonds with a medium sized diamond in the middle.
"Of course." He slid the ring onto my finger and kissed me passionately. I smiled into our kiss and hugged him tightly. I could feel all the eyes on us. I looked at our children and they had huge smiles plastered onto their faces. Charlie and Carlisle both had fatherly grins on their faces. Who knew that forever could turn out so amazing?
