Wow, this chapter is super long. It was originally going to be 1,500 words shorter…but I felt that it was too short. =) Enjoy! I'll see you at the bottom!
Chapter 14
Rag Doll
The first thing that Harri was aware of was that her scars were hurting, again. Voldemort was alive once more and she doubted that she was connected to him like she was a year ago, but her scar did recognize that his wand casted the killing curse at her. The next thing that caught her attention was the medley of voices speaking around her.
"Professor, do you know what happened to them?" a concerned voice asked, it sounded like the younger voice of Remus.
"Mr. Lupin, we would need one of them to wake up, again. Mr. George Westly was only conscious enough to tell us their names. Ms. Harriet Porter was the one that fought the creature in the woods. I feel like she would be the one who remembers the most about their predicament," Dumbledore replied with a heavy sigh.
Porter and Westly...really George, was that the best he could come up with?
"Is there anything that could give a clue as to where they came from?" another voice asked, she figured that it was Sirius.
"She's part Veela...She most likely has ancestors from France by the looks of it," a perplexed and unfamiliar voice said. That had to be her father. He could probably sense that she was a Veela.
Harri groaned and opened her eyes, figuring that this was the best time for her to wake up. She realized that she was in the hospital wing, she spent enough of her free time there back in her own time.
She was greeted to the sight of Dumbledore's bright blue eyes. She could feel him trying to get into her mind. She glared at him and pushed him out. She didn't care if that would make him suspicious, she hated people trying to get inside her head. The exchange must have only been a few seconds, but it made their positions very clear. The boys behind him didn't even notice. "My dear girl, you gave us quite a scare. What were you doing in the forbidden forest?" Dumbledore questioned, eyes narrowed.
Harri sighed and sat up, ignoring the pain in her abdomen. She must have bruised something when she landed.
"A Death Eater attacked us. She threw a portkey, hoping that it would get rid of me and my boyfriend. Her plan backfired, like they normally do. Luckily, I was conscious after we landed because that spider was not friendly. By the way, where am I, exactly?" Harri replied, running a hand through her hair. She noticed that it was still blonde and she let out an internal sigh of relief. She really didn't want to answer questions as to why she looked just like James Potter.
Speaking of her father, he was standing at the foot of her bed along with Sirius and Remus. All three of them were remarkably young. Since there was no Head Boy badge on her father's person she was going to assume that he was in his fifth or six year.
"Ah, you are at Hogwarts School for Witch Craft and Wizardry. These three young gentlemen found you in the forest and brought you here to me. Now, I have a question for you," Dumbledore replied with a smile on his face.
"Ask away," Harri said, waiting for the worst. She figured he couldn't see past her glamour rune, it was the most powerful one she knew. So, he was most likely going to ask about that first.
"Why are you disguising yourself? The necklaces you wear can't be taken off by anyone, except, I'd assume, yourselves," he asked, eyes boring into hers.
"My boyfriend and I were attacked by Death Eaters. It obviously wasn't the first time this had happened. I was doing my best to avoid them, but one tracked us down. These are the only things stopping us from getting killed," Harri told him holding her necklace in her hands.
"Why weren't your parents protecting you? Obviously you can't have made here on your own?" Sirius asked from the other side of the bed. He had much longer hair than he did in her time and she gritted her teeth in frustration.
"My parents and George's parents were killed by the people we're running from. My godfather tried to give us time to run, but I fear that he perished as well. So, at this point, we are on our own," she snapped and he stepped back. She saw pity in her father's eyes and she looked away, feeling close to tears.
"Well, Miss Porter, you and your partner are free to stay at Hogwarts for the time being. We will even offer you both asylum, if you so choose," Dumbledore told her with a kind smile.
Harri sighed, thinking quickly. She could really mess up history by staying here, but where would they go? "I'll stay, but what will George do? He's past schooling age?" she answered and she could see that the three boys looked excited to hear that she was staying. She must have peeked their interest.
"He could work as an assistant of sorts to one of the professors. We will discuss this more when you're both in better condition. You will also need to be sorted, but I'll let these three boys here explain some of the school traditions," he said with a twinkle in his eyes as he left the room. She knew that this conversation wasn't over. He was waging a war, not one with wands and weapons, but a mental one. He was going to try and catch her off guard at one point, she was just going to make sure that she was well protected. As soon as the door closed the teens rushed over to her.
Harri sat back on her pillows and pushed her hair out of her face, waiting for the deluge of questions she was about to asked. She looked at her father and realized that he was, in fact, part Veela. She felt a sort of camaraderie with him, just like Fleur. Sirius was unsurprisingly the first one to speak up.
"Harriet, is it true that you're a Veela? Prongs here has been claiming you are and I don't believe him," Sirius said, clapping her father on the back and winking at her in a flirtatious manor. She was never going to let him live this down when she got back to the future.
"I am, your friend is very perceptive to figure that out. What are your names? I don't believe that we've been properly introduced. I'm Harriet Porter and you are?" she asked, extending her hand and Sirius backed up slightly, surprised by her calm demeanor.
Remus brushed past Sirius and shook her hand. "I'm Remus Lupin, the prat that was talking to you moments ago is Sirius Black and the goof ball in the corner is James Potter. We're in our sixth year...but I suppose you don't really know what that means. I can't believe that Dumbledore left us here to explain everything to you. There is so much history that you wont understand," he said more to himself that Harri.
The girl giggled a little bit at his frustration and James perked up at her laugh. "Remus, I'll explain a few things to her. Give your brain a break, all that homework is really getting to you," he told his friend, patting him on the back and then turning back to Harri. "So, basically, the school is broken up into four houses: Gryffindor, Ravenclaw, Hufflepuff or Slytherin, and you'll be sorted into one. Then you'll have to attend multiple classes, and if you're lucky, you will get to witness some Marauder mischief," he told her and she smiled.
"Marauder mischief?" she asked innocently and all three boys grinned. She hadn't seen those kinds of grins on Sirius and Remus. She had only ever seen them in pictures with her father.
"Ms. Porter, we are pleased to introduce you to Moony, Padfoot and Prongs. We are three of the four Marauders. Our friend Peter is the fourth, but he's doing homework and couldn't be here," Sirius explained with wide gestures and dramatic waving of his arms. Harri was rather glad that Peter wasn't here, she might have strangled him on the spot.
"George would like you, he's a prankster too," she informed them, but before they could respond Madam Pomfrey came bustling in and ushered them all out.
With nothing else to do the teen was left to herself. She laid back down on the hospital bed and tried to figure out how she was going to get back home. Harri knew that Alya threw a time turner at her and George, but that didn't help her figure out how to get back. She'd have to try a few runes later in the Room of Requirement.
Harri looked to her left and saw George sleeping peacefully and hoped that he would wake up soon. She hated when he got hurt because of her. Of course, being part Veela made her feel even worse about it. It seemed that the gash on his head had closed, so that was a relief. He would no doubt be giddy since he would be in the same school as the Marauders when they were in their pranking prime.
Harri was just worried that she would slip up and say something that would ruin the future. As much as she wants to change what happened to her parents, it could alter the future for the worst. If her parents didn't die it would have been Neville's parents that were killed. She would have to get rid of all the Horcruxes in the past and then hunt down Voldemort and kill him...it wouldn't work. She barely survived fighting him in a weaker and more deranged state. She doubted that she could beat him when he was in his full power.
Eventually, Harri ended up falling asleep with thoughts of getting back home filling her dreams.
"So, her name is Harriet Jane? Does she know what house she's going to be in? I bet those prats filled her head with nonsense," a feminine voice said from next to her bed.
"Well, I doubt that she would let herself by influenced by anyone. I was out cold," George answered, she could tell without even opening her eyes that he had a smirk on his face.
"It be nice if you didn't talk about me while I'm sleeping a few feet away, George. It's tackless," she teased opening her eyes. George gave her a roguish grin from his bed that was right next to hers. She rolled her eyes at his blasé attitude. It wasn't like they were stuck in the past...
The sixth year ran a nervous hand through her hair, getting some knots out as her fingers pushed through. Harri turned her head to where the other voice was coming from and she nearly fell off her bed. She saw a red head with familiar green eyes staring at her. Harri gasped in surprise, she didn't expect to run into her mother so quickly.
"Oh, I'm Lily Evans. Dumbledore told me to take you to his office once you woke up. He wants to sort you before classes start tomorrow," she said with a smile and Harri mutely nodded. George motioned for her to go forward. Harri looked down at her clothing and realized that she was still in the tattered clothing from two days ago.
"Would you mind if I changed first? I don't want to walk around in ripped clothing covered in blood," Harri asked and Lily blushed, noticing that Harri was only in a tattered shirt and ripped up jeans. She nodded, looking away and Harri went into a bathroom nearby and put on a clean shirt and pair of jeans that she got from the pouch around her neck. Her two different necklaces catching the light in the bathroom. She quickly tied her hair in a braid and made her way out of the bathroom. She even pulled out some of George's clothes. She threw them at his head, successfully coving his head with his shirt.
"Oi!" He shouted indignantly, pulling the white shirt off his face. Harri waved as she left the room with Lily. The red head was laughing quietly, a hand covering her mouth. Lily wasn't going to deny that the new girl was pretty, with her silky blonde hair and blue eyes, there was no doubt that most of the male population of Hogwarts would be at her mercy. The red head watched the new girl curiously, eying the various trinkets on her person. She was wearing various smooth stones with runes on them, some in her necklace, others in bracelets. She even had one drawn on as an intricate arm band. Lily wasn't sure what to make of her, so she settled with being wary.
"Is there something on my face?" Harri asked, almost making Lily trip in surprise. The blonde caught her arm and hauled her back to her feet.
"No, nothing. So, I heard that you met the Marauders yesterday," she replied, changing the subject.
"I did. They were very interesting...Now, why were you the one that was picked to take me to the Headmaster's office and not one of them?" Harri asked, letting Lily lead, she didn't want her to become suspicious. Of course, Harri already knew why Dumbledore picked her mother to escort her. Lily Evans was perceptive and intelligent. If anyone was going to pick up on any plot holes in Harri's story it was going to be Lily.
"I'm actually trust worthy and all of the Marauders in are detention, they successfully glued Ms. Norris and Filch to the ceiling of the Great Hall," Lily replied with a disapproving look on her face. Harri smirked, she wished she could have seen that.
She could tell that Lily was ready to burst with questions, but luckily, they reached the Gargoyle that would lead them to Dumbledore's office. "Sugar Quills," the red head said and motioned for Harri to go into his office.
The blonde did as she motioned and entered Dumbledore's office, Lily didn't follow and Harri assumed that she was going to wait elderly man was standing there with a hat in his hand. "What's the hat going to do?" Harri asked, feigning innocence.
"It's going to sort you into a Hogwarts House, but you already know that, don't you, Ms. Porter," he said with a twinkle in his eyes and Harri blinked a few times wondering what he was up to.
"Your boyfriend wasn't as good as you were when trying to hide things from me. I did meet quite a bit of resistance. All I know is that you two aren't from this time, but you both went to Hogwarts. I assume that since you are a Veela and he is your mate that you share a very strong connection. You mind protected his while you were sleeping. That's very impressive, Ms. Porter...very impressive indeed. Now, let's get this sorting over with," he explained and Harri mentally cursed. She forgot about George, he wasn't trained in Occlumency like she was. Though, she was happy that their identities were safe for the time being.
Nevertheless, Harri walked up to the Headmaster and put the hat on her head.
"Ah, another Potter, though you aren't nearly as easy to place as all the others. Such a mixed mind and a developed one at that. Hm, you would massacre the Hufflepuffs, the Ravenclaws would bore you, you would do alright in Slytherin, were we not on the brink of a war and you're not a pureblood...I know exactly where to put you," the hat whispered in her mind.
"Gryffindor!" it shouted and Harri pulled it off her head and waited for further instructions.
Dumbledore didn't looked shocked by the revelation and handed her a Gryffindor tie. "Ms. Evans will be waiting outside for you. She will show you where you will be staying for the time being. You will have a class schedule drawn up for you. Mr. Westly will be assisting Professor Slughorn in the potions lab, thus he will be living right off from the lab. Hopefully, he will stop of explosions before the happen," he informed her and she nodded, trying not to laugh. George would be devastated to find out that he had to stop explosions, instead of create them. She was going to have to visit George often, just so he doesn't go stir crazy.
Harri left the his office, but was surprised to find no one waiting for her when she got out. Something didn't seem right with this. The blonde pulled out her wand and looked around, and waited for something to catch her attention. Suddenly, there was a loud bang from a corridor over. Harri got ready for a fight and ran after the bang. When she got there she saw Lily surrounded by three older Slytherin boys. Three were already out cold on the ground. Harri now knew where she got her dueling skills from.
Lily looked feral, her hair was almost standing on end as she pointed her wand at the three boys, though they didn't look nearly as tired as she did.
"Reducto!" Harri shouted hitting two of the Slytherins, catching them by surprise and Lily quickly took the other one out with a stunning hex. The red head looked grateful for her help.
"That was a good spell...thank you for the help," Lily said wiping some sweat from her forehead. Her eyes focused on the tie in her hand. "Oh, your in Gryffindor as well!"
"Yes, why did these six attack you?" Harri asked and Lily shook her head, not wanting to answer, so Harri started to walk away.
Lily looked like she wanted to help them, but instead followed the blonde girl away from the scene.
"Dumbledore told me to talk to you...he said that you could show me to where I'd be staying," she replied and the red head nodded. The two talked quietly about school and what subjects that Harri would be taking. It seemed that she would be in quite a few of same classes as her.
By the time that they reached the tower they were discussing the idiocy of Divination. Lily told her the password the get into the tower and showed her to the sixth year girl's dormitory, where she'd be sharing a room with Lily, and her friend Alice. Apparently, all the other girls had left because of the impending war.
Harri grimaced, the war was worse during her parents time and lasted much longer. If it lasted much longer in her time, there was no doubt that people would have started to drop out of classes. Luckily, it hadn't come to that. Harri pulled out some extra robes from the pouch around her neck and put them in the trunk at the foot of her bed, which the school had supplied for her.
It took nearly a half an hour for her to get settled and then the two girls went back down to the common room. She spotted the Marauders, all four of them, lounging on the couches closets to the fire with grins on the faces, talking in hushed tones. No doubt they were planning a prank. Harri was going to have to ignore her hatred for Peter...it was going to be difficult, but she'd do it.
Harri saw Lily's jaw set tightly. The blonde shrugged and walked over to them as quietly as possible. She didn't look back at Lily, who no doubt wouldn't like her talking to them. "So, what about jelly? It's sticky and wouldn't hurt anyone..." Remus whispered and Sirius shock his head.
"No, it's easy to wash out," James replied, running a hand through his hair.
Harri leaned down from behind. "What about waterproof hair gel," she whispered in the same tone and all four of them jumped. She grinned and the three that she met earlier spotted the tie around her neck.
"So, you picked the best house, after all! Moony thought that you were going to be in Ravenclaw, silly, silly, Moony!" Sirius told her and Harri almost wanted to cry. That was exactly what her first letter from Sirius said to her on her first day at Hogwarts! It was like the past repeated itself.
"It's nice to know that you'll be in the same classes as us. It would have been upsetting if you were in another house," Remus said with a kind smile that she recognized.
Harri looked behind her and saw that Lily looked appalled with her and she decided she better get back to her mother before she blew a gasket.
As she walked back over to Lily, the Marauders waved. The red head's eyes narrowed to slits as she looked between Harri and the Marauders. There was an emotion in her eyes that she had only seen a few times in her life. "See you later, Harriet!" James shouted from across the common room. Harri wanted to hit her head against a wall. Didn't he realize that Lily wasn't in a good mood?
"She is not going to spend time with you four! She's too smart to want to be in detention every week!" Lily snapped and pulled Harri away from the boys at a much faster pace, looking back at James. She felt somewhat like a rag doll.
"Evans, I think that she can figure out what she wants to do on her own," James told her and Lily looked like she wanted to breathe fire and Harri wished she didn't have to be the object of their argument. This was awkward enough as it was.
"Potter, you have no say in what I do and she has been through enough, without you getting her in trouble," Lily responded, pulling Harri out of the common room completely. She saw the disappointed look on her father's face before they disappeared from his line of sight. That probably hurt him more than her mother realized.
Harri was dragged around the halls for a few minutes, until Lily finally released her. The red head leaned back against a wall, resting her head against the cool brick. That was when she finally realized what had happened back in the common room. Harri almost laughed at the irony, if it wasn't so gross.
"Lily, you know what a Veela is, right?" Harri asked and her mother nodded.
"Well, you shouldn't feel threatened when I talk to James. I have my mate already..." Harri said carefully. She didn't want to meddle with her parents love life or get on her mother's bad side, but she didn't want anyone thinking that she was romantically interested in her father. She shuddered at the thought.
Lily's cheeks flushed, but she didn't really make an objection. Harri figured that Lily was beginning to feel drawn to James. They were mates after all.
"I don't like James," she whispered hostilely. Harri chuckled and patted her on shoulder.
"Of course you don't. Now, can you take me to the potions lab? I need to see my mate before classes start in the morning," Harri asked and Lily nodded curtly. She obviously hadn't forgiven her for her mentioning her being romantically interested in James.
They reached the potions lab in ten minutes. Harri knocked on the door and once George opened the door, his dark green eyes seemed bored, until Lily stomped away in a huff. George gave Harri a confused look and she mouthed 'tell you later.'
George motioned for Harri to come in. The blonde entered happily and looked at his accommodations. He had a small sitting room with two chairs near a fireplace, that led off to three rooms. Harri guessed that it was an office, bedroom and bathroom, but it was just a guess.
Harri turned around to find George leaning on the closed door. He took a deep breath. "Harri, I need to tell you something."
Hi! So, I might have left that on a cliff hanger…just a small one. XD I was actually going to end it before she got sorted, so I nearly doubled the chapter for you guys!
So, I have decided that this book is going to have 2 endings! One good one and one paradox ending. Well, I'm setting it up so the paradox will work with both endings, which I'm leading up to. If you can guess the paradox then you're a genius, but you're going to have to think way outside of the box. I've kind of already hinted at it. Think about the necklaces.
Anyway, thank you for all the awesome reviews! I feel like a lot of you liked the time-travel twist! Glad I can keep you all on your toes! You beat the goal! Congrats!
Review goal for this week: 180 =) A nice even number
