Chapter 14!~~
Um, sorry. There's no excuse for me not updating in over a month :/ Ugh. I'm stupid.
Haha, woo I feel stupid. Actually a few chapters ago I mentioned Kaito's birthday and then I wrote like five more chapters NOT MENTIONING IT AGAIN so I panicked and re-read it all and decided I could add in a short one about his birthday here. Phew, I was hoping for that.
So, if you didn't know, Kaito's birthday is canonically the same as Gosho Aoyama's, which is June 21. Hence the mentioning of it during the summer time. Yaaay! Enjoy the chapter!
The ringing of the doorbell caused Kaito to jump in fright and quickly shuffle out of the secret room, fixing the large door in the form of a picture, and scamper to the front door. He had been working on his latest Kid gadgets and information, and the surprising ringing of the bell had shocked him.
Wondering who was at the door, since no one ever seemed to come by except his few friends, Kaito eagerly answered with a large grin.
"Happy birthday, Kaito!" said a voice, and before Kaito could see the source, he was glomped into a tight hug full of balloons and smelling of his favorite detective. Realizing that Shinichi had decided a surprise visit to his house caused Kaito's plastered-on grin to form into a larger, more sincere grin.
Shinichi pulled back and smiled at Kaito, diving in for a quick peck on the cheek. He shoved the balloons into Kaito's hands and said, "Go inside; I'll be there in a minute," and turned back around, making his way to the car in the driveway.
Thinking it odd that Shinichi had come by car, Kaito shrugged and followed the instructions to go back into his house. He let the balloons drift to the ceiling in the living room, smiling at the unexpected treat. He heard Shinichi's footsteps hesitantly walking through the front of the house towards the living room. "Kaito?" Shinichi said, sticking his head through the door. "Ah, there you are..."
He stepped all the way in, hands full of a large box and an equally large 's eyes lit up at the prospect of yet more presents. Shinichi placed them down on the table, glancing around to observe the house.
"Oh yeah," Kaito realized, "you haven't been here before. I almost forgot."
Shinichi turned back toward Kaito, eyes still calculating. "Yep. So where's your mother? Isn't she celebrating with you?"
Kaito laughed. "No, Okaa-san is overseas right now...she did call me this morning briefly but I'm alone for today. "
Shinichi, blinking, frowned slightly. "That's no good...you should have told me. I thought you'd be busy all day so I'd just drop by and bring you some fun things for now and let you have the rest of the day with your friends and family..."
"Don't worry about it, Shinichi! I'm fine!" Kaito smiled.
The detective sighed, shaking his head. "Well you'll just have to spend time with me today then," he said, flashing a smile. "Go ahead, open your gifts." He nodded towards the untouched mysteries on the table.
"Don't mind if I do," Kaito said with a wide trademark smile, picking up the box first. He ripped the wrapping paper off and opened the box, revealing a large cake. And his smile faltered for a moment. On the cake icing was a picture of himself grinning deviously back at him...except in Kid form. "Oh..." he said quietly. His heart began to beat faster. What did this mean? Was Shinichi trying to say something...?
"You like it, right?" Shinichi asked in excitement. "I thought that it would be cool to put his picture there since you like him so much."
"Oh!" Kaito said, chuckling nervously. Right, he thought. He doesn't even have an inkling. He doesn't know that's me. A strong feeling of nauseous guilt flowed through him, but he continued to smile. "Thank you so much Shinichi!"
"Sure," Shinichi said, "open the other!"
Kaito tried to calm his nerves, breathing deeply. He reached for the bag and searched inside. He found a familiar book, a birthday card, a small pack of papers, and a framed picture of him and Shinichi together. Upon closer inspection, Kaito found that the card was quite generic, only stating a "Happy birthday!" with Shinichi's scrawled signature; the pack of papers was a homemade coupon book (free kisses, hugs, and dates anytime Kaito wished); the picture was one taken by one of their friends a few months ago, in which they both wore goofy smiles while standing under a blooming tree in the bright sun.
Shinichi went to sit on the couch next to Kaito as he finished looking at his gifts. Patting Kaito's back, he began to explain. "The book is the one I had the first time we met. I've had it since I was little and...uh...it's embarrassing to admit that I used to take it with me for good luck when I was little."
Kaito looked up with an amused expression. "Really? You didn't need any good luck with me," he said with a playful wink. "Thank you," he said genuinely. He began to slip a coupon from the pack before Shinichi stopped him.
"Hey, it's your birthday, right? Don't use those too quickly. What do you want?"
Kaito's heart pounded against his chest; his detective would probably do anything he wanted right now. The thought almost allowed Kaito's cheeks to take on a pink tint. Almost. "Just a kiss..." Kaito said. Shinichi smirked and complied with a feather-light brush of his lips against the other boy's.
"How was that?" Shinichi breathed.
"You know that's not what I meant," Kaito murmured.
"What did you mean?"
"A real kiss. A long one."
"Show me," Shinichi challenged quietly, already poised directly in front of Kaito's lips.
And oh, did Kaito show him.
After putting away Kaito's various gifts, and after Shinichi excused himself to the bathroom to wash his hot face and compose himself, the boys had a fun day of relaxing at Kaito's house. They each ate a piece of cake while discussing various topics, as well as watching tv. Later in the day, Aoko made a short visit and gave Kaito a present and a kick to the shin. She stuck around for a bit and then decided to go home for dinner. After she left, Kaito and Shinichi both went out to the grocery store to buy dinner ingredients. Shinichi made a meal with the best skill that he could, and although Kaito wasn't allowed in the kitchen while Shinichi cooked, he sneaked glances to see the detective concentrating very hard on his work.
The food was good, but then everything Shinichi did was good. Kaito couldn't stop smiling—really smiling. Shinichi's awkward smile and clumsy cooking, his short kisses and his meaningful presents...they were all gifts to Kaito. And he loved every single one.
Haha, sorry?
I intended it to be short and to the point and sweet like 'woo-hoo birthday lets do it!' but it turned into this giant fluff-fest?
It was pretty much way longer than anticipated haha, but it wasn't too bad I guess. Cute? Yaaay it was at least a chapter!
Oh also a few things: Uh Shinichi had a rental car so he could safely carry all his presents. Forgot to explain that. Also I had like three ideas for what Shinichi would give Kaito as presents, but I forgot them. I really should start writing these things down, darn it. So I just used things I might like to get, haha.
Also (self-promo time?) I have another KaiShin fan fic out right now. It's December-themed, and is a daily-updated ficlet series for this month! Yay!
So thanks for reading! Review? Love you guys!
