Sam's POV

The next day, I headed over to Emily's, after of course having Jared come over to the house to stay with Bella and Renesmee. I wasn't taking any chances with Cullen. He'd made his intentions towards Bella very clear the day before. He would not let Bella out of their marriage very easily, and he'd proven that he didn't give a damn about respecting her wishes.

I parked my truck in Emily's driveway and headed to the front door. Emily needed to know what was going on and that I wouldn't be around for a while. She wasn't going to be happy about it. She'd already been upset when I told her I'd be away for a few weeks. Now I would have a lot of my time monopolized for the next year. She wasn't going to like it.

When I got inside, I saw Emily cleaning the counter. When she saw me, she smiled and ran towards me. "Sam!"

I caught her in my arms and held her gently.

Emily pulled away after a minute. "I'm so glad you're home. Are you hungry? I'll make you something to eat."

"No, I'm fine. We need to talk about something. Let's sit down," I said as I motioned towards the table.

Emily nodded and sat down. "Did you handle what you needed to with the Cullens?"

I sat down across from her. "Emily, you need to know the truth. The reason I couldn't be around was because I had to deal with something with Bella. She turned up pregnant with Edward Cullen's child."

Emily gaped in shock. "That's possible?"

"Yeah, apparently. It worried me. I was afraid of what the child would end up being, so I ordered the Pack to attack the Cullens and I forced Bella to come to my house. I'd intended to get the baby out of Bella and then…" I couldn't even bring myself to finish my sentence. When I thought about what I planned to do to Renesmee, I was disgusted with myself. That child was so sweet and innocent. I could hardly believe I'd been willing to hurt her.

"You were going to kill it, weren't you? You were going to hurt an innocent baby," Emily said in horror.

"I was, but I'm not now. When I held her, I couldn't do it," I told her.

"What do you mean when you held her? Bella couldn't have been pregnant for very long."

"She wasn't. It was just a few weeks. The baby grew quickly. She's still growing quickly," I said. Renesmee grew every day. I wasn't too worried about it though. Renesmee was Jacob's imprint. She was meant to be with him. I found it hard to believe she would be his natural path if her lifespan would be so short. I had to believe she would stop growing so fast at a certain point.

"Wow, that's unbelievable. But it's all over now. You let Bella go home to the Cullens and you're not going to go after her or the baby anymore, right?" Emily asked.

"No. Bella's still at my place. I don't think the baby is evil like I originally did, but I do want to make sure she doesn't accidently hurt someone," I said.

"So you're forcing Bella to keep living with you?" Emily asked.

"No. I asked her to stay and she agreed," I told her. I doubted Emily would be much happier about that though. I was still living away from her and with another woman and her child.

"Why would she agree to that?" Emily asked.

"Probably because she's a new mother, to a supernatural child and she has no one to help her through it," I said. That was my only explanation for why she agreed to stay. She had to hate my guts for what I tried to do. The only reason for her to stay would be because she had no one else.

"What are you talking about? She has her husband and the rest of the Cullens," Emily said.

"No, she doesn't. The leech isn't being at all supportive. He won't even treat the child like she's a human being. Bella doesn't trust him and she's right not to. So I doubt they'll be married much longer," I said. Bella was about ready to file for divorce, something I supported to the end. She shouldn't have married him in the first place, and not just because he was a leech, though that was bad enough. She shouldn't have married him because he had no respect for her. He proved that by leaving her in the damn woods.

"So a woman on the verge of divorce and child are going to be living with you?" I could hear the tint of jealousy in her tone.

"It's not like that. I am doing this to make sure no one accidentally gets hurt, and to make sure Bella and her child are safe from the leech. Bella barely tolerates me anyway. I planned to hurt her baby. I'm barely higher than Cullen to her right now," I said.

"And what about you? How do you feel about her?" Emily asked.

"Emily, don't do this. You know I love you," I said.

"I also know that can change," she said.

I groaned. I knew where this was going and I really didn't want to go down that road again. We'd already had this conversation a thousand times. I was sick of it. "Don't go there, Emily. I don't want to have this conversation again."

"I'm just saying that our relationship isn't like Jared and Kim's or Paul and Rachel's. You could always decide you don't wanna be with me anymore. You didn't imprint on me, even though you told me you had," Emily said bitterly.

"I thought I had," I said. I'd met Emily when I first became a wolf and learned about the imprinting legends. No one had imprinted by then, so all I had were the legends to go by. I mistook a strong attraction for an imprint. I'd learned that when Jared imprinted and I saw his thoughts on it. My relationship didn't even hold a candle to theirs. But by then, Emily and I had been together for months. I had feelings for her by then.

"But you didn't, which means we could eventually break up," Emily said.

"That's any relationship, Emily," I said.

"Not an imprinted one."

I rubbed my eyes tediously. "That's because the imprinter has no real free will. The wolf imprints and the man is forced to love the girl. Do you really want me to love you because I have to?" I really didn't understand why Emily wanted me to imprint on her so badly. Why would she want me to be forced to love her? Why would any woman want that?

"We could be more in love. We could be happier," Emily said.

"It would be a forced happiness. It wouldn't be real," I said. I saw imprinting a lot like Jacob had. I saw it as forcing two people to be together. It was like a supernatural pair of handcuffs. I didn't want that for myself and I didn't wanna force it on anyone else.

"You're wrong. It wouldn't be forced. It…"

"Emily, stop! I'm not doing this anymore!" I said angrily before standing up. I was really sick of having this same conversation over and over. "I didn't imprint on you and I won't. I pray I never imprint on anyone. So please just let it drop and don't bring it up again!"

"Fine. What about this thing with Bella? How long do you plan on having another woman and her child in your house?" Emily asked.

"I'm not positive, but I told Bella no longer than a year," I said. Then I waited for the explosion I knew would come.

"A year?! You're going to play family with another woman for a year?! What about us, Sam? We're supposed to be starting out lives here," Emily said angrily.

"Emily, I'm still going to be around. I may not be here all the time, but that doesn't mean we aren't still together," I said.

"You'll be spending most of your time with another woman. How can you expect me to just be alright with that?" Emily asked.

"Don't say it like that. Don't make it sound like I'm betraying you or something. Bella is staying in my house and I'm helping with the baby, but it's not like we're going to bed together. It's no different than someone taking on a roommate," I said.

"Yeah, right," Emily said sarcastically.

"What do you expect me to do? Leave Bella to fend for herself against a leech?" I asked. I started off just doing this because Renesmee might be an unwitting danger to people, but after yesterday, I was doing it more to protect her and Bella from Cullen.

"That leech is her husband. She chose to be with him," Emily said.

"And now she's chosen to leave him. I wholeheartedly support that decision and I'm going to help protect her and her child from him. That's just the way it's gonna be," I said firmly.

"And I have no say in it?" she asked.

"No, you don't. I'm sorry, but I'm going to do this."

"Fine. You should get back to her, don't you think?" Emily asked angrily.

I sighed and started for the door. There was nothing more I could say to appease Emily right now, so I decided to just leave.
