(Tobias' POV)
"Now that you've all had a taste of what fighting would be like, it's time to stop hiding behind weapons like guns and knives. Used the most old-fashioned weapon instead: your own body," Tris was saying to the initiates while I leaned on the table, looking at each person to try and deduce who'd be good at what and who'd need help with what.
"Who would like to help me demonstrate how a fight would go?" she asked into the crowd. Oh yea, I forgot to mention: she decided to fight an initiate instead of me when we're showing them what to do. Probably to prove er strength; she never seems to realize just how strong she truly is-size doesn't matter. Well, it does, but not that much. So when Jose smirked and raised his hand, Tris smiled and beckoned toward him to enter the fighting ring.
She grinned and got into a fighting stance, hands covering her face, but not so much that she could not see the opponent. Jose was still smirking and walked toward Tris confidently, but Tris stood determined and ready, like the true fighter I knew she was.
Jose took a breath and stepped forward, sloppily throwing out a badly aimed punch to her face. Tris easily sidestepped. I smiled inwardly; I knew she wouldn't lose against a fight with Jose. Especially not after that training that I gave her after she became an official Dauntless member.
Disgruntled at his first failure to punch a small figured girl, I watched as he tried to sweep her onto the floor, but Tris jumped up and lashed out with a round-house kick right to his face, well aimed and perfectly timed. His nostrils flared as he tried to regain his balance.
Ha. That'll teach him a lesson, I hoped.
Tris waits and smiles with a mischievous glint in her eyes and just when Jose gains his balance, she jabs him hard in the nose, letting the momentum carry her toward Jose and then behind him, where she instantly pivots and kicks him in the small of his back. He lurches forward, clutching his bleeding nose, hunched over.
At this, I stand up and say in a loud and clear voice to all the initiates, "This is the part where the losing opponent can surrender or keep fighting until he is either dead or no longer able to fight for some other reason."
"I won't conthede do a thmall twelve year gold grll!" Jose snarls. How dare he insult Tris! I refrain from jumping up and beating him to pulp; I know Tris can handle this. She will use her size, speed, and skill to her advantage.
Jose gets up and runs to Tris.
Before I can fully register what happened, Tris has Jose on the floor, her foot on his chest.
"Concede or get knocked out, initiate," Tris barks. I know she's upset at being called a twelve year old girl, but I also know that she'll be okay. She just needs to let off some steam.
"Concede," Jose finally grumbles, and only then does Tris release him. He staggers up and then gets out of the ring. Tris is smiling, still standing the the ring.
"That was a very simply fight. I thought Jose would've been a better example. But I guess not. But to show you what a real fight would be like, I'll-"
Hestia interrupts, "Show us you and one of the Dauntless-born male initiates fight you?"
Tris turns to look at Hestia and says, "First, don't put words in my mouth. Second, why not? Go find, as you requested, a male Dauntless-born initiate for me to demonstrate a fight on. They're in Training Room One. In case you all don't know yet, this is Training Room Two."
Hestia clenched her jaw and said, "Fine, Tris."
One minute later, she returns with Skye, one of my favorite initiates. Not that anyone knew (except for Tris of course). He's really full of energy and extremely understanding. And loyal. Sometimes. Well, to the people he cares about. If you're on his bad side... Oh well. I still remember when he and some other guy, whose name I didn't bother to remember, fought last year. The fight lasted more than twenty minutes, and it was very brutal. His opponent's arm was broken, and a couple of ribs were shattered, according to Marlene who worked in the infirmary. He didn't talk to anyone for nearly a week after that brawl, except for maybe two or three people.
Anyway, Hestia's arm was looped though Skye's, and he looked very uncomfortable, glancing toward the initiates constantly from the moment he walked into the room. A second later, I realized why. Alyssa looked mad. Mad. Something must be going on between them. Maybe she's angry at Skye and doesn't wish to see him?
"So you brought Skye, huh?" Tris asks Hestia.
"Um... Why am I here?" Skye asks.
"Hestia didn't tell you?"
"No...?"
"C'mere."
"Okay..."
I tried to snuff my laughter. He was so confused that it was rather funny.
Hestia unwillingly let go of his arm as he walked to where Tris was standing, in the fighting ring.
"You, me, fight. Now," she says. She looks at me and I smile encouragingly. Skye might be a very skilled fighter, but I was confident (sort of) that Tris could subdue him. If she is quick enough.
"You want me to fight you? I might hurt you!" he protests.
"Are you scared?" Tris taunts.
"Wha-No! I might hurt you! Or injure you!"
I nod to Tris when she glances quickly at me, and she strikes at his neck with her elbow.
Skye's eyes widen considerably at the speed which Tris attacked at, and I can't help but frown a little. Everyone underestimates Tris.
"Oh it's on!" he says, his face breaking into a determined smile.
Unlike what Jose (who's sitting on the side, holding his bleeding nose) did, Skye's punches are strong and swift. But not as fast as Tris can move. Tris, the instructor. Tris, the first-ranked initiate. Tris, my fiance. She locks eyes with me and I send her a silent message. She understands, and whirls around just as Skye punches again.
He misses by an inch. Tris' hair flies up and blinds her for a moment. But that's all Skye needs. A millisecond later, Tris is on the floor, clutching her shoulder, which Skye clipped with a sharp hit. As Skye prepares to kick Tris, I can see her loosen up her fingers just a little bit and move her leg toward Skye just a little bit as well.
As he tries to hit her with a kick to her gut, she rolls away and, using her hand, pulls Skye down onto the floor. Leaping up immediately while Skye is disoriented, she hits him right in the solar plexus.
Oomph.
Crouching low, she jabs him again in the neck, her small fists easily finding that pressure point I told her about.
Ouch.
(Tris' POV)
I hope I didn't hit too hard.
Skye lies on the floor, not moving except for the slight rise and fall of his chest as he breathes, trying to regain some strength.
I jump back a few paces though, just in case he's just faking it.
I know he is when he suddenly jumps up and whirls to face me. Or where he thought I'd be. He didn't realize I'd moved behind him a few feet.
I wait for him to realize where I am, and when he does, he comes at me with a whirlwind of punches and kicks, all of which I weave and dodge through with slight difficulty. Ouch. Kick hit me in the shoulder. Oh well- not the time to dwell on the pain. Not now.
He looks at me with slight triumph in his eyes after delivering that well-aimed hook kick.
But then I immediately switch from defense to offense with that opening, coming at him with a blinding tornado of elbow strikes and kicks. He barely manages to dodge them. Must go faster. I jab with my fist, I hit with my elbow to his neck. Miss. I hit with my other elbow to his face. Miss. Let momentum spin me around, back kick at chest. Bull's eye. Hit the solar plexus.
But before I can see whether I hurt him badly or not, I notice what Tobias is doing. Still leaning against the wall.
Kissing Hestia.
I widen my eyes and stand shocked, frozen.
What?
Why?
A sob.
Then another.
And another.
He locks eyes with me.
I can tell that he wanted me to look into his eyes, understand the message he's trying to send to me.
But I can't look at him. Not while that image was carved into my memory.
I can't look at him.
I see myself pulling off that ring he gave me and throw it on the floor.
I see Hestia pull away from Tobias and look at me.
I see Skye trying to get a response out of me, other than shock.
I see Tobias pulling away from Hestia and sprinting toward me, pleading with me.
But I don't see them, really.
So I run.
I run to where Christina is teaching the other initiates, and pull her out of the room, to her apartment.
And when I finally collapse onto her bed, sobbing, I can't think of anything other than, "Why?"
A/N: DON'T KILL ME! Don't worry, something will happen later on. But I won't say anything other than that.
fanficforyou: Thanks! There's more to this thing than Hestia and Tobias kissing, I promise.
ladydragon21: I love the Selection Trilogy too! Maxerica forever! Well, it's not really a trilogy, because Kiera Cass said she's adding two more full length novels, but, ya know. Anyway... I can't WAIT until May 2015. Forgot which day it was released on. But it's in May next year. And I will buy it THE DAY it is released. It's going to be amazinggggg. I really want to see how America and Maxon would be as parents and King and Queen. And I want to see how a princess' selection is going to be like. Cuz we already know how Maxon's played out. But what if it was 35 guys instead? :D
artofskating: Something along those lines will occur in the future, that's for sure. Thank you!
DensiShipper4610: I'm so sorry I didn't see your review earlier when I updated that last chapter... But here's the response! First, thank you for reviewing and sharing your thoughts with me! Second, how do you know what happens in BoO?! Did someone spoil something for you? WHHYYYYYY?! You really like this story that much? Aww thank you :) I hope this update is soon enough! :P
hardygirl87: Oh... I should do something like that! But later on in the story, probably. But Hestia's a little too...well... pigheaded and cowardly to do such a thing. So yea. But I'll consider it! Thank you for reviewing and sharing your thoughts!
Booklover4610: Can I spoil BoO for you? Lol I'm kidding. I hate it when people spoil things for me. It's pretty good I guess, but I feel like MoA was the best in the series. HoH is a little dark (yes, I know, they're in Tartarus and all, but still. It's so... nightmarish). TLH is centered around Jason, Piper, and Leo, and not that I don't love that, but I like Percabeth better than Jasper or Leo. So the fact that TLH doesn't have him in it really upsets me, even though I see why it's necessary. And SoN is okay, but I hate how Percabeth doesn't show! I really dislike how Hera separated them. Humph. I followed your suggestion, sort of. Hestia did make Tris feel like Tobias was cheating on her. And Tris is now really upset and angered at him. But we all know that no one can truly break up Fourtris! And also...That's not true. There is no way this is as good as you claim it to be. Honestly! I'm still in school, still learning. My goal is to not only do what I love most (writing) but also become as good as other writers are (like AcademicGirl. She's amazing). Although I'm flattered, really. This is a really long response. But there's so much to say, so little time!
Oh yea, I know I updated sooner than I said, but I realized that since I have some time, why not?
Question of the Chapter:
What do you think Tris will do next?
Till next time!
