The A-Maze-Ing Race Challenge [locust]

The Swarm

She had first thought they were a swarm of locusts shrouded in black and causing destruction to everything in their path. Locusts were usually green or brownish-yellow colour, but maybe they were just too far for her to see them clearly.

As they neared she realized that they were far too large to be locusts. They were closer to the size of humans. They were shrouded in black cloaks that billowed out behind them. Sparks of light left their figures causing fires, screams and panic to break out around them, as they grew nearer she realized that they were causing people to scream and take cover wherever possible.

They were just as dangerous as the locusts that wracked the fields every year. The only difference was that these figures laughed manically and were humans that enjoyed destroying everything around them instead of animals that were merely hungry and looking for food.

They made her angry. How could they be so uncaring and wasteful? Did they know how much each person in this place had to work just so survive? How could they think so little of other human beings? Nothing made them above everyone else; if anything their actions made them less worthy of the life they had been given.

Her rage had almost overtaken her but she had been saved from her own righteous anger and possible death by the Justin yanking her into one of the deeper pathways they had dug to save a bit of water for the drought season. A spurt of fire burst above her head, missing her by a hair's breath.

In truth she was terrified. Terrified of the strange power those people had, and terrified for a future where they would potentially have to save themselves from more than hunger.
