Chapter Fourteen
As soon as Rachel and Phoenix were done talking with Shannon, the two supers exited the coach's office and entered the Gym from the boys locker room. They then exited the back double doors that led outside where they were now currently sitting against the Gyms wall, and next to the double doors they had just came out of. School was currently in its first period of the day and they were already starting their school year off by skipping. Rachel couldn't return without calming down first so they came out here; what Beiste had told her was really messing with her.
She truly was a monster; even some of the Beasts themselves thought so! It didn't really matter that she hadn't once fed on a soul; the dark matter in her veins cemented her title of monster for her. It was probably only a matter of time before the urge to feed on an innocent soul reared its ugly head. She'd didn't know what she'd do if that were to ever happen, nor did she know if her family would be able to continue to love her.
Phoenix's hand came into her line of vision, giving her a 'give me' motion as she did so, indicating what she wanted; Rachel passed the other teen the rolled lotus cigarette without hesitation. Phoenix inhaled it as she too thought about what the football coach had enlightened them on.
She has been king for many cycles, and not once has she ever heard of a light Beast not once! And now, this Malum comes along and tells her that there are many of them and that they do not feed on souls like their dark counter parts were infamous for.
How had she not known any of this?
There was no explainable reason as to why she shouldn t know of their existence. If she had, then things definitely could have been different. At least, that s what she liked to think.
"That day," Rachel started as she remembered something Phoenix had once told her. ",the day of my awakening, you told me that you didn t have the power to retransform a Beast...because of their," she paused, "because of our dark matter."
Phoenix nodded as she took one more drag of the lotus before passing it off to Rachel, who took it. "It's too powerful." She said as smoke left her lips with each word she spoke. "It fucks with a lot of my capabilities."
"So, does that mean that you can retransform a super if you wanted to?" Rachel asked
"Depends," Phoenix told the prince as she began to throw the pebbles she found in the cracks of the sidewalks.
"On what?"
"If they were born or made."
"Why would that make a difference?" Rachel asked with a furrowed brow.
"I cannot retransform a super who was born into it because it is who they are, but I can to a super who was made into one because it is only what they are." Phoenix informed the older teen as she took off her letterman and placed it behind her head to use as a pillow against the hard wall.
Rachel's eyes roamed all over as she took in the blonde's words. "That's kind of deep." She breathed.
Phoenix snickered as she stole the lotus cig that was held limply in Rachel's hand; the dark hard teen didn t even take a hit during her turn. She must didn't feel the need to smoke any more.
"It's all in the blood, junior. Our blood is what defines us, you know? It it, like, determines our journey in life." Phoenix continued on in a tone that was very much like someone who was high. With Holly's mortal blood now a part of her system, she was more susceptible to the drugs effect.
"It determined yours," Phoenix added as she looked over and down at Rachel, who was now lying on her back with her tattooed arm serving as a pillow.
"How so?" Rachel asked, intrigued. Phoenix gave a slow nod as she took one last drag before stubbing the cig out on the concrete as she prepared her thoughts.
"Ok, it's like this; you told me that your birth mom is, like, crazy talented and that she wanted to be on Broadway and stuff, right?" Phoenix asked.
"Right," Rachel nodded as she looked up and at the blue sky while listening to the other girl beside her.
"And as I understand, that was all you wanted to do in your past life."
"Yeah," Rachel confirmed with a hint of melancholy.
"You wanted all of that before you even met your mother before you even knew of her aspirations." Phoenix told her. "It's in you're blood! The very urge to perform on stage, or whatever, was passed on to you." Phoenix explained. "Genetics man, it'll always be there."
It'll always be there, Phoenix's words echoed through Rachel's mind.
"If it hadn't been in your blood, then there's a big chance you wouldn't have the talent that you've inherited from your mother; and if you didn't have that talent, then you wouldn't have felt the need to attend that camp where I found you at; and if you hadn't gone there, you wouldn't have been attacked by the Beast; and if you hadn't been attacked, then I wouldn't have made you my blood;
and if if I hadn't made you my blood, I wouldn't have brought you to Absconditus and named you prince; if I hadn't named you prince, then you never would have met Corvin; and if you hadn't met Corvin, you wouldn't have gained all the skills needed to defeat the Beast; and SHIT! I'm a fucking idiot!" Phoenix exclaimed as her whole torso shot forward, her crumpled letterman falling to her lower back.
The whole time Phoenix spoke, Rachel had listened on in amusement as she followed along to the kings lotus induced rant. Now she was wondering what caused the light bulb to go off in the blonde teen s mind just now; Rachel almost expected her to shout out 'brain blast!' as if she were Jimmy Neutron. That would have been highly amusing.
"It's in your blood!" Phoenix exclaimed as she looked out towards the football field. "It's in your blood!" she said again, her eyes wild.
"You 've said that already." Rachel told her.
Phoenix violently shook head. "You're not getting me; it's in your blood." she repeated more slowly and deliberately.
Rachel rolled her eyes with a sigh. "What's in my blood." She finally asked.
"Your mom, that's who." Phoenix answered. Rachel's brows shot up at that. Was that supposed to be some sort of your mama joke? Because its was terrible.
"Okayyy," Rachel drug out with an amused chuckle.
"You wouldn't have gone to camp Kenny if it weren't for the blood of your mother running through your veins. Now, what other part of you had the Beast attack you right after it already fed?" Phoenix asked; herself more so than Rachel. "Beasts have to wait seven days after they've taken a soul or else they ll risk the chance of being exterminated. Why? I don't know, but that's just how it is.
"What made you so special that you actually had the Beast willing to take a chance on something that could potentially kill him just so he could consume your soul? Not even a full day after it last fed, making their actions that much more risky." Phoenix eyes were unfocused as she continued to voice the rapid thoughts that were entering her mind.
"I mean, when I first found you, I wondered the same thing, but I quickly shrugged it off, thinking that you were just more pure than the usual mortal," Phoenix paused, "which could necessarily still stand, but I don't think that's it." the king mused with a shake of her head.
By now, Rachel had sat up from the ground in order to face the other girl; her heart pounded in anticipation. She had a feeling that whatever Phoenix's 'brain blast' was, it would be another life changing event for her.
"No, I think it was something in your blood that had the beast attack you." The king added as that night came back to her in vivid mind pictures as the theory forming in her mind took over.
"What? What else could have been in my blood?" Rachel asked anxiously.
Phoenix's eyes finally focused back to reality as the dark haired girl's words entered her ears. She looked over and at Rachel with hesitant eyes. "I don t know, maybe I should wait until we get home to "
"No," Rachel interrupted with a firm tone. ", just –just tell me, alright? We don't always have to be in front of a table of food for you to tell me shit."
"Yes, but this, Rachel this could cause you to beast out. And here is not the most ideal place to safely do that." Phoenix said seriously.
Rachel considered Phoenix's words for a few moments, but decided that she really needed to know what revelation Phoenix had come up with, or else she'd be anxious all day from wondering what it could possibly be. She needed to know what made her so tantalizing to the Beast that night. And besides, she had already smoked lotus so it shouldn't get too bad, but should she actually feel the need to Beast it, she'll just smoke another one be before she went off the handle.
"I can handle it please, just tell me. What's in my blood?" Rachel asked with pleading eyes.
Phoenix studied the prince with her eyes for a few tense moments before conceding and saying, "the blood of a god," in a serious tone and with equally serious eyes.
The breath left Rachel's lungs. "Taking the soul of a demigod would have made the beast more powerful than it already was, and the energy it would gain from it would last way longer than the average mortal, or super, soul."
Rachel shook her head in denial. "No, I cant be a demigod." She told the king. "Shelby would have told me if she were a goddess, no matter how estranged we may be." She shook her head once again. "No, the only godly blood I have in my veins is yours." She stressed as she reached into her pocket to pull out her pack of lotus cigs. She placed one limply in her mouth before putting the rest away.
"I'm not that type of demigod." Rachel said, the lotus cig moved limply with her bottom lip with each word she spoke. The cigarette was still unlit as Rachel tried to resist the urge to smoke it, wanting to control her beast with her own will. However, it was hard; especially with the way her tattoos were burning.
"I never said it was Shelby who was the god, and besides; I would have known if it were her just by looking at the picture you have of her in your room. That woman is not one of my mothers." Phoenix told her.
Rachel s eyes narrowed slightly as she put the lotus cig behind her ear for now. "So what your saying is; it could be one of my fathers? "
In order to have Rachel, both Berry men had given a sample of their sperm, in which had been mixed, and then inseminated into Shelby, who acted as their surrogate.
One of their sperm took, and in turn, one of them became her biological father. They never tried to find out which one of them it was; and it really could be either of them. She looked Jewish enough, and biracial enough, to pass as both of their biological child; it was something that her fathers both loved.
" Now, that is something I 'm sure my fathers would have said something about it; especially with everything that has happened to me. And I' m pretty sure you would have been able to tell if they were or not. " Rachel told the king. Her voice was desperate.
Phoenix sighed as she looked at Rachel with sad eyes. She could see the fear and dread in the dark haired girl's eyes as she desperately tried to dispute her words; Rachel knew what she was alluding to. She just didn t want to believe it.
"Rachel, I don t think your biological father is either Hiram or LeRoy." Phoenix told her gently.
Rachel continued to stare at Phoenix with hard eyes for a few moments until she stood and walked a couple of inches forward before finally lighting the lotus cig that had been behind her ear; she smoked it, taking a few long drags before finally looking back at Phoenix.
"If your theory is true, how is it that you 're just now realizing this?" She asked before looking forward once more.
Phoenix got up and joined Rachel s side. "I told you, the Beasts are the only one super race who totally messes with a lot of my capabilities. " She said before she hesitated for a few moments. " And the Beast that we 're expecting is no ordinary Beast either. I have reason to believe that he' s the host; the first Beast to be born from Livia; my son, Antonius." Phoenix finally informed Rachel.
Rachel slowly turned her head to look at the king with annoyed eyes. "Are you freaking kidding me right now, Phoenix? " Phoenix shook her head. "How long have you know this? "
Phoenix let out a guilty sigh. "I' ve suspected it may be him since the night you were attacked. The dark matter he injected you with spread thorough out your body so quickly –faster than normal, even after I urinated on your wounds so as to stall it. "
Rachel gave a disbelieving laugh as she hook her head. "And you 're just now telling me this." Rachel said accusingly before throwing her hands up in the air.
"I 'm sorry, " Phoenix said sincerely, I should have told you sooner.
" You should have, yes. You had me thinking I was just going against some regular old Beast, when in actuality; I' ll be going against the Beast. The first freaking one! "
" I was going to tell you before he came. I just didn t want you to over work yourself in preparation fro him; that wouldn t have been good. "
"But as you say; 'the Beast will come when he comes.' How exactly would you have know when to tell me before he came?" Rachel asked.
"You' re right, I wouldn t have known. " Phoenix admitted. " I should have told you from the very beginning, and I apologize for not doing so; I just didn t want you to worry too much. " Phoenix told her with sincere eyes. "But, I 'm not one hundred present certain it will be Antonius, so I didn 't want to tell you without being absolutely sure. I didn't want you to worry about it only for it to turn out to be untrue."
"But that would have been much better than not knowing at all. " Rachel countered.
"You re right, I m sorry. " Phoenix apologized once again. She really should have told her soon after her awakening.
Rachel rolled her eyes in annoyance. "Stop saying your sorry. It's getting ridiculous. " Rachel said with a huff. "Just–" She sighed as she forced herself to relax; she took another drag of her lotus. "Just tell me how you can tell if my biological father is really one of my dads or not. "
Phoenix rubbed at her neck, still feeling guilty. "Well, I 'd normally be able to smell the presences of a god in a demigod, but your dark matter is really potent; I 'd have to perform a quick ritual in order to accurately determine if you are one and who it is." The blonde teen told the prince.
Rachel ran a hand through her hair in frustration before stuffing them in her pants pocket. "I don t even know if I want to find out the results. "
Phoenix could understand that; Rachel had spent over seventeen years of her life thinking for a fact that one of the two men whom had raised her, was also her biological father. For Phoenix to tell her otherwise would not only devastate her, but the two men themselves; depending on whether or not they knew about it all.
" I know you want to continue to believe that your bio dad is truly one of your fathers, but finding the truth can help us understand a lot of things. Maybe even how bad Antonius is willing to come after you. If you have a gods blood running in your veins, besides mine, then he may come back sooner than we think. "
It would not wan't to wait in order to feed on that godly blood, even if Rachel was a half Beast now. With her (maybe) being a demigod and the blood of Phoenix, it would be like Christmas to the host if he were able to feed on the soul of someone who had the presence of two gods within her.
Rachel is silent for five minutes as she contemplates what Phoenix had just told her, all the while finishing her lotus flower. When she finally came to a decision, she dropped the cig to the ground and stomped it out with her foot.
" Fine, I' ll let you do the ritual." She said, speaking her words to the ground before lifting her head to capture Phoenix s eyes. "But whatever we find stays between us. I don t want my fathers to know if –if I 'm, you know. " Rachel said with a gesture of her hand to fill in the blanks. "It 'll kill them. "
" I understand," Phoenix said after a moment of hesitation.
Rachel laughed. "I know right? How hypocritical of me after I just yelled at you for keeping important things from me. "
"I just didn t wan't to lose you like I lost the others." Phoenix told her solemnly. "I wanted you to prepare without the distractions that knowing could have brought. My blood knew who they were going against when they got ready for the war. They worked themselves so hard that they became too distracted; they didn t see anything else but Leon, occasionally forgetting that he wasn t the only one we were fighting, and that there were others out there as well who wanted them dead just as much. " Phoenix told Rachel, lost in her memories.
"A low level super –probably a level two or three – was able to shoot all of five of them with arrows dipped in sirens blood before Leon killed them; they didn t even die on the battle field. They were so determined on defeating Leon that they didn't pay enough attention to their surroundings like they should have; and because they did nothing but train, they were too tired –especially with the poison in their system– to fight him off long enough for me to reach them in time.
"I didn t want that happening to you. I wanted you to be ready, but I didn't t wan't you to be so obsessed that you saw nothing else around you; it 's why I have no problem with us playing Hockey. We' ll have some time away from worrying about the Beast everyday. "
After hearing Phoenix s words, Rachel understood her decision a bit more. Even without knowing that her other sire could very well be the host of all Beasts, she had been very serious with her training, and still was even today. If she had known then, she would have been like the other Jr. Phoenix 's before her. She would have barely allowed herself time to relax from training; she wouldn' t have allowed herself to discover Ogygia, or even run the country as well as she did because she would have been to caught up.
"I guess I can understand why you kept it from me...it was stupid, and you really need to not keep anything of that great importance from me, but I can better understand why you did it. "
" I promise that I will not keep anything else like that from you. " Phoenix swore with a hand to her heart. "I 've
learned my lesson. " Rachel gave a nod of her head as her and Phoenix shared a quick hug to settle their differences. Besides, Rachel could never really stay too mad at Phoenix for long.
As they pulled back from the hug, Phoenix asked, "Sooo, when do you want to take this paternity test? "
" I want to get it over with...so...sometime tonight after diner with Beiste. "
" You sure? Dinner with her could prove to be very emotional for you. "
" I 'm sure, " Rachel told her. "If I don't do it then, I'll never want to find out later."
"Alright then, we ll do it tonight after dinner. " Phoenix told her just as the bell signaling the end of the first period rang. However, even so, they had yet to move even as students filed from out of the gyms back doors that were behind them. The students all gave the two girls curious glances as they went by, heading towards the main building where majority of the classrooms were at.
" Who?" Rachel asked after all of the students were gone.
"Who what? "
" Which god do you think fathered me? " Rachel clarified. Phoenix turned to look at her with serious eyes that shimmered under the sun.
"The god of the sun, prophecy, healing, and music; my father, Apollo. "
