Chapter 14: Strong Feelings and Painful Wounds
Caroline POV
Tonight was the full moon and not only was Elena in danger and about to get sacrificed on an altar, but Tyler was phasing tonight, and so there was always a chance that something could go wrong and he could get loose. I really didn't want to have to worry about dying, but the thought did cross my mind.I hadn't talked to Klaus since we, as Rebekah put it, got steamy in the pouring rain. She was so childish, but she was a good friend and unlike Bonnie, had stuck with me.
Matt was breathing down my neck. He kept asking me how I was going to save his precious Elena. Everyone was so worried about her, and to be honest it pissed me off a little. Tyler was the only one who had ever chosen me over her, well except Klaus. Klaus had his own demons to deal with and until he came to terms with them, I didn't think he would be capable of love or true happiness. Between his obsession with power and his lack of a conscious, he was quite the handful. But at the same time, he was really sweet and charming deep down. He could have anyone he wanted and yet he continued to pursue me and that made me feel really special.
I had seen those moments when he let his guard down and actually allowed himself to care. Those moments were the only thing stopping me from telling him to go to hell and forgetting about him.
When the sky started to darken, I walked Tyler to the old Lockwood property. It felt weird since we were not dating anymore, but I didn't want to leave him alone. He was still my friend and I needed the right time to tell him that Klaus was planning on using Jules in the sacrifice. Sadly she was the only one in danger of dying because Damon stupidly forced blood down Elena's throat, meaning she would come back a vampire. Maybe I could have stopped it before then, but right then my only thoughts were on Tyler.
I would help him through this, even though he claimed to not want my help. I could tell he was scared. He didn't say anything when we reached the creepy tomb, quietly preparing the chains before pulling on them lightly.
"I just wanted to double check and make sure these would hold." He finally spoke, eyeing me up and down before crying out in pain and falling to the ground.
"Tyler! What's wrong?!" I screamed at him as he rolled over onto his stomach. He tried to stand but screamed again in agony.
"It's happening faster this time. Help me get the chains on!" We quickly wrapped the chains around his wrists.
I began to panic when he fell on the floor once again. His arm made a cracking noise and he yelped in pain. His whole body started moving in unnatural angles and he screamed louder than anyone I had ever heard. I tried to wrap the chains around his ankles, but he stopped me.
"You need to leave Caroline! It's happening much faster and I don't know how to control it!" He gave me a pleading look.
"No, I'm not leaving you!" I yelled bravely.
He flashed his teeth at me, his eyes a beautiful shade of gold. They looked into mine briefly before I felt him push me back.
"Leave Caroline!" He screamed again and fell to the ground for what seemed like the hundredth time. Tears slowly crawled across my face and I continued screaming his name.
"Tyler, please! I am not leaving you!" He flashed towards me, but the chains stopped him from touching me.
He clawed at the air and screamed in pain once more. He growled at me, and I knew he didn't have control anymore. When the transition was complete, he just looked at me deeply with his wolf eyes, pulling at the chains ferociously. He managed to loosen the rusty bolt that should have been replaced. He broke free from the chains and was suddenly on top of me. He kept reaching down and trying to bite me, but my vampire strength allowed me to hold him back. I kept pushing him off of me, but he tackled me once more. Just when I thought I was going to lose the battle of strength, I heard a loud shot and saw Matt standing in the doorway of the cellar.
"Come on Caroline!" he motioned for me to leave, but I couldn't.
"He is wounded! We have to help him!" I tried to approach Tyler, but Matt pulled me back.
"Come on, Care! He will be fine, but we will be ripped to shreds if we do not leave this moment!" I reluctantly followed him through the woods, my eyes struggling to leave Tyler.
We ended up at the Lockwood estate and I was glad that Carol wasn't home. Matt raced inside and locked the door behind us. I paced the living room quickly, while Matt periodically checked the window.
"Do you think he followed us?" He asked me nervously.
As I started to respond, the window shattered and Tyler tackled me. Matt shot him within seconds and Tyler fell to the ground with a whimper.
"Are you alright Care?" He asked me cautiously.
"Yeah, yeah I fine," I mumbled, still in shock.
"What happened to your arm?" He wondered out loud.
At first I was confused, but as I looked down, I saw it.
"What are you talking ab-" I froze.
"Son of a bitch," I mumbled quietly.
"What is it Caroline?" Matt asked.
"He bit me." I said flatly.
Klaus POV
I had already killed the wolf and the vampire. All I needed was the doppelganger. I beckoned Elena with my finger, and she walked bravely past me towards Greta. The witch was still mumbling and dealing with Jenna's blood, so I began to walk leisurely over to her. As I took a few steps forward, I heard my phone ring. I grabbed it in frustration, seeing it was Rebekah.
"Not the best time, sister." I mumbled angrily.
"Nik, we have a problem and you need to get here ASAP!" She yelled at me.
"What happened?" I asked impatiently.
"It's Caroline! Tyler Lockwood bit her," She screamed.
I hung up the phone and continued the walk towards Elena. My mind was spinning and I was contemplating whether or not I should leave. I somehow could not imagine risking Caroline dying while I was off in wolf form, so the decision seemed simple.
"Elena, I am sorry to disappoint you my dear, but I must leave. I will not kill you tonight and before I go I must remind you that you are now in my debt and I will collect."
I flashed away before she could respond. I knew exactly where my angel would be, so I ran towards the Lockwood estate. When I arrived Caroline was lying on a queen size bed surrounded by Matt and a now human Tyler.
"Leave," I told them flatly. I saw the fear in their eyes when they obeyed immediately.
Caroline woke up when I spoke and she just stared at me.
"Hello love. Looks like you are in quite the predicament."
"Are you going to kill me?" she asked me wearily. Her question shocked me to the bone and I debated on multiple answers.
"Never, love. How would I win your heart if it isn't in your chest?" She smiled and chuckled, but it turned into a small cough.
"I suppose that would be quite difficult," She said through her smile.
I sat on the bed next to her and lifted her so that her head was resting on my stomach.
"Why do you want to live? Your life doesn't seem all that fulfilling. Give me a reason why I shouldn't just put you out of your misery," I said in a soft voice.
"I want more, Klaus. I want to see the world and I want to feel passion. There is so much I haven't done and too many things I haven't seen. I am not ready to die." Her words were muffled against my chest and I started twirling her hair in my fingers.
"I will show you the world, Caroline. I want to treat you like the queen you are and I hope one day you grant me my wish."
I bit into my wrist and set it gently against her mouth. She sucked greedily and I couldn't help but think of the last time she drank my blood. The circumstances were a million times different, but somehow we ended up here again. She stopped after the bite had healed and fell asleep in my arms. I tried to sleep, but couldn't. I found myself just listening to her soft breaths and quiet whimpers that escaped her dreams. I just watched her sleep and wondered what tomorrow would bring.
