"Why did you do this?"
Her voice rings in my ears.
"Why do you choose to ignore our help?
I hear her voice in my dreams.
"Why do you believe you can't be changed?"
She knows I can't be redeemed. I told her, I showed her. She still won't let me go. Why does she have to be so stupid? I can't give in again, I could kill her. She knows I can kill her, why won't she listen?
"I'm not afraid of you."
She is now, right?
"Everyone can be redeemed, Vanitas."
Surely she was wrong.
"I know the real you, I"m not afraid of what you hide behind. You can become yourself again, you just have to try."
How much more do I have to do to show that I'm not who I was? That I can't be that again? Surely she knows all this, right?
"...The most important part."
"Sorry, Xion. I failed," I put on my sunglasses and leave the house, heading out into the street. I don't know where I'm going, but I can't stay there. Everything is just too perfect. I stand out more than I should, and I don't want to be there anymore. I walk for awhile, not really going anywhere, just trying to get away, and I end up running into someone I didn't expect to see back here.
"Vanitas?"
I look up to see Zexion standing in front of me, "Zexion.. How.. Are you okay?"
He nods slowly, "Yeah.. I'm fine. No thanks to you."
I frown, "Sorry. I was trying to scare you and Xion into leaving town.."
"Hell of a way to scare us," he replies bitterly.
"I'm sorry, Zexion," I frown, Why am I apologizing to him? I sigh and groan softly, "Look, just go back home. I'm not who I was, and I won't go back to being that person, I cant. So, just leave here, and leave me."
I walk past him then. He turns and grabs my arm, "Vantas, wait."
Why don't they listen? I sigh, "What?"
"I spoke with Xion. I know what you did," he says.
I turn to look at him, "So? I'm a monster, so what should it matter what I do anymore?"
"It matters because we know who you were. I don't see how turning into an Incubus can change you so drastically," he replies.
"I change based upon what kind of Incubus I have matured into. I'm not like most of my kind, so I'm unsure of what I'm supposed to be, and whatever changes happen I just accept them," I state.
he shakes his head, "That isn't smart. Vanitas, what you've become isn't even you anymore."
"This is who I am, and it's not going to change," I say.
"Why are you so bent on being a monster?!" Zexion punches me across the face, "She believes in you and you do this?! You're not worthy of our friendship!"
"Maybe I'm not.." I say, "That's what I've been saying to you two since this began."
He glares at me, "I won."
I blink slowly, "What?"
He turns away from me and starts walking away, "I won the contest. In case you were wondering, which I doubt."
I stare after him and frown, "He won? I never read that poem he entered.."
My phone rings and I pull it from my pocket to find that it's Sora who's calling me. I answer the call, "What, Sora?"
"We're worried about you, where'd you go?" he asks.
"I just went for a walk," I reply, "I'll be back in a little bit. I'm heading back now.."
I turn and head back the way I came, noticing Zexion's already out of my line of vision. I get back to my uncle's house and I go inside. Everyone's waiting for me it seems, and Dad's the first one to speak, "We need to talk about your behavior, Vanitas."
I nod slowly, "So let's talk."
We go to the living room and I sit on the couch and everyone sits around me. I groan softly, Oh great, it's an intervention. Again, Dad's the first to speak, "Aerith told me you hit her?"
"I did. I had a burst of anger, and I took it out on her, and on Larxene," I reply.
He frowns, "I see. And you're always sneaking out late and not coming back until daylight?"
"I have to feed," I state plainly.
"Feeding doesn't take that long, and I know how little feeding sessions can keep an Incubus alive, you seem to be over feeding. Care to explain why?" he asks.
"Feeding makes me feel powerful and I liked that. I fed to feel the power," I say.
"You're abusing your powers as an Incubus," my father's eyes narrow.
"I wasn't aware there were boundaries for my powers," I smirk.
"There are few, but you've seemed to have crossed them all," he sighs, shaking his head, "This isn't what I wanted for you, Vanitas."
"You didn't want me to become a monster? Because that's what I am now," my eyes narrow and Dad's eyes widen, "What? A monster? What are you saying?"
"I'm saying that I'm a monster. I hurt people just because I can, I kill people just to feel powerful. I drain everything from my food sources and I like it, because it feels good. I don't care who I hurt, just as long as I get what I came for," I reveal, "What do you call that? I all it monster."
Everyone was speechless for a moment, and to my astonishment, it's Sora who speaks next, "You don't have to be a monster. We.. We can help you."
I chuckle bitterly, "Again with those words."
