He had gotten worse.

Ruby tried to visit him as much as possible, but there were some days he barely even woke up. The green-haired boy mostly slept the day away. Sometimes, Ruby figured that it was better that he was asleep; when he was awake, all he did was cough violently.

But even through all the coughs and snivels and tears, he would just smile. Wally had that confidence. Smiling was okay because eventually, he would get better. He didn't have any doubts, even when the doctors tried to tell him otherwise.

There were even days he stumbled outside, declaring that he was gonna continue on his journey. Ruby would have to drag him back and threaten to tie him to the bed, something he thought he would never have to say to anyone besides Sapphire when she was being rambunctious for whatever new reason of the day.

But he would always make sure to promise him that he would certainly be able to travel once he got over his sickness. Hell, Ruby said he would even join him (mostly because while Wally wanted to be a Trainer, Ruby wanted to assure him that there were also other things that he could do with his Pokémon, like contests).

And Wally would cough a bit before finally smiling and saying, "of course!"

Ruby was never sure how Wally could just continue to smile, but maybe he figured it was his way of powering through. Things may be terrible now, but there's an adventure waiting for him once he recovers.

But one day, Ruby blurted it out.

"How can you smile so much, Wally?"

It was then that Wally actually dropped the smile to stare at the crimson-eyed boy curiously. Wally quickly picked it back up, probably the biggest smile Ruby had ever seen on him.

"Because my best friend is by my side!"

Ruby felt his heart skip a beat and his own mouth turned upwards. "Heh, well of course! I guess I just have that effect, huh?"

Wally chuckled for a moment. "You help me feel better just by being here. I can't help but smile!"

He threw a hand over Wally's and grinned widely. Ruby could only feel excited knowing that his existence caused Wally to always be happy, even through the worst of times.
