Run, Runaway – Chapter 14
Skylar stood in front of her open bedroom window looking out into the dark night, she'd called into work that night.
She could hear a howl in the distance and she felt the urge to go to it.
Her eyes widened as she realized it must be the alpha calling her out. She remembered being on the bus where the driver had been attacked and sensing that her brother had been there trying to help the driver.
Pinning her eyes shut she took a deep breath and picked up her zip-up hoodie from her bed.
After zipping it up, she pulled the hood up and decided she would go to the alpha, but only to help whoever his next target was.
Eyeing the ground below the window, she jumped out and landed perfectly on her feet.
Slowly, a cocky smile spread over her lips, maybe some parts of being a werewolf weren't so bad.
She was able to run faster than she had in her entire life and her muscles weren't feeling achy or tired as she finally reached the school.
Making her way through the dark hallways she paused and listened and she could hear a deep voice saying, "Turn around Adrian, turn around and I'll show you."
"Adrian?" She mumbled under her breath as she headed up the stairs.
"Please… don't kill me." She could hear her chemistry teacher, Mr. Harris say. His voice shaky from fear.
As she made it the classroom door she gasped as she saw the alpha pick up a desk and start to throw it at him.
She ran towards, Mr. Harris but before she could push him out of the way someone yelled. "Get down." And knocked them both to the ground.
Looking up she saw Derek as he stood up and looked around, but the alpha was gone.
"Skylar?" Mr. Harris asked shocked as he saw her stand up.
Pulling the hood back up on her head she looked at Derek confused, wondering if he was on their side or the alpha's side.
Just then the dark room was illuminated by head lights and someone on a megaphone yelled, "This is the police. You're surrounded, no one leave the building."
Derek turned and bolted from the room with Skylar right on his heels, she still wasn't sure if he was helping the alpha or not. But she wasn't about to try and explain to the police why she was at school after hours again.
Hearing footsteps behind him Derek looked over his shoulder to see Skylar was managing to keep up pace with him.
Then he saw police cars whip around the corner in hot pursuit of them.
"What are you doing?" Derek asked Skylar as she was now running beside him.
"What were you doing at the school?" she questioned him back.
But he didn't get a chance to answer as police cars came in the opposite direction, both of them trying to skid to a stop.
Skylar put a hand on her hood as she turned and ran right, Derek fell as he tried to come to a stop but was immediately back on his feet only a few steps behind her.
He thought to himself there was no way she was human and running that fast.
She continued to run a few steps in front of him with a hand on her hood hoping it wouldn't fall off and reveal to the police who she was.
As they headed into the ironworks the police released two of the dogs after them.
Derek stopped and turned around, his eyes glowing blue as he hissed at them. Both dogs stopped and ran back the other way, whimpering and whining as they did.
"Where the hell are we going?" she asked, starting to feel out of breath.
Derek looked around and shook his head, he had no idea where he was going to go from there.
"Well, we can't just stay here!" Skylar exclaimed frustrated, knowing the police would be closing in at any second.
"You think I don't know that? I'm the one on run from the cops, not you. I don't even know what the hell you're doing here!" He yelled back at her as he ran a hand through his hair.
Before they could say anything else, Chris Argent fired a flash bomb tipped arrow at Derek and the other werewolf.
It exploded on contact with the forklift behind them.
Skylar stared at Chris Argent wide eyed and then looked back to Derek as he groaned and seemed unable to see anything.
"Skylar… get down." He said in a pained voice as he blinked rapidly trying to focus his eyesight.
Seeing Mr. Argent load another arrow in his crossbow, she looked back to Derek who was still fighting to regain his senses.
"You get down." She said back as she pushed him out of the path of the arrow just in time.
Finally able to see some, he looked at her confused.
Moments ago when hey were running he was positive she was a werewolf, but now he wasn't sure again as the flash bomb had no effect on her.
Skylar started to move back around the forklift to see what Chris Argent was doing now, in case he was closing in on them.
But Derek pulled her back down beside where he was crouched and said, "Stay down."
Hearing a car approaching they looked up to see Derek's Camaro as Stiles opened the passenger door and yelled get in.
Skylar looked at Derek, not sure if it was worth it to run for the car.
Standing up, he grabbed her arm and raced towards the car as Mr. Argent now used a machine gun trying to wound the two werewolves.
Derek pushed Skylar into the open door, and jumped in the car himself as she immediately jumped into the backseat beside Stiles.
Scott sped off and stiles looked at the person beside him.
Taking a deep breath and trying to calm herself she finally pulled her hood down.
"Skylar?" Stiles gasped, unable to hide his surprise.
Looking back in the back seat Scott's eyes widened, "What are you doing here?"
She didn't answer as Derek exclaimed, "Damn it, I almost had him."
"Who, the alpha?" Stiles asked as he leaned forward between the seats.
"Yes! He was right in front of me and the freaking police showed up!" Derek yelled.
"Oh, hey… they're just doing their jobs." Stiles defended.
When Derek shot him an un-amused look he sat back and looked at Skylar as she sat quietly in the backseat.
"Yeah, thanks to someone who decided to make me the most wanted fugitive in the entire state." Derek said looking to Scott.
"Can we seriously get past that? I made a dumbass mistake, I get it." Scott said as he looked over to the older beta in the passenger seat.
"All right, how did you even find him?" Stiles asked.
Derek turned slightly and looked back to Skylar as she stared back at him, eyes slightly narrowed.
"What were you doing there?" He asked her.
When she didn't respond, Scott said "What the hell were you both doing at the school?"
When neither Derek or Skylar responded, Scott groaned and raised his voice "Someone has got to start talking."
Then focusing his attention on Derek he said, "Can you try to trust us for at least half a second?"
"Not until she talks." Derek admitted, remembering just days before when he'd explained himself to her and she refused to tell him anything.
"Why should I trust any of you?" She asked, but her kept her gaze steady on Derek.
Who sighed and turned around, facing away from her.
"Uh, hello! I'm your friend, I've known you almost your entire life!" Stiles exclaimed, not sure what was going on with her.
"Yeah, and yet you had no problem lying to me… so excuse me if I'm a little reluctant to jump back on the friend wagon with you." She said, her tone a little harsher than she'd meant it to be.
Stiles shook his head and started to say something, but stoped as he looked at Derek, who was missing his signature leather jacket.
"How do you two even know each other?" Stiles managed to ask as he remembered Skylar stumbling out of the woods wearing only a leather jacket that was way too big on her.
"We don't." She responded.
"You really wanna stick with that answer when just a few days ago you came out of the woods wearing nothing but…" He started to say, but her eyes widened and she elbowed him in the side.
Groaning in pain he shot her a look as he held onto his now aching side.
"Whoa… what?" Scott asked, briefly swerving into the other lane for a few seconds.
"I was at the school… because I… followed the alpha there." She admitted.
"What? By yourself, why would you do that?" Scott asked, panic in his voice.
"Like I said I still don't trust either of you… and Isaac won't talk to me." She said, sadly as she stared down to her lap.
"You can't do that, Sky! You have to stay away from him… whoever he is." Scott exclaimed as she Stiles continued to stare at her wide eyes.
Rolling his eyes with irritation at all of them, Derek said "Look, the last time I talked to my sister, she was close to figuring something out. The first was a guy named Harris and the second was…"
Before he continued, Stiles leaned back between the seats and said, "Our chemistry teacher, Mr. Harris?"
"Why him?" Scott questioned.
"I don't know yet!" Derek snapped.
Pulling a paper from his pocket he said, "The second thing was some kind of symbol."
As Scott looked over at the paper he closed his eyes and said, "I've seen it before…"
Leaning forward over the seat and plucking the paper from Derek's hand Skylar said, "Allison's necklace…"
Turning back around Derek jerked the paper from her fingers and tucked it back in his pocket as he said to Scott, "You have to get it."
~(The next day at school)~
As Skylar was sitting at a lunch table by herself when Stiles and Scott scrambled into chairs at the same table.
She looked between them with raised eyebrows.
"Do you have any idea what you've done?" Scott asked as he opened his bottle of water and drank half of it down.
"What?" She asked.
"Do you know what Jackson is doing?" Stiles asked her with a mouth half full of fried chicken.
"Being a cocky son of bitch?" She sarcastically replied.
"Besides that! He's threatening me… he wants to be turned." Scott explained his voice a hushed whisper.
She let out a small sigh and looked at him as she frowned and replied honestly, "I'm sorry… I didn't mean to tell him about you."
"Then why did you? If he tells Allison and her dad finds out… I'm dead!" Scott exclaimed.
"Literally dead." Stiles agreed nodding.
"Because I was drunk and upset; if I could go back I wouldn't say a thing to him about it, but honlestly… he was bound to find out." She defended.
"That doesn't matter!" Scott said; right now the worst possible thing he could think of was Allison knowing his secret, he'd never get her back then.
Repeating what Scott had said in the car to Derek she said, "I made a dumbass mistake, okay? Can we just get past it?"
Both boys sighed heavily and Stiles said, "It's so obvious you're the little sister… the annoying little sister."
Finishing her bottle of water she stood up and said, "I'm only younger by minutes…"
~()~
That evening Skylar was sitting in her room at her desk, staring at the blank word document that should have been a 3 page essay by now.
But she was too distracted and she felt terrible for everything that was going on.
Isaac still wouldn't talk to her, he was too ashamed and embarrassed that she knew his secret. But to her, it just seemed like he was mad at her.
Jackson was not only trying to make Scott's life hell, he had also dumped Lydia in preparation to use Allison against Scott.
And even though she was putting up a front, she knew deep down that it was all basically her fault.
It wasn't much later that she shut her laptop and sighed at herself, knowing she needed to be honest and tell Scott who the alpha was.
But as she stood up from her desk she turned around and gasped as she saw Derek.
"Wh-what are you doing here?" She managed to stutter out, still taken aback.
"I don't know what it is… but it's pretty damn obvious that you're hiding something." He said as he took a few steps forward, intending on intimidating the teen if he had to.
She didn't back away as she said, "It's a little suspicious you just happened to be in the woods and at the school at the same time as the alpha."
"I already explained…" He started to remind her of how he'd explained himself, but she hadn't when it dawned on him that he hadn't even known then the alpha was in the woods that night.
"What do you mean in the woods at the same time as the alpha?" Derek questioned.
She could tell the look on his face was genuine.
"You didn't know…" She breathed out, feeling like an idiot.
"Do you know who the alpha is?" Derek asked, wondering how out of all of them it was her who knew the truth.
She nodded as tears burnt her eyes.
"Who is it?" He asked.
She stared down to the floor not responding.
"Who is it?" Derek demanded to know.
Finally she sighed and said, "Peter Hale."
"My uncle?" Derek asked, shocked.
Taking a few steps back Derek said, "Oh my god."
"I'm sorry!" She exclaimed.
Then it occurred to him that Stiles was on his way to the hospital, after they'd determined with Danny's help that the text supposedly came from Scott's mom.
As he turned to leave she said, "Where are you going?"
"Stiles is on his way to the hospital." Derek admitted.
Gasping Skylar started after him as she said, "But he's supposed to be playing in the game tonight!"
When he realized that she was following him he turned and said, "Just, stay here… stay out of the way. You've done enough."
A hurt expression fell over her face as she thought of how she might have unintentionally put Stiles' life in danger.
Seeing his leather jacket laying on a chair inside the door of her room, he grabbed it and stormed off.
