"You're…you're…alive?" Petunia croaked. Behind her, Vernon stood with his mouth open.
"Yes, yes, we're alive and it is unbelievable, yes, yes, whatever. But I'm not here to deliver the good news, Petunia. I'm here about my son."
"Your son? He cannot be your son. Petunia, we cannot entertain this nonsense, they were clearly sent here to trick us, in some way, maybe out of money or something- but no sir! We will not be fooled by this crackpot old rubbish! No sir! Not me!" He spluttered, saliva flying out of his mouth, massive face red with veins popping. "Now get off my doorstep, before I call the police on you ruffians!"
"No, Vernon-"Petunia said weakly, face white as a sheet and tottering on her feet. "Wait…how else would they know, I mean, we don't talk about it."
"They had all sorts of crazy friends, maybe one of them thought this would be funny. Well it is not!"
"We haven't got time for this- I want to go home with my son and my husband, alright? So just let us in, and the sooner we come in the sooner we'll go." Lily said, frustrated.
"Plus there's something we need to talk to you about." James added sharply. "It won't take long."
"Why…why do you need to come in?"
"To get Harry's things," Lily said impatiently. "He's moving into James' house with us."
"He's…he's moving out?" Petunia's eyes were wide.
"This…this is preposterous!" Vernon burst out. "No! No! I am not allowing you into my house!"
"Vernon, please, just give them a chance. If this is my sister-"
"You hated your sister!" Vernon shouted, eyes wild.
Petunia looked equally as furious. "But I never wanted her to die!"
Lily took a step back, and she was trembling, her face pale and angry.
"Where is my son's bedroom?"
"I'll show you." Petunia said quietly, looking slightly ashamed.
Lily pushed past Petunia's husband into the house. Vernon Dursley looked as if he were about to explode, blustering, "What…what are you…Petunia!"
"Be quiet Vernon!" She snapped as her and Lily made their way upstairs.
James folded his arms and glared at Vernon, making sure not to touch the doormat as he stood out in the driveway. "Oh yeah, Dursley, I had something to ask you. Who the hell do you think you are?"
"In here," Petunia gestured to the small bedroom, which was still full of Dudley's old toys. The space Lily's son had taken up wasn't even half the room, with only his bed, the old broken wardrobe and a makeshift bedside table to his name. Lily frowned at the cluttered space, looking angry, then opened the door to the wardrobe, kneeled down and began to pull out the few of Dudley's hand-me-down clothes in there.
"I…I can't believe you're alive." Petunia said hoarsely. "After all those years…"
"I can't believe that you made my son sleep in the cupboard under the stairs!" Lily fired back furiously, flinging the baggy, discoloured trousers she was holding down onto the bed and standing up, rounding on her sister. "How dare you! Who do you think you are? He was a child! He still is a child! My child!"
"Lily-"
"I know you never really liked me but- all I did was try to get on with you! But you never accepted me- never! But I could look past that, I'd come to terms with that- but to mistreat my son after he had lost both of his parents…are you that cruel? If you and your precious Vernon had died," She hissed. "I would have looked after your child as if he were my own. I would have loved him and cared for him, and you locked my Harry in a cupboard and starved him!" Lily was crying. "You shouldn't even be allowed to parent your own child if you think that's acceptable! You put bars on his window! You may not have liked James much, or even me, much, but Harry had done nothing to you, apart from having our surname! How dare you!"
Petunia went to say something, but Lily glowered fiercely at her, eyes swimming with tears, so she shut her mouth. Lily start throwing the clothes over her arm, and then stopped, held a jumper up and scoffed. "I mean…what is this? You didn't even give him proper clothes! You…you…"
Lily scooped up the clothes, lip curled in disgust, and quickly scanned the rest of the room.
"Living amongst your son's junk." She whispered.
Lily wiped her tears and shook her head bitterly, staring a shell-shocked Petunia dead in the eyes.
"You're not my sister anymore, are you? You're not Petunia. You can't be. The Tuney I knew would never…she would never… He's my son, Petunia. My baby. How could you…"
"I'm sorry." Petunia croaked. "I'm sorry."
Lily's green eyes were sad.
"That's not good enough."
The sounds of shouting came from downstairs, and Lily rushed past her, down the stairs.
"You treated him like he was nothing! My son!"
James snarled, and Vernon roared, saliva flying from his mouth, face purple with exertion.
"How dare you speak to me in such a manner, sir! In my own home! And I will treat your son however I want to in my house! Especially if that son is also some kind of ungrateful freak like his father!"
"I can't bear to imagine what your son must be like if he's anything like his father!"
Lily walked quickly between them, and put both of her hands on James' chest. "James! James, stop."
"Vernon!" Petunia hurried out, clinging to her husband's arm. "Vernon! You'll wake the neighbours!"
"Did you hear him?" James implored to Lily. "Did you hear what he said?"
"Yes, I did. Don't bother wasting your breath on him. They're not worth our time."
James took a deep breath and took some of the clothes out of Lily's arms. Petunia, still hanging off Vernon's arm in the driveway, suddenly asked, looking fearful, "You're leaving?"
"Good!" Vernon shouted. "Good! Get out of my house!"
"Vernon!" Petunia hissed. "The neighbours!"
"They're not worth it." Lily whispered, more to herself than to James, as they walked away from the house. "They're not worth it."
