Chapter 13

People were going crazy. Mom and dad were on the phone 24/7 talking to lawyers and all of my friends kept trying to get me to go out and celebrate. I didn't want to do that, though. I just wanted to sleep. I haven't ever been like this before. I've been sad before, but never this sad. Mom took me to a therapist. He said I was depressed. I shouldn't be depressed. I should be happy. William Bellview was behind bars. The reporter was right; he had gotten the death sentence. He would be gone within a week. But still even that couldn't make me happy. It was like someone was putting thoughts in my head. Making the world dark. My cell phone started to ring.

"Hey Kim," I said.

"Hi Riley! I was just wondering if you wanted to babysit Faith."

I wanted to say no. I wanted to stay in my bed in the dark. But I knew I was scaring people. Never leaving my room was scaring Seth and Becca and everyone.

"Sure! I'd love to!" I'm a liar. That was a lie.

"Thanks so much! Faith has been keeping us up all night. I mean I love her, but it'd be nice if she could learn how to sleep. Could you come by around five?" she asked.

"Yeah. I'll go get ready."

"Thanks again, see you at five!"

"Anytime. See you then," I hung up the phone and fell back down into my bed. Get up Riley. Get out of your bed now. UP! I took a deep breath and pulled myself out of bed making my way over to the bathroom and taking a quick shower. I pulled on some jeans, a long black sweater shirt, and some toms then went downstairs. I told my mom I was going over to Kim's and then grabbed my car keys and left.

Jared and Kim lived in a little house not too far away from Emily's. It was a bright white with green trimmings and a dark green door. Kim had a little garden out in the front. It was sweet and pretty and gave me a headache. I plastered on a smile and walked up to the door, knocking three times.

"Hey Riley!" Kim said, opening the door. She was holding Faith on her hip.

"Hey Kim. Hey Faith."

She grabbed my hand with her free hand and pulled me inside. She was wearing a fancy looking dress and Jared was standing near the door checking his watch.

"Alright, so her formula is in the fridge. When you're heating up the up the bottle don't use the microwave! We have an electric warmer next to the microwave. Use that for five minutes. If you do it longer it'll be too hot and it'll burn her tongue. Also her favorite toys are right over there. She loves the purple bunny. She won't be able to fall asleep unless you read her A Little Bit of Winter. She loves that book and-" Kim said.

"Kim, honey, we should really go. If we don't we'll miss our reservation," Jared said.

"Sorry. Let's go. Bye Riley," she said walking out the door with Faith.

"Um, Kim?" Jared said.

She turned around and walked back in, "Oh um sorry. You probably need her," she said, handing me Faith.

I smiled, "Yeah. You two have a good time," I said. They nodded and started walking out the door.

"Bye Faith! We'll be back in a little while. Mommy loves you!" Kim said over her shoulder. I shook my head and looked over at Faith. "I'm pretty sure there's a name for what just happened," I told her. She giggled and blinked her black eyes. I bounced her on my hip and walked over to the couch. I grabbed the remote and clicked on the TV.

"Think your mom would get mad if I rotted your brain?" Faith smiled. "Didn't think so." I rocked her in my arms until she fell asleep and watched reruns of Sabrina the Teenage Witch. I glanced down at baby Faith and wondered what my problem was. My life was good. I had a boyfriend and a best friend. I went to a decent school. The man who hurt me years ago was going to die soon. I was holding a sweet, adorable little baby girl but for some reason I was sad.

"I don't know what's wrong with me," I said to the baby. I sighed and took her nursery, setting her down in her bubble gum pink crib.

"Hey Riley," I heard a sweet, pretty voice say.

I spun around and stood protectively in front of Faith's crib, "Maggie Gate," I said breathlessly.

"Hey honey. Miss me?"

Oh god. She looked like a monster. A beautiful, evil monster. Her hair was long and dark blonde. Her skin was pale and looked like porcelain. Her eyes… her eyes were like red rubies.

"Stay away," I said, trying to protect Faith.

"Please, if I wanted the little brat I'd have her. What I want it to talk to you. Do you know what I am?" she asked.

I didn't hesitate. I've been with Seth long enough to know this. "Vampire."

She grinned, showing me a perfect set of white teeth, "Good girl. It happened a couple years ago to Willy and me. Did you know some of us have a little extra ability?" I didn't answer, "I can't be tracked. The wolves won't know I'm here. And you won't tell them. If you do, I'll kill the kid. And your mommy and your daddy."

I looked down, "I won't tell."

She suddenly blurred over to me, "Will and I are having some fun. But he's getting bored. So I just wanted to say goodbye."

"Goodbye?" I asked.

She smiled, "Goodbye," she said and disappeared. What the hell just happened? They were having fun? Why did she say goodbye? I shook my head and heard the door open. I ran downstairs and saw Kim and Jared standing in the doorway. Jared was a wolf. He should smell Maggie. He didn't.

"I thought you guys would be gone longer," I said.

"We were, but I missed my little Faith," Kim told me, "Where is she?"

"In her room," I said. Kim smiled and ran up the stairs.

Jared walked up to me and pulled out his wallet, "Thanks again. We really needed to get out. How much was it?"

I shook my head and held up my hands, "Nothing. It was a freebe. But next time, I expect a hundred dollars an hour."

He rolled his eyes, "Of course. Do you want a ride home?"

"No thanks, I drove here. See you tomorrow?" I asked. He nodded.

"Goodnight."

"Night."

I left the door and got into my car. Jared didn't even notice that Maggie was there. Seth said a wolf could smell a vampire from a mile away, but Jared didn't even notice Maggie. And what did she want? Goodbye? I don't understand. As I drove back to my house trying to see through the snow I was hit by another roll of sadness.
