Turnabout Star Bits Part 3

August 22, 10:00 A.M. District Court Defendant Lobby No. 1

After the trail, Toadsworth looked disconsolate as Phoenix looked at him, feeling uneasy. "Uh... Toadsworth? Are you okay?"

Toadsworth looked at Phoenix and said "Hmm? Oh, ahem! Y-yes, I-I'm quite fine, thank you. I'm just worried about Masters Mario and Luigi. Mostly Luigi." He rubbed the head of his cane as he was deep in thought. "He is a very sensitive young man, and the thought of him being interrogated just gives me the butterflies something awful."

"Yeah... You and me both." Said Phoenix, looking down in shame. 'All aboard the guilt express. Passenger, Phoenix Wright.'

Toadsworth then had a face of determination as he said "However, we can't just stand idly feeling terrible about it!"

Hearing that made Phoenix feel determined as well. "Your right! We have to go and find evidence leading to the truth. The only question is, where do we look now?"

Toadsworth rubbed his chin in thought as he said "The idea that Bowser's vessel keeps disappearing and reappearing is very intriguing to me. Perhaps we should investigate that first."

"Sounds like a good plan. But before that, I think maybe we should tell the princess of what's happened today." Said Phoenix.

Toadsworth widened his eyes in realization and said "Oh! Right you are! I'm embarrassed that I have not thought about it myself."

"You guys going somewhere?" They heard a monstrous voice ask. They turned to see Bowser standing right there. "Those stupid guards are gonna take me back to the detention center. So I just wanted to know before then."

Before they could answer, Phoenix and Toadsworth talked to each other in hush voices. "What do you think, Toadsworth? Should we tell this guy that we're going to see the princess?"

"I am on the same page as you are, Wright." Said Toadsworth. "But regardless, no matter how annoying it may be, it would be rather unfair to keep Bowser in the dark. He is your client after all."

"I hate to admit it, but you make a good point."

Bowser then got their attention by saying "Ahem, hello! It's rude to have private conversations in front of a king!"

Phoenix and Toadsworth reacted with nervousness as Toadsworth said in excuse "Oh, uh... beg our pardon, your rudeness! We were simply thinking of where to go to first before we could answer. It's that right, Mr. Wright?"

'Nice save, Toadsworth.' Phoenix thought sarcastically. 'Then again, I might not have been able to think of a better excuse.' "Uh... yeah. Of course we were. See, we just thought of going to the palace to see how the princess is doing."

Intrigued, Bowser smirked while rubbing his chin and said "Oh really? If that's the case, then could you do a favor for me?"

"Do I even wonder what it could be?" Phoenix thought aloud in annoyance.

"If you meet the princess, could you tell her Bowser sends his best regards and affections?" Bowser requested with a goofy smile.

'At one point he's intimidating, the next, he's completely obnoxious.' "Sure, uh... We'll let her know what you said." Phoenix assured.

They then heard a guard said nervously "Er... e-excuse us? Y-Your awesomeness... sir? It's uh... time to head back to the um... detention center."

Bowser made a grumpy frown as he said "Yeah, yeah. I'm commin." Before he left, the Koopa King stopped midway and turned to Phoenix and said "Oh, yeah! Before I forget. Lawyer!"

Phoenix snapped in attention as he said "Uh... Yeah?"

"Your doing a fine job, so far, defending my name and all." Said Bowser, before he gave Phoenix an intimidating eye. "But, if you slip up tomorrow, I can guarantee, there will be some munching and grinding at the end of the road!"

"Ngh... Y-Yeah. I'll keep that in mind." Said Phoenix.

"You'd better. Alright, take me away, boys!" Bowser said as the guards took him out the door.

"Well, there he goes."

"We'd best be on our way as well, Mr. Wright." Said Toadsworth.

Phoenix snapped out of his terrified state and said "Er, right. I'm ready if you are." They wasted no time to leave the court house and head right to Toadstool Castle.

August 22, 10:11 Mushroom Kingdom Star Carnival

Phoenix looked around the deserted streets as he said "Just as I thought, there's barely anybody here. It's so quiet compared to that night."

"It has been cleared out for police inspection, so it wouldn't surprise me that there are hardly any people out today." Said Toadsworth.

"Didn't Luigi say in his testimony that he was checking somewhere near a pawn shop?" Phoenix wondered.

"Hmm... Yes, he did. But, why are you asking about that?" Toadsworth asked.

"Luigi mentioned that the shop keeper was a female. Normally, no one would immediately think of a woman when they hear pawn shop owner. Er, not to sound all sexist here."

"That is a very valid point, Mr. Wright." Said Toadsworth rubbing his chin. "One wouldn't guess the gender unless they see the person or hear their voice."

"Since we're here, maybe we could check out that pawn shop for ourselves." Said Phoenix.

"Well, I do hate to keep the princess waiting, but perhaps we can do a quick little check." Said Toadsworth as they went to go look for the said shop.

August 22, Pawn Shop Tent

When they arrived, they found what appeared to be a tent that was designed to look like a ship cabin with a sign above that says 'Syrup Pawn Shop.' Phoenix and Toadsworth were honestly perplexed of what they were seeing. "Uh... this is the pawn shop Luigi mentioned? It looks more like it's part of a pirate theme park attraction."

"It does indeed. And the name of this shop. It says syrup, though I hardly see anything that relates to syrup, or sweets of any sort." Said Toadsworth. "But, criticism aside, this must be the right place. I say we should speak to the owner right now."

"Your right. The sooner, the better." Phoenix said as he and Toadsworth approached the front counter. "Uh... Hello? Is anyone here?" They waited for someone to appear or at least answer, but nothing happened. "Huh... No response."

"It would seem that she is out for the time being. I say we should come back to try again later." Said Toadsworth.

"Yeah, that's probably a good idea." Said Phoenix as they turned around to walk away.

But before they could even take a step, they heard a feminine voice speak "Yes, may I help you boys?" They turned around and were greeted by a long redhead woman in the attire of a pirate in purple, complete with a bandanna, and she also wore lipstick.

Phoenix and Toadsworth looked transfixed of the woman's appearance. 'Wow! This is the pawn shop owner? She's... She's gorgeous.' Phoenix thought to himself.

"By George...! She is like a goddess to beheld." Toadsworth said aloud.

"Are you just going to stand there drooling, or can I help you with something?" The woman asked.

Toadsworth snapped out of his staring state as he said "Oh! Er... Actually, madame, we are off investigating the surrounding areas. Isn't that right, Mr. Wright?"

Phoenix also snapped out of his gazing as said "Huh? Oh! Uh... Yeah! That's right! My name is Phoenix Wright, attorney at law."

The woman made a smirk as she said "Oh, I see. So you are the one taking the case for that big lizard, are you?"

"Regrettable as it is, yes I am." Phoenix confirmed.

"Hmm... I must say, it's always a pleasure to meet such a cute lawyer like as you." Said the woman, making Phoenix blush in modesty.

'Heh. Well, I guess I do have good looks, as far as they come.' Phoenix thought with a goofy smile.

"Ahem, Mr. Wright? I understand that you are transfixed with this vixen, but please, try to stay focused on the case at hand." Said Toadsworth.

Phoenix shook off from his flustered state as he said "Oh, yeah. Sorry." 'But weren't you just as captivated by this woman as you are, ya old coot?'

The woman shunned in offense at what Toadsworth called her and said "How rude! I am no vixen! I am Captain Maple Syrup, thank you very much! If you wish to make a good deal, I suggest you mind your manners!"

Realizing how intimidating she was, Toadsworth flinched nervously and bowed his head quickly. "Ah! Um... My most humblest apologies, madame! I meant no disrespect!"

Syrup decided to let it slide as she said to Phoenix "So, I take it you're here to count me as a witness?"

"Well, that depends how much you are aware of what has happened." Said Phoenix. "You see, a man named Luigi is being held for questioning, basically for keeping his meeting with you a secret."

"Oh, you mean that cute little green man with the mustache? Yeah, he came to my shop the night of the incident." Syrup informed, playing with her earring. "He came here asking me for a certain antique. And a special antique at that!"

"A special antique?" Phoenix wondered aloud.

And right before their eyes, Captain Syrup showed them a golden statue of a Toad. Phoenix and Toadsworth were awestruck of the shinny sparkly figurine. "Wow! That looks amazing...!"

"Yes, so beautiful and well made!" Said Toadsworth.

"Glad to hear you like it! Because I am willing to part with it for a measly amount of four-hundred coins." Said Captain Syrup.

Hearing that made both Phoenix and Toadsworth flinch with shock. "Uh... Wow! That's a uh... nice offer, but uh..." Phoenix spoke.

"We still have some investigating to do. I hope you understand." Toadsworth finished for Phoenix.

"Hmm... That's alright. I'm waiting for someone willing to bid on it, anyway." Said Captain Syrup as she put the statue away in her satchel. "But, if you want a quick look, I won't mind at all."

Phoenix decided to take a quick look around when he spotted what appeared to be a badge in the form of a water bottle. "Hey, is this some sort of badge?"

"Why, yes it is. It's actually a very rare badge that I got from Rougeport. It may look ordinary, but in truth, it's actually a magical badge that keeps you cool in even the most hottest volcanoes!" Said Captain Syrup.

"Seriously?! That's incredible!" Said an astound Phoenix. "And I'm guessing it costs a large amount of money?"

"Oh, yes it does. I would say, over about five-thousand coins!"

Phoenix and Toadsworth's jaws dropped in disbelief. "F-F-F-Five-thousand coins! But that is just... That is just outrageous! How did someone like you pay for it?"

Syrup then made a gleaming smirk and said "Oh, let's just say... it was a steal."

Phoenix made a nervous sweat as he thought to himself 'Uh... given that it's a figure of speech, but coming from a pirate...' Phoenix then decided to ask her some questions. "So, uh... Did you see my client, Bowser Koopa walking around the streets?"

"Why, yes I did." Answered Syrup. "That hot breath was walking around like a buffoon, eating that sack of brimstone snacks. He actually thought he wouldn't get caught, but he did!"

"You sound as if you are very aware of what he is being charged of." Said Phoenix, almost skeptically.

"Of course I know! Everyone here does! News spreads like germs, you know." Said Syrup with a serious face.

'Why did her imagination immediately point to germs, I don't know.' Phoenix thought annoyed.

"But it would seem the beloved princess thinks otherwise." Said Syrup with a wink.

Shocked and surprised, Toadsworth asked "Now hold on a moment! How would you know that the princess appointed Mr. Wright here to defend King Bowser in court?!"

"Oh, never you mind that! It's a lady's intuition." Said Syrup with a hand to her chest in a proper manner.

"Intuition... right..." Phoenix thought aloud as he decided to ask Syrup something else. "Uh, by the way, some other things happened before the incident, like the magic shop being temporarily closed for example."

"Aw, you mean that spooky little shop ran by that adorable little girl?" Said Syrup with a hand on her cheek as she smiled.

"Uh... yeah, that one. She was asked to help tend the garden. She seemed apathetic about it though, but she went and did it anyway."

"Well, apparently, she was a witness of the incident, though, she didn't see the guard get killed." Said Phoenix.

Syrup then held a fist to her cheek, looking sad as she said "Oh, yes. That poor brave, sturdy guard. He did his job so well. Such a shame that he clocked out permanently."

"That's... very kind of you to feel pity for Mr. McToad, madam." Said Toadsworth, before whispering to Phoenix "But I do find it odd that she would know so much about this case."

"Yeah, me too." Said Phoenix.

Syrup then made a mad pout as she said "Ahem, excuse me! It's impolite to whisper private conversations in front of a lady!"

Phoenix and Toadsworth flinched in surprise before they made sheepish grins. "Oh! Uh... Very sorry about that, Ms. Syrup!" He then noticed some carved wood pieces on the counter. "Uh... Were you carving some wooden figurine?"

"What makes you say that?" Said Syrup.

"Well, there's a pile of carved wood on the side of your counter. I was just wondering if you sell any of that stuff too." Phoenix wondered.

"Oh, not really. I just make a wooden collection of every humanoid being for myself. It's sort of a hobby." Said Syrup with a flirty smile.

"Uh... Okay, I guess that makes sense." Phoenix then said "By the way, Luigi testified in court that your shop was closed while he and his brother were apprehending Bowser. Was there a reason for that?" Just then, he saw three Psych Locks around her. 'And what do we have here? More people with secrets?'

"I have my reasons that only merchants would understand." Syrup claimed.

'That is if all merchants are honest.' Phoenix thought to himself. He then decided to drop the subject and say "Well, uh... I guess this is it for now. We'll be on our way. But, if we have more questions for you, we'll be sure to come back."

"Bye, boys. I'll be sure to save a special souvenir for each of you." Said Syrup as she blew a kiss to them before they left for Peach's castle.

August 22, 10:15 Toadstool Castle Front Door

"I wonder how the princess is doing, especially with what has happened today." Toadsworth thought aloud. "As a steward, I must ensure that Princess Peach is in good health and spirit."

Noticing Toadsworth's concerned expression, Phoenix said "You alright there, Toadsworth?"

"Just thinking aloud. The princess has been very unhappy ever since the incident." Said Toadsworth.

"Hey, don't worry. I'm sure she'll feel better as long as we find the culprit." Phoenix assured.

"That is, if the culprit is someone she is close to." Said Toadsworth.

"Oh, yeah... I did put suspicion on Luigi. Guess I blew it on that." Said Phoenix. 'I wonder if she's thinking of replacing me with a different lawyer right now...' Just then, a motorcycle came rolling by when it came to an immediate stop. Phoenix and Toadsworth nearly had a heart attack from the sudden event.

"Good golly! What in the world?!" Said Toadsworth.

Riding the motorcycle was a rather overweight, yet muscular man with a black zigzag mustache, big pink nose, yellow helmet with a W and goggles on it, dark blue shirt, beaten denim vest, yellow fingerless gloves also with a W on them, purple pants and blue pointy shoes. The man shook a fist angrily in the air as he yelled "Hey! Why don't you look alive, will ya! I could've wrecked!"

"Wh-What do you mean us?!" Phoenix asked peeved. "If anybody should watch where they're going, it's you, buster!"

Wario adjusted his gloves as he said with an intimidating glare "What was that?! You say you wanna have a mouth full of fists?! Because I'd be more than happy to give 'em to you!"

Toadsworth then stepped in and said "Now, now, master Wario! There is no need for violence here!"

"Huh? Wait, this guy is Wario?!" Phoenix asked surprised.

"Yeah, that's my name! What's it to ya?" Wario asked.

"Master Wario, this is Phoenix Wright. He's the attorney taking Bowser's case." Toadsworth explained.

"Oh, this guy is defending old hot breath?" Said Wario as he let out a laugh. "Then I guess there is no need for me to pummel this guy! I'll let Bowser do it for me if he is found guilty!"

'Ugh...! I'm not liking this guy already! He's fat, rude, short-tempered, and he smells like he hasn't bathed in weeks!'

Toadsworth then turned to Phoenix Wright and said "Mr. Wright, this is Wario, he is one of the many people that attended to the festival."

"I was doing more than that, old Toad!" Wario claimed. "I was also doing business there! Letting people ride a motorcycle in a steel ball for a minute! And it pays good money too."

'I'll bet that motorcycle was rigged to run out on gas in less than a minute...' Phoenix then said "So that means that you also saw Bowser getting arrested, right?"

"Yup, saw it all with my own eyes!" Wario claimed. "Bowser was walking the streets with a bag full of snacks when those two losers with their stupid looking mustaches came and took him away to the castle here."

"Uh huh." Phoenix nodded his head as he listened some more. "Did you notice anything else unusual?"

"What's so unusual about Bowser getting arrested?!" Wario asked as he laughed. "Anyway, I think I did see old green 'what's-his-name' over at the pawn shop, and he looked very shady."

"Old green what's-his-name?" Phoenix asked confused.

"I think he's referring to master Luigi." Toadsworth explained. "He's not as popular as his older brother, just to let you know."

"Oh. Wait, isn't that kind of harsh for a younger brother?" Asked Phoenix seriously.

"What do you care about a second rate hero? Besides, he's a big wimp!" Said Wario as he snickered.

Though annoyed, Phoenix decided to return to the matter of the case. "Can you please just tell us what 'shady' things he was doing?"

"Didn't know what they were talking about, but he did look real nervous, almost as if someone was stalking him." Said Wario as he picked his nose with his pinky.

"But, why? What was master Luigi so nervous about?" Toadsworth asked.

"How should I know? All I could tell was that it looked mighty suspicious. He didn't even leave with anything." Wario testified.

"You mean he left without buying anything? That is sort of odd." Said Phoenix. "But what was also odd was that Ashley mentioned something about a man in a cloak that had a mustache. The mysterious man asked her to tend to the courtyard garden."

Hearing that made Wario look nervous. "Wha? Oh, uh..." Just then, two Psyche Locks appeared around Wario. "Oh, yeah! I saw that guy too! He was just as suspicious! Yeah!"

'Not as suspicious as these locks before me, which you can't see.' Phoenix thought to himself. 'I guess I should ask Ashley if she can describe more about this clocked figure when I see her. Though I doubt that she'll be happy to see me...'

Wario then hopped on his hog as he said "If you got nothing else to ask me, then I better get on the road."

"Now hold on a moment, good sir! What if we aren't done interrogating you?" Toadsworth asked.

"Isn't that a fine way to convince me to stay!" Said an offended Wario. "Besides, it's not like I'm going anywhere far. The police are holding us here as suspects. Later, suckers! Ah, hah, hah, hah, hah!" Wario then darted off, leaving smoke and a dust cloud behind.

Phoenix and Toadsworth covered their mouths and coughed out the nasty particles. "Sheesh, humble guy, isn't he?" Phoenix said sarcastically.

"Don't mind him. As despicable as he can be, there are actually worse people than him." Said Toadsworth.

Phoenix let out a sigh and said "Yeah, I guess your right." Phoenix then noticed something on the ground. "Huh? What's this?" He picked up what appeared to be a letter. "It looks like a letter. Wario must have dropped it while he was rolling away."

"It would appear so, Mr. Wright. I suppose it's best if we read what it says." Said Toadsworth.

"Your right. We might as well." Said Phoenix as he opens the letter and reads aloud "Dear Wario: I'm sending you this letter to make a deal. I know in the past, you and I haven't been on good terms, but this time's different. I'm willing to offer you a fair share of booty from the Toadstool Castle. Meet me at my pawn shop tent to discuss the plan. See you then, handsome. P.S. scratch out my name after reading this letter." After reading it, Phoenix had a hint of realization. "This letter seems mighty suspicious beyond reason, if it has anything to do with Princess Peach."

"Yes, almost as if Wario was up to no good, as always." Said Toadsworth. "If only we know who send that letter to him, given it's been scratched out."

"I wonder if..." Phoenix thought before he folded the letter and put it in his inventory of evidence. "Well, we'll worry about that later. Right now, we should focus on asking the princess some questions." They then walked inside the castle, heading right to where they believe Princess Peach might be.

August 22, 10:16 Toadstool Castle Sitting Room

Once they walked inside, they noticed Peach pacing back and forth, looking very concerned about something. Wondering what Peach was all worked up about, Phoenix asked "Um, Princess?"

Peach held a hand to her mouth in surprise with a gasp. "Oh! Mr. Wright, Toadsworth!"

"Good day, dear princess." Toadsworth greeted with a bow. "Mr. Wright and I have come to check on how you are doing."

Peach looked down with a sad expression as she said "Well, I... I saw how the trail went today. Even with... um..."

Phoenix looked down in shame. "Yeah. What I did with Mario's brother, Luigi."

"Poor Luigi. He must be so scared right now. I can't bear to imagine how he's taking this." Said Peach in concern.

"I'm sure Luigi will be fine. He's face more terrifying situations than this. What I'm worried about right now is master Mario." Said Toadsworth. "The old boy has a good heart, but he can be reckless some times. He could end up in a much tighter spot than his brother."

"Yes, your right." Said Peach.

Phoenix then said to Peach "Look, your grace? If you wish to replace me with a more reliable lawyer, I'll understand."

Peach flinched at the words coming from Phoenix. "M-Mr. Wright?"

"The Mario Brothers aren't just some heroes, they are your faithful servants, your friends. And it's my fault that Luigi is being held accountable on suspicion. Plus, I'm taking this case and trying to find Bowser innocent so that he wouldn't feed me to his pet."

Peach then looked serious as she said "I'm not going to replace you!"

"Huh? Y-You're not?" Asked a surprised Phoenix.

"I understand that you feel bad for what happened today, but there is no one else I know who would be willing to defend Bowser!" Peach reminded. "Other than that, you are not like most lawyers who do their job only for fame and fortune. You are Phoenix Wright, attorney at law who's only concern is seeking out the truth and assuring justice to be served!"

"P-Princess."

"Which is why you are the only one I can rely on. To see if Bowser is innocent of the charges."

When Peach finished, Phoenix looked at her with sympathy. 'She... really trusts me with this, despite what I just did. Sheesh... I guess I should consider myself lucky. What am I thinking here?! I'm gonna be chowder!'

"Anyhow, I have other problems at hand." Said Peach.

"What ever do you mean, princess?" Asked a concerned Toadsworth.

"When I returned to the castle, I've just received a very ominous letter from the mail slot." Said Peach as she showed the said letter to Phoenix.

Phoenix examined the letter with glued pieces of magazine paper. "Yikes, looking at letters like this sends chills up my spine...!" He then read the letter which said "Princess Peach of the Mushroom Kingdom, I have the Grand Star which you and your people treasure so much, and I tend to keep it! If you ever want it back, you will agree to deliver... ONE-MILLION COINS?! Yowza! That is a lot of money!"

"Yes, it is. It's just so dreadful. Now I know for a fact that Bowser is completely innocent..." Said Peach with a fist to her chin.

"You're right, Princess Peach." Toadsworth agreed. "The Bowser we know wouldn't want mere coins, he would want the entire Mushroom Kingdom!"

'So, if Bowser isn't really the one who stole the Grand Star and killed McToad, then what sort of secret is he keeping? Also, could Wario have played a part in the incident? This case keeps getting deeper and deeper.' Phoenix thought to himself before he asked "By the way, did they check on the Chain-Chomps teeth? Uh... Y-Y'know, to find which one of them attacked McToad?"

"We did, but..." Peach said, looking worried.

"Saying but before stopping... Not always a good sign." Phoenix thought aloud.

"It appears that non of the Chain-Chomps had McToad's blood on any of their teeth." Peach explained.

"Wh-WHAAAAAAATTTT?!" Phoenix shouted in surprise. "No blood... in any of their mouths?!"

Peach nodded her head. "Yes. This could only mean that no Chain-Chomps were released in the courtyard."

"My, my. This is a very baffling revelation we have here." Said Toadsworth. "This is with out a doubt information that is very devastating to your case."

"Never tell me the odds..." Said Phoenix. "Do you at least have some good news?"

"Yes, but only one. We managed to find the replica airship at the outskirts of town at the west." Peach informed. "Our volunteered maintenance expert is over there right now, examining for damage."

"Well, at least that's good to know. Do you think we can check it out for ourselves?" Asked Phoenix. "We might find something that'll help with the investigation."

Peach gave it some thought. "Hmm... Normally, I would allow you to, however, as princess, I must enforce the law as well as abide by it. So, I'll have to discus with the detective for a permission."

'I'd say the good detective would accept the request, weather it's from royalty, politicians, or anyone of authority.' Phoenix thought to himself. "Well, thanks. There is someone we need to talk to anyway."

"Alright. Take care, Mr. Wright. You too, Toadsworth."

"I wish you the best of health, princess. Shall we be off?" Said Toadsworth.

"Yeah, let's go." Said Phoenix as they left the castle into the carnival streets.

August 22, 10:18 Ashley's Magical Tent

Phoenix stood there stiff as he thought to himself 'Heart rate rising? Sweat above brow? Yeah, I'm getting bad vibes coming back here.'

"Are you alright, Mr. Wright?" Asked Toadsworth confused. "You don't look so well."

"I wish I can tell you that I'm fine, but the problem is... I'm not." Phoenix answered. "When Ashley sees me, she is gonna cast a hex on me, I can feel it in my back bone."

Just then, they heard Ashley's voice saying "Welcome to my shop, how may I..." They turned to see Ashley, and needless to say, she was very unhappy to see Phoenix again. "Oh, it's you...! Here to laugh for making a fool out of me?"

"Uh... No, not really." Phoenix assured. 'And by the way, it wasn't my fault that your testimony wasn't one-hundred percent accurate.'

Ashley then pounded the tip of her wand in her hand as she glared intimidatingly at Phoenix, saying "Then why are you even here, wasting my time?"

"W-We are just here to ask you about last night."

Ashley pouted as she said "I've already told you what I witnessed in court today, why are you pestering me even more?!"

"It's not about the garden this time, it's about the uh... mystery customer you had." Phoenix answered.

"Oh, is that what you're here for? Well, I have nothing to say to you, buster." Ashley declared.

"Come on, you can't have that much of a grudge on me, do you?"

"I was mentally humiliated in that court room! And it was all because of you! I see no possible reason why I shouldn't be mad at you!" Ashley said firmly.

Phoenix then turned to Toadsworth and said "Uh... Toadsworth? A little help here?"

Toadsworth shook his head and said "As much as I like to help, I'm afraid it's your issue, not mine, Mr. Wright."

"But... You're the one who supported me in finding contradictions in her testimonies! So you are just as involved!"

Toadsworth rubbed his chin in thought. "Hmm... You make a valid point Wright. The best I can come up with is say that you'll make it up to her. Convince her that you'll pay her back."

"You can't be serious." Phoenix let out a sigh. "Fine..." he then turned back to Ashley and said with a nervous smile "Uh... Ashley? If it means anything, I just want to say sorry that I humiliated you in public."

"You'd better be, you porcupine!" Ashley sassed.

'Just keep your cool, Wright.' "I've been thinking, maybe I should make it up to you. You know, call it even?"

Ashley pouted with her arms crossed as she said "You can go at get eaten by a man eating plant!"

"Uh... I'm already being threatened of that, actually. What I have in mind is finding the culprit."

"And why would I want to help you with that?" Ashley asked stubbornly.

"Because, this culprit could actually have been someone you know. Somebody you dislike very much." Hearing that caught Ashley's interest. "Like that mystery customer of yours. He could have tricked you into helping him commit the crime, there for making you an accomplice. If you can tell me what exactly he said, you might get back at him."

Ashley closed her eyes as she started thinking "Hmm... That does sound very convincing, and tempting... Very well, I'll tell you everything I know."

'Phew, that was actually a lot easier than I thought. I have to give Toadsworth credit for the advice.' "So, when did this guy arrive at your tent?"

"He arrived at around 8:00. And it's a good thing too. Because at that time, that blasted motorcycle was making it so hard for me to hear my customers in a loud indoor voice."

"Motorcycle? Wait, you mean the one attraction that Wario was running?" Asked Phoenix.

"Yeah, him. That gluttonous warthog just had to have his little scamming activity of his over about five feet away. And the carnival starts at 7:30 P.M. It was very annoying! I'm just glad that one guard came along and put a stop to it."

"Guard? Is she talking about McToad?" Phoenix asked Toadsworth.

"It's quit possible, Mr. Wright. This is a rather interesting piece of information." Said Toadsworth. "What did the guard say to Warios?"

"How should I know. My tent was facing away from Wario's attraction. The guard was there at 7:50, then after the guard left, Wario closed his attraction for a while and went straight to the pawn shop across the way."

"Were you able to get a view of what he was doing there?" Phoenix asked.

"Not really. That tent was also facing away from Wario's attraction. Maybe he was buying something there? I didn't care much to pay attention. Then, at around 7:52, my mysterious customer came and asked for my gardening assistance, which I took as an opportunity to do my experiments. He also asked for that very special potion."

"Would you care to tell us what that potion is, young lady?" Toadsworth asked.

"I guess. The potion invented by the Acme Crop. that can turn gold into wood and it works in revers." Ashley said as she presents a bright yellow potion in a fat round bottle to them. "Here it is, right here."

"Wow, a potion that turns wood into gold. That sounds too good to be true." Said Phoenix.

"It is too good to be true. It's basically a magical tool for con artists. Just one drop will change a whole wooden or golden object completely. Other people often use it to hide their treasure. If it gets wet, however, the stuff will wear off in."

Toadsworth looked very displeased as he said "Hmph! If this potion was made for pranks, I would be alright with it. But for conning people's money, that is just despicable!"

"Yeah, even I would hate to buy something at a high price only to find out that it's fake." Said Phoenix. "Do you have any clue as to who it might have been that bought the potion?"

"I may have a hunch, but it's kind of vague. I do have an enchanted invoice template that records for me all of the customers that came to my store. You can have it if you want. Not sure how much good it'll do you though."

"Uh... We'll take a look at it, thanks. Phoenix looked at the invoice, looked up the list saying "Huh, you seem to be doing pretty good with your business." Phoenix then noticed a very oddly spelled name. "Hang on a minute. One of them looks like it's supposed to say Mario, but the M is upside down."

"Which would make it a W, which makes it say..." Toadsworth then gasped as he said "Wario...! He's must be the mysterious customer."

"Your right! There's no mistaking it."

"But why would Wario want to buy a potion while hiding his face?" Toadsworth pondered.

"That's a good question. I think we should ask him ourselves." Said Phoenix as he put the invoice in his inventory of evidence. "But before we go, I have one more question." Phoenix turned back to Ashley. "Did you ever manage to see Bowser wandering around the streets before the incident?"

"Actually, I did saw him over at the pawn shop seven minutes after the man left with the potion. I didn't know what happened, but I think he burst out flames and yelled angrily... Ahem, 'WHAT?! How dare they mock my mightiest glory! Well, if that's how they're gonna be, then I'll just go and sabotage their little prop!'"

'That wasn't exactly the best impression of him, but coming from a little girl like her is almost adorable to hear.' Phoenix thought with a smile.

Noticing Phoenix's grin, Ashley stared daggers at him and asked "What are you smiling about?"

Phoenix flinched as he said "Uh... Nothing, nothing really."

"Hmph! Anyway, he then went stomping away towards the parking lot, and then I heard a motorcycle roll away with two people on it." Ashley further explained.

"A motorcycle? Do you think the one operating it was Wario?" Phoenix asked.

"Most likely, yes. Though the noise was behind me, so I could only see two silhouette figures on that accursed vehicle!"

"I see. Well, thank you for your time. We really appreciate it." Said Phoenix.

Ashley crossed her arms as she said "Whatever."

Toadsworth rubbed his chin as he said "Bowser was saying something about doing sabotaging a prop. I think he was referring to something that was about to be used in the canceled play."

"If you mean the replica of his airship, I think so too. If only we had the permission to head over there."

They then heard someone yell out "Mail call!" They looked up and saw a mail carrying Paratroopa who descended down next to them. "Phoenix Wright?"

"Um... Yeah, that's me." Phoenix confirmed with a raised eye brow.

The Paratroopa reached in his bag and pulled out a letter, handing it to Phoenix. "A letter to you from the princess."

"The princess?" Phoenix accepted the letter and said "Thanks." Once the Paratroopa flew off, Phoenix opened the envelope and read the letter.

"What does the letter say, Mr. Wright?" Toadsworth asked curiously.

"Huh, what do you know. She writes that she send a request to Detective Gumshoe to allow access at the sight."

"Golly good! Then let us be over there as soon as possible." Said Toadsworth as they went to where the fake vessel was found.

August 22, 10:22 Airship Replica Sighting

"Here it is, the lost replica of Bowser's Airship." Said Toadsworth.

"You're sounding like it's an ancient artifact." Said Phoenix with a weird look.

Toadsworth made a fake cough and said "Ah, yes. Excuse me. It would appear as though the police are investigating it right now. They have close yellow tape all around the ship."

"Yeah, but I wonder where Gumshoe and that mechanic is?" They then heard an exploding noise from inside the ship, which caught Phoenix and Toadsworth by surprise.

"Great Goombas! What was that?" Toadsworth asked.

"It sounded like it came from the ship!" Phoenix exclaimed.

From out of the ship came an ape with brown fur, a red polka dot bandanna, sunglasses, white tank top, and denim pants ripped to the knees. He was all burnt gray and was coughing out smoke. "Aw man! If that wasn't the most bogus fireworks show ever! Looks like I'll have to find a replacement." Said the ape, scratching his head.

"Who is this guy?" Phoenix wondered aloud.

"That happens to be our volunteering mechanic, Funky Kong." Toadsworth introduced.

"The mechanic... is an ape?" Phoenix said with a raised eyebrow.

Funky Kong shook the burn off of himself as he asked "Did someone mention my I.D.? That's right! I am the one and only Master of Mechanics, the undisputed King of Funk, Funky Kong! Ow, yeah!" Funky then made a funky dance pose, making Phoenix and Toasworth feel awkward.

'Okay, I've met with odd people before, but this ape is uniquely odd.' "Uh... Nice to meet you. I'm Phoenix Wright. I'm the lawyer taking this case. By the way, what were you working on just now?"

"Wow, dude! Fiery Phoenix! It is a pleasure. You think sometime after the trail, you can have a leisure?"

"Uh... Why?" Phoenix wondered, a bit confused.

"I'm just saying it's an honor to meet such a popular attorney!" Funky Kong mentioned. "Solving mysteries is all the rage these days, ya know what I'm sayin?"

"You're too kind. Though, I'm just doing my job, as anyone would say." Said Phoenix in modesty before changing the subject. "What were you working on, by the way?"

Funky Kong frowned as he said "Aw, man, it's a total bummer! I was just checking on the engine to see if it can move again, only to have it blast in my face like a typhoon! It's all busted up now. To think, I've worked so hard on it."

"Yeah, that's too bad." Said Phoenix.

"Quite a shame." Said Toadsworth. "What could've caused it to do that?"

"Don't really know. When I turned it on, it wasn't running very well, and it sounded like something was jammed in it. And before I knew it, Ya'll know what happened next."

"Uh-huh. What exactly is the engine for?" Phoenix asked.

"It's for making those propellers spin around, my man. Everyone knows nothing starts going without an engine full of fuel, which is Star Power. Unfortunately, it can go so far, what with only one Star Power in total. That would only make it last for five minutes, or so."

"Really."

"Yup, good thing is, the ship would've stayed in the air only for no less than three minutes before having to descend back to the earth again."

"Indeed. We thought it best to save energy that way." Said Toadsworth. "To think it was stolen the night of the incident. It would've been a spectacular scene if that hadn't happen."

"Yeah, that is a shame." Said Phoenix. "What do you think caused it to explode?"

Funky Kong shrugged and said "Not really sure yet. It was all black with smoke. I figured I had to get to cleaner air, for my health's sake."

"By the way, when did the ship get stolen?" Phoenix asked.

Funky Kong scratched his head with a raised eye brow and said "Can't say for sure when. I left the prop all tied down with rope and wooden steaks behind the castle wall courtyard. I then left to browse around the carnival at 8:00. Though I've noticed that some of the attractions were closed at the time. When I came at 8:11, it was gone!"

"So, you're saying someone must have cut the rope in order to take the ship away."

"How else would anyone have taken it?" Asked Funky Kong rhetorically. "Most of the rope was still around there, so they must have cut them after climbing aboard."

"Hmm... Very interesting." Said Toadsworth.

Just then, they heard a familiar voice boom out "Hey! What's going on over here?!" They turned and saw Gumshoe with the rest of the police.

"It's Gumshoe!" Phoenix exclaimed.

Gumshoe saw Phoenix and said sternly "Hey, pal! What do you think you're doing?! Were you trying to destroy some evidence! I never thought you would stick to such a low!"

Phoenix flinched at the accusation and protested "Wh-What?! I was doing no such thing! I wasn't even five feet near the ship!"

"It's true. I was checking up on the engine when it went all up in smoke." Said Funky. "I was about to go and examine the engine again once the smoke clears up."

"Oh, well why didn't you say so?!" Said Gumshoe. "You at least could've waited for our supervision, pal! Honestly!"

"And where were you guys while he was examining the ship?" Phoenix asked.

Gumshoe made a stupid look as he said "Uh... who, us? We were... uh... That's private police business! Nothing to stick your nose in, pal!"

'I'm just gonna assume that they went off sight seeing.'

"Anyhow, when that smoke goes away, we'll have a look at the engine and see if we can find the cause." Said Gumshoe.

"Well, looks like we're in luck, officers!" Said Funky Kong. "Most of the black clouds have ascended to the sky and faded. So let's get to investigating!"

"Hey, I'm the detective in charge here! I'll say when we can investigate." Said Gumshoe as they all waited for his short delayed command. "Let's get to investigating!" He then looked at Phoenix sternly and said "As for you, Wright! You better not move from that spot until we are done here, ya got it?"

Phoenix only shrugged as he said "Okay, it's not like we have anywhere else to go at anytime soon."

Gumshoe then turned to Funky Kong and said "You there, hairy monkey. You're gonna come and help us out."

Funky Kong crossed his arms with an offended look as he said calmly "I'm an ape, yo. Not a monkey."

As they went inside, Toadsworth said to Phoenix "I think it's smart if we examine the surrounding area, while they investigate the inside."

"Hmm... That's not a bad idea. Let's see if we can find something." Phoenix and Toadsworth began looking around for clues when Phoenix spotted some dirty tire tracks. "Hey, Toadsworth! Come look at this!"

Toadsworth ran to where Phoenix was as he asked "What is it, Mr. Wright?"

Phoenix pointed at the tracks and said "Look here. We've got some tire tracks. They seem to begin by the ship and they are heading east from here."

"Hmm... Indeed. Whoever was here must have made been riding a motorcycle." Said Toadsworth, rubbing his chin. "That could only lead to one conclusion."

"Yeah, I'm starting to think the same thing." Said Phoenix. They continued to examine the area when they noticed some rope tied to the rail that was cut short. "That must be the what was left of the rope that was holding the ship down."

"And just like Funky Kong said, it was cut from up there." Said Toadsworth. "But, one of them seems much longer than the others. I wonder why that is?"

"That is rather strange. I wonder if they made a slight mistake?" Phoenix then saw some golden brown liquid on the rear side of the ship. "What the heck is that stuff?"

"It appears to be some sap, my dear boy." Said Toadsworth.

"Sap? Isn't that the sticky liquid that supposed to come out of plants or something?" Phoenix asked. "I wounder why some of it is on that ship."

"You're guess is just as good as mine, Mr. Wright. Where, in fact, did this sap come from? And how did it get on the ship like that?"

'The mystery just keeps getting deeper and deeper. Just what could've gone on the night the Grand Star was stolen, along with the murder of McToad?'

Gumshoe and Funky Kong came back out as the detective announced "Alright, I think we're done for now."

"And you would not believe what we just found!" Said Funky Kong as he showed Phoenix and Toadsworth a horn shaped object. "We found this stuck between the gears! Someone must jammed it in there! That is so lame, my friends! L-A-M-E!"

"I suppose that would explain why the engine exploded like that." Said Toadsworth. "But who would do such a thing, do you think?"

"I think I might have a hunch of who it was." Said Phoenix.

"That's not all we found, pal. We've managed to find a dirty costume that resembles the defendant. And man does it reek with garlic!" Said Gumshoe, holding up the costume that is dirty and resembles Bowser's body, like he said.

Toadsworth took a sniff and immediately plugged his nose in disgust. "Goodness! What a foul scent!"

Phoenix too plugged his nose as he stated "I think... I think I might lose my breakfast..." Phoenix then noticed a gaping hole in the stomach area. "Hey, there's a hole in the stomach."

"Your right, Mr. Wright." Toadsworth acknowledged. "Someone must have ripped on in it. You don't suppose..."

"Suppose that... Someone was actually too fat for this costume and there for ripped a hole in it by accident?" Said a confused Gumshoe.

"Uh... No, that's not what I was about to say." Said a dumbfounded Toadsworth. "From my perspective, someone slashed the costume with a rather sharp object. I can only say that poor young McToad was the one who damaged the costume."

"Oh, uh... Yeah, that's was my original assumption from the start!" Said Gumshoe with a nervous chuckle.

'Uh-huh. Sure it was.' Phoenix thought sarcastically, when he noticed something else odd. "Hang on a minute. This is just the body of the costume. Where the heck is that head?"

"That's a good question, pal!" Said Gumshoe with a straight face before bowing his head in shame. "We don't know."

"You don't know?!" Phoenix repeated in disbelief.

"We've searched for the mask that goes with the costume, but we were fruitless." Gumshoe explained.

"And no fruit means no happy fruit fly." Said Funky Kong.

"Toadsworth, you think we should, you know, pay a certain someone a little visit?" Phoenix asked.

"I'm suspecting the same exact thing, Mr. Wright. I believe it is about time he came clean for his sake." Said Toadsworth as they left the scene and right to the detention center.

August 22, 10:33 Detention Center

Phoenix and Toadsworth sit in the visiting room, waiting for Bowser to come to talk to them. "Do you really think he'll talk to us?"

"He might as well have to if he wants to be found innocent of this case. Besides, if I am to trust my client, I'm going to have to get him to spill the beans."

"Well, I hope you'll get the answers out of him and not agitate him so much." Said Toadswroth in regards.

"Yeah, I hope so, too." They then felt trembling foot steps as they saw Bowser come in and sit down. "And here he is now."

"There better be a good reason why you wanted to see me, lawyer! Otherwise, I'll stomp on ya like a cockroach!" Bowser threatened.

"Er... Don't worry. We have plenty to talk about. Just a few questions, and some good news." Said Phoenix with a nervous smile.

Bowser chuckled as he said "Really now? Well then let's hear it! What do you have for me?"

"First off all, we found the replica ship that was stolen, and inside was a costume that resembles you. Meaning that it's possible that someone was disguised as you in order to frame you." Said Phoenix. Hearing that made Bowser cringe with anger, making Phoenix confused. "Er... Is something wrong, your gnarliness?

Bowser wiped the angry look off his face and said in dismiss "Huh? Oh, uh... No, nothings wrong! Anyway, nice job, lawyer! I might reconsider feeding you to one of my pets."

'That's real assuring...' Phoenix thought sarcastically. "We've also payed a visit to the princess, like we said."

"Did you give her my regards, I hope?" Bowser asked with a goofy smile.

"Uh... Yeah, sure we did. She said thank you." Phoenix lied.

"Oh, good. I wasn't sure whether or not to trust you, but it looks like you've managed to keep your word." Said Bowser.

"Uh... As I was saying, when we came to meet her, she just received a ransom note concerning the Grand Star. Someone who send it to her wanted to negotiate with her, demanding a large amount of money. And from what I know, you would want more than money, which means this piece of evidence is very crucial to the case."

Bowser chuckled again and said "Excellent! Very excellent! But, hang on. Who would write such an awful thing to my little Peachy?! That's just down right despicable!"

'His little Peachy...? I think I may vomit at the thought of him and the princess being together...' Phoenix thought to himself before explaining aloud "Well, that's the problem. Even with evidence like this, we still need to find out who it was that pinned all of this on you."

"Well, you better find them!" Bowser said as he slams a fist down. "Because when they are caught, they are gonna regret ever crossing me! No one frames the mighty King Koopa and gets away with it! NO ONE!"

A nervous Phoenix scratched the back of his head and said "Uh... Don't worry, your gnarliness. I'll make sure that they pay for it. But right now, we need to discuss about some certain things."

Phoenix then used his magatama to bring forth the three locks he saw earlier, getting ready to ask his questions.

TAKE THAT!

-Arriving at the Carnival-

"Can you tell me in detail what you were doing at the festival when you arrived?" Phoenix asked.

An angry Bowser then snorted fire as he claimed "I already told you, porcupine head! I was in the carnival the whole time!"

"If that's the case, then how come your ship left the parking lot?"

"I don't know! Someone obviously stole it, or something!"

"You're saying that someone stole it? If that's true, than it would contradict this piece of information..."

TAKE THAT!

"During the trail today, the Mario Brothers testified about the events in the parking lot, and they kept saying that your ship kept leaving and coming back. You're claiming that someone stole it, however, why would anyone steal it if they keep bringing it back where they found it?"

Bowser flinched with a surprisingly nervous. "Er... Well, I guess they were just borrowing it for something and they had to make many stops, so I guess that's what happened."

"Well, here is my guess of what happened." Said Phoenix. "I don't think your ship was stolen at all!"

"What did you just say?! Are you calling me a liar?!" Bowser said, agitated.

"You could say that." Said Phoenix.

"You've got a lot of nerve saying that with such a straight face, lawyer!" Said Bowser.

"As I was saying, I think that there is a reason your ship left and came back. And the answer couldn't be any clearer." Said Phoenix. "It was you! You took off on your ship and then returned to the exact spot you were at!" Bowser gulped as one of the locks shattered and faded.

Bowser then kept his cool as he crossed his arms and said "That's ridiculous! Why would I steal my own ship?! Besides, where would I be going that night? The carnival is the only interesting event in town."

"Actually, the carnival isn't the only interesting thing that was going on."

Bowser then started to sweat as he rubbed his neck. "Huh? What are you talking about?!"

"I'm saying there is a good reason why you would take off in your parking lot. Because you were planning something big."

Bowser then got aggravated and said "Are you saying I'm the culprit, the culprit or something?! Need I remind you of what happens if you step out of line?!"

"Technically, you said if I screw up. They are two completely different things." Phoenix pointed out. "Anyway, it's not the theft of the Grand Star I'm talking about. It's something that involves this..."

TAKE THAT!

Phoenix pulls out the brochure and turned it to the Play page, showing it to Bowser. "The play which takes place at Toadstool Castle." Bowser once again started to sweat nervously after seeing the picture. "This play is meant to be played at the night of the carnival. Unfortunately, it was canceled due to the incident."

"As if that has anything to do with me!"

"Actually, it has a lot to do with you. Because it's a play dedicated to Mario's heroic deeds and your past failures of villainy."

"Hmph! So what?"

"So, it's obvious that you hated this play and wanted to sabotage it."

Bowser then roared in anger "HOW DARE YOU SAY SUCH A THING! I don't even know what you are talking about!"

"Then allow me to enlighten you. Today, we found a replica of your ship just west of the outskirts, and when we got there, there was an explosion which came from the inside, and it was caused by..."

TAKE THAT!

"The engine located at the inside of the ship. It blew up because it had a piece of horn stuck in it's rotating gears." Bowser cringed nervously as another lock broke into pieces. 'I've almost got him, there is just on lock left.'

"You don't seriously believe that it was me that did it! I mean, how could I have known about the play?! It was canceled, and I didn't have a brochure." Bowser claimed.

"On the contrary, there is a way you could've known about the play. And I think I know how..."

TAKE THAT!

Phoenix pulled out a mug shot of Captain Syrup and said "Do you recognize this woman?" Bowser flinched from looking at the mug shot. "She is the owner of the pawn shop during the festival. You went up to browse the antiques, when she mentioned something to you. And that something is the play that mocks your image. You couldn't take it, so you wanted to get back at them."

Bowser then began stomping his feet in anger as he said "Do you have any idea what you're stepping in here?! If you dare bring that up, I swear it'll be dinner time after the trail!"

"I don't really care!" Said Phoenix firmly.

Bowser was greatly surprised. "Wait, w-what?"

"I said I don't care." Phoenix repeated.

"I know what you said! I ain't deaf!" Bowser yelled. "Why did you even say that?!"

"While I am very terrified of your threats, what matters to me is finding the truth and letting it be known for the good of justice. Besides, would you rather go to prison for murder-theft, or would you rather go to jail for vandalism?"

Bowser closed his eyes in thought before he said "I hate to admit it, but you have a point, lawyer." The last lock then broke and the chains disappear.

Unlock Successful

"Alright, it's true. I did leave the parking lot on my ship to look for the replica and sabotage it. When I that they were using a costume of me, I was steaming mad! It was a great and utter mockery of my honorable mightiness!"

'What is so honorable about invading kingdoms and kidnapping princesses?'

"That lady told me all about it, even where they were keeping it. So I went on over there as soon as possible." Said Bowser.

"She did? Then why did you come back to the parking lot twice?" Phoenix asked.

"Whoever said I did? I only left the parking lot once! I've been looking everywhere for that blasted cheap replica that failed to capture mine's intimidating features, might I add."

"But, you couldn't find it?" Phoenix asked.

"You didn't even see the ship hovering over the courtyard?" Said Toadsworth.

"No, I didn't even go over there! I went right where the lady said it would be, at the south part of the outskirts." Bowser explained.

"But the replica was located north, behind the castle!" Toadsworth corrected.

After hearing that, Bowser shouted angrily "WHAT?!" Toadsworth flinched in terror. "Say that again! Don't you be lying to me!"

"G-Gracious! Master Bowser, I assure you, I am not lying! The replica was in fact behind the castle, waiting to make it's entrance." Toadsworth explained.

"Yeah, I think you were lied to in order to set you up for this crime."

Bowser snorted more fire out as he said "Unbelievable! How dare they make a fool out of me! ME! The undisputed Koopa King! Just you wait, when I get the 'not guilty' verdict, I'll make sure that they rot in my dungeon forever!"

"Uh... Sure, whatever you say, your gnarliness." Said Phoenix. "If you really want to get them, maybe you can tell us something odd that you saw that night."

Bowser thought about it before answering "Well, when I finally found that ridiculous prop, I got aboard the prop and found a what looked like a horn and jammed it in the engine. Oh, man did it feel good!" Phoenix and Toadsworth gave Bowser a weird look. " Anyway, as I was leaving, I did see and hear a motorcycle speeding off right into town. I didn't bother to wonder what the fuss was, so I kept on flying back to the parking lot."

"Okay, well thank you for your cooperation. Hopefully it'll help us win the case for you. And for the princess." Said Phoenix.

"Whatever. As long as I can get out of this dump!" Said Bowser.

They were about to leave, when Toadsworth stopped and said "Oh, before we forget. How is Master Luigi doing? I hope he is holding it together."

"Oh, the green wonder? Yeah, they just got done questioning him so he went and left." Bowser answered.

"I see. Thank you. We'll be on our way." Said Toadsworth as he turns to Phoenix. "Well, Mr. Wright. It appears it wasn't a complete lose. At least the suspicion on Master Luigi has been lifted."

"Yeah, and soon it will lay heavy on two certain people I know. If I find the right amount of evidence." Said Phoenix Wright.

"Right you are, Mr. Wright!" Said Toadsworth with confidence. "But, where do we go from here is the question."

Phoenix gave it some thought of what they could do. "I suppose the best course of action is to meet up with Wario."

"Are you sure that's what you want to do?" Toadsworth questioned.

"If we are to find the true culprit, we might as well question everyone. And as much as I hate the idea, I think we should start by asking Wario first."

"Well, if that is what you wish, then so be it." Said Toadsworth almost in defeat as they left the detention center and went to the carnival.

August 22, 10:36 Mushroom Kingdom Star Carnival

Phoenix and Toadsworth arrived at the town streets, as quiet as they've left it. "Wario could be anywhere around here. You think we ought to check out that attraction he has?" Phoenix wondered.

"We could, but there is no telling if he would be there. Master Wario tends to be twitchy, despite his eating habits." Said Toadsworth, when they heard a motorcycle come roaring by. They saw Wario coming their way. "Ah, there he is now. I suppose that saved us the trouble."

Phoenix then stood in Wario's way as he raised a hand up and said "Excuse me, Mr. Wario?"

Watching Phoenix doing a crazy attempt to get Wario's attention, Toadswroth asked with a nervous look "A-Are you sure that is the best way to get Wario to stop?"

'I'll admit, I wish could've come up with a much brighter and much safer idea than this. But, it's the best I can think of.' Phoenix thought to himself. 'I just hope he stops immediately...' As they waited, they could see Wario getting closer, with no signs of slowing down.

"He's not stopping, Mr. Wright!" Toadsworth exclaimed.

"I'm sure he will." Phoenix assured. The closer Wario got, the more nervous Phoenix became. 'He'll stop. He's got to, right?' When Wario spotted Phoenix, he sped around Phoenix and stopping while behind the stiffened attorney. 'Okay, note to self, never do that again...'

"Mr. Wright! Are you alright?" Toadsworth asked in concern.

"Y-Yeah. And good news. I don't have to go to a restroom no more." Said Phoenix in a supposed figure of speech.

An angry Wario got off of his motorcycle as he said "Hey, what are ya crazy?! Didn't your mama ever tell you to not get in the way of a road hogger?! You could make him wreck!"

'Not unless you stop mid way like a normal thinking person.' Phoenix thought to himself all peeved at Wario's remark.

"What do you want, anyway?" Wario asked.

"I uh... I believe we..." Phoenix tried to talk, still all shaken up. "I believe we said that... w-we uh..."

Wario got impatient and said "Well, are ya gonna say something, or what?!"

Toadsworth then stepped up and said "We were just looking for you, because we said we would have more questions for you. Isn't that right?"

"Uh, yeah. That's... That's right! We came across some interesting things while investigating the replica of Boswer's ship." Said Phoenix, making Wario sweat nervously. "You seem nervous, Mr. Wario. What seems to be the problem?"

Wario made an angry look as he said "Yeah, I'm fine, thanks! It's just the heat that's getting to me!"

"If by heat, I think you mean the local authorities." Phoenix commented.

"What are you talking about?!"

"I'm talking about the incident. I think you are involved in it as much as Bowser was!"

"Are you crazy?! You're not saying I stole the Grand Star, are you?! The guy who did is is clearly Bowser, the guy who constantly invades the castle!"

"While it is true Bowser invades the castle time and time again, it's also not usual of a tyrant such as Bowser to sneak a steal like a coward!"

"Excuse me?! Could you come a little closer?" Asked an offended Wario. "I couldn't hear you from way over here!"

"I think you can hear me just fine from a five feet away, Mr. Wario. Just enough distance to get you to hear me break your alibi!"

TAKE THAT!

-Closing your Attraction-

"Start talking! Where were you during the night of the incident?" Phoenix demanded.

"What are ya trying to prove here, lawyer?! I was manning my attraction the whole time." Wario claimed.

"Oh, really? If that's the case, then it would contradict this piece of evidence!"

TAKE THAT!

Phoenix pulled out a record of Ashley's testimony of the activities in the carnival streets and said "Sometime before the incident, Ashley, the magic shop keeper noticed that there were no motorcycle noises at some point around 7:50. At that time, you've closed your attraction temporarily before reopening it."

Wario sweated nervously as he said "Me? Close the attraction?! Why would I let suckers with wallets full of money slip by me?"

'Did he just openly admit that he rigged his attraction? Well, that's not important.' "The reason for that is because a certain someone came to you in asking of a favor. And that someone is..."

TAKE THAT!

"A guard by the name of Thomas McToad. The same guard that died during the incident." Hearing that made Wario gulp hard. "Before the theft, McToad came to you with assistance with the gardening."

Wario crossed his arms and narrowed his eyes. "Yeah, he came to me for a favor, but I turned him down, because I don't know the first thing about gardening!"

'Just by looking at you, I think anyone would tell that you're terrible at it.' "But you did know someone who is pretty good at making plants grow. And so do I."

TAKE THAT!

"It was this girl, Ashley." Said Phoenix, showing a mug shot of the said girl.

Wario once again sweated nervously as he said in dismiss "What makes you think that I know that twerp?!"

"Ashley seems to know you, Wario. That night, she was approached by a man in a cloak and with a mustache. during that time, no motorcycles were heard, and Luigi and Mario were both at the parking lot."

Wario cringed before saying "Oh yeah?! Well, what if that mustached man wasn't me, but one of those two lousy plumbers? One of them did leave their post, after all. And as for the motorcycle, The only reason that there were no noises at that time is because not many people come to my attraction."

"That maybe true as well as the fact that one of the brothers left their post, as they've revealed in their testimony. But, there is one thing that proves that neither one of them came anywhere near the magic shop. Luigi was at the pawn shop looking for some form of antique. While it's not clear what he was wanting, it is clear that he wasn't at the magic shop. Leaving you the only possible mystery customer of the magic shop."

Wario flinched at the statement as he said "That's ridiculous! What proof do you have that I was the one who was at the magic shop?!"

"It's funny you should ask that, Mr. Wario." Phoenix said with a smirk.

"Huh?"

"Because I happen to have proof right about here!"

TAKE THAT!

Phoenix pulled out the invoice and showed it to Wario. "This is an invoice recording all of the customers' names, what items they bought, when and how much. And on this part of the list, your name is imprinted along with the item you bought and what time you bought it. And the time is exactly at 7:52 P.M. the night of the Star Carnival!" Wario stretched out his helmet straps which flung at his face as a lock broke into pieces.

Wario pouted as he said "Okay, fine! It was me! I'm the mysterious mustached man that went to Ashley's magic tent! So what?!"

"So, there would be no reason for you to hide your identity, unless you were going to use an item for something illegal."

"I-Illegal?!" Wario repeated. "What sort of illegal things could I be doing?!"

'How about that rigged motorcycle you are using to cheat money out of tourists.' "While I'm not sure yet of what it is, I do know it has something to do with this particular item here."

TAKE THAT!

Phoenix pulls out the golden potion and states "A potion with a yellow color."

"Gah!" Wario jumped in surprise of seeing the potion.

"You were there to buy this from her. It's a potion that's supposed to turn any wooden object into gold, made by Acme."

"Oh yeah?! Well, maybe I was buying it for myself! I'm not ashamed to say I'm committing con artistry!"

'There he goes again, admitting his bad deeds.' "While it could be true that you were buying it for yourself, however, that's not really the case here."

"What do you mean?!" Wario demanded.

"I mean you were buying that potion for someone."

"Hah! Oh yeah! If I really did buy it for someone, who could it have been, pray tell!

"I just might happen to have a hunch on who you bought that bottle of voodoo for. And it's this person here!

TAKE THAT!

Phoenix took out Captain Syrup's mugshot and showed it to Wario. "Captain Maple Syrup! I take that you know each other?"

Seeing the mugshot, Wario said nervously "I... I don't know who that is! I've never met that woman before! Besides, you don't have any proof!"

"Actually, you will be surprise to know that I have the proof right here."

TAKE THAT!

Phoenix pulled out the letter and presented it to Wario. "A letter."

"A letter? What's that got to do with... Ah!" Wario cried in realization.

"Surprised that I got in in my possession? That's because you have a poor way of securing your personal things."

"Uh... Whoops."

"Big whoops! The name may have been scratched out, but it clearly states that someone was wanting to meet you at their pawn shop tent to discuss a big job for the night of the Star Carnival! And Captain Syrup is the only person around here that owns a pawn shop!"

Wario once again pulled on his helmet's straps, making them hit his face as another lock broke. "Alright fine! I did do a little errand for that chick, but I didn't know what she wanted it for!

"Can't really say that you do know, there is one other reason to say that you are the one who stole the Grand Star!"

Wario then let out a boastful laugh, though he was still nervous as he said "Hah! As if you can prove that I stole the fake ship and used it to frame old shell-for-brains!"

"Actually, when we investigated the found replica, there were some odd and suspicious things we've noticed around the ship. And this is one of those suspicious things."

TAKE THAT!

"We've noticed some tire tracks heading south east, the opposite direction of where the ship prop was found."

Wario flinched from hearing this information. "Yeah? Well, those tires could've been from any vehicle!"

"You're right. If there were two sets of tire tracks, it would mean they belong to a something like a jeep. However, this is one single tire track, indicating that they belong to a motorcycle."

"Oh! Uh... Really?"

"Yes really! And you are the only one who's transportation device is motorcycle!" Wario was so shocked of how Phoenix found him out that he fell on his back and let out a fart, with the last lock breaking. Phoenix managed to plug his nose as he thought 'Aw crud! Why did he have to do that? I can smell it in my mouth! Nevertheless, at least I exposed him of his little lie!'

Unlock Successful

Wario got up on his feet, scratching his butt with a bummed look. "Okay, okay, I confess! Captain Syrup and I did plan to steal the Grand Star!"

"I knew it!" Said Phoenix.

"It doesn't color me surprise that you would be a suspect as much as Bowser in this case scenario!" Said a stern Toadsworth.

"Gah, cut me some slack, old timer!" Said Wario.

"We'll cut you some slack after you tell us where the Grand Star is located right now." Phoenix demanded.

Wario let out a sigh in defeat as he said "It's in the replica. It's pretty spacious in there, so any big thing could be carried kept inside. Including the Grand Star. I'll show ya where it's at. Follow me."

August 22, 10:42 Airship Replica Sighting

'Hmm... It looks like everyone up an left. Guess they were done investigating here.' Phoenix thought to himself.

"Come on, we're almost there." Wario said.

As Wario walked ahead of them, Toadsworth rubbed his chin as he said "Mr. Wright, I can't help but get the feeling something isn't right here."

"I'm starting to get the same vibe as you, Toadsworth." Phoenix acknowledged. "This almost seems too easy if Wario is going to lead us to where the Grand Star is. You don't suppose..."

Before Phoenix could finish, Wario called out impatiently "What are ya waiting for, slow pokes?! Get your butts over here!"

Phoenix and Toadsworth looked at each other as they decided to follow along.

August 22, Airship Replica Interior

Once they walked inside, they saw supplies of barrels filled with Stars, three big wooden stars, surrounded by mini wooden figurines and the engine that blew up earlier. "Well here we are, inside that ship. But where is the Grand Star?" Phoenix wondered. "I see smaller stars in barrels, sure, but we're looking for the big one."

"Are you telling us the truth, Wario?" Toadsworth questioned. "Is the Grand Star truly here in this airship?"

"I tell ya, it's the truth! It's right in front of you." Said Wario.

'We don't need metaphors, we need answers.' Phoenix thought to himself. 'Unless it's hidden somewhere behind something. If only he would give us more hints than that.' Phoenix decided to look around their surroundings, starting with the engine. "That's the same engine that blew up. And the wires I'm guessing goes all the way up to the propellers above."

"You are absolutely right, Mr. Wright!" Said Toadsworth. "Unfortunately, it can only take one star power at a time, making it last for five minutes, just as you've heard from Funky Kong."

Phoenix continued looking around and found a long extended piece of rope. "What's this? A piece of rope? It looks like it's been cut from one end."

"Indeed, it does. Is it one of the rope lines that was holding it in place, do you think?" Toadsworth wondered.

"It could be. We might as well take it with us as evidence. Who knows how handy it might be." Phoenix did so in putting the rope in the his inventory and then examined the three wooden stars. "Those wood carved stars look pretty impressive."

"Yes, they almost resemble the Grand Star. But, it's rather curious." Said Toadsworth.

"How do you mean?" Phoenix asked.

"I don't remember any big wooden stars being made by our prep volunteers. Could they have been a secret addition that we weren't aware of?"

Just then, they heard a wooden bumping sound. "Huh? What was that?" Phoenix asked.

They looked around, listening to the noise as to find the source. "Something appears to become knocking about. But where is it coming from?"

Phoenix then spotted one of the barrels barely moving. "Over there! One of the barrels are moving!"

"Why, you're right! I say we take a look inside and see what it could be!" Said Toadsworth as they both approached the barrel of which tipped over and popped open with a figure sliding out. To their surprise, it was a very familiar person all tied up and gagged with a tape.

"M-Master Mario?! My goodness! What is he doing here?" Toadsworth wondered in shock.

Mario muffled as he tried to break free. Phoenix got down on one knee and removed the tape from Mario's mouth. "Ouch!"

"Are you alright?" Phoenix asked.

Mario's only response was "It's a trap!"

Hearing that surprised Phoenix something fierce. "Wh-What?!

Unaware to them, Wario sneaked up on Phoenix from behind and carefully reached in his inventory and took the letter. "Yoink!"

Noticing what was going on, Phoenix turned to Wario with an angry expression. "H-Hey! What do you think you're doing!" Wario pushed Phoenix and ran for the exit.

Phoenix got up as quickly as he could as Toadsworth cried out "After him, quick!"

They then ran after Wario, trying to catch him, only to have their only exit blocked by wooden debris that fell from above. "No! We're caved in!" He then glared at Wario. "What's the big idea?! You double crossed us!"

Wario made a nasty grin at them. "Of course I did, captain obvious! You were so gullible too! You didn't think that I would lead you here so that you can expose the plan, did you?!" Wario then waved the letter in his hand as he said mockingly "And as for this letter, I'll have to make sure I don't lose it again!" He then crumbled up the paper in a ball, opened his mouth wide and tossed the letter in.

"Did... Did he just ate that letter?" Phoenix asked dumbfound.

"Yes, yes he did." Toadsworth confirmed.

Wario laughed as he said "Without the letter, you can't prove that we planned this crime out! Then again, you might not even make it to tomorrow's trail! Ha, ha, ha, ha! Have a rotten day!" With that, Wario up and left.

"Hey! Get back here, you sleaze...!" Phoenix called out in vain. "He's gone. I can't believe this!"

"We'll worry about him later." Said Toadsworth. "For now, we must help untie Master Mario."

Phoenix let out a sigh. "I guess you're right. Let's help him out." No sooner did they get Mario unbounded and helped him on his feet.

Mario dusted himself off as he said "Thanks for the help. I thought I was gonna be stuck here forever."

"What were you even doing in that barrel, Master Mario?" Toadsworth asked.

Mario slumped his shoulders with a sad expression as he said "Well, after I left the courtroom, I did a little investigating, trying to help my brother. I heard that the airship replica was found, but when I got here, I was knocked unconscious."

"My goodness! That's just terrible!" Toadsworth exclaimed.

"Who did this to you? Did you get a good view of who it was?" Phoenix asked.

"Sad to say, no. All I heard was a female voice saying 'my my, we can't have someone snooping for our new found treasure, now can we?' Then afterwards, I blacked out." Said Mario.

"A female voice? It can't possibly be the princess, that's for sure." Said Phoenix.

"It can't possibly be. Why would the princess steal the Grand Star when it's already in her possession?" Toadsworth pointed out.

"That's a good point there. I don't think it was Ashley either. That leave only one possible suspect." Said Phoenix.

"I couldn't agree more, Mr. Wright! There's no other possibility!" Said a determined Toadsworth.

Mario then said "I can't believe that I let this happen! I let myself get tied up and now look."

"Hey, it's not your fault. Me and Toadsworth led ourselves into this trap, so we can only blame ourselves." Phoenix assured.

"Still, I should've left the investigating to you. Despite what happened today." Said Mario.

Phoenix felt bad, remembering how he raised suspicion on Luigi, Mari's brother. "Yeah. Listen. I'm really sorry that I did that to you guys. I thought it was the best way to buy us sometime to investigate some more."

Mario looked at Phoenix and then said "Well, it's all water under the bridge, given the situation. If we ever get out of here, you better make sure Bowser is found innocent and get the real culprit behind bars!"

Phoenix had a determined look on his face as he said "Alright! Let's find a way out, and then get the perpetrator behind this murder-theft!" Phoenix then thought of a question to ask the red plumber. "By the way, did you come across something while you were here?"

Mario rubbed his chin in thought as he said "Well, when I came here, the police were still investigating the outside of the ship, so I sneaked inside and found some very strange things."

"Like what?"

"Like the golden statues in the barrel for example." Mario said, showing them some gold figurine statues mixed with the Stars. "It's kind of hard to tell with the shinny stars around them, but there are definitely little statues among them."

"Say, you're right. But what are they doing here, do you think?" They continued investigating the area, when Phoenix noticed something in the barrel Mario was trapped in. "Hey, what's this?" Phoenix reached in the barrel and pulled out a full head mask that resembles Bowser. "It's... It's the Bowser mask!"

Toadsworth was equally surprised. "Why, you're right, Mr. Wright! It's the mask the police were having a hard time searching for. So it was hidden in one of these barrels the whole time."

"Yeah, and look. One of the horns is missing." Said Phoenix.

"Hey, you're right." Said Mario. "And it's on the right side where it fell off."

"And that same horn is the one Bowser used to damage the engine." Said Toadsworth.

Mario then noticed something glimmering behind some barrels. "Hey, what's that shinning over there?"

Phoenix and Toadsworth looked at where Mario was pointing. "Let's find out." Said Phoenix as they all moved the barrels.

After they moved the wooden containers, Toadsworth arched his back with one hand on his lower hips. "Oh... Blast it all. My poor back. I'm not as young as I used to be."

"Sorry, Toadsworth. You didn't have to help us." Said Mario.

"Take a look at this!" Said Phoenix as he pointed at a pile of Stars and golden statues. "It's a pile of Stars and gold figurines. They must have been dumped out of that one barrel Mario was stuffed in."

"Yes, it would seem so." Said Toadsworth. "They also hid them so that no toon would suspect something."

"I'm also getting a strange vibe that these statues are somehow familiar." Said Phoenix. Just then, they heard some foot steps coming down stairs.

"Hold a moment! Do you hear that?" Said Toadsworth with an surprised look.

"Yeah, someone's coming down here. But who is it?" Phoenix wondered as they waited with anticipation.

They then heard a familiar voice call out "Hey, is anybody down there?" The voice lit up their faces, mostly Mario's.

"Wait, that voice. It's..." Mario said half way when the person behind the debris revealed himself to be Mario's brother. "Luigi!"

From behind Luigi was another familiar face. "And don't forget Funky Kong, yo!"

"Hang on, we'll get you out of here! Just stand back!" Luigi took out a hammer and started smashing all of the obstacles blocking the exit. Once that was done, Luigi put the hammer away. "That should do it."

"Thanks for the help. I thought we would be stuck in here forever." Said Phoenix.

"Luigi, what are you doing here?" Mario asked relieved to see his brother.

Luigi scratched his noes and said "Oh, they were done with questioning me and let me go. I went to the princess asking where you were, bro. When I heard you were going to see the fake airship that was found, I came here as soon as possible. And it looks like I was right on time, too."

Mario let out a sigh and rolled his eyes. "Leave it to my little brother to come to the rescue." He said with a smile. "Well, it's good to see you again, Luigi."

"We've only separated for half an hour." Luigi claimed, when he suddenly started to form tears. "Although... it did felt like years to me..."

Mario started to get all chocked up as well as he said "Aw, come here, little bro!" They then embraced each other in a hug, happy to be reunited.

Phoenix looked at Mario and Luigi, feeling glad to see the two brothers hugging it out. Luigi then noticed an odd smell, almost pleasant. "Hey, bro? Are you wearing... perfume?"

Mario broke the hug and looked at Luigi confused. "Huh? What makes you say that?"

"When we hugged, you smelled almost like cinnamon." Luigi answered.

Mario looked at Luigi with a mad glare and said "Well, I'll tell you one thing, I did not put on any perfume! Why would I even do that?"

"But then why do you smell like that?" Phoenix asked.

"I wish I knew." Mario said honestly. "I didn't smell like this until I was unconscious."

'Could his attacker have sprayed some perfume on him? But for what reason? That smell also seems somewhat familiar. But I think I'll worry about that later.' Phoenix then asked Luigi "So who told you that he would be here?"

"Princess Peach told me. Mario came to tell her that he would take the investigating himself." Said Luigi. "It was at 10:40 when I was on my way here. It was a really long walk."

Funky Kong then added "I was over at the castle to tell Princes P. the condition of the ship, and I met up with the Green Wonder here."

Mario then said with an annoyed look "For your information, this 'Green Wonder' just got us out of jam!"

Funky Kong chuckled nervously at the mad plumber as he continued explaining. "Anyway, when we got here, we heard some voices coming from inside, so we came in and found you guys."

"Looks like someone up there knew that this would happen and had it all planed out for luck to be on our side." Said Phoenix.

"That's one way to put it, yeah." Said Funky Kong. "How long have you guys been down here, by the way?"

Toadsworth gave it some thought as he said "From what I can tell, I'd say about three to five minutes. We found Mario all tied up and concealed in a barrel. Who knows how long he was in there."

Luigi then turned to his older brother, concerned. "You okay though, right bro?"

"Yeah, I'm fine." Mario said, when he felt then felt his throat was a little dry. "Actually, I'm kind of parched. I could use form water."

"No problem! Be back in a jiffy!" Luigi went out to get some water. When he came back, he carried a bucket full of water. "Here you are, Mario! A nice fresh bucket of water. Hope this helps."

"Thanks Luigi." Mario said in gratefulness as he reached for the bucket.

Luigi walked to Mario to give him the bucket when he suddenly tripped on a ladder and dumped the water on him. "Whoops!"

Mario was all drenched in water with an annoyed look on his face. "Yeah, thanks a lot!"

Luigi scratched his head with a nervous smile after noticing his mistake. "Uh... Sorry, bro. The ladder was in the way."

"It's not just a ladder, it's a step ladder." Mario corrected.

The water got on the statues as well, and Toadsworth noticed something odd about the water trickling on them. "Mater Mario! Master Luigi! Come look here! The statues!"

Everyone looked at where Toadsworth was pointing at statues, seeing some brown appearing on them, which made them confused. "Hey, w-what's with these statues? What's that brown stuff they got on them?" Luigi asked.

Examining the statues, Phoenix thought to himself 'Why are these statues turning brown when that water was trickling down on them?' Phoenix peeled the brown area with some dust falling off. "Hmm... Hey, Luigi. Go get some more water."

Luigi looked at Phoenix confused. "Huh? Why?"

"Just do it real quick!"

Luigi flinched as he said "Wow! O-Okay, okay! I'm going!" Luigi went out to get more water and came back later with some in a bucket. "Okay. Here it is. Now what?"

"Alright, just dump it on the statues and let's see what happens." Said Phoenix as Luigi went and did so. Once the water splashed on the statues, their golden pattern turned into that of wood. "Just as I thought. These golden statues aren't golden at all. They were just wooden the whole time!"

Everyone in the room was shocked to hear of this revelation as they cried out "Wooden?!"

"Yup, these golden statues are fake." Said Phoenix.

"Ow, that is so not cool, ya'll!" Funky Kong exclaimed. "Who would go and do something as dishonest as this?"

'I think I might know exactly who it is.' Said Phoenix, remembering Captain Syrup with the Psyche Locks around her. 'That woman at the pawn shop is nothing more than a con artist, and it's high time I expose her. But before that, there's one more matter to take care off.' He then called out "Hey, Luigi."

Luigi gave Phoenix attention "Yeah?"

"You know the court is aware of you being at the pawn shop the night of the incident. What exactly were you doing there?"

Luigi scratched the back of his head with an embarrassed chuckle before saying "Uh... Well, you see... Me and Mario were thinking of a present to give to Princess Peach on her birthday."

Phoenix was surprised to hear this. "The princess' birthday? Was that the night during the Star Festival?"

"Not really. We figured since stuff from around the kingdom far and wide was here, it would be a good opportunity to look for a gift the princess would like." Luigi explained. "That's when I left my post and came across this pawn shop that I mentioned."

"Uh... Not that it's any of my business, but what kind of gift did you have in mind." Phoenix asked.

"Oh, there were all sorts of wonderful antiques, I couldn't tell which one to buy. Then I spotted a golden Toad statue. It looked so rich and neat, and since it was a Toad, I knew right away that Peach would love it. So, I've asked the lady to keep it reserved for me when I got back."

"Can you tell me if you saw anything strange while you were shopping?"

Luigi rubbed his chin in thought. "Hmm.. actually, I did notice Bowser's airship way up in the sky heading south of town."

"Heading south of town? That's Exactly what Bowser told us." Said Phoenix. "He was out looking for the replica so he could sabotage it."

"Sabotage?!" Mario and Luigi cried in surprise.

"Why that scaly hot breath!" Mario said angrily. "He was trying to ruin the play for everyone!"

"But why would he head south?" Luigi wondered. "The airship was located north right behind the castle."

"That's a very good question." Said Phoenix. "It could be a case of misinformation."

"Yes, it was all to set him up." Said Toadsworth. "Have him go in the wrong direction, while the real culprit goes to steal the Musrhoom Kingdom's sacred treasure, there for framing the King of Koopas. It's the perfect crime!"

"Nearly perfect anyway. Looks like we're going to pay another visit to the lovely Captain herself." Said Phoenix as he and Toadsworth went out of the fake ship and back into town.

August 22, 11:00 A.M. Syrup's Pawn Shop

Once they arrived, Toadsworth noticed something odd as he said in a half whisper "Mr. Wright, hide!"

Phoenix did so as he asked "What is it? What's wrong?"

"It's Wario. He's over there talking to Captain Syrup."

"He is? Then let's listen of what he as to say."

"Hmm... While it is rude to eavesdrop, I'd say that's a rather cunning idea."

As they listened in, they heard Syrup say "So, you took care of the little problem?"

Wario laughed as he said "You betcha, I did! You should've seen the looks on their faces when I swiped the letter from them! They won't be a bother to us, now."

"How delightful! With that lawyer out of the picture, we'll be sure to make way with the treasure right under their noses!" Said Syrup as she laughed with glee. "But for now, we should get ready to give out our testimonies tomorrow."

"No problem, sweet cheeks." Wario assured. "I came up with a story that is so emotional, it'll make a grown Thwomp cry!"

"I should hope so, lest you slip up like what you did earlier!" Said Syrup with an intimidating mad glare.

Wario shrugged his shoulders as he said "Don't get your pot all steamy, toots! I said I fixed it. Er... more like swallowed it. Well, I better get out of here before somebody sees us together." He then jump on his motorcycle and started the engine. "Later, muffin top!" With that said, Wario sped off out of sight.

"He's gone." Said Phoenix, stating the obvious.

"It looks like some perjury is brewing about here." Said Toadsworth.

"Now's our chance to confront the captain with our trusty swords. Uh... Metaphorically speaking." Said Phoenix with a nervous smile.

"I agree, but I suggest we keep hush-hush of her meeting with Wario, like we just saw." Toadsworth suggested.

'More good advice from the elderly. Makes me glad that I have an experienced person as an investigation partner for a change.' "Alright then, let's go." They came out of hiding and walked up to the tent. "Um, hello again."

Syrup noticed them and at first looked shocked and angry, clutching on to her compass. "Ah! You?!" Syrup then collected herself and became calm. "Oh, why hello there, cutie. Nice to see you again. Is there anything you need."

'It sort of feels good to see that shocked expression on her face. Makes me want to boast about it. But I'd better take Toadsworth's advice in effect.' "Actually, we do need something. When we left, I believe I said we would come back to you if we had more questions."

"Ah yes, I remember clearly. Well, if you do have questions, ask away." Syrup said, which Phoenix takes as a challenge.

'Oh, I will, Captain Syrup. I will.'

-Reason for Closing-

"Can you tell me in detail what was going on, before the incident?"

"Well, I can't say anything interesting other than Bowser's arrest happened at the streets, if that's what you want to know."

"I'm aware of that, however, what you're telling me can't possibly be true."

Captain Syrup looked offended as she said "I beg your pardon?! Are you saying that I'm lying?! The nerve!"

"Well, if you were telling the truth, then it would contradict this statement..."

TAKE THAT!

Phoenix pulls out a record of Luigi's testimony, showing it to Syrup. "When Bowser was arrested for suspicion, Luigi mentioned something about your shop being closed, meaning you weren't there to witness his arrest."

Syrup sweated nervously as she claimed "That's only because I had some errands to run! Business requires a lot of plans and organizing, just so you know."

"That may sound like a reasonable alibi. Mind if you tell us what kind of errands you were attending?"

"I... was out delivering orders for certain customers. Some people are on the go, now-a-days." Syrup claimed. "When I came back, that's when I saw the arrest."

"Well, anyone might buy that is when you saw the arrest, however, there is one other fact that you failed to mention."

"Oh? And what would that be?"

"During the festival, some people would come to your tent. One of them was, of course, Luigi. However, another person that came to your tent was..."

TAKE THAT!

"Bowser, the Koopa King. He arrived at the carnival that night, and he visited a couple of tents, and one of them was yours." Phoenix stated, causing Syrup to flinch in shock.

"Well, yes, I suppose I did forget to tell you of that." Syrup admitted. "He came as a customer, looking to see what he would like to buy."

"But he didn't buy anything, did he?"

"Well, no. He only came to brows and then left."

"It seems you're neglecting to tell the whole truth again."

"Wh-What are you talking about?! It's true! He came to my shop and didn't buy a single thing!" Syrup stated.

"That maybe true, but if it is, then that would be because you told him something that he never knew about."

TAKE THAT!

Phoenix took out the pamphlet and showed it to Syrup. "The play that was meant to be performed during the Star Festival, depicting Mario's fight against the Koopa King himself. Almost everyone was aware of this, except for Bowser, who could only know about it from someone. Needless to say, he was appalled when he heard about it."

"Oh, and what makes you think it was me who told him about it?" Syrup questioned. "It could've been anyone who mentioned about the play."

"Yes, it could've been anyone. However, there was someone who saw Bowser at the pawn shop and shouting that he was told about the play that offends him."

"You're claiming that there is a witness who says they saw me talking to the Koopa King about that silly play?" Syrup asked in question.

"While the witness didn't exactly see who Bowser was talking to, it is clear that he was at your pawn shop when he learned about the play." Hearing that made Syrup sweat again as one of the locks broke.

"Alright, so I did tell the Koopa King about the performance, but that still doesn't change the fact that he stole the Grand Star and murdered that guard!"

"Actually, it does."

"Wh-What are you getting at?!" Syrup asked, clutching her compass to subdue her anger. "Are you accusing me as the culprit?! How dare you address a lady with such a title!"

'Well, we'll see just how much of a lady you are, Captain Syrup.' Phoenix thought to himself. "If Bowser really did steal the Grand Star, then this would be the strangest calling card someone like him would leave behind."

TAKE THAT!

Phoenix presented Syrup with a photo of the Goomba statue as he asked "I think you might recognize this shinny little object, captain."

Syrup looked at the picture and said "Th-That's... That's... Erm..."

"It's a statue of a Goomba made of gold, and it was found in the center of the hedge maze, placed on the pedestal where the Grand Star was supposed to be, shined on by some searchlights to make it glimmer just like the Grand Star. And you happen to have some gold figurines of every race and creature of the Mushroom Kingdom."

"Well, it... I-It's plain obvious that Bowser bought that statue from my shop and was planing to use it for his criminal plans! That would be explanation enough on why that statue was there." Said Syrup.

"That might be the case, however, you just told me earlier that he didn't buy anything in your shop. Meaning you were the only person who used that statue, is you!"

Hearing that made Syrup realize her mistake. "So just because I made that little mistake, your going to pin the crime on me?! I have never been so insulted!"

"I take that you have something to back up your alibi?" Phoenix asked.

"I do. You're saying that I slipped into the castle courtyard over it's big walls, traveled through the maze and stole the Grand Star, then exited the maze and finally climbed back over the walls? That's some imagination you have, attorney! Bowser would've stolen it much faster, because he has his airship."

"That maybe, however, there was something that could've been used to do the same exact thing."

TAKE THAT!

"During the festival, it was reported that a replica of Bowser's airship had vanished, with the ropes holding it down cut off. It functions exactly as the real thing, meaning it can hover in midair like a helicopter." Syrup cringed as she tried to keep her cool. "That is how you were able to commit the crime, by flying the replica airship over the courtyard!" With that said, another lock shattered.

Syrup crossed her arms and narrowed her head. "Fine, I suppose that is proof that someone else could've committed the crime. But that's not enough to prove that it was me who did it!"

"Actually, there is proof that you were riding on that airship. This is the proof right here!

TAKE THAT!

"On board the ship, there were some barrels down below. Inside them were some Star Powers, and something else." Said Phoenix, making Syrup stiff. "Blending in with the Stars were some golden statues of different figures. One of these statues was left at the courtyard, as we've just established, and I doubt that anyone around here could afford all of the statues, since they cost a huge amount of money."

Syrup growled in anger as the last lock broke and the chains went away.

Unlock Successful

"You might as well fess up. The evidence we've gathered so far points to you as a suspect." Phoenix stated.

In defeat, Captain Syrup said "Fine, I confess. I did plan to steal the Grand Star, and I've succeeded. I stole it so that I would hold it for ransom."

"So then it was you who send that ransom note to the castle door step!" Said Toadsworth.

"Thank you for pointing the obvious, you old geezer." Syrup then made a devious smirk and said "But it's not like anyone will believe you."

"What makes you so sure?" Phoenix asked.

"Simple, I'll just appear in court tomorrow as the witness, and tell them a story that will convince everyone that your client is the guilty party. You think you're so clever now, but I'll make sure that you walk the plank during the trail!" With that said, Captain Syrup took her leave.

'The only person that'll be walking the plank is you and your partner in crime.' Phoenix thought with confidence.

Toadsworth then said "Mr. Wright, Captain Syrup sounds very confident that she will have the jury on her side."

"I know. I've dealt with stuff like this before." Phoenix then assured "But, I'm sure that with my bluffing skills, I'll bring fourth the truth behind all of this."

Toadswroth then held up his cane with enthusiasm and said "Surely, you would, Mr. Wright! Princess Toadstool has full faith in you, and so do I!"

'The trail is tomorrow, and it's about time to prove Bowser innocent. Even though I know that Captain Syrup planned this crime, and had an accomplice, it's still unclear how McToad was killed. Plus, we have no idea where the Grand Star is being kept. Hopefully in court, I'll dig up the answer.'

To be continued...

I'm really, really sorry how long it took me to update this. Major writers block, not that it's an excuse, I guess. Anyway, hope you're enjoying this case so far. Hopefully, I'll finish it in time to get started on the next case on Shaggy Rogers for Halloween. (R&R)
