A/N: This chapter is sad. Well, to me it is anyway. Enjoy!
Chapter 13: Say Something
The happiness Olivia had yesterday wasn't there today. She felt like she was on an emotional rollercoaster ever since she got to work that day. One minute she was happy, the next she felt miserable. She knew what was causing her mood swings. The inevitable was going to take place in a matter of hours. There was no right way to tell him except to just be truthful. She just was going to have to rely on faith that everything was going to work out.
There was a knock at her door and Olivia knew it was Jake.
"Well, don't you look stunning tonight," Jake said with a grin. She wore a dress she knew he loved and was glad he noticed. Like always.
Olivia gave him a small smile. "Thank you."
"Is everything ok?"
"Yeah," Olivia said. "Just starving at the moment." She raised herself up on her toes in order to kiss him on the lips.
He looked at her a bit. Trying to figure out what was going on by he let it go. "I'm ready whenever you are then," Jake said.
Jake thought they were going to have a great evening but they didn't. Olivia was a lot quieter than she usually is. She also seemed to zone out half of the time. He didn't know what was going on but he was determined to find out when they got back to her apartment.
"Care to explain why you were so quite at dinner tonight?" Jake asked as closed the door behind him.
"I had a long day today. I'm going to change," she responded while heading in the direction of her bedroom.
"No, Olivia. We need to discuss what's going on here. Not later, now."
Olivia stopped walking and took a deep breath. She knew that evening was about to get worse but she was going to face this situation head on. She turned around.
"Why are you shutting me out?" he asked with concern in his voice. "If you're still upset with me just tell me so we can work on it."
"Jake, I'm not trying to doing that."
"Well, you are."
"I," Olivia started. "I screwed up. I did something that could have possibly ruined our relationship."
"What?" Jake was confused. His mind went into overdrive, thinking about what the worst thing Olivia could have done to put their relationship in jeopardy. But it didn't take him long to come up with scenario.
"Fitz," he said. "He's the reason you're acting this way, isn't it?"
Olivia just started at him. Guilt was still eating away at her.
Jake took a few steps towards her. "What was it? Did you confine in him?" He stopped moving. "Kiss him?"
Olivia looked away from him.
He swallowed hard before he let the next words come out. "You slept with him?"
The question seemed to linger in the air for an eternity before Olivia answered.
"Yes," she whispered, now looking at him.
The one little word came down on Jake like a ton of bricks. He took a few steps backwards before turning his back to her. Jake ran his hand down the length of his face. He couldn't believe it. After all the faith and trust he put in her, she did the worse thing imaginable. He felt tears well up in his eyes. He thought he already experienced emotional pain at its worse before but this was it. That's when his sadness gave way to anger.
"You couldn't wait to do it, could you?" he questioned calmly. Sleep with the man that you gave your heart to so long ago. Perhaps he still has your heart. More than I ever did. Now that I think about it in more depth it sounds about right."
"Jake, that's not true. I swear it is not true," Olivia said, hoping he would understand her. But he didn't.
He spun around and yelled, "Did why did you do it Olivia?!" Jake's anger and outburst startled her so badly that it caused her to jump. "What could possible make you want to do some shit like this to me!"
Olivia never saw Jake like this before. He was always able to control his emotions. But this time was completely different. There was coldness in his eyes that scared her. The look of disgust on his face disappointed her.
"It..it was a mistake., Olivia said trying to gather her thoughts. "I got you drunk and-"
"You got drunk," Jake repeated. "That's not a valid excuse. Do you know how many times I've gotten drunk and managed not to sleep with someone I didn't want? The way I look at it is that you wanted to sleep with him. Look at how long it took before it happened. One week. One freaking week!" Jake said in frustration.
"Don't you think I know that?! I should not have slept with him. My head was not in the right place. I was hurting. I was lonely. I missed you in ways I didn't think was possible. One thing led to another that night with Fitz. I am embarrassed and ashamed of what happened. And regardless of you might think right now sleeping with him was never intention."
"I don't believe that. Obviously you were trying take away this so call pain you were feeling. Instead of calling me to fix things you found comfort in his arms. You opened your legs for him Olivia. It's hard for me to except that. This is someone you said you moved on from. So what else am I suppose to think? You have history with him and I understand that. On some level I respect that because it it's in the past. But you doing this tell me a lot about how you feel about us. We never meant anything to you. Not the little moments we shared, the countless hours we spent making love." He grabbed her left hand and held it up. "Or the dream we had about spending the rest of our lives together."
"But we can still have that Jake. There's nothing keeping us from that. We can move pass this. It'll take time. A lot of time to heal and trust again but we can get to the place we once were. Just tell me what I have to do to make this up to you? To get you to realize that I still want you and only you. Our relationship means everything to us. That's why I'm fighting so hard for you. I just need you to do the same because I know you still love me."
Jake dropped her hand and looked away briefly.
"You still do love me…right?" Olivia was never more afraid to ask a question in her life.
He didn't answer her immediately and she felt a knot forming in her stomach.
"Say something," Olivia pleaded.
"I still love you," Jake said honestly. "I will always be in love with you too." Jake paused and took a moment to stare into her eyes. This was it. All of it was going to end like this. He loved her with every cell in his body but it was not longer enough. "I just can't do this anymore."
"Jacob," Olivia said. "Don't…don't do this us. Please." Those were the only words she got out before tears came.
The desperation in Olivia's voice and her tears pulled at Jake's heart strings. He was aware that he could stay have her. Just like he always wanted to the moment he laid eyes on her. They still could go on to have an amazing marriage and watch their kids grow up. Wake up and go to sleep each other arms for the rest of their lives. But he wasn't going to give in. Not this time. Staying with her would only remind him of what happened. He would continue to question her loyalty, always wonder if she was thinking of Fitz when she was with him. More than anything, the pain of betrayal would never go away. No matter how hard he would try to forget it. For once, he was going to put himself ahead of his love for Olivia.
"I have to go," Jake said, feeling himself starting to choke up. Seeing Olivia cry always hurt him to the core. And knowing he was the cause of that made him feel terrible.
But Olivia reached out for him, stopping him from leaving. "Wait," she got out.
Jake waited for her to wipe her tears away before continuing.
"Don't let it end like this. Give me one last night with you. We won't do anything. I just need you here with me. Let me pretend that our relationship will not end this way. Can I have that much?
A/N: Let me know what you thought.
