-Gabe's POV-
Ha! Fuck yes it is my turn. Victor asked Sang last night which means that I get to start my romancing. While Trouble was in the bathroom getting ready for school I snuck part one into her backpack. There is no way I am just going to walk up and ask her out, I know the other guys are doing that, but that is not my style.
"Meanie are you ready?" Sang walked over to me and started to reach for her bag. I pulled it away from her hand though.
"I'll carry it Trouble. Victor is already down by the car, let's go."
I made sure to hang on to her bag in the car, I don't want her finding her first clue too early. When we got to the courtyard Kota and Nathan were already there. I looked at Kota who nodded at me before looking to Nathan. He didn't look away from me and I read an apology on his face. I know he didn't fucking mean it, but I'll be damned if he ruins this because he can't fucking share. I nodded at him to let him know it was done and he turned his attention to Sang. They talked for a while last night after Victor told her what happened.
Luke, North and Silas showed up just before we needed to head inside for homeroom. North and Luke walked Sang to class and now I just had to wait for Sang to look in her backpack.
-Sang's POV-
It was getting harder to get excited about school. It felt like we were finally getting somewhere with what Mr. Hendrix is up to but there was nothing we could do during school. I couldn't wait for the guys to finish their assignment, I knew it was a big deal for them. On the other hand though, I still don't know what will happen when they are done or at the end of the school year. What will I do? I know I will still see them outside of school, but could I do this day after day for the next few years without them by my side?
I reached into my backpack to pull out a notebook and pen. I felt something stuck to the front of my notebook and when I pulled it out I saw an envelope with my name on it. At first I was nervous that Volto got to my bag. I looked around, but North's head was down on his arms on the desk and Luke was typing on his phone. I opened the envelope and saw what looked like an oddly shaped cardboard puzzle piece and a piece of paper.
Dear Trouble,
Here is the first clue. Look for the next one where you first tried to save my life, even though I told you to run away.
Meanie
Meanie put this in my bag? He was sending me clues? Clues for what? When did I try to save his life? O right, outside of the locker room by the gym. Was the clue there now? There is no way I could make it there in between classes. I looked at the puzzle piece, it had almost a small half circle or oval on two of the sides. The background looked painted with orange and pink swirls and brush strokes and in black lettering it said 'You Go'. That's it, just 'you go'. I go what? Ugh Meanie, what does that mean? The bell rang and I shoved the letter and puzzle piece in my bag.
I waited for Gabe to sit down in English before saying something. "Meanie…"
He looked over at me pushing a finger to his lips. "Shhh, Trouble. It's our little secret for now." He smiled and his eyes sparkled.
The day dragged on. Gabe wouldn't give me any more clues and wouldn't let me say anything in front of the guys. I thought I could sneak away during lunch to see if I could find the clue, but Gabe kept a close eye on me and wouldn't let me leave. Victor walked me right from Japanese to the Girls Locker Room so I didn't have any chance to look around for Gabe's next clue then either. I knew I wouldn't be able to sneak out during class without freaking Gabe and Nathan out, so I figured I would just get through the class.
I changed as fast I could and rushed out to the hall. I scanned the wall, thinking he would have taped it up somewhere. The walls were totally blank, but I kept turning around in a circle. I know this is the place he meant, but where could he have put it? I decided to just wait until the guys came out and then maybe I could get a hint from Gabe. I backed up against the wall and looked down at my feet while other students started to trickle out of the locker rooms. And that's when I saw it, a crumbled piece of paper attached to a small envelope. I almost didn't see it at all and nobody else seemed to see it either. I bent down to pick it up and smoothed out the paper.
Dear Trouble,
Congrats on finding clue #2. You are half way there. You will find the next clue tomorrow in one of your classes. It won't tell you if it will be the first or the third but it will be the one where beautiful sounds can be heard.
Meanie
I looked at the puzzle piece, it looked similar to the first one but it said 'Out'. My first thought was that I had to wait until tomorrow for my next clue. My second thought was trying to figure out which class he meant. Where can beautiful sounds be heard? The only thing I could think of was my music class, but that was with Mr. Blackbourne. Would Gabe sneak something in the music room?
"What is that Peanut?" Nathan was walking towards me with Gabe right behind him. I started to hold it up to show him, but Gabe quickly stepped around him and grabbed the paper and puzzle piece. "Looks like Trouble is trying to help keep the school clean. It's just some trash. As he was saying it he crumbled the paper back up and shoved it in his pocket. He picked up my backpack and started walking away. Nathan grabbed my hand and pulled me after Gabe.
Kota had to leave as soon as he dropped us off at Nathan's, but before he left he told us to finish our homework. I opened my backpack and saw the second puzzle piece and paper inside. Gabe must have slipped it in when he took my bag after gym. I looked around and saw Gabe smiling at me. Nathan stood up from the couch and headed into the kitchen, probably to some water and snacks for us. It was just Gabe and me.
"Meanie, why can't you give me another clue now?"
He smiled over at me and laughed. "Jeez Trouble, you need to learn fucking patience. What fun would it be if I gave you all the clues at once?"
Nathan walked back in with the snacks and Gabe looked back down at his notebook. I still didn't know why he wouldn't talk about it in front of the other guys. I opened my bag to pretend and look for something, but instead I practically stuck my head inside so I could try piece together the puzzle pieces. When I put them up against each other though they didn't match up. Both pieces had the half circle thing cut out of the two sides, I needed a piece that had the other part of the circle sticking out so they would fit together. And now I have to wait until tomorrow? I decided to get my homework done, it helped keep my mind of my secret message from Gabriel, for a while at least.
The rest of the night was pretty uneventful. I woke up when Gabe's phone alarm went off. I rolled over and pushed my head into the pillow. I felt Gabe's lips on my ear as he whispered "clue number three today Trouble." That woke me up and I bounced up onto my knees, brushing the hair out of my face. Gabe was still laughing at my sudden burst of energy when Nathan walked back into the bedroom. He was already dressed for school and his hair was still a little wet from the shower.
"I was just coming in to wake you up. I'll get something together for breakfast while you shower Peanut." I ran into the bathroom, afraid I wouldn't have enough time to take a bath and have breakfast.
I rushed through my bath and quickly got dressed. I looked at my hair and was not feeling up to doing anything with it so I started looking around for a clip. I couldn't find anything in the bathroom, so I went to Nathan's room to look around on the dresser. How is it possible that there are no clips anywhere? Between Luke and me you would think there would be one left lying around.
"Looking for something Trouble?" I turned to find Gabe standing in the doorway, shoulder leaning against the door frame and a clip in his hand. He was already dressed in his uniform and the only way to describe his smile was sneaky.
"Please Meanie? Just for today." I stuck my lip out in a pout.
"Absolutely not Trouble. And do not stick the lip out. You may be able to get away with that other times, but when it comes to your hair I am too stubborn."
I huffed at him as I walked by to go back into the bathroom. On my way I grabbed his hand to tug him along with me.
"If you are not going to let me have a clip, than you are going to help me do something with my hair that is up to your standards, but out of my face." I heard him chuckle behind me.
I made it through the first few periods without day dreaming too much. I am usually much better at focusing, but today my mind was wandering. I started off thinking about what Gabe's secret message would be. I had a feeling it had to do with asking me out, but I was excited to see if it would give a hint as to where he would want to take me. It didn't stop there though, when I saw Luke in homeroom I couldn't help thinking about how fun the cooking class would be with him. Somehow I made it to English, although I don't really remember walking to class. When Kota sat down I smiled at him and remembered our museum date. I saw him smile at me and in triggered the memory of our kiss in his car. He literally snapped his fingers in front of my face to snap me out of it.
"Are you okay Sang? You look dazed."
"I know that fucking look, I see it on Luke all the time. She is fucking day dreaming. You are rubbing off on her Luke."
"Aw sweetie, it's like we are twins! I was just daydreaming too!" I giggled and smiled at Luke and he smiled and winked back at me.
Kota turned back around to face the front of the class, but I am pretty sure I heard him mumble something like "great, because we need two daydreamers in the group" which made me smile, because it meant he considered me part of the group. I know he did, but it was nice to actually hear him say it.
North walked me to the music room and for once I didn't hesitate to go in. I think it caught North off guard because he started to follow me in.
"You can head to class Mr. Taylor." Mr. Blackbourne was sitting on the piano bench with me violin case next to him. I turned to look at North, he squeezed my hand and turned around to leave the room.
"Miss Sorenson, would you like to actually see your violin today? I am not sure the last time we even took it out of the case."
"We have been busy." I walked towards him and sat on the other end of the bench. As I walked I looked around the room, trying to be subtle but I am sure it was obvious I was looking for something. I couldn't see any crumbled paper or envelope. Mr. Blackbourne didn't mention anything even though I am sure he noticed.
"While that is true, I did promise you that I would teach you how to play, and eventually I will. Open up your case and take out your violin please."
I stood up to open the case and saw an envelope taped to the inside of the cover. I looked up at Mr. Blackbourne, he was staring at me, but I couldn't read anything in his expression. He nodded his head once as if to give me permission to open the envelope now. I took out the paper first.
Dear Trouble,
See, patience pays off. Only one more clue to go. You will have to wait a little longer for this one too. I hope it is worth it. The next clue and I will join you for breakfast tomorrow morning.
Meanie
P.S. Tell Mr. B. that I am sorry for interrupting your music lesson
I laughed at the last part. I looked up and saw that Mr. Blackbourne was still looking at me. "Gabe says that he is sorry for interrupting our lesson." He gave me his millimeter smile before responding. "Are you going to look at what is in the envelope? I am interested to see what had Mr. Coleman so excited this morning when he dropped your violin off in my office."
I turned the envelope so the puzzle piece fell out. As I expected it looked the same as the other pieces except the two sides had a half circle sticking out. On the front it said 'Will'. I dug the other pieces out of my bag and laid them on the bench. I fitted the new piece to the first and second pieces, so it said 'Will You Go Out'. That's not what caught my attention though. When I fitted the half circles of the new piece into the other pieces I saw that they were not circles, they were hearts. Each piece had half a heart and when I put them together it formed a full heart, hidden hearts in the swirls of the painting behind them. My breath caught and I felt Mr. Blackbourne shift so he could see over my shoulder. I looked up at him and I noticed that he looked…concerned?
"Is this not what you were expecting Miss Sorenson?"
"No, I mean yes. I mean you never know what to expect with Gabe. I thought I knew what to expect, but then he did this and it was even more than I could expect." I looked back down at the almost finished puzzle before putting it away in my bag.
"I would assume then, from your response that everything is going okay with the guys." Should I tell him about my conversation with Nathan? Does he know that Nathan punched Gabe while I was out with Kota?
"Let me rephrase that Miss Sorenson. What I should have said is, other than the incident between Mr. Griffin and Mr. Coleman on Sunday, is everything going alright?"
I smiled at the way he phrased it. It felt like more than an incident at the time, but I guess that was as good a way as any to describe it.
"Yes, and I talked to Nathan about that, he said he will be more calm in the future."
"I spoke to him as well. However, if anything else happens that makes you feel uncomfortable or unsure about our present circumstances please let me know right away." I nodded.
I actually got to hold my violin for a few minutes before the bell rang sounding the end of the period.
-Luke's POV-
After school, North drove Gabe and me to the diner. The three of us were working the closing shift tonight.
The diner was closed until dinner tonight, Uncle was out of town and the crew that was set to work the lunch shift had to something else. We were currently the only ones in the diner. We walked back into the kitchen to start getting prepped, but North slammed his palm on the counter and stopped us in our tracks. "What the hell Gabe! Are you going to ask her out or not?"
Gabe threw his hands up in the air but then bunched them into fists down at his side.
"Shut up North! I am trying to romance her! Don't rush me."
"Well hurry the fuck up, the rest of us want a chance too."
I didn't think now was a good time to mention that I already got my chance, and my date was already set for this weekend. I didn't know what Gabe was up to, but I knew he was excited about his plan with Sang.
"O, ok. Let me see what I can do." He started to dig around in his pockets, I thought he was looking for his phone. Was he just going to text her now? "O, here we go. I have a fuck off, a fuck you and a whole bunch of fuckery for everyfuckingone. I am doing it my way, and there is nothing you can do about it North." And with that he practically stomped out into the dining room.
I couldn't hold my laugh in. I am used to Gabe's creative swearing, but that was pretty good.
"Shut up Luke!" I had just enough time to duck as a ladle swung past my head.
"O come on North. We all knew Gabe was going to do something different. There is only so long he can go without actually asking her, I am sure you will get your turn soon."
He growled at me and moved off into the walk in fridge to take stock of what we have to still do. Now would probably be a good time for me to help Gabe in the dining room, or at least anywhere but the kitchen.
