A/N: Thanks to Kit-cat99, ebonywarrior85 and Dani for reviewing the last chapter.
Dean knew he had a bigger problem than he had thought when he woke up next to a hot vampiress after a long satisfying night of wild primal sex, and he immediately thought of Avery.
He had been able to successfully get her out of his head for a few hours, she hadn't even crossed his mind once throughout the entire night. But now she was back again, like a demon from the past, still haunting him.
He sighed and propped himself up on one elbow, letting his gaze roam over Lily's delicious naked back before leaning in to nuzzle her neck.
"Can I see you again?" He breathed into her ear. She seemed to be the remedy for his tormenting reality for a while and he also didn't want to let another opportunity to have mind-blowing vampire sex pass. He wasn't too crazy about sex with humans at the moment.
Lily rolled over onto her back with a smile, opening her eyes and lifting one hand to run her fingers through his hair. "Of course, baby."
"Maybe next time, I'll buy you breakfast." He joked, making her chuckle.
Dean got out of bed and she watched him get dressed to relish in his perfect body and beauty one last time. She really hoped he would go out and find her again when he wanted sex.
Dean didn't bother asking for her number though, he would sense her in the neighbourhood.
"See you around." He gave her his most seductive smile and playfully smacked her ass. Lily giggled and covered herself up. "I hope so, mister."
When he had disappeared out the door, she cuddled into the pillows and went back to sleep.
Dean got in the Impala and drove to the one person whose presence always helped him ease his mind and make him feel better.
Sam opened the front door to find his big brother standing on the porch and giving him a bright smile.
"Hiya Sammy – wow, you look like crap." He stated, his grin faded when his eyes fell on his baby brother.
Sam sighed and glared at him, but stepped aside to let Dean in. "Thanks, have you looked in the mirror lately?" He added dryly.
Dean chuckled, but didn't say anything. He knew exactly how bad he looked.
He had been going to bars and drinking excessively, more than usual, to wipe out the sex dreams. All the effort hadn't been worth it. Avery didn't seem to leave his fucking mind. Taking the vampiress home to fuck her and his own brains out had finally brought him salvation for a fleeting moment that past night. He hadn't had any sleep ever since Avery stepped into his life, and he was far from being alright.
But judging by Sammy's appearance, his little brother was doing a whole lot worse. Dean looked around the quiet, liveless house; it wasn't the good kind of calm, the atmosphere was oppressive.
"Hey... is everything alright... in here?" He asked carefully, following his brother into the living room. Sam's shoulders tensed at the words and Dean didn't need to see his face to know how bad it was. He sat down on the couch, looking at his brother intently.
As a reaction to his staring, Sam fled quietly into the kitchen. Fetching some beers, he took the opportunity to gather his thoughts and decide whether to tell Dean about his problems or not. His brother didn't have a mate and couldn't possibly understand what he was going through. But Dean was the only person he trusted unconditionally, besides Jamie. If he didn't share his pain, he would explode. He needed to confide in his brother.
Sam opened the beers and returned to the living room where Dean was waiting for him patiently. He handed him one bottle and took a seat across from him. For a few minutes they just sat in silence and drank their beers.
"It's over." Sam's barely audible voice sounded through the room. He looked down at the label on his bottle, not bearing to see his brother's reaction.
"What?" Dean almost choked on his drink.
"Jamie and I..." Sam trailed off, shaking his head. It was so hard to say it aloud, but he forced himself to get the words out. "It's not working anymore... she doesn't want me."
"No, Sammy, stop it." Dean said weakly, beginning to panic. "You and Jamie, you guys are perfect together. It's probably just a... phase or something..."
"She claims that we shouldn't have gotten together in the first place." Sam stated quietly, letting out a defeated sigh. "Maybe... maybe it'll be for the best to let her go... if that's what she wants."
"No, that's not true." Dean protested vehemently, running a hand through his hair. "It's my fault. She's probably still upset because of what I said..."
Sam looked up and saw his own pain mirrored in Dean's eyes.
"It's no one's fault, Dean." He hurried to appease him. It hurt him to see his brother blaming himself for his and Jamie's problems. "Jamie and I... we've always had our issues. I don't wanna lose her, but I'm just tired of fighting for this relationship. I've been fighting for her love for a whole century now... I can't do it anymore..."
"Hey, you can't just give up. Don't let her go. Not ever. You can't cut the bond with your mate, no matter what." Dean insisted, leaning a little forward on the couch.
Sam looked at his brother in surprise, a small smile tugging at the corner of his mouth. "Dean, you never believed in this mate thing."
"Yeah, and I still don't give a shit about that, but this is you and Jamie."
"I don't know what to do, it's all too complicated, and something happened the other day... it really upset her... " Sam trailed off, hesitating.
Dean perked up, curiosity sparking inside him. "What do you mean?"
Sam took a deep breath and started to describe his experience at the office a few nights back.
Driving back to his own place, Dean didn't make it very far and was forced to stop halfway in a quiet neighbourhood. He parked the Impala in the parking lot of an apartment building to figure out what was happening to him.
Avery's aura hit his senses as soon as he climbed out of the car, the air was laced with her scent... or maybe it was just his imagination. He had lost his mind and was hallucinating.
His instincts told him that something wasn't right though, she was in trouble again.
He walked down the sidewalk, knowing she had to be close-by, he could feel it. With every step he took, her scent intensified until he could locate it, and Dean sprinted into the next alley.
And there she was, tripping over her own feet. She stumbled and fell into his arms.
"Avery!" He shouted alarmed, grabbing her arms and forcing her to look at him. He could tell she was disoriented and he searched her face in panic for any clues as to what had happened.
"Keep it together, girl. I told you how to fight it!" He spat, fear and worry making his voice sound even gruffer. "Your self-control sucks, princess. You think I'll always be around to help you whenever you're dealing with bloodlust, huh?"
Despite his words, Dean pulled her to his chest and wrapped his arms around her. To his surprise Avery boxed him in the ribs, causing him to loosen his hold.
"Shut up, you idiot!" She took a step back, shooting him a dirty look. "I'm perfectly fine... I just need to kill him, okay?"
All the blood drained from Dean's face, his eyes widened in shock at the pure hatred in her tone.
Avery's gaze drifted to the street and now that she wasn't as dazed, she realized that she hadn't gotten as far away from Joshua as she had thought.
"I need to get back to the diner..." She mumbled and started to move as if she were in some kind of trance.
"What?" Dean snapped into action, grabbing her arm roughly and yanking her back. "What diner? Get back here, your sweet ass is not going anywhere!"
"Don't touch me, Winchester!" She seethed and tried to push him away, but Dean wouldn't let go of her. "You don't understand, okay? I need to... I have to kill him, he's right there, only a few blocks away!"
Dean saw that her eyes were glazed over, he could feel her skin burning with anger under his touch. He pieced together all her words, realizing that something, or rather someone, had triggered the lust to spill blood. "Don't give up now, baby. You've been doing great so far, c'mon, you have to calm down. You can do it. Tell me what happened."
"Nothing happened. I just wanna hurt him. I wanna make him feel the same pain I had to go through, don't you get it?!" She exclaimed in desperation, close to tears.
Dean swallowed hard, feeling an ache in his chest. The misery she felt started to affect him. "Yes, I do. But this is not a solution. You can't go around killing people, just because you've got the ability to." His voice was hoarse when he added softly, "Who hurt you, baby?"
"Josh... I saw him there... and wanted to rip his fucking heart out... he's... he's my boyfriend... my... ex..." Avery mumbled weakly, staring off into distance.
"He's just an ex." Dean let out an annoyed sigh. "So what? It didn't work out, you guys broke up, big deal! Now you wanna kill every guy you fucked?"
"He's not just some ex!" Avery yelled at him. Dean's words pissed her off instead of calming her. "I love him. He's been sneaking around behind my back, lying to me and cheating on me. But I still love him... I thought he was the one, I wanted to marry him!"
Dean's jaw clenched as he gritted his teeth, biting back every comment. He wished she wouldn't have told him that, he didn't need to know.
"Get over it. You won't be walking down the aisle anytime soon, princess." He said harshly and almost regretted his insensitive words when a hint of hurt flickered in her eyes.
"You know what? You're a bigger jerk than Josh ever was." Avery flared up again. "What are you doing here? I never asked you to come to my rescue!"
"Guess what, next time I won't. Go out on a killing spree, see if I care. But I'm here now and I can't and won't allow you to go after the guy."
"Jesus Christ, Dean, don't get your panties in a twist." Avery shot back, feeling very exhausted all of a sudden. "It's over, I'm good now... I think."
"You are?" Dean asked skeptically.
She nodded and crossed her arms, looking up at him reluctantly. "Thanks to you, I guess."
Fighting with him had helped, the urge to kill she felt when she had spotted Josh at the diner was gone. Dean had distracted her by focusing her anger on him.
He couldn't believe how relieved he was that she seemed to be alright again. "You see, I can be very useful." Dean chuckled and stepped closer to her, taking her hand in his. Avery glanced down, suppressing a smile at the warm feeling of his touch.
"Yeah... but you were right, I should've staked you when I had the chance. You're freakin' annoying."
"Oh baby, you know how much I love dirty talk." He whispered and Avery looked up at him, seeing the concern in his eyes perfectly covered by a lighthearted smile. He honestly worried about her and tried to keep her from making a terrible and life-changing mistake with such determination as if he truly cared about her. He had come to help her as soon as he sensed her. It was adorable.
"C'mere." Avery simply said with a smile and leaned up to wrap her arms around his neck, rewarding him with a kiss.
Dean pulled her close, letting out a contented sigh when she melted into his embrace. He hadn't dared to dream he would be lucky enough to kiss her, to taste her sweet lips on his one last time.
When Avery's tongue brushed against his, she perceived a faint hint of warm blood in his mouth. It was female vampire blood directly from the vein. Everything clicked into place. Dean had been with someone not that long ago, a few hours maybe.
Startled, she pulled away, hoping her thoughts weren't too obvious. "Dean... I think I should go..."
"What's wrong?" He asked confused, his mind clouded from the heavenly kiss and Avery's fruity scent.
"Nothing, it's just... if we keep this up we both know where we'll end up. That's probably not such a good idea, right?"
Her words had the effect of a cold shower, in a matter of seconds he was sober and thinking clearly. He couldn't deny how disappointed he was, but he was also thankful for Avery's rationality. As much as he wanted to have sex with her, it shouldn't be happening again.
"You're right, princess." He said with a sad smile. "I'll get you home."
"No, I... kinda want to be alone, if you don't mind. I need to process what just happened..."
Dean was still oblivious as to what had caused her to back down and get away from him. Avery didn't dare bring it up, she was too scared, confused and intimidated.
He had fucked her exactly three times, but refused to drink her blood when she asked him to, when she practically begged him to bite her. But after the night with her, he had gone out and found some vampire chick and did everything Avery wanted him to do to her to some strange woman. What did it mean? What was wrong with her, why didn't he want her?
Dean frowned, waiting for her to add something, but she kept silent and gave him a brave smile. When she turned around and left the alley to head back home, Dean didn't try to stop her. He watched her go, too stumped to do anything.
But then he made a decision and returned to his car, started the engine and after locating her, he followed her right to her doorstep.
Dean parked his car across the street from her apartment building and stayed there unseen under a tree, the black Impala mingling with the darkness of the night. He saw Avery walk in, and a few seconds later the lights went on in her bedroom and illuminated the windows.
Dean scooted down in his seat, leaned his head back and closed his eyes, focusing on Avery's presence and fragrance. If he had to, he would stay there the entire night and keep an eye on her to make sure she was alright.
Avery closed the door behind her with a sigh, relieved to be alone with her thoughts. She walked through her little apartment and into her bedroom, turning on the lights in every room on her way. Her head was spinning, processing everything that had happened since the fateful Friday night. It didn't feel like she was getting her life back together, it was rather the opposite. Today had showed her that it was slipping away, she had no control over her own emotions.
Despite the warmth and light in her room, Avery felt the coldness down to her bones. There was a darkness inside of her that she had never been aware of, and would probably never be able to get rid of. She nearly killed someone today, someone she cared about and loved...
Her hands started to shake at the memory of the lust to kill spreading through. She shoved them in the front pockets of her jeans and forced herself to erase the image of Josh at the diner from her mind.
As if being drawn by an invisible force, her gaze drifted to the window. A cold shiver ran down her spine. She could feel eyes on her. Someone was watching her.
Her senses were sharp and more perceptive than ever before, she could rely on that dark animalistic side of her being. She moved slowly over to the window and pulled the curtain a little aside.
It was pitch black outside, Avery couldn't make out anyone. She squinted her eyes when she noticed the black car under a tree right across the street. Of course, as stubborn as he was, he had followed her. She leaned her head against the cool surface of the window and closed her eyes, not knowing whether she should cry or laugh.
It took her only a few seconds to figure out what she had to do. Turning around, she left the room and rushed outside to run to him.
Dean was lost in Avery's presence. Blinding out the surroundings and focusing his senses only on her, had a surprising effect. He could vaguely feel and smell the soft leather of the seat beneath him as he was completely wrapped up in her. He had never felt this calm and relaxed before, her proximity was so goddamn soothing.
He didn't expect her to appear out of nowhere. His eyes snapped open and he jumped when Avery knocked on the window of his car.
"Hey there, stalker." She said with a smile, climbing in next to him. He grinned at her, his eyes automatically scanning her body.
Avery shifted nervously in her seat, folded her hands in her lap and turned to look at him. "Dean, listen... we need to talk."
"Huh," Dean simply replied, pursing his lips at her serious tone. He knew why she wanted to talk to him and he didn't like it. "I don't think so."
A wicked grin spread across his face and he scooted closer to her over the bench seat, a dangerous twinkle in his eyes as he placed his arm on the headrest behind her.
Avery leaned farther away from him, glancing at his arm before her eyes darted to his face. She licked her lips nervously. "Dean, I'm serious... we never really talked about the whole... situation..."
She interrupted herself when his hand danced lightly up her thigh. She was wearing jeans, yet the touch of his fingertips sent an electric shock through her.
"Go on, I'm listening." Dean said nonchalantly and inched even closer until she was cornered in between the door and his hot strong body pressing into her.
Avery let out a frustrated groan, making Dean chuckle. She knew he wanted to distract her, but she was determined to make him listen. If he wanted to play games with her then she would play along.
"Dean, I know you regret sleeping with me, it complicated everything for you..." She gasped and bit her bottom lip, trying to stay strong when Dean started to kiss up her neck and his hand suddenly cupped her through her jeans. "I... uhm, I'm a vampire now and... and I understand that you don't want to look after me all the time and... uh, oh God..."
He had unzipped her pants and pushed his hand into her panties, rubbing over her wet heat.
"I've already fucked you on the hood of my car, now let me fuck you right here, in the front seat." He growled into her ear and chuckled darkly at the moan slipping past her lips, thinking it meant her surrender.
"But you were right, you know? When you said... uh, we... uh, we shouldn't be doing this, you turned me and... uh, we need to stay away from each other..." Avery tried again, but couldn't hold back the deep moan that escaped her in the next moment.
"Well, what can I say? I'm an ass." Dean parted her slick folds and ran his fingers teasingly over her slit without pushing into her and nibbled at her pulse point, scraping his fangs over the sensitive spot below her ear, but never penetrating the soft skin to drink from her.
Avery jumped in his arms, her heart clenched underneath her ribcage in anticipation of his bite, though she knew he was teasing her and would never actually feed on her.
"Let me fuck you like I know you want me to, let me enjoy you a few more times before we part ways, Avery." Dean breathed against her skin, his low gruff voice sending a shiver down her spine.
Avery cupped his face to make him look at her and nodded. "Okay." She uttered breathlessly and clashed her lips to his before he could say anything. Dean wrapped his arm tightly around her and pressed her to his chest, chuckling triumphantly into the kiss. He pushed his tongue past her lips and she deepened the kiss with a greedy moan, letting her tongue meet his and burying her hands in his hair. Avery forgot what she had wanted to say to him, it was something important, but had slipped to the back of her mind in that moment.
Dean's fingers stopped tormenting her entrance and moved up to play with her clit, pressing down firmly and drawing tight, fast cricles to bring her to climax. Avery cried out, starting to moan uncontrollably as he worked her into a frenzy. She was close, spark after spark ignited in her lower body and she was about to peak.
But the door handle digging into her back reminded her that she was in the Impala. That Dean was toying with her, cruel enough to make her think he would drink from her but never intending to do so. He didn't like her, wasn't even willing to her hear out, constantly keeping her at arms length, but took advantage of her attraction to him to make her stay when she wanted to push him away. He was a jackass and she didn't deserve to be treated that way.
But the sensations running through her felt so damn good and it took every ounce of strength inside her to shake off the haze and grab Dean's wrist to stop him.
"No." She choked out, tightening her hold to make it clear how serious she was. "No, Dean. Stop."
He pulled his hand away as soon as the word slipped past her lips and Avery breathed out a shaky sigh, sitting up a little. Her body was still tingling from the oncoming orgasm.
Dean frowned, looking at her in concern. "I'm sorry, Avery. Is everything okay? Did I do something wrong?" He would never force her into anything she didn't want to do.
Avery gave him a little smile. "It's not fair, Dean. I want this, I want this so much, but... I don't wanna be just your toy, I won't let you use me."
"Avery..." Dean sighed, sensing what she was about to say. "I'm just as confused as you are... I don't know how to explain it, but - "
"That's what I'm trying to tell you, Dean." Avery interrupted him, placing her hand on top of his. "We've got a problem. I have this need to be close to you, because you turned me. Now, don't get me wrong, I enjoyed the sex with you, but you're still an ass... and I need to be on my own to learn to live as a vampire and time to think, find out what I want..."
"It's dangerous out there." Dean objected and she sighed heavily. "Yeah, but I'll manage. You don't want me in your life, Dean, and that's okay. But I don't want you to come to me out of guilt. Or to have sex."
Dean nodded, not sure how to feel about her decision. A part of him was fucking glad that she wanted to be left alone, yet another part feared to give her up so soon.
"So... this is it? You want me to back off?"
"Yeah, I guess so. Stay away from me, Dean. I don't want to see you unless... I don't know, you wanna be friends..."
Dean thought about her words for a moment, feeling a hint of relief surge through him. She didn't want him to be her mate. He was off the hook. It was a damn good feeling. His life was slowly going back to normal.
He gave her an almost warm smile. "It was never my intention to hurt you, Avery, I swear. You're a good girl, and I'm sorry how it all turned out. No hard feelings?"
She smiled back at him. "No hard feelings. Don't worry, I understand... Goodbye, Dean. Have a nice life... or eternity."
"Goodbye, princess."
Avery grinned at the pet name. She leaned in and surprised him with a light kiss to his lips before turning around and getting out of the car.
"You can go, I'll be fine. No killing spree tonight."
Dean smirked and slid behind the wheel. Turning on the engine, he turned to look at her. "Listen, if you do happen to need help... don't hesitate to call, okay?" To his own surprise, he genuinely meant it.
Avery nodded and he saluted her before he maneuvered the car onto the street. He watched her in the rearview mirror with a smile, keeping his eyes on her silhouette until it disappeared out of his sight.
Her scent still lingered on him, his lips still tingled from her kiss.
Damn, he was gonna miss that girl, but at least those dreams would finally stop haunting him. He was free.
