Chapter 14

Sabrina had returned to work last week as planned and everything was actually going better than she had expected. Epiphany had been a godsend and had been finding ways to keep her and Patrick apart, giving her one less thing to worry about. She was so happy to be back at work and doing what she loved. She really had missed it over the last few months and after being back for a few hours it was like she had never left.

Exhausted after completing a difficult shift, Sabrina headed to the locker room to get her things so she could go home. Felix had promised a night of takeout and wine and after the day she just had, she was really looking forward to it. Sabrina closed her locker and headed towards the door. Distracted reading a text from Michael telling her to enjoy her night with Felix, Sabrina almost walked right into Patrick when he walked into the locker room.

"I'm sorry," Sabrina said looking up from her phone with a smile on her face to notice Patrick. Her smile quickly faded when she realized who she had almost walked into.

"Sabrina, hi."

"Hi Patrick."

"How has your first week gone? I haven't seen you at all." Patrick said heading over to his locker.

"It's been good. I'm really glad to be back."

"Good, I'm glad to hear it is going well for you."

"Thanks. Well, it was good to see you. Have a good night," Sabrina said as she turned to leave.

"Sabrina, wait!" Patrick called after her before she could leave. He hated that she was rushing to get away from him. "I'm actually glad I ran into you, I've wanted to talk to you all week."

"You have?" Sabrina asked surprised. "About what?"

"About tomorrow," Patrick said.

Tomorrow. The word kept playing over in Sabrina's head. Most people wouldn't have heard the sadness in Patrick's voice when he said the word, but Sabrina knew him well enough to pick up on it. "Tomorrow?" Sabrina asked.

"Yeah. I noticed you weren't on the schedule and well, I don't know what your plans were, but I was wondering if you might want to spend the day with Emma and me?"

Tomorrow. Sabrina still couldn't believe that tomorrow would have been her baby's first birthday. She had been talking about the best way to get through with it Dr. Collins, but she still wasn't sure there was a best way. How did a mother celebrate her baby's birthday without her baby? Sabrina had only planned on going to the cemetery and then to the chapel, but with Patrick's offer, thought that maybe spending the day with the two other people who loved and missed her son as much as she did would be the best way to honor her sweet Gabriel. "What did you have in mind?"

"We don't really have anything planned. I just thought it would be nice if the three of us spent the day together on Gabriel's birthday."

Hearing Patrick say their son's name out loud brought a tear to Sabrina's eye. He had moved on so quickly with Sam after they lost Gabriel, it was refreshing to know that Patrick hadn't forgotten their son. "I think that would be nice too," Sabrina said wiping her cheek.

"Really?" Patrick asked.

Sabrina nodded her head. "I'll meet you at your house in the morning?"

"Yes, that would be perfect."

"Okay, I'll see you then. Have a good night Patrick."

"You too, Sabrina."

….

Although Sabrina had enjoyed her night with Felix, she had been unable to get Patrick and Gabriel off her mind. After finally falling asleep after drinking more wine than she should have, she found herself deep in a dream, reliving the night of the accident. She stirred in her sleep, thinking about being at the traffic light when the baby started to kick. She could vividly see Patrick's smile filled with his excitement. It was at that moment that she saw a shift in Patrick and she knew he was going to be there for her and their son.

She stirred more as Patrick swerved to avoid the car that was coming directly towards them. She dreamed about Patrick helping her out of the car to lay on the ground. And Britt telling her that she was in labor. "NO!" Sabrina called out, as she woke up shaking. "No," she whispered to herself. She quickly realized that it had only been a dream, but it seemed so real. She felt like she was reliving that awful night all over again.

"Bri?" Felix said worried as he entered her bedroom after her scream woke him.

"I'm sorry for waking you," Sabrina said apologetically.

"You know you don't need to apologize. Did you dream about the accident again?" Felix asked, although it had been awhile, it was the only thing that gave Sabrina nightmares. Sabrina nodded her head as she wiped away her tears. Without another word, Felix sat on the bed next to Sabrina and wrapped his arms around her, easing her shaking.

"I miss him so much, Fe."

"I know. I know you do," Felix said wishing he could do more to help his friend.

"Thank you, Felix. You're more than I deserve."

"You know that's not true. Come on, lay down so you can try to get some sleep."

"I don't think I'll be able to," Sabrina said afraid to fall back asleep and relive that night all over again.

"Come on, I'll stay with you."

"Thank you Felix," Sabrina said grateful to have him in her life. She didn't know what she would do without him.
