Chapter 14
$%&%^%^&
It's been five days since they found Liam and Hayden, or rather Theo found them. Things were different, and Laci wasn't sure she liked it. Everyone was distant from each other. They were less like a pack and more like old friends who lost contact. It made her think of how the guys had lost contact with Isaac and Derek when they both left. It made her worry about the fact their senior year was just starting and in a few months they'd all be seperating too. Even she and Scott.
Melissa had offered for Isaac to stay with them again. He'd go back to sharing a room with Scott like before. He was currently at the school getting registered to attend his last year here in Beacon Hills. Laci knew she should have offered to go with him, but she didn't. She was with Stiles trying to figure out her dreams. Her dreams that hadn't stopped since that night. It was always the same dream. Scott, dead. Her mom trying to revive him.
"So, this started when? Did it ever happen before?" Stiles asked as he paced his room.
Lydia was coming over soon and he was already nervous about how that was going to go. He had already told her about Parrish, but now they needed to figure out where he was taking the bodies.
Laci was sitting on his bed, fiddling with the zipper to Isaac's sweatshirt. It was one of his old ones he had left behind. She wondered if he knew she had it. She lifted her head to meet his gaze. "No, it never happened before. I would have told you and Scott if it did." She said, a little insulted he'd think she'd keep this from them.
"Then why haven't you told Scott yet?"
"Why haven't you told him about Donovan?" She shot back, though immediately regretted it.
She knew it was a low blow, and she could see the pain on his face the second the words left her mouth. "Stiles, I'm so sorry." She tried to apologize, but he just shook his head.
He knew she was right. He knew the longer he kept this secret the worse it'll be when it comes to light. He was afraid of how everyone would look at him, how they'd react. Laci might understand, but that didn't mean Scott or his dad would. Especially with how his dad's been acting lately. "No, no. You're right." He said, clearing his throat as he dropped into his computer chair.
They sat in silence for a few minutes, neither knowing what to say. Awkwardness had fallen over them until Laci cleared her throat. "It started after I came back. What if Theo was right, Stiles? What if I'm a part of this? What if they did something to me when they brought me back?" She said, her worries getting the best of her.
Stiles shook his head, refusing to believe she was part of this. "No way. You're not one of the kids who have two sets of DNA like Hayden and Corey. We don't know why they brought you back, but you aren't showing any signs of being a chimera." He said, rising to his feet again to continue pacing around the room.
"But it's possible."
Stiles shot her a look. "No, it's not. It can't be."
Because if it was, that meant they might lose her again and none of them could handle that. Especially not him or Scott. She was their sister, Scott's twin, they couldn't go through that loss again. It broke them the first time. They were still healing from it.
Laci opened her mouth to say something when Lydia knocked on the door. Neither realized she was there or for how long. Stiles was hoping not for long. "Am I interrupting something?" She asked, looking between them curiously.
Stiles cleared his throat, shaking his head as he straightened his shirt. "No. We were just talking about . . . homework." He lied, hoping she wouldn't question it.
It was an obvious lie, but that seemed to be the on going trend lately. Lying.
If Lydia believed him or not, she didn't say. She just nodded and came into the room. They were going to find where the bodies were. "Well, I should be going. I told Isaac I'd meet him at the school." Laci said. She hesitated another second before gathering her stuff and getting up from the bed. She kissed Stiles cheek before slipping by Lydia on her way out with a quick goodbye.

Laci got to school before the end of second period. She didn't get a chance to check in on Isaac and see how his first period went, but she knew she'd see him at some point. She had math second period and had just made it in time. She slipped into her seat beside Malia after apologizing for being late to the teacher.
Math was neither of their favorite subjects, and it was probably the only thing they had in common. Once she was settled and the teacher continued on with the lesson, she glanced over to Malia. "What did I miss?" She whispered.
Malia's head snapped up, yellow highlighter stuck between her teeth. With a quick look over, she saw Malia was highlighting most of her notes with red. She'd seen that color trick before with Stiles' board in his room. She smiled weakly, that was oddly sweet. "We just went over the homework. It still doesn't make any sense to me." She whispered back, scratching her head as she tried to make sense of what was being written on the board.
Laci tried to cover her chuckle, earning a glare from the teacher. She'd already disrupted the class once, she was pushing her luck at this point. Laci tried to pay attention, but it was only a few minutes before Malia nudged her. "Can we really trust Isaac? Theo's right, he just came out of nowhere." She whispered, her eyes darting between Laci and the board.
She wasn't expecting that question.
A spark of anger hit her. Isaac had done nothing but help them since he got back to town. He saved her from burning in Stiles' jeep, and he helped them look for Liam and Hayden. Even after all this time, she still felt the need to defend Isaac. "You can trust him. I trust him, Scott trusts him. That should be good enough." She whispered back, sending her a look.
"And if it's not?"
Laci tensed up, not knowing how to answer that. She chose to ignore the comment and focus on the class going on. Malia studied her for a moment before leaning over again. "You and he use to date, right? Stiles said you two have history. What if he's using that against you and Scott and he's really working with the doctors? He's been gone for a year, Laci. No word, no contact. You don't know what he's been up to." She said, explaining what Theo had said to her earlier.
While Malia had a right to question Isaac, it didn't make it any easier for Laci. She was right. Isaac has been gone for a year with no contact with Scott or Stiles. Malia didn't know Isaac like she knew him though. It didn't matter how much time went by, he was still the guy she knew. "Isaac is a good guy. He's not helping those doctors." She snapped quietly.
Malia didn't seem phased by her snapping. "Even if it meant they brought you back?"
Laci's eyes widened surprised at the question. She hadn't expected that, nor did she have an answer for it.

After class, Laci headed to her locker. She was still fuming after Malia's questioning. She just wasn't sure if it was because she could be right. If Isaac found a way to bring her back, even if it meant working for those monsters, would he do it? She wanted to say no, he'd do the right thing even if it hurt more. She knew even Scott would have a hard time with that choice.
"Hey, Lace." Isaac said, coming up to her.
She jumped, startled by his voice. She hadn't expected to see him until later. She shouldn't let Malia's accusasion get to her. Isaac was still the guy she knew. He knew right from wrong. She could trust him. She was just letting Malia get into her head.
Turning, she gave him a weak smile as she shuffled books into her locker. "Oh, um, hey. How'd this morning go?"
He shrugged, stuffing his hands into his pockets. "As expected."
She grabbed another couple of books before shutting her locker. She started heading to her next class, Isaac falling in step with her. The two walked in silence for a few minutes before Isaac got the feeling there was something going on. "Alright, what's with the silence? You're not usually this quiet." He said, geniunely concerned about her.
He already thought something was wrong with her, all she needed was him to think something else was wrong. She didn't even know for sure something was. "Can I ask you something?"
"Of course."
Laci hesitated, feeling silly for even needing to ask. Malia was just getting in her head and she was letting her. She trusted Isaac. Isaac was the first boy she loved. She shouldn't have a doubt in her mind about him. "If you had found a way to bring me back, but it involved working for some pretty messed up people, would you still do it?" She came out and just asked it.
Isaac looked taken back by the question. He was clearly just as surprised by the question as she had been when Malia asked her. He actually seemed to think about it though. Laci watched him, curious to hear what he had to say. "What's this really about, Lace? What's going on?' He asked instead.
"Just something Malia asked me last period. Theo's got it in her head they can't trust you no matter what Scott or I say." She said, shifting around her books in her arms.
Isaac's eyes flashed with hurt that she'd doubt him. "You know I wouldn't be working with them. I didn't even know what was going on a week ago."
Laci felt guilty. She knew he was innocent. He was their friend and had been for a long time. He's helped them with a lot in the past years and had been there when they needed him. He stepped up when Erica and Boyd ran. He chose her when she asked him to. The least she could do was not doubt his intentions. "I'm sorry. She just got in my head. The question threw me." She apologized, hoping they could forget she ever asked it.
He was about to say something when he suddenly stopped, grabbing her wrist as he listened to something she couldn't hear. "What is it?"
"An ambulance. Something's wrong." He said, glancing back in the direction it was coming from.
Laci looked worried, hoping it wasn't anyone she knew. There was a chance it could not be related to the chimeras and the dread doctors. Then again, what are the chances it was? Pretty high after the week they've had. With that thought, Laci grabbed Isaac's hand and the two hurried down the hallway to see what happened.
As they reached the outside, they saw a big group of kids all standing around to see what had happened. She couldn't see what was happening, but she knew Isaac could. The perks of not only being a werewolf, but being so tall. "It reeks of mercury." Isaac whispered over to her, confirming what they both knew. Another Chimera had become a failure. Now it was just the matter of was it Hayden or Corey.
Scott and Theo came out behind them. Laci turned her head when she heard them. "It's one of the chimeras."
Scott nodded and made his way through the crowd and found Mason covered in Mercury and blood. He looked like he was in shock still. "He just started bleeding everywhere, I don't . . ."
"Don't let them do it." Corey choked out from the stretcher as they loaded him into the back of the ambulance. "Don't let them kill me!"
Laci squeezed Isaac's hand, fear running through her as she watched them shut the doors. She couldn't imagine how scared Corey had to be right now. Isaac glanced at their hands before looking at her. He hesitated before squeezing back, letting her know he was there for her. Theo turned to Scott. "Scott, we have to follow them. We gotta protect him, right?" He said, but Scott didn't seem to hear him. "Scott come on." He tried again. Scott was zoned in on the ambulance as it left though.
"Scott?" Laci asked, reaching over to touch his arm.
Still nothing.
Theo knew Scott wasn't feeling confident about his powers and having to use his inhaler again, but this was about someone's life and if they could save it. "Scott, this is what you do." Theo tried again, hoping to snap him out of it.
It did. He nodded before the two took off for his car. Laci and Isaac stayed behind with Mason as everyone else went to return to their classes. Laci felt pity as she looked over to see Mason just standing there. He didn't know what to do and he was still covered in Corey's blood. "Mason, why don't you go down and shower. Scott's got an extra shirt you can borrow in his locker." She said, touching his arm to get his attention.
Mason looked like he was in a daze before blinking out of it. He nodded his head, not trusting his voice not to crack. None of this felt real. Only a few minutes ago he and Corey were joking around and testing out his strength. He jumped when Laci touched his arm. "I'm okay, really. I'm more worried about Corey making it to the hospital." He said, glancing between the two of them.
Laci gave him a sad smile before nodding in understanding. "Scott will keep him safe."
With that Laci lead the way down to the locker room. She and Isaac waited outside while Mason took a shower. It was like an awkward silence had fallen over them. Laci wanted to apologize for not trusting him for that split second. Who was she to judge him anyway? It wasn't like she was being completely honest with him or Scott for that matter. Only Stiles knew about her newfound powers, and they didn't know what it meant.
The sight of all that blood made her stomach churn. What if she was just another failure waiting to be next to fail? Everyone was so worried about Hayden and Corey, she didn't want to add to their plates. Stiles only knew because he was there when it happened.
"What's going on in that head of yours?" Isaac asked over, breaking the silence.
Her inital reaction was to lie. She didn't want him to know the truth. She didn't want him to worry about her. He already had to go through her death once. He didn't deserve to be put through that again. So, another lie it was. "Oh, uh, just thinking about Corey. I hope Scott and Theo get there in time." She said, hoping he bought the lie.
He didn't seem to believe her at first. She could see the doubt in his eyes. She almost wanted him to call her on it. She wanted to be caught in her lie. There were so many lies going around lately, no one seemed to know when to stop. This wasn't the same pack from two years ago, she realized. They were broken and struggling to find their way back.
Isaac didn't call her on her lie.
