We're finally here at the last character chapter! This is something I have been looking forward to. Let's not waste time!
Ruby was holding a plate of cookies and weapons. Ruby was smiling, but was cut off by a whistle, "Cut!"
Ruby looked confused, "Something wrong?"
"We just got the new script! Your not allowed to share your interest!" A completely blank thing in the shape of a person was reading a script.
Two bald men in black suits grabbed her plate and took it away. Ruby went teary eyed and turned to Qrow, "Back to questioning the trust I have in you for what you did."
"Actually, no. You're now going to blindly accept it and pretend you were not just used by your own family."
Ruby took out Crescent Rose and slashed a camera in half, "Too investing!"
Ruby growled and put on a smile, "Also, we're going to hype you dying. Don't worry, it's more than likely we're not going to go through with it. And if we do, you'll be resurrected and it will be an excuse to shut up people who want to see Summer."
Ruby turned to nobody in particular and held her hands out, "This is what I have to deal with."
"Finally, we're cutting out more of your screen time for the other characters. You're basically promotional fodder now."
Ruby facepalmed and started sobbing, "Too investing! What did we just rucking say?!"
And that's that!
Ruby Rose huh? I guess that I should start off with a positive . She is the most likeable character….by default of most of the other characters being massive piles of crap. She actually does have a good design and has a cool weapon.
So, why is she on the hit list? Because she is a prime example of anime protagonist archetype for these kinds fo show. She's a social outcast even though she would actually get by on her looks alone. She's statistically the most approachable character you could make.
She starts out decently enough. They establish her taste and interest, but, immediately after the first few episodes, they are forgotten about and don't even get brought up in filler or whatever. She can have any quirky trait, but won't even be seen or explored.
You wanna know why we don't see much of her personal self? Because she has less than half the screen time of most other characters. My count was at least half of Yang's, but that depends on what you consider screen time. If we talk about her doing nothing in the background (Spoilers, but that's most of it.), she has just as much as the other characters. Judge it by how much she actually does something, she has less than half of the others.
I made this clear in the parody, but she's just trailer fodder. She is a minion from Despicable Me basically. Having an actually good design that grabs your interest and barely doing more than making weird and stupid jokes in a few scenes. For the minions, it kinda worked since they were made to be background characters. (I actually hate the minions.) But Ruby is supposed to be the main character. Not A main character, THE main character. Imagine if more famous shows did that. It'd be weird, wouldn't it?
Time for one of the biggest traces of evidence there is no care for her character. She is a large time yes man, at least she becomes one in the later seasons. A yes man is a character with no ability to question another character in a higher authority or one similar to their own. This kind of character type is usually for henchmen and soldiers. (Or the minions, if you want to go back to that analogy.) Making a main character a yes man is one of the largest possible rookie mistakes a writer could make. If every character just follows the leader, or doesn't at least question it, there would basically be no real internal protagonist or antagonist tension. I'm not saying make all the characters at each other's throats, but give the air that it's more than blind faith or stupidity. Show me that there's more to Ruby listening to Qrow or Ozpin than blind faith or stupidity. Imagine if other stories did that.
Toriel: My child, I cannot let you leave.
Frisk: Okay.
(Monsters stay trapped underground for god knows how many more years.)
Old Bruce: I want my suit back!
Terry: Fine.
(Powers succeeds in delivering his chemical weapons.)
Iron Man: I don't want you going after these guys.
Spider Man: Alright.
(FBI catches Vulture's gang and the story ends.)
What? Didn't say it's always a good thing for someone to go against a superior. Basic point is that not blindly following along can lead to better conflict and character interactions.
The best thing you can say about Ruby is that a slice of life anime about her routine alone would be much more engaging and interesting than the actual show.
There is also the news that they plan to kill off Ruby. Suuuuure. Just like Optimus, Goku, Baymax, Sonic, every single comic book character ever made, and so many more. They're more than likely gonna place her near death and have her healed or kill her and revive her next season. She's going to be chillin with Summer and wants to leave the living world or return to it. The absolute worst thing they can do is have it look like she died, but she didn't really. I loathed the fake out death trope and (Spoilers.) it's gonna be high on my top ten worst tropes list.
Ruby is pretty much just the protagonist and nothing else now. I repeat. Nothing about Ruby is unique to Ruby. Name one aspect of her personality that you can't find in another protagonist. She's pretty much diet coke.
I honestly feel sad, because I wanted Ruby to be a good protagonist. I want her to not be a generic placeholder. I guess she might approve in later seasons, (I don't really plan to watch future seasons, but if people tell me it's an improvement I'll watch 'em.) but that's not likely.
Next up is the fanbase! I hope to see you lot there! (Shoots himself with a cannon.)
