Yes, I am alive! I am so sorry for not updating sooner, but life gets in the way. When you have sickness, family problems, and writers block all at once, it's really hard to find time to update. I hope you understand. Again, I'm incredibly sorry for the long wait.
This story is almost over (only a few more chapters). I have a few ideas for a sequel, maybe even a prequel. If I get enough interest, I'll explain a bit more. Just let me know what you think!
Disclaimer: I do not own Tangled or Frozen.
Dylan had always been good at sensing changes in temperature. It was a part of his powers. That was why, when Elsa left a trail of freezing cold air behind her, Dylan knew she was in trouble.
He silently slipped away from the group and followed the trail. It led to a storage room that they hadn't had any use for. He could hear sobbing inside. He knocked.
"Anna, now is not the time!" A muffled voice said.
"It's not Anna, Your Highness." Dylan called. "It's Dylan, the guard you met a few moments ago."
There was a pause. Oh. Well, if you don't mind, I would like to be left alone for a while."
Dylan placed his hand on the door. It was freezing. "Elsa, please, let me in. I can help." He said urgently.
"What?! Bring my parents back?" she cried.
Dylan lowered his voice. "No. I can help you with your powers."
At those words, the door burst open with a gust of wind. Dylan ran inside and shut the door before anyone could see.
He scanned his surroundings. The room had it's own blizzard. There was snow covering the floor, the wind was bowing hard, and there was ice covering the walls. Elsa was sitting against the wall, hugging her knees to her chest. She was sobbing, and had her eyes shut tightly.
The temperature and snow didn't bother Dylan. He ran up and knelt down in front of her. He tried to reach out, but she scooted further into the wall. "Don't touch me!" she exclaimed. "I don't want to hurt you!"
Dylan shook his head. "You won't. I promise."
"How do you know?! How did you find out about my powers anyway?!" she cried. She covered her face with her hands, trying to wipe away the tears that wouldn't stop coming.
Dylan could practically feel the fear coming off of her. He pulled her hands away from her face and looked her in the eye. "Because I have them too."
Elsa caught her breath and stopped sobbing. "What?"
"If you can calm down a bit, I can show you what I mean." Dylan asked gently.
Elsa closed her eyes and took a few deep breaths. Dylan could hear her mumbling under her breath, "Conceal... Don't feel... don't let it show...". over and over again until the wind died down, but it was still snowing.
She had opened her eyes and looked at Dylan expectantly. He gave a small smile and opened his hand. When the snowflake appeared, Elsa looked at him with wide eyes. "I'm not the only one..." she whispered.
"No, your not." Dylan said softly. "and I know what your feeling."
Elsa looked down. "I doubt that."
"Really?" Dylan raised an eyebrow. "Your feeling scared. For many reasons. When you learned about your parents, you felt terrified. Like you had lost your one and only anchor in life and now you were drowning. When your powers acted up, you ran, in fear of hurting someone. Now, you wonder if the fear is ever going to stop. Am I right?"
Elsa didn't answer. Dylan took that as a yes and kept going. "I was an orphan. I grew up scared of myself, so I shut people out. But then I met someone who could help."
Elsa looked up. "You were able to control it?"
Dylan smiled halfheartedly. "Not exactly. There were many times where I almost lost control. There were a few times that I did. Luckily no one was around. However, just having a friend helped. I had someone to talk to when things got bad. It was nice, but-"
"They never truly understood." Elsa finished.
Dylan nodded. "Exactly." There was a moment of silence until Elsa spoke up again.
"I had someone like that." She said. "It was my father. He never really understood, but he tried to help. He did for a while, but now that he's gone..." She broke into sobs again. The wind picked up.
Not really sure what to do, Dylan awkwardly wrapped his arms around her. Elsa buried her head in his shoulder and sobbed until it felt like no more tears would come.
"What am I going to do?" she whispered.
Honestly, Dylan didn't know the answer to her question, but he gave it his best shot.
"Elsa..." he began. "I'm not going to say that everything will go back to normal, because it won't. Things are going to change. But..." He released her so he could look her in the eye. "You have people who want to help you. And if you let them in, they will."
Elsa sniffled and looked down. "I'm not very good at letting people in."
Dylan placed a finger under her chin and pushed up so she was looking at him again. "Then I am going to help you."
"You will? W-why would you do that?" Elsa asked.
"Because you are the first person like me I have ever met. I will do everything I can to help you. And I promised your cousin I would." Dylan said. "But don't think that I'm being forced, because I honestly want to do this."
Elsa's eyes widened. "Wait, Rapunzel knows?! Sh-she can't! She-"
Dylan interrupted her. "She knows better not to tell anybody. She didn't with me."
Elsa nodded. "Thank you!" She flung her arms around his neck.
Dylan smiled. "Your welcome, Elsa."
When she pulled back, blue met blue. They held each other's gaze for a few seconds. Before he was aware of his actions, Dylan leaned forward slightly. Then he realized what he was doing and stopped, a slight blush coloring his cheeks.
Elsa looked down, blushing as well. "Um, I think we should go find the others."
Dylan cleared his throat. "Yeah. Let's go."
The Queen had led a sobbing Anna to the dining room, where she ordered Martha to get the princess a cup of hot chocolate. Everyone sat around the table, no one wanting to speak first. For once, Anna was grateful for the silence. She had time to think.
Anna had been looking forward to this trip ever since she found out about it. She had always wanted to meet her cousin, and now that Rapunzel had returned, she could! She was excited, but a little nervous, but she had been glad to have her parents as a guide. Well, that didn't go as planned.
Now that Anna's parents were gone, she didn't know what she was going to do! Things would be easier if Elsa would actually talk to her, but she knew that would never happen. Elsa may not know it yet, but Anna needs her big sister. Now more than ever.
Speaking of Elsa, her and Dylan had walked through the door at that moment. They took in the tense atmosphere and sat next to each other. Of course, Elsa sat as far from Anna as possible, but not before sending a fleeting look her way. Was that guilt? Anna shook it off. She was probably just seeing things. Martha brought out another cup of hot chocolate for Elsa.
"Thank you, ma'am." she mumbled.
Martha smiled sympathetically. "Your welcome, dear." She went back to the kitchen.
Little did Anna know, that she had saw correctly when her sister entered the room. Elsa was feeling guilty for ignoring her sister for all those years, and knew that she should do something about it. She just didn't know what. Her fear had always been hurting her sister, but know that she had Dylan, maybe things could change.
Dylan. Did he try to kiss her, or was she imagining things? She decided that she wouldn't mind if he was, with his perfect hair, and that hypnotizing, mischievous smile, and-
'Whoa. Slow down.' She thought. 'You just met him!'
But then there was the fact that he has her powers, so it could work...
'No!' Elsa scolded herself. 'It's pointless. You're just creating false hope. Besides, your parents just died! You shouldn't be thinking about this right now!'
Elsa came back to the present and took a sip of her hot chocolate. She noticed the awkward atmosphere. She looked over at Anna, expecting her to say something, but instead, her sister was looking down, taking deep breaths.
Elsa decided to play the role of Big Sister and cleared her throat. "Um, can to show us to our rooms?
The Queen nodded. "Of course. But there was only one room prepared. Is that okay?"
Elsa heard her sister sigh. She snuck a glance at Dylan, who smiled encouragingly. She made up her mind.
"That's fine."
Anna looked at her in shock, then smiled. "That's perfect."
The Queen smiled slightly and stood up. "This way, girls."
On their way to the bedroom, Anna wondered about her sister's motives for staying in the same room. Every chance that she got, Elsa would stay away from her. She had used any excuse that she could! But now... what had changed her mind?
'Maybe she just realizes that its important to be with family at a time like this.' Said that nagging voice in the back of her mind. 'Don't get ahead of yourself.'
At that moment, they arrived at the room. The Queen opened a door to reveal one of the nicer guest bedrooms, with two queen-sized beds.
"I had some of the staff bring up your luggage." The Queen said. "You can put your dresses in the Wardrobes for your stay here."
"How long will we be staying?" Anna asked.
The Queen smiled sadly. "We're not sure yet, sweetie. I guess... until we can get things sorted out. That might take a while, so make yourselves comfortable." With that, she left.
Anna and Elsa stood there in awkward silence. Elsa broke it by claiming the bed closest to the wall, leaving Anna the one by the window. The girls busied themselves by transferring their dresses to the wardrobes like the Queen suggested. Neither one spoke. The tension was so thick, you could cut it with a knife.
Elsa finished before Anna, and decided to help her sister. She walked over to where she was working.
"Hi." Elsa said quietly.
Anna looked up in surprise. "Oh! Um, hi."
"Do you need any help?"
After a pause, Anna nodded. "Yeah, that would be great!"
The girls worked in silence until they were finished, Anna stealing glances every now and then, a million questions running through her mind. She decided to voice one.
"Why?"
Elsa looked up. "Excuse me?"
"Why now? Why did you choose now to stop ignoring me?" Anna asked.
"I wasn't ignoring you-" Elsa started.
"Then what were you doing all those years?!" Anna demanded. "You are my sister, you were supposed to be there when I needed you and you NEVER were!"
Elsa looked like she was about to cry. "I know, but I couldn't."
"Why?" Anna asked softly. "Did I do something?"
Elsa's eyes widened. "No! No, it was never about you! It was me. Things are complicated and I couldn't be around you."
Anna's expression turned to one of confusion. "What happened? You should have come to me, I could have helped!"
Elsa smiled sadly. "No, trust me, you couldn't. This is something I have to deal with on my own."
"Can you tell me?"
Elsa looked scandalized. "No. Maybe someday, but not now. Look, I want to fix things between us. I want to be there for you."
Anna perked up. "That's all I've ever wanted! I have so many ideas! We could-"
Elsa put up a hand. "Whoa. Slow down. If we are going to do this, we are going to do it slowly. On my terms, okay?"
"Fine, what ever you want! Please, just don't shut me out again." Anna pleaded.
"I'll do my best." Elsa promised.
Anna grinned. "Thank you so much, Elsa. Can I hug you?"
"Uh, not yet."
Anna blushed and stepped back. The she remembered. She shouldn't be happy right now. The guilt struck her like a freight train and her smile faded.
Elsa noticed. "What's wrong?"
Anna felt tears in her eyes. "We are horrible daughters. Here we are, laughing and smiling, when we should be mourning our parents!"
Elsa looked down. Her sister had a point, but she had to cheer her up somehow. "Anna... It's alright to do things that make you happy. Mom and Dad would want that. Don't feel guilty, okay?"
Anna sniffled. "Okay."
Elsa wanted so badly to hug her sister right now, but she still didn't trust her powers. Speaking of powers, there was a knock on the door. Dylan poked his head in. "Dinner is ready if you girls want to come."
Elsa nodded. Dylan gave her an encouraging smile and left.
Anna wiped the tears from her eyes and sighed. "Let's go."
