CHAPTER FOURTEEN: Another Victim

Lily and Hugo were rushing through the corridors towards their Charms class. "We're going to be late," Hugo noted worriedly.

"We will if you don't get a move on,"Lily agreed.

"We shouldn't have had that last round of cards."

"You realise that now?" Lily stopped suddenly. "Do you hear something?"

Hugo looked confused. "Like what?"

"Listen."

Hugo indulged his stepsister and this time he heard it. The faint sound of crying. "It's coming from over here."

They followed the sound to one of the classrooms that wasn't in use. There was one person in it: One of the Gryffindor girls from their year. "Imelda?"

The girl raised her head and looked at them uncertainly. "Where am I?"

"We're on the second floor,"Hugo told her. "In the east wing."

Imelda didn't seem entirely enlightened by the news. "Is this a school?"

Lily looked at her with concern. "We're at Hogwarts, Imelda."

"Is that my name?"

Lily looked as serious as she'd ever been, recognising the same blank expression she'd seen on Hermione in Imelda's eyes. "You don't remember anything, do you?"she asked quietly. Imelda shook her head. Lily turned to Hugo. "We'd better get Professor Longbottom."

Hermione had wanted to go with Harry when they got the call from Hogwarts but he'd convinced her to wait behind. When he got to Slughorn's office, he found Ron there already. He had a feeling Neville had called him. It wasn't that he objected, Hugo was involved in the incident after all, but he'd have preferred to have been involved in the conversation.

"The girl's one of the third years?"he asked.

Neville nodded. "Imelda Creevey."

Harry noted the familiar surname. "Dennis' daughter?"

"Yeah, he married Demelza Robins. You know, she was on the Quidditch team the year you were captain."

"I remember her,"Harry confirmed.

"Can we speak to her?"Ron asked. "Imelda, I mean?"

"She's with her parents in one of the classrooms,"Slughorn confirmed. "You can have a quick word but I'm not sure how much she can tell you."

Slughorn and Neville led Harry and Ron to the classroom in question. Harry nodded a brief greeting to Dennis and Demelza, neither of whom he had seen since visiting Hogwarts during Ginny's last year. Then he turned his attention to their daughter. "Imelda, can you tell me what you remember?"

The girl shrugged, looking as though she'd been crying a lot and it wouldn't take much to make her start again. "I don't remember anything. They tell me my name's Imelda, they tell me these are my parents, they tell me magic's real but I don't remember any of it."

"You don't remember magic?"Ron asked.

"We're both muggleborn,"Dennis explained. "Maybe that's got something to do with it."

"Probably,"Harry agreed. "You'd better get her home." He looked at Imelda. "You're not alone, okay? This has happened to other people and we're going to try and make you all better." She nodded, clinging onto the parents she couldn't remember as if desperate for something tangible as they led her away.

Neville was watching Harry. "You've thought of something, haven't you?"

Harry nodded. "I think the person doing this is here. In Hogwarts. Imelda must have seen something she shouldn't."

"Someone at Hogwarts?"Ron asked. "Again?"

Harry turned on Slughorn. "James told me there were two new teachers this year. Did you run checks on them?"

"We ran all the checks you insisted on introducing after Miss Parkinson infiltrated us,"Slughorn insisted. "Everything checked out. I am certain that neither of them would side with Death Eaters. You can talk to them if you like."

"I will,"Harry retorted. "Because something here doesn't add up and I want to know what."
