Chapter Fourteen
Mira woke with a bad back after sleeping in her old home. She forced back a groan of pain as she straightened herself from an unpleasant sleep.
Once again she was back in the Outlands, the place she had once called home before meeting Tron. In a way it felt good to be back, but it also brought back bitter memories. She pictured the large ship and finding Cutler's disk in the rubble. By now the ship's remains had been cleared. All that was left of it were a few scorch marks the crash had made.
She let out a sigh after standing up. This wasn't going to be easy. But wearing a disguise would make things a little easier. None of the programs in the garage knew who Shadow really was. Thanks to the little device she had created, Tron wasn't able to track her down.
He'd never let me live it down if he caught me, she thought with a roll of her eyes. She'd managed to slip by him all these cycles, even before they had met.
Her mask hid her face as she turned her baton into a light cycle. She wasted no time in reaching the garage after the curfew was over. Not that she didn't care about facing any of Tesler's guards, but she needed to get to the garage in a hurry.
When she reached the garage she wasn't surprised to see Mara and Zed working inside. She recognized a few familiar faces, but she didn't bother wasting time with them. If anyone knew where Beck was it was his friends. Able was watching them closely while Zed fumbled around with the codes on a tank. Mira held her breath when Able looked at her curiously.
"Do you know where Beck might be?" she asked when he approached her.
"He's been gone since last cycle," Able replied. His voice was wary as he looked back at Mara and Zed. They were oblivious to Mira's arrival, but maybe that was a good thing. She didn't want to attract too much attention while she was out in the open. "You wouldn't happen to know where he is?" Able's question caught her off guard, and Mira looked everywhere but at him directly.
"Unfortunately no," she admitted.
Able raised an eyebrow before sighing in frustration, muttering something about young programs and all their problems. Amusement coursed through Mira as she watched him leave. Able was a good program, one that she could trust if she ever needed to.
If Beck isn't in the garage than he must be with Tron, she thought with a sigh of frustration. Maybe she could hide out until he returned, just to make sure that she was wrong. Beck needed to know that Cyrus was back. His safety and Tron's were at risk while that sociopath was still alive.
She stiffened when she heard someone cry out in pain. Wariness crept over Mira as she looked over her shoulder. Everyone in the garage seemed fine as far as she could tell. The noise had come from outside. She bit the bottom of her lip before following the sound. It could be a trap, or someone really was hurt. Either way instinct kicked in. She was about to reach for her disk when her hand grabbed her light staff instead.
Don't look threatening, she reminded herself. If the program is hurt they'll be afraid. Fear makes them do stupid things.
Mira nearly recoiled in shock when she realized who the program was as she got closer. Pixels were beginning to form along the street when she approached the program. This was the last thing she had expected to see when she leaned down to help the program.
"Don't," he hissed after swatting away her hand. That only caused more pixels to fall out. It was than Mira noticed the scars on his wrists. The wounds Cyrus had given him were worse than she imagined. It looked like some kind of virus had infected his healing abilities, similar to what had happened to Tron.
"It's okay, I'm here to help, but I'll need your disk," she replied in a soft voice.
Beck looked at her in surprise. Mira held back another sigh as he hesitantly gave her his disk. She wasted no time in pulling out the codes that would normally heal any program. But the codes were gone after she sifted through the files.
That's no surprise. Anger churned within her as she tapped in a few codes. Being a User did have it's benefits. She was able to access codes that programs normally couldn't. That was how she could heal Able's wounds, even when he was on the brink of derezzing. Within a few nanos she managed to restore the code to it's original state. She handed the disk back to Beck as the wounds began to patch.
"The virus you had crippled your healing ability," she explained when he put his disk back in place. "Whoever gave it to you wanted you out of the picture."
"Thanks... how do you know all of this?" Beck watched her carefully as she took a few steps back.
"I've been studying as a medic for the last hundred cycles," she replied. "I help programs that were hurt by the Occupation."
"I thought I heard someone out here!" Mira stiffened once more when she recognized Zed's voice. His eyes widened in shock when he spotted Beck leaning against the side of the garage. "Beck, what happened to you?" he demanded after noticing the patchwork on his old wounds.
"It's okay, I was... in an accident on my way to work," Beck told his friend.
Mira stepped into the shadows just as Mara reached them. She had enough trouble talking to Beck again let alone his friends. The last time they had seen each other was when Clue tried to kill them all. Fortunately at that time the Revolutionists had stopped him just in time. Now she was alone, unless Tron managed to foresee any threats that might be upon them.
A few millicycles seemed to pass before anything else happened. Mira paced around in the alley until she heard footsteps approaching from behind. She whirled around with her disk in hand until she recognized Beck.
"You wanted to see me," he said in an accusing tone. Mira eyed him warily. Though his wounds had healed he would still be in pain if she attacked. But at this point she wanted to know the truth. Renegade or not he needed to know that Cyrus was alive.
"The renegade's been causing trouble in Tron City," she muttered crossly. "As in killing innocent programs and stealing weapons made by Clu."
Beck's eyes widened when he seemed to recognize where this was getting at. He took a step back before trying to figure out what it all meant.
"But that means..." He cut himself off before shaking his head in frustration. "The Rogue isn't behind this." Mira folded her arms as she waited for the news to sink in. Obviously the Rogue wouldn't be behind such heinous crimes. "But he said that Cyrus was killed!"
"Cyrus is alive." Mira tried to keep her voice steady as her hands clenched into fists.
And because of Tron he's going to make things worse in my sector, Mira thought angrily. What bothered her more than anything was that Tron had lied. He had told them that Cyrus was dead, that the problem had been taken care of.
"I'm going after him," she suddenly announced. Beck looked at her as if she had grown wings. "If he isn't taken care of his chaos will spread."
"You're not going after him alone," Beck retorted. "I have experience fighting him, you don't."
Mira was about to snap that she could fight Cyrus just as easily. But she had to admit that having backup was a good idea. None of the Revolutionists knew how capable Cyrus was. But working alongside Beck again wasn't going to be easy, as much as Mira hated to admit it.
"If it's a fight he wants, it's a fight he's going to get," she said under her breath. And this time she was going to make sure that Cyrus was killed.
End of Line
